MARKET TALK: EUR/USD Heavy On Italy Outlook Downgrade
EUR/USD likely to trade with slightly heavy tone after S&P's downgrade of Italy's outlook overnight, but though S&P's action puts spotlight on fiscal position of Italy and other euro-zone economies, Tokyo dealers expect pair to be underpinned around 1.0530 by lingering geopolitical concerns; range-top for session likely 1.0580

My short at 1.0577 on Tuesday was stopped out at 1.0559 after the strong rebounce from 1.0500. Is this a top building or just a consolidation of further uptrend?
The best bet is to sell the break of 1.0500. If EURUSD is unable to substain the break of 1.0600. Sell on the break back of 1.0600. Stay aside for now.
USDJPY is looking very likely to fall through 117.50 to 115.50 soon. It's a question of when rather than if.

BT - My take on Eur/Usd and Usd/Yen:
Eur/Usd - 1.0600 looks like will not be broken any time soon. This has been tested 4 times this week without success. I do not see a reason why it will break today. We shall see range trading from 1.0500 - 1.0590.
Usd/Yen - Same story. Range trade 117.50 - 118.70. Until either side breaks, keep trading the extreames and make some money. This has been my strategy for past couple days.
Nothing out of Japan in the form of econ. data and nothing out of EZ except y/y German GDP.
Unless N. Korea starts mouthing off or US/and Allies attack Iraq, should be a relatively quiet day in Asia. The only noise will come from MoF.

Although it is an engulfing candle - I will use the Upper bollinger band as a RESISTANCE. Also the "fast" MACD line has crossed below the "slow" MACD line, but and is still UNDER the slow line. Again, I am treating the SLOW line as Resistance. Of course, we will see.

There is decent r/r in buying EUR/USD here with s/l below 1,0500 if

Usd/Yen: A crazy beast indeed. I too believe we may need to test 117 before heading back up (125), but I don't thin we will see anything below 117.50 today (by NY close). Several reasons for this. Technically, 117.55 is a daily support. There is an Options Barrier @ 50 and finally, this is a rumour, the MoF/BOJ has orders to protect 50.
It would be ok to see a test of 50 then a rebound, but only to eliminate short speculators.
If NY Close is below 118.00 then expect a lot of verbal intervention from MOF. A close above 118.70 would change short term bearishness, but odds of that are not good at the moment.
Cheers.

BA - the spike up in eur/usd was not really enthusiasm to buy Euro, but rather a knee jerk reaction to the N. Korea news. The market was short via speculators thus they had to do a quick cover. I think very soon the market will stabilize back to pre N. Korea news levels once traders realize that the N. Koreans will and have been making negative comments until they are "paid" their extortion/blackmail monies.

If the 1.0635/50, the 38.2% retracement of the 1995-2000 bear trend holds there could even be a sizeable correction of recent gains back towards 1.02-1.03 area given that the latest speculative positioning data suggest the dollar remains very oversold and may be due for a correction soon.

FWIW/ Charts suggests larger move lower in store for EUR/USD, supports
at 1,0460 and 1,0440. My system giving a sell signal, but not sure
whether to take it or not. Get the feeling we are not yet through
testing the topside, so would like to see one more go at 1,0600.
There is decent r/r in buying EUR/USD here with s/l below 1,0500 if
one favours upside still. Personally was uncomfortable beeing short
and cut it, experience is if you`re not happy with your position, cut
it and look again.

Another small help. (USD-JPY)
With the balance of speculative accounts still long in USD-JPY (as for flows of funds data of three principal market dealers)and interest to the other players to buy downside (namely through JPY call spreads 114/116) spot may fall further. Historical BOJ interventions happened at and below 115. Amid uncertainty of interv. one way to trade the JPY is take a longer dated USDCALL/PUTJPY strike say 125, with KO 112 valid the first 3months.

JHB CA - Some information- take it as you see it..Dealers believe
that the MoF are unlikely to allow the dollar to fall below 117.50 where some
option barriers are reported. The rumour has it that the MoF were very unhappy
with the dollar falling below 118.00 yesterday and for the whole Asian session
dealers were nervous of forex intervention due to some the strong rhetoric
coming from Japanese officials.
MoF official, Mizoguchi, warned that the ministry would take appropriate action
on excess forex movements. He added that excessive yen strength is not good for
the Japanese economy that he does not expect the currency"s strength to last for
long.
The dollar spiked to a high of 118.80 during the Tokyo lunch time on the back of
an intervention rumour which turned out to be untrue as a interbank player
bought a good amount of dollars for customer. However, dealers remain wary of
possible forex intervention and for this reason the dollar seems to be finding a
base at 118.00 where some Japanese bids are rumoured.

13 jan I recommended this trade: (spot 1.0540) buy EUR-PUT /USD CALL
X=1.05 K.I=1.07 for 50/60 pips 2months tenor and buy spot EUR-USD profit around 1.0580/90, stop-loss around 1.0490.
Now, with some bearish techs in sight, complete this trade buying EURCALL X=1.0550 K.I.= 1.0360 2months tenor for 50pips. Sell 1.0515/20 spot take profit 1.0460/70 stop-loss 1.0550/60.
If correct you will be sitting on two options with KI in two turning points of market and you are bidirectional in a period of high vol, possible war, possible peace during 2 months.
You will not see many other messages from me. I am not interested in forum. Since I am out of desk for holidays and I saw this forum I would do a little favor. Good luck.

EUR/USD
1.0554. EUR tested close to 1.0600 as expected. Supports are at 1.0520 & 1.0500. While above these supports one more upside attempt to 1.0625/30 cannot be ruled out, but momentum is weakening. Generally expect a correction down to 1.0500/1.0490 initially.
USD/CHF
1.3861. Dollar tested close to 1.3785, slightly above 1.3775 suggested. Down momentum is slackening which hints at the possibility of a move higher to 1.3925/45 in short term on break of resistance near 1.3885/90.
USD/JPY
118.20. Break of support at 118.70 took Dollar close to 117.50 yesterday. Now resistance at 118.75/85 area should contain the corrective advances for a fall to 117.35/30.
GBP/USD
1.6051. No change in view. Cable may be trading in a triangle with downside support near 1.5965/55. While it holds, Cable will retain its chances for a probe higher near 1.6185/1.6215
Other Comments
EUR/CHF: 1.4630..Divergence in MACD is noticed in hourly charts. EUR may fall to 1.4590/75 from 1.4650/55.
EUR/JPY: 124.69. EURÕs short term upside attempts are likely to fail near 125.15/20 for a fall to 124.25/20.
EUR/GBP: 0.6569. EUR tested the set target. Now some correction/consolidation is likely between 0.6550 & 0.6600.
AUD/USD: 0.5866. One more upside thrust to 0.5900/05 cannot be ruled out while above 0.5850.
USD/CAD: 1.5411. No change in view. It can rise to 1.5445/55 initially & ideally to 1.5505/15 later.

AUD/JPY; I am about to enter a short on this pair. 69.37, limit 67.05, stop 71.11. My reasoning is a follows:
1) A general USD/JPY bearishness has been in place for some time now, with the break of 118 this week, a downside target of 116/115 is probable.
2) On the daily AUD/JPY the 70 region has been tried twice with a failure. This is third try and I expect it to fail.
3) On the 15m/60m chart, AUD/JPY appears to have failed 70 region and is starting to head lower.
4) AUD/USD needs some consolidation after recent gains to almost 59 cents.
Anyone have a comment on this trade?

USD/JPY Said To Have Been Paid As High as 118.82 on BoJ Rumor
A rumor that the BoJ was intervening spread like wildfire in relatively thin Tokyo-lunchtime trading, sending USD/JPY up to as high as 118.82 by some accounts. More likely, the high was probably 118.50 bid or 118.60 paid but there are scattered reports of trades higher. The rumor is tipped to have started on buying by one large player. Stops were tripped above the session high of 118.25 and 118.50 as well. The market has since come off hard on the realization that the BoJ had not in fact intervened. USD/JPY trades 118.20/25 at writing, about
where it was just ahead of the rumor.

JP Morgan technical analysts say gold could reach $430/oz "in coming years"; absence of any dramatic falls on recent way up to near 6-year highs (bullion plunged $25 on day it reached $341 in 1999) and ability to hold $348 support give increased credence to view market has double-bottomed at $252-$254, with gold now on track for rally toward $430. Recommend going long at $352.25.

One thing I would like to point out to New traders, be careful of traders, even those in high positions at some Banks trying their best to put doubt in about a currency when it its doing well. Such as you get with certain ones in Australia very carefully placing reports on Newswires . I have closed positions out only to regret later especially on the Aud.. The best person to listen to on here is someone similar to Shanghai BC he changes his location now and again but BC initials. I say this because still seeing it on newswires from Banks who have been Bearish and missed out on the Aussie and Euro Rallies due to their Earlier views , now still trying to catch up by hopefully spreading a few nasty comments. This is a typical type to avoid reading economist Stephen Koukoulas

LA3 21:59.. sorry for the late reply.. Usd/Jpy m/t side to up bias.. s/t down from 125 conforming to the recent dollar softness.. mini term, extremely bearish tones after being 'double crossed' by the 3 day slide in it's crosses & the spill over dollar negative effects from the raging Euro ..
from here, the market could consolidate with a risk of further slides to the 'all bear 115' target on a decisive break of Euro 1.065..
however, with the BOJ/MOF Sans singing the intervention blues & the dollar reaching a critical 'bear/lagtime' turning point along with the seasonal Jan/1Qtr bullish bias, the slide could be limited & one can't rule out a near term return to the 7 month range top up at the 125's..

Hi TF bids are noted from 1.0525 at least our end

If u r not comfy about it all

Deano// This is a nuisance. I wanted to take aud profit in us session tonight and load up some more around 5820 before then. If I dont take profit then I'll regret it. Any thoughts?

How do you think I or anybody else can help you, Dear? It is your money that you trade, and it must be your decision how to trade it. I suggest that you wait a bit, listen and learn here at this forum. Wait until you can get a more clear picture. I would say that EUR is in a no trade zone now for a newbie. Wait until it breaks out either north through 1.0600 or south through 1.0525. You may also want to trade this range, but use a tight stop if you decide to do so. Same for CFH now but just the reversed direction. I would not touch pund or yen now if I were you.
Does it help? I wonder....
Good luck.
