Jobless claims fell 20,000 to a seasonally adjusted 304,000 in the week ended Dec. 9 from an unrevised 324,000. The level was the lowest since new claims dropped to 300,000 the week ending Oct. 14. Economists surveyed by DJ expected a fall of 4,000 to 320,000. The four-week moving average for jobless claims fell by 1,500 to 327,250. Treasurys slump on the news, with prices along the curve moving evenly lower. 2-yr yields 4.72%, 10-yr 4.59%.

usa g-8 16:50 GMT December 14, and the ETF
one item caught my eye
In earlier interviews with Rydex, the company said that the Japanese Yen product was delayed because of low interest rates in Japan. All of the CurrencyShares charge 40 basis points in expenses, and the seven existing funds pay that out of interest earned on deposits. But Japanese interest rates are so low – they have crept up from zero to 24.6 basis points – that they will not generate enough income to cover the 40 basis point expense ratio. As a result, the fund will be forced to sell assets to cover costs, in much the same way that the gold bullion ETFs sells gold to cover its cost. One quirk of this unfortunate situation is that the fund will convert Yen to U.S. dollars in order to pay these expenses; when it does, any gain or loss on that conversion will be a taxable event for shareholders.
my emphasis

Australian PM Says Govt Will Watch Qantas Bid Proposal
Australian Prime Minister John Howard Thursday said the government will watch the takeover bid for Qantas Airlines Ltd. (QAN.AU) but the transaction was ultimately a matter for the market.
"The takeover will have to comply with the Qantas Sale Act and will have to comply with our foreign investment laws and we won't be changing the laws," Howard told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio.

Spot gold last at $628.55/oz, little changed from NY close after slipping below $630 on USD strength, with extra pressure from base metal weakness; copper hit 4-week low. Bounce from sub-$624 session low, back into $625-630 range, despite USD headwind, is viewed as anomaly; "we still think gold is a greenback game and these support levels will not matter so much if the U.S. dollar continues to rally," says Australia's CBA.

OPEC oil ministers starting to line up behind what would be 2nd output cut in 3 months, say cartel officials familiar with proceedings; cuts wouldn't take place immediately, these officials say, and uncertainty created by that delay may confound oil markets. OPEC ministers, set to meet later in day, may still choose to keep output at current levels; also still must discuss and approve any changes and by late last night many details still had to be worked out. Under proposals being discussed, cartel would slice 500,000 b/d off production and target output of 25.8 million b/d, officials say; cuts would be deferred, probably to Feb. 1. A deferred cut would be unusual but not unprecedented move; cuts may never be carried out as oil market may change during period.
