US futures headed lower this morning as oil made a beachhead below $60 and pushed the energy complex broadly lower. Shale drillers and independent oil names are leading the declines on the S&P500. European stocks are looking to close at their lows after French core inflation dropped into contraction territory, raising the specter of deflation. As of writing, the DJIA is down 0.60%, the S&P500 is down 0.62% and the Nasdaq is down 0.15%.

The preliminary reading on December consumer confidence index from the University of Michigan came in at its highest level since January 2007. This solid confidence data plus yesterday's very good November retail sales data suggests that retailers are on track for a strong holiday shopping season. Note that the U of Michigan survey's inflation expectations also ticked higher, with the 1-year inflation expectation rising to 2.9% from 2.8%

Crude is firmly below $60 this morning, with the front-month WTI contract trading around $58.90 as of writing. Earlier today the IEA cut its 2015 demand growth forecasts below 1.0M bpd, the latest piece of bad news for the energy complex. The IEA said that non-OPEC production rose by a record 1.9M bpd in 2014 and was expected to increase by another 1.3M bpd in 2015.

There is an emerging thesis that the sustained drop in oil prices could cause big problems for the high yield debt market and possible broader equity markets. Data from Lipper suggests there are rumblings in the space: investors pulled nearly $1.9 billion from funds holding low-rated bonds in the past week, the largest weekly decline since the $2.3 billion withdrawal registered in the week ended Oct. 1.

Among the biggest gainers this morning is Adobe, which is up 7.5% on a strong fourth quarter earnings report. Canadian energy name Talisman is up more than 20% on press reports that Repsol is finalizing a 4B bid for company. The entire North American onshore driller complex and names like RIG and SLB are tumbling again on oil prices.
