EUR seems to be accumulating some more strength to fight higher and higher, and so far it has been successful. Only a significant drop below 0450 would negate the EUR bulls. ANd as long as EUR is up, Her Royal Higness, perhaps lagging behind, will happily follow.

Hi Andras - first of all, not ALWAYS gloomy here in England - sometimes the sun actually does shine in the blue sky - not too often though - but it is a very nice place to live.

You are very right about Her Majesty - a tough beast to master - I probably have lost more on this pair than any other ccy pair - but have also made some big big gains - I suppose HIGHER risk, HIGHER reward too.

Mixed signals for me on this ome at the moment - 6 times now (daily) price over 1.61 and now below - normally I would take that as a HUGE resistance in this area and would prepare to short. But at the moment, standing aside

Now we are below 118 and repatriation has not even started. I wonder how Japanese funds can repatriate in this sitation. Are we going to see 105 by the end of the fiscal year? I do not think so. BOJ, with some help from ECB and FEd will have to do something very soon before it is too late. But on the other hand intervention is of no use when USD/YEN is sliding. It can only have the desired effect when it is already goingn north. A tough battle to come, I will stay away from yen for a while.

Right, once it was clearly above 45 it was a good buy, I was referring to price action before. The dailies and hourlies were pointing towards south, MACD, slow Stocks. Real action north started when EUR/GBP run into selling pressure at 6615. That was the only reason for the rally to 6115, and see where it is now again. Anyway, you are right that you can learn a lot from bad trades. I was long from 6023 but got stopped out by that spike low at 5983.
BTW - Pecs is in Southern Hungary. Great place, like your gloomy Manchester, as I recall:-)
cheers

Manchester Daniel 19:59 GMT January 14, 2003 Reply
DB - perhaps I am in the minority, but I do not believe we will have any intervention by BoJ - we are not really seeing YEN strength - what we are seeing is overall dollar weakness - I do not believe the BoJ will try to fight this.

They will keep talking to try and make the fall "more gradual" and not too sharp - but until 115.50 I personally cant see intervention.
BTW - thats why we use stops!!

The best time for BoJ to try and use intervention would be if there were an overall dollar rally - it is much easier to push the rock down the hill once the rock is already moving - thats probably some sort of Chinese proverb - perhaps one of our Asian friends could let us know.

Andras - hmmm - I wonder what indicators you are using when you say "all possible indicators were pointing south"

Cable was a clear BUY above 1.6046 - I myself was in a short EUR/GBP, but that essentially means I was counting on GBP/$ going up.

Perhaps it is worth sharing with the forum what indicators you are referring to. I find it very useful to discuss trades that went wrong, much more than trades that go right - you learn so much more.

By the way - where is PECS???? Take care

Fine, i see your point. But! When you get stopped out and the price goes back to your entry point there is no way to tell whether it was a clear and strong breach of the fibo level and the support, rather than a spike low. So you may be tempted to reenter the long trade and you may get stopped out again. You only know it with the benefit of hindsight that the breach was significant, when you get stopped out for the second timeand the market shoots south. Or the 3rd if the market is just zigzagging arounf the fibo and the support for some time before it really makes a move north or south. I am exaggerating the situation now, because I do not think it would be a good idea to enter for the 3rd time.
But thanks for your views.

To Manchester Daniel: Are you not considering a possible intervention from the BoJ ?

Manchester Daniel 19:30 GMT January 14, 2003 Reply
Andras - if you are "day trading" as opposed to position trading, then I find 20 pips more than enough to tell me if my reasons for entereing a trade are right or wrong.

As an example, lets say you were using an hourly chart and had identified an upleg that was now retracing. You identify where the 61.8% retrace point is and prepare to take a LONG position at this point. Let us also say that 10 pips under this point, there also happens to be a trend line support.

So, to make this example simple, I am entering the trade for 2 specific reasons:

1st: 61.8% fibo retrace
2nd: trend line support 10 pips under this point.

If the price continues going down and reaches 20 pips below my entry point, then BOTH my reasons for entering the trade have been violated.
Therefore, I can see no reason to stay in the trade and "hope" the position will reverse. I would rather take my loss and re-evaluate what had happened and look for other opportunities.

Any comments most welcomed

Pecs Andras 19:28 GMT January 14, 2003 Reply

Yes, I fully agree, successful trading is finding good entry and exit points and money management. But it is hard. Take cable as an example. Today it strengthened some 130 pips although all possible indicators were pointing towards south, and fundamental news reinforced that move. So the correct trade would have been short. You get stopped out with 20 pips, and then marekt comes back to your entry. Short again, and you get stopped out again. I know that you also need to know when to reverse, but there was no indication or reason to reverse, crosses and indicators were still pointing down. And eventually it rallied to 6115. A killing beast, her Highness is.:-)

Pecs - Andras: Hi there - what you say is 100% correct - the entry point is the key to my trading - and yes, I sometimes do get stopped out of good positions - I watch this very carefully - if the price returns to my original entry point, and as long as all the reasons I entered the trade the first time are still valid, I will re-enter the trade - with the same 20 pip stop loss

How can you survive 3 out of 5 trades with a 20 pip stop? That is very tight, and the market is usually more volatile than that, whipsaws can easily kill a good positon. You must have a way of finding good entry points. I very often get stopped out of otherwise promising positions.

Manchester Daniel 19:07 GMT January 14, 2003 Reply
I would be suprised to see this line break in New York - but I believe that a close UNDER 118 would be very very bearish for $/YEN.

My method of trading only allows for 20 pips stops, targetting 100 pips gains - so although I will post trades on the Forum, please note that I can easily be wrong 3 times and right only 2 times out of a total of 5 trades - but I will have 140 pips profit per contract traded on 5 trades.

Remember - this "game" is not about having more wins than loses (thats sports). Its about one thing and one thing only - PROFIT - ie, MONEY MANAGEMENT. GL GT

As USD-JPY gets new legs down, the pairing is approaching levels where it is increasingly vulnerable to a BoJ spoof. The speed and magnitude of the drop could force the MoF into action at any time now, if the ministry's verbal warnings are to retain any credence in the markets.

Los Angeles, I made a quick statement. If you'd like to see why I came to that conclusion to buy Usd/jpy just simply because of a change of direction in the MACD. The RSI (hourly) are calling for oversold levels, however the Stochastics are pointing to overbought levels, thus pointing to a conclusion of a change of direction in the trend. That and the small surge in the US market.

True, my call may be wrong. But I would never degrade someones intelligence on the basis of a statement. Especially in a trading forum. So please have some small amount of respect and keep negative comments to yourself. I, at least, respect everyone in this forum.

If you trade four pips round trip i.e.two pips-spread a trade (and I doubt you can), is not already a good bet. Take the pencil and verify. Don't look at all the pseudo-guru levels. I can give you tech-analysis of the most important banks, dealers and brokers every hour, but it's no use.
The only traders who survive are those who think not only direction-trade, but volatility trade and risk-reward counter-trade protections. The others speak, speak, speak but make money only their brokers.

CAIRO — Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has for the first time signaled openness to an Arab plan for his exile in an effort to prevent a U.S.-led war against Iraq.

Arab diplomatic sources said Saddam has agreed to send a senior aide to discuss "personal issues." The sources said the aide could arrive in Cairo over the weekend for talks on a plan to organize asylum in a Middle East country.

On Monday, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz said Saddam would never leave Iraq

Saddam's envoy was identified as Ali Hassan Al Majid, a senior member of the Iraqi Revolutionary Council. Majid, known as "Chemical Ali," has been accused of ordering Iraqi chemical weapons attacks on Kurds in northern Iraq in the 1980s, Middle East Newsline reported.

Since december medium term traders are sellers, probably the average selling around 1.02.
They have used the entire upswing to reduce their long holdings. This is a fine strategy if EUR declines and allows them to rebuy at more favourable rates.
If market go higher and higher may be they will be cornered with some of the lowest levels of eur-exposure since the trend got underway.
This may trigger a scramble to buy at much higher rates.

Prague mark.
Some reasons for strategy are:
Sentiment is very EUR bullish (Vane, LCVI, S&F INDEX)
Correlation 10/2TX and Eurodollar 3mnth correlation
Flows of funds
Medium term traders aren't in the market, and last week they were sellers, not buyers.
I think we have to see RR a bit higher, implied a bit higher, and some signal from IMM. 1,075 is probably a target, but if not the wall is around 1.09.
In the short term EUR is a buy, then I see a large pullback (remember buy Iraq news, sell the fact) then may resume uptrend. So with this trade you could be sitting on money at low cost. If you want a 0 cost you may sell a vanilla circa 1.09 or a low strike with lower than spot KO.

HK Newbie// No one seems to have mentioned one very serious problem with fx trading. It can be very addictive and you are likely to spend many hours at your desk every day 6 hours per week. Your body will need to adapt. You are likely to become fat and flabby unless you can force yourself to do serious exercise. If you look at people who have spent many years as a truck or taxi driver they usually fit the same mould. It is not so bad while you are young, but beware later on.

But it will also help if you start off with some correct assumptions or at least by discarding incorrect assumptions (if you have any). The latter include assumptions such as there are double-triple digit returns to be made in FX, or that it comes easily to anybody. Give yourself at least 2-5 years of making mistakes and picking up experience. Take care, and God Speed on your journey. Hasten slowly, they say.

on 5th waves a classic was in interest rates - in aust rates sold off from around 4 per cent to 11/12 per cent - the elliot wave theorists projected a 5th wave to 15-18 per cent and you now see where interest rates ended up --- shouldnt judge by one case but elliot wave is not an exact guide. sorry to be so negative lately but maybe thats to do with quiet markets and itchy fingers...

For day trading you will need a lot of time and you are a college
student... If your interesse in FX is very high maybe position trading will be more adequate for you.
To practice this, here is my tip for you:
Open a demo account now, if the margin leverage
is 50 take only a position where you use only 20 buy
this days GBP/CHF near 2.2180 . Because the rate difference the rollover will be positive for you. Put a T/P order
for 2.27 and a S/L order for 2.17, you have a good chance that in less than 3 month you will have more than 50% profit on your "money".

CFA makes more sense if you're planning to work in a Fund House. Look at the syllabus closer and you'd find that the focus is on portfolio management mainly in equities. In my opinion management of funds/stocks are different from FX. But it's still good to have as it's a very recognized piece of paper but after that it's experience that counts.

USD/JPY - Longs Liquidate After Verbal Intervention Fails
A few longs were taken on the back of the latest round of MOF verbal intervention and the lack of follow-through above 119.00 has caused some of the longs to liquidate.
There are a series of recent, rising lows that stretch from 118.30 to around 118.70 and a break of 118.70 would signal that a serious test of 118.30 might be
under way. The USD/JPY trades 118.81/86.

paid by domestic rivals, the FT added.
The group manages some 30 billion euros ($32 billion) on behalf of German
investors and includes leading players like Fidelity International, Merrill
Lynch Investment Managers, Axa, Capital International and Barclays Global
Investors.
The UK Investment Managers Association (IMA) will give evidence against
the tax proposals on Wednesday at a public hearing of the German federal
parliament, the report said.
Alan Ainsworth, IMA representative and deputy chairman of fund management
firm Threadneedle Investments, is likely to warn that foreign fund managers
may withdraw their money from Germany if the tax proposals go ahead, the FT
said.
Officials at the IMA and the German Embassy in London could not be
immediately reached for comment.

Hi - AUD/USD - the top of my range is 0.5885/90, with pull back levels at 0.5839 and 0.5791. I wouldn't buy over 0.5850 AUD until 0.5885 is at least touched. Buy on dip fib levels 0.5839 - 0.5791.
hope this helps a bit.

Forex is not just a trader's domain or paradise.
Commercial transactions are made continuously around the clock.
What activate people to act at particular times is another story.

Chicago AD - another view on GBP/USD. GBP currently at the bottom of my fibo range. (1.5978 max bottom ). I see targets @ 1.6041 - 1.6099 - 1.6153 and 1.6225 if 1.5978 not seen. I would give it a number of hours as believe the daily down cycle is near end. Do not add to your position, take a loss if need be at higher levels. good luck.

my thoughts today
usdyen is just stuck in the range talked about yesterday- no point selling under 119 at this stage until some news forces such a trade i would think we see it run up to 35-40. eur in a sideways consolidation phase- i never like to chase stops in an uptrend leads you to sell lows so ill just keep sitting long and add on dips - in my mind the only worry would be a move through 1.0450 gbp perhaps is the most worrying in price performance - we havent see the final rally yet so I think although it looks weak still have faith for one leg higher before the broader move down. gl to all

Chicago AD 00:42 // G'Day AD, In my system I think there is an outside chance that it might test 1.6032 if it can break up above 1.6004 bid, above 1.6032 targets 1.6050/60 but that maybe it for today.
As for cutting your trade only u can decide that but watch the 1.6032 area closely if seen to see it it will break.
GL with trade and all of above is jmvho....

Of more interest is the Question of the variation(totally opposite) in trend and momentum between bank and other brokers. I am not sure how much could be ascribed to thinness of market. Any advice on this point would be appreciated.

CAIRO (AP)--Iraqi President Saddam Hussein will send his cousin and close aide to Egypt this week for talks with President Hosni Mubarak amid intensive Mideast diplomatic efforts to avert a possible U.S-led war against Iraq.

Egypt's Middle East News Agency, reporting from the Iraqi capital Baghdad, said Saddam will dispatch Gen. Ali Hassan al-Majid, a member of his Revolution Command Council, with a letter for Mubarak on the brewing Gulf crisis.

Iraqi diplomats in Cairo said al-Majid will arrive in the Egyptian capital Friday.

"His mission is part of an Iraqi effort to explain Iraq's position on the relations with the U.N. Security Council and work of the weapons inspectors," one of the diplomats told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Al-Majid's visit comes amid frantic diplomatic efforts by Mideast leaders to defuse the U.S.-Iraqi standoff.
