AUD Improves After Strong Rally In Base Metals

Sydney ACC 22:26 GMT August 22, 2005 Reply
The Sydney property market hit a two-year low during the June quarter when the median house price dropped below $500,000 for the first time since the 2003 September quarter.

In the three months to June, the median house price in Sydney fell by 3.13 per cent to $495,000 and the median unit price dropped 2.63 per cent to $370,000, figures from the Real Estate Institute of NSW show.

Prices fell in all parts of the city, but the middle ring, which includes council areas such as Concord and Hurstville, recorded the biggest drop, 8.95 per cent.

The smallest fall was recorded in inner Sydney council areas, where the median house price dropped 1.6 per cent to $754,000.

AUD higher overnight against softer USD in New York. Suncorp strategist Peter Pontikis says upside potential in play, with pair somewhat oversold in recent sessions and commodity prices still strengthening. Sees potential for rise toward 0.7625 this week. No major domestic data so pair to be driven by offshore forces. AUD/USD now 0.7552.

Today was another classical pivot point trading day. Both EUR and Cable rebounded from the daily pivot I posted after Sunday open, and both went to Res 2.
Just realized that my charting software introduced pivot points in the indicator list, so I do not need to calculate them anymore myself.

The ZEW economic sentiment index will be released Tuesday, and is seen rising for the 3rd straight month to 37.5 in Aug from 37.0 in July on improving global manufacturing outlook, rise in German manufacturing orders. But surging oil prices should cap gains, say economists.
The dollar lower Monday, particularly versus the yen, which was helped by a rally in Japan stocks and polls showing growing favor for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi ahead of elections on Sept. 11., dollar selling represented a reversal from its rally last week, when it gained more than 2% on the euro, showed resilience versus the yen, and gained broadly versus other currencies.
The Brazilian real and currencies of other emerging markets also posted strong gains, bouncing back from a sharp selloff on Friday, as investors grew calmer about the political funding scandal in Brazil after comments over the weekend from Brazilian Finance Minister Antonio Palocci. In addition to the real, the Chilean peso, the Turkish lira, Mexican peso and the South African rand, among others, gained ground versus the dollar.

BNZ strategist Sue Trinh says Kiwi gained as USD weaker across the board; USD moves mainly technical as there wasn't any data to influence. Notes some speculators, analysts also suggesting Eurozone data this evening might be stronger-than-expected, which would support EUR, make USD weaker. Says today's local 2Q Producer Price Index should underscore generalized inflationary pressures; Kiwi likely to trade in range of 0.6940-0.6980

No inside scoop unfortunately. I simply travel between Brazil and the US frequently and follow the value of the Real closely. I've noticed that the USD/BRL has been trending downward over the last year. I thought I could capitalize on that somehow. I realize this is pure speculation on my part but nonetheless I'm curious about it.

LONDON (AFX) - Oil prices rose on Monday amid ongoing unrest in Ecuador, southern Iraq and Nigeria, while hurricanes remained a threat to installations in the Gulf of Mexico, dealers said.

"The market is still very, very nervous," Investec analyst Bruce Evers said. "I'm absolutely convinced we'll see 70 dollars before the end of the year. Prices can go higher."

10 pips. fwiw, i expect any downside eur play to come before a rally towards 1.27++. I'm unsure of how low we will go (likely sub 1.200, but potentially a new low below 1.1850), but am fairly confident that the downside is relatively limited from here and that the next big play in the weeks/months ahead will be eur higher and above 1.3000 - timeframe is all dependant on how low we go, but i expect we'll be trading quite a bit higher come the end of the year.

p.s. 1.15 and below should be seen in time, but if not on an immediate drop i reckon we'll be waiting a very minimum of 6 months, but probably much, much longer (incidentally, i feel we may still have another high above 1.3650 to come before a move to 1.15!!!).

Russia completes early payoff of third of Paris Club debt Mon Aug 22, 4:05 AM ET

A 2.3-billion-dollar (1.9-billion-euro) payment was made Friday and Monday -- the final part of a 15-billion-dollar early repayment that began last month to 16 of the Paris Club's 19 member countries, the official said."

Reuters-Yen hits 6-wk high vs euro on rallying Japan stocks
Mon Aug 22, 2005 1:06 PM BST

Foreign investors have snapped up around 6 trillion yen ($54.31 billion) of Japanese stocks this year. Their buying has picked up in recent weeks, helping push the Nikkei stock average to fresh 4-year highs on Monday.

"We basically expect more of the same. It doesn't appear to be the case that international equity fund managers have yet built up significant overweight Japan positions, although I do agree that there has been strong net buying over the past couple of weeks," Adam Cole, senior currency strategist at RBC Capital Markets, said.

Receding political concerns are also lending a hand. A weekend poll in the Yomiuri newspaper showed the popularity of the Koizumi cabinet had risen 5.5 percentage points to 53.2 percent since early August.

Some investors say the dollar could struggle to extend its rally this year since the market has already factored in a scenario where the Fed raises rates well into 2006.

Based on theory what we are looking at is a cup and handle formation, which will consolidate for a short while and may then move upwards. If it fails the handle, then we have a retracement, otherwise it'll breakout (explode!) further upwards. Theory mind you...

UK economic indicators
UK data are few this week. Most attention will be on the revised second quarter gdp figures, due on Friday. The estimate is expected to be raised from 0.4% growth to 0.5% growth, on revisions to trade data and after a strong rise of 1.2% in June retail sales. Such an outcome may make it even less likely that the MPC will cut interest rates later in the year.

Australia's largest gold miner Newcrest Mining Ltd has posted a strong net profit for 2004/05 on the back of higher production from the new Telfer mine.

Net profit for the year was up 11 per cent to $136.1 million.

The profit before tax was up 21 per cent to $148.2 million in 2004/05 with significant item losses totalling $17.3 million related to provisions for previous hedge restructures.

Newcrest said the increased profit was a good indicator of the underlying business.

Sales revenue for 2004/05 increased 39 per cent to $985.5 million, with the miner achieving an average spot gold price of $576 per ounce and an average copper price of $1.85 per pound.

However a build up in inventory negatively impacted the revenue with Newcrest holding 77,519 ounces of gold at the end of June, compared to 12,101 at the end of the 2003/04 year.

An increase in debtors, combined with the build up in inventories, led to a reduced cash flow, down to $259 million from $266.8 million in 2003/04.

Miners are increasingly incurring higher inventory stocks. Could this be the first signals of over production?

Citigroup says GBP/CAD's failure ahead of key technical resistance (2.1937) has now improved the risk/reward balance and justifies a spot position as well as the short-GBP/CAD-via-options position which the bank recommended last week. Bank recommends shorting GBP/CAD around 2.18 with an initial downside target of 2.10. Suggests leaving stops above upward sloping trendline from 2001 lows, which today come in at 2.2193.

EURO/USD - Reversal Imminent
by Max McKegg
chart

August 19th - Although the Euro's sharp sell-off this week has unnerved Bulls, this sell-off is probably merely a "shaking of the tree", serving to scare off some Bulls and set the platform for the next leg of Euro's corrective recovery.

Therefore, with support around the 1.2050 level, expecting imminent exhaustion of Euro weakness and start of the Euro's next broad recovery toward the 1.2700 level (refer Chart below). My Daily Trading Recommendations will again seek to finesse this move.

Began the Collapse in Euro to 1.18 or more downnnnn???

A very strong decline in the euro had place the past week. More than 300 pips low, bouncing in the 20 days moving averages of weekly chart and in the 0.5 fib retracement of wave 3, with a break and close below the 20 days MA of the daily chart. This engulfing bearish candle can be a signal that the down trend is back. The wave counting constitute another clue to determinate possible turns in trends, as the charts show.
The Blue conting shows a double zig zag wave 4 finished, with a top in 1.2485. Since here start the decline and the first five waves down labeled as wave (i), followed by a recovery wave (ii) and another down as wave (iii), still in progress, with a target between the 1.382 and 1.5 wave (i) projection. The fifth wave confirm definitively that wave 5 is in progress, with a first target in 1=5.
The Red counting shows a wave (X) in progress, where the first zig zag W made top in 1.2485, being retraced by X, that is still in progress. The first wave down labeled as ((a))made a bottom in 1.2294, followed by the wave ((b)) recovery and wave ((c)) in progress with a target in the 1.382 to 1.618 wave ((a)) projection.

Syd 02:03 GMT August 22, 2005 Reply
GBP/USD has slight downward bias after last week's break below uptrend line from late July, but pressure isn't strong; pull-back hasn't even broken 38.2% retracement of rise from July at 1.7832 (immediate, minor underlying support at 1.7900). So consolidation is likely this week, perhaps between 1.7832 support and August peak of 1.8178 (immediate, minor underlying resistances at 1.8000 and 1.8100). GBP/USD's longer-term outlook will remain modestly negative unless it breaks above shallow downtrend line from last December, now at 1.8890

martin// if around i am having some doubts about euro, my system tells me there is some type of upside bias but on the weekly charts we had 6 upside weeks and 1 downside week, so far a large move of about 400 pips almost, so am doubtful if there would be an upside bias this week or we see a continuation of last week's downside bias..

would appreciate your view.

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. In addition, there is a forex brokers directory where you can compare forex brokers. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs.

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Forex Brokers

The forex database can be used to access high, low, close daily forex ranges for key currency pairs, such as the EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, GBPUSD, USDCAD, AUD, NZD and major crosses, including EURJPY, EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPJPY, GBPCHF and CHFJPY. Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs. You can look on the forex forum for updates when one of the fx trading tools is updated.

FX Trading

Global-View also offers a full fx trading chart gallery that includes fx pairs, such as the EURUSD, commodities, stocks and bonds. In a fx trading world where markets are integrated, the chart gallery is a valuable trading tool. Look for updates on the Forex Forum when the chart gallery is updated.
