Forbes predicts dollar dilemma
BY Michael Sainsbury, Economics
January 14, 2004
UNLESS the Australian dollar falls back to around US65c it could cause long-term damage to the economy, according to US economist and magazine publisher Steve Forbes.
The dollar closed yesterday at US77.89c and the trade weighted index against a basket of major currencies is at 15-year highs.
Mr Forbes said much of the local currency's fate lay in the hands of the US Federal Reserve, which was holding interest rates at historic 1 per cent lows, weakening the greenback's appeal.
Mr Forbes, in Sydney yesterday for a meeting of business leaders, believes the Fed must raise rates soon or risk inflation next year.
"They will try and hold it back as long as possible. I fear they will do too little too late," he said.
"The stock market will have a good year - companies have cut costs and margins are improving," he said. "But you will have to pick stocks this year. Last year you could have just thrown your money at the list."
Mr Forbes said he would put his money on blue chips and, if interest rates were increased, the technology-heavy Nasdaq list. "Businesses have not invested since 1999, particularly in hi-tech," he said. "Investment will pick up this year."
Mr Forbes said that US debt levels did not concern him too much. "The pick-up in the market will increase government receipts." Mr Forbes, who has previously run for the Republican presidential nomination on a flat tax platform, believes George Bush will win this year's US election easily from Howard Dean. Mr Forbes said the Chinese economy would get a rapid flow-on effect from US inflation next year as its currency, the renmimbi, was pegged to the US dollar. This would take the heat out of surging commodity prices driven by booming demand from China.

NZ chases SARS death report
The New Zealand embassy in Moscow said it was attempting to check a news agency report of a NZ man dying of apparent severe acute respiratory syndrome in Siberia
The German DPA agency, quoting Russia's Itar-Tass news agency, reported the man who died was a 44-year-old New Zealander invited to Russia by a marriage agency
After his death, pathologists discovered a severe infection of both lung chambers which had been caused by the Sars virus, the report said.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman Brad Tattersfield said nothing more was known.
"We're asking our guys to give us some information about it," he said.

Hi L,
well it's hard to say at this level GBP where it will go,
if 185 break then long is favored with first resistance at 18545, second one 18590~186 area,
If didnt break then short will find support at 184,
so watch this level and go long on 185 break and short on 185
rejection,

Also, 1.2700 is where my ema (based on 28 day commodity cycle) is located. Moves are known to move slightly below or above before moving the other way. So therefore, since this is a counter trend trade, it becomes extremely important for me to see markets not only move under this level but stay under. If not, there is a strong likelihood of bounce off that level (big gun support) This would be resumption of primary trend which is a buy dip strategy and the preferred choice.

Viies-- 1.2687 is 61.8% fibo retrace of 1.2557 to 1.2898 upmove. Actually, my system gives sell signal under 1.2720, I'm using break of 1.2687 as confirmation of further downside moves. I also believe this level represents good value for longs if buying pressure > Selling pressure at that time. For now this is not so, as sellers still in charge for the time being.

Extract from Greenspan speech tdy - does this imply he is OK with present US$ level?? :
"There is, for the moment, little evidence of stress in funding U.S. current account deficits. To be sure, the real exchange rate for the dollar has, on balance, declined about 15 percent broadly and roughly 25 percent against the major foreign currencies since early 2002. Yet inflation, the typical symptom of a weak currency, appears quiescent. Indeed, inflation premiums embedded in long-term interest rates apparently have fluctuated in a relatively narrow range since early 2002. More generally, the vast savings transfer has occurred without measurable disruption to the balance of international finance. Certainly, euro area exporters have been under considerable pressure, but in recent months credit risk spreads have fallen, and equity prices have risen, throughout much of the global economy."

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
MELBOURNE (Dow Jones)--National Australia Bank Ltd. (NAB) warned Tuesday that rogue foreign exchange options trades may
wipe up to A$180 million from its pretax profit, and then prompted a rally by the Australian dollar as it scrambled to cover
its losses, dealers said.
The situation was reported to the Australian Stock Exchange after an emergency board meeting was called early Tuesday after irregularities were discovered in trading accounts on Monday. Four unidentified employees have been suspended in relation to the trading.
These losses represent the biggest single foreign exchange scandal since Allied Irish Banks PLC (ALBK.DB) lost US$691.2 million in 2002 at the hands of one of its U.S.-based traders.
Australia's largest bank has contacted domestic financial services regulator Australian Prudential Regulation Authority, or APRA, which said it was "examining the matter."
The main concern is how such huge losses - usually prevented by internal financial parameters - managed to escape detection, and puts into question the bank's monitoring and supervisory regime.
A source at the bank said members of its foreign exchange options dealing team tried to claw back hefty losses on Australian dollar and New Zealand dollar options contracts incurred by one staff member since at least October.
"This looks like they've made some trading losses and tried to cover it up and trade their way out of it and failed," the source said.
It is understood losses had been compounded by a steep rise in the value of the Australian dollar against the U.S. dollar in recent months, and local players are surprised the exposure wasn't noticed sooner by the bank.
As one senior foreign exchange dealer from a rival bank said: "If you go over your (trading) limit, it doesn't matter whether you're in the money or out, you get marched out the door."
He also pointed out that there are many "weird and wonderful" options in the market that can complicate risk management. "They can hide land mines that occasionally blow up."
Others said it has been apparent for those in the foreign exchange options market that the bank has been holding unorthodox positions for some time.
"We have been aware for some time the National Australia Bank has been running some very, very large and unprofitable trades but this is even a surprise to us," another senior foreign exchange dealer said.
The extent of the losses has even caught members of NAB's dealing room by surprise.
"I'm shocked and dumbfounded," said one senior NAB foreign exchange staffer.

Beijing Road and others--I knew GBP/USD would move over 1.8490 but it caught me somewhat by surprise. I still get the feeling that dealers are offerring higher to generate spec deal flow. This happens during distribution phase as large operators use the "slingshot". Dealers holding large inventory will buy on a widely known support to give the impression of a reversal only to use the bounce as an opportunity to sell more lots on the uptick. After this process is over, they will mark down the prices because they know that weak handed longs were drawn in on the last uptick and now have "juicy" stops under them to hunt for. Thus the phrase "shark feeding" Stand Aside during this process helps preserve trading ammo and emotion. Think about using a stop-reverse if we go the other way, probably will be able to make up losses quickly.

Beijing Road 12:34 GBP/USD--1.8480/ 1.8490 is my next buy trigger but buy/sell pressure is still favoring distribution at this point. Sellers still have the upper hand for the time being. Would like to see 1.8385 tested first as I believe immediate risk is back to this level. If EUR/GBP sees further weakness, we might finish this current corrective move in GBP/USD and start uptrend again. Be patient, current mkt feels more like "shark feeding" than resumption of trend. Dr. C nice to see you again. As well as others, this is formally ATL Daimyo, Gulf Coast Daimyo-- I now live in Oakland, CA Anyway, this is how I see it--Update from my post yesterday-- Distribution in the EUR/USD not over yet. We're slowly approaching 1.2696/1.2676 buy-zone I mentioned yesterday. I'm expecting institutional support at this level, will go long again when buy pressure > sell pressure. Target 1.29 KO options.
If no show, I can say with confidence that the mark down phase has begun and will short with both hands as this would open up 1.2560/1.2550 and potential for much lower.
Patience is a virtue. Please note EUR/USD trading above 1.2780/1.2790 before the above scenario plays out will set off the "party train leaving without me" alert. If system confirms, will go long with buy-stop. Not a likely scenario as risk/reward may not be worth it at this point. Only an extremely strong move would bring this scenario into play.

OECD chief says concern over speed of dollar fall
ANKARA, Jan 13 (Reuters) - The head of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) said on Tuesday the speed of the dollar's decline rather than its actual level was a cause for concern Donald Johnston, on a visit to Turkey, also said the dollar's weakness was affecting many countries, not only those of the euro zone, thus spreading the impact widely."Obviously it's a matter of concern...I think it's the speed (of the decline), from what our economists say, rather than the level...," Johnston told reporters."I think everyone is surprised by the pace with which the dollar has retreated against the euro and other currencies as well, which has been seen by the economic community as a mitigating factor because it is not just against the euro."Whatever impact it has on the exports of other countries, this is shared by many countries, not just the euro zone

Hi mate,
today devellopement will tell us, if eur hold this level and didnt break 127 and close under 12645 then likely 130 to be print before anything else,
The Correction didnt happen yet but we had last week 250 pip
pullback and this week ~200 pip so far, so euro took a breath
and The Correction may be delayed coz of this
in these conditions still think best way to trade is scalping

FX UPDATE 13/01
Good morning,
***EUR***
EUR/USD (Currently 1.2750), 100 pips lower than monday's opening. The USD made another low (1,2899) before ECB Trichet voiced his concern of too much volatility in the EUR/USD, together with euro politicians. Market retraced to 1,2800 amid rumours of various central banks selling euros. Later the move was extended to 1,2735 in NY and 1,2715 earlier today in Asia. The pair seems to consolidate on current levels and levels to monitor closely today will be 1,2700-20 which should provide strong support. We still believe we have not seen the end of the uptrend yet, some technical retracement is much wellcome for the trend to consolidate before resuming. Medium target today around 1,2840-50 while long term target still is around 1,3500.
Data out today:
UK Ind production Dec expected 0.10% 09.30 GMT
US import prices Dec expected 0.4% 13.30 GMT
US export prices Dec 13.30 GMT
CA building permits 13.30 GMT
Gold around 425 , with WTI February at 34,89.
***JPY***
Usd/Jpy (currently 106,50), exactly like yesterday, the market is currently trapped inbetween selling pressure and fear of another round of BOJ intervention at 106,15 (where it all started last week). Because of this new situation, we have now turned neutral on the JPY market and wait for further developments to determine our next strategy.EUR/JPY (135,80) following EUR/USD price action. Support now stands around 135 with resistance at 136,50..
***GBP***
Cable (currently 1.8455) printed another new high yesterday (1,8565) before retracing to 1,8425 support zone. The market seems to have overstreched from here and we would be looking for some further test of 1,8420 with a possibility of retracement to 1,8330.
EUR/GBP (0.6905), broke 0,6930 support as we feared yesteday and is on its way to 0,6810 for the coming trading sessions.
Have a nice day,
Olivier

until now result like this if you follow my strategy :
1. buy eur/usd at 1.2844 and get stp at 1.2859 (loss 15 pips)
2.sell eur/usd at 1.2871 -done profit 26 pips
3.buy gbp/usd at 1.8530 for target 1.8513 (fact 1.8511), but my suggest exit at 1.8584. done profit 54 pips
still floating profit :
1.buy usd/chf at 1.2245
2.sell gbp/usd at 1.8511
that is not real trade, just calculation . Hope not admire if I always give tight stp for each entry. that's not suicide trade (LOL) but safety trade with strictly risk control management.

SF MB 05:39 GMT - EUR/USD : Basically the market is still consolidating between 1.25 - 1.30 and the mid-point reference is 1.275. One can use my daily cycle barrier for entry/exit reference. If you are a position trader one can establish short positions only if the market is trading below the lower barrier of my weekly cycle which would serve as an indicator for a possible change of the upward trending movement.

sarasota jf Hi there, with the fx generating so much this year , I have heard traders who never considered fx trying to get in on the act, the thing is its just like the Equities run and the Enrons of this world , once the money looks that good they just cant help themselves no matter what level sticking their fingers in the pie.
I have been to Sarasota really nice.

the us one had 2 sides- one was a total scam and the second a cash points scheme - this one without knowing complete facts was hiding losses probably to secure bonuses - so essentially fraud in all cases but its a diff style - it would be unrealistic not to think these things go on just more often handled privately

The options guys in the market have know this has been going on for years. Took the move in the Aud and NZD to flush them out. Senior management should have known it a long time ago and they buried it. Some big heads will role on this.

13:55 13Jan2004 RTRS-Irregular trades may cost Australia's NAB A$180 mln
SYDNEY, Jan 13 (Reuters) - National Australia Bank Ltd , the country's biggest bank, said on Tuesday it has incurred losses from unauthorised foreign exchange trading which could reach A$180 million ($141 million) on a pre-tax basis.
Four employees of the bank have been suspended in relation to the unauthorised activity, which NAB said came to light after its accounts were closed for the year to September 30, 2003.
The bank said it took immediate action to close out the losses and minimise any further losses being incurred.
Shares in NAB last traded down 1.4 percent at A$30.10, compared to the A$30.76 they were trading at prior to the announcement.

re: London Paul_ex trader 00:08 GMT remarks:
r-m would do well to stand back a bit and not try try so hard to catch every minor swing and concentrate a lot more on broader trends. It might be why the position he so fiercely desires with a bank is eluding him.
Please understand this is only a constructive criticism nor a knock on him or his work. It sometimes gives an almost frantic air about his analysis that would be off-putting to a prospective employer.

ldn MDB......cheers, no problem.
from a medium term view, i am not yet prepared to go long USD agst anything.....I would be in Fed rate hikes were close, but I dont think they are, and as such I think the deficits will still weigh on USD sentiment, hence I will look for dips to buy euros, aud etc. I do think the USD is in a long term down trend that has legs, but a correction that i thought was a few months away I feel might be coming sooner.
Not being a day trader, i dont have too much to add to most here that are much better at it, and more involved, hence dont post that often.
gd luck to all.

Sydney Sellers get desperate as flats glut hits suburbs
The oversupply problem that has dogged the city apartment market has spread to the suburbs, with some off-the-plan buyers having trouble recouping costs when they try to sell.
A property analyst, Angie Zigomanis of BIS Shrapnel, said some units had been re-sold for less than the off-the-plan price.
