FRANKFURT -- Stubbornly high oil prices are beginning to hit Europe's economy harder than other regions' as they undermine already weak growth and hold back the euro zone's tenuous recovery. With oil prices staying well above $50 a barrel, many economists are backtracking on their view that Europe's economy would accelerate in 2005. Instead, most models suggest growth in Europe will falter if oil prices don't drop back to nearer $30 in coming months -- which the oil-futures market suggests won't happen. Many economists had asserted that Europe was insulated from oil-price shocks because its oil consumption is less than that of the U.S. and its taxes make up a bigger portion of already-high fuel prices. But their concern has shifted from inflation, where the impact may be small, to growth, where it may be significant. In the latest sign that the euro-zone recovery is losing momentum, a German business survey on Monday showed unusually weak hiring plans for this stage in the business cycle. "Surging oil prices are hurting the recovery," said the German chambers of industry and commerce, which conducted the survey. "The environment is getting tougher," says Holger Fahrinkrug, an economist with censored AG in Frankfurt. "Transient high oil prices can be avoided, but now people are losing the belief that oil prices will fall."

LOL...yeah...nothing like a good power to weight ratio!!!! One more thing about cars before it gets busy CCY wise. We have decided to put TURBO in son's 2000SS Camaro. Going for fuel injected street car record (LS1). Car will have 1400 rear wheel horsepower (35 PSI) and is tuneable via a laptop for street use as well (14 PSI). Car will be in EIGHTS easy in 1/4 at over 170 MPH with basically stock chassis (no tube chassis, no tubs).

On the CCY scene, Charts are mixed. Go with LONGER timeframes and CONFIRM before trades or take SMALLER lot sizes.

bucket of water -

when the bucket of water over fills its size it overflows, market breaks high range, trades higher - when the bucket has a leak, market trades lower.

when the bucket neither overflows or leaks - there is enough in and out flow, market is balance --- stay out.

What size bucket?? You decide.

Is anyone familiar with the "Open Range Method" and how it might apply to Forex? The "Open Range Method" is a trading concept where one observes the high low prices of the first 30 minutes of the open of the market & one then goes long if the current price is above that high or go short if the current price is below that price. I have found that this seems to work on cable based on the 30 minutes chart from 8:00 to 8:30 GMT which corrresponds to 9:00 to 9:30 AM London time. This is an hour later than the official London open as you just told me. I wouls appreciate any feedback on this. TIA Mauricio

Ldn 20:09 GMT October 19, 2004// I don't want to insult your experience but since the chart snoozes, there are a lot of entry level traders on the forum lately, I'm sure who'd like to know this. One factor that's producing the random wild fractal E/$ chart is the ever constricting "triangle formation" which started forming about a year ago for the support leg and Feb 19 for the resistance leg. Back off a ways and check the 3 year chart..you can see it better, draw your 2 lines. As the triangle forms a point (we're in that point right now practically) then note the range constricts less and less and less and all that pent up energy finally releases like a champagne cork. When it does, it's called a breakout. Since this is where we are now it is not surprizing we've got this nasty chart right before the breakout.

Also you will note that the start of a session be it NY, Asian or London the activity (volitility) is greater and you can take pips easier..most of the time. As the session wears on, most days, it relaxes 'til the opening of the next session in succession. The NY session even opens many times with a little 10-30 pip peak right at 0600-0730 EST as the banks adjust their foreign transactions and purchase currencies for the day. They sell USD and buy Euros to do this, a mini flood, less demand, hence the peak in the E/$ chart.

BTW on my 1 day-1 year chart E/$ appears to be coming to a mini peak yet it's still on the up path. Baring bad US news I think it's about to short to 1.2350-30 or less, exactly like the 5 small peaks preceeding today's.

London Q - tradestation has a trading platform that has an integrated program language. You can code your own trading system. You can have your program route your signals directly to tradestations' futures brokerage and have everything executed automatically.

Upside...truly hands off blackbox trading system, insured accounts.

Downside...you have to learn how to code in their language, execution in FX futures is sloppy in comparison to OTC counterparties/brokers.

It would seem that E/$ has gone up "enough" this leg and would then be overbought to hades. Unfortunately we aren't sure. Patience pays a couple more days. Obvious to us that there are a lot of Euro long positions to "defend"; at some point all those buyers HAVE to become sellers. When they turn coat and sell, the chart will collapse fast producing a 'bottom'. When that bottom is hit, say 150-200 pips DOWN, it bounces once or twice to confirm (and that bottom could even be from 1.2150 upward [a lot of air space!]) then I'm in for cheap Euros for a delicious long-long. But since the mother of all lines says 'BOTTOM' is at 1.22 at the least, question is where the blue blazes is 'bottom'? I'm not touching the phone until I see something concrete.

You lose your profit because you get greedy. And greed kills. Get some sticky notes, put them on your monitor. They should read:

DON'T TRADE TO TRADE - if your unsure of a trade, DON'T!

GREED KILLS - A good daliy profit target is 30 pips cause going for 50 could lose that 30.

DUMP A LOSER - holding a losing contract just costs you money. Set a stop loss and leave it be.

The only buy signal for me in cable is around 1.8070. I would sell until that number is broken. Lower I wouldnt buy cable untill 1.7920-30.

Eur/gbp is a buy here .6933 and a 15 pips stop will be sufficient.

A longer term euro/sterling would target .7040-70

And bdq:

Try using these for awhile.

Simiple moving average set @ 40
Exponential moving average set @ 20
RSI set @ 14
Using a 5 minute chart to follow the day and a one minute for entry points.

As well as a 15 minute with candles for chart patterns.

When ever the simiple is below the exponential the market is in an up trend and vice versa. DO NOT trade when the line crosses, many time its a false signal. Let the market take a direction then trade on a pull back.

This is the way I trade, it may work for you.

Good luck

I find trading is exactly like poker,

Don't be afraid of folding a losing hand. But don't give anything away. At first don't try to pick the tops or bottoms, you'll always lose. Get in on montentum. Look for no more than a 30 pip profit. Enter SL's and don't move them if the market move against you.

In time you will start to win. It took me six months of paper trading before I ever executed a trade. All markets have personalities, learn them. Learn their tells. And you'll start to win.

Anyone will tell you, learning to trade is like going to school. Only a fool will trade without knowing the market, what economic data does to a market and what other factor move the market.

Don't give up. Stop trading with real money and start paper trading. You will work out a plan that will work for you.

And most important, set out a plan and follow it. Don't let others dictate your plan. This is a business of risk vs. reward. Learning to manage that risk is what trading is all about. The vast majority of traders out there are gambling as well, if they weren't they'd have a 100m in the market and be clear 25M a month. That is not realisitic.

I only trade with 100k in the market. And only about 5-10% is in currencies. The rest is in comodities and indices. I never trade with more that 35% of my account balance. I settle all my profits on a weekly basis.

Look for obtainable goals. Not 6 figures in 60 days, that will never happen.

I'm not saying I have it figured out, after 2 years of full time trading, I'm still learning. You must be willing to always keep learning.

Good luck

It is becomming harder to achieve easy scalping pips with most retail brokers requoting more often, not honouring stops/limits and generally being more criminal in their activities.

There are however still places that are not as heavily advertised as the above that offer a good, secure service. There is even a few that honour stops/limits even if there is a 2big fig move in 1 second. You have to pay for this though but its worth it.

And that's what the market is waiting for as to hit the $ in the coming minutes... with some confidence...for a while at least.

the fact that everybody talk about oil and Japanesse economy made me to look on facts to keep on playing on JPY going much stronger, so HYBRID (90%++ market share controlled by sans) shows me that oil prices @ USD 75/- will harm this technology...but facts also show that technology development is going faster than the oil prices higher.

but still, facts and playing FX not always go hand in hand.

I believe you are refering to "Level 2" on stocks. If this is the case, the reason that forex dealers don't supply it is that we don't trade on an exchange. There are some forex dealers who supply something similar to "Level 2", but it only keeps track of the contracts that are being traded inhouse as oppose to worldwide. This is also the reason that there is no "Volume " data availablee. I hope this answers your question.

"We had good news on the earnings front from IBM and Texas Instruments, and the fact that oil backed up is a positive," said Arthur Hogan, chief market analyst at Jefferies & Co. Hogan said he expected the market to remain solid as long as investors were focusing on strong earnings results.

That's the risk, or "surprise side", but there's nothing to indicate that the CPI will be higher than the 0.2% expected. So a reading of 0.4% is a big surprise, a 0.3% reading a minor surprise, & below 0.2% a reverse surprise that would likely push bonds much higher (& be bearish USD view). by John Hardy S a x o research.

GOES B747 - just wanted to say your comment was appreciated - I wasn't aware of the invoicing change, which is important & one more piece of the puzzle. My view is that in the long run the west is repeating what Japan went through in the early to late nineties, - stock market crash followed real estate boom/bust etc... So the next few months could be interesting vis-a-vis west currencies vs yen...

Chinesse and Indian flags are waving all around Tokyo (multinationals HQ door steps) for the moment.
Japanesse multinationals/exporters will start invoicing all their European subs starting from APR/05 in JPY; means that all rules of this games are to change !!!

during the coming 5-6 months we will have 8-10 FX trading intradays that will bring moves of 500-600 pips per day...holding base position of LONG JPY will pay great.

There was a kiwi farmer (new zealander) travelling in outback Australia on holiday. Driving along, he came across an ozzy holding up a sheep in front of him against the fence, with the sheeps back legs down his gumboots.

The kiwi pulls over, a bit confused by the sight, and calls out, hey, what are you doing mate? In Australia we shear our sheep.

The ozzy calls back, I'm not sharing this sheep with anyone ...

Thoughts on CAD - I really like trading CAD, on the whole it's a good one for people like me with a technical bent..But I'm staying out of this one for the next little while cause there's a lot of fundamental issues I haven't straightened out - e.g. the rise in fuel prices - supposedly good, but then again Canadians are the biggest per capita users of heating in the world (IIRC), plus big users of cars (the country is essential 80 miles wide & 3000 long..). The last major surge in gas prices fueled separatism like mad, with the West telling the East to freeze in the dark, & the East using it's political power to steal Western resources
The dollar looks strong but that's bad for exports, & we are an export country - mostly to the US; the CAD surge has been fueled largely by US investment getting away from US pre-election uncertainty and into bed with a brand new PM (and a former FM to boot) here - but he's old hat now and certainly not as good as he looked a few months ago.And finally the BOC may want to prove they really aren't puppets by forgoing the rate increase already priced in. But that last one is pretty unlikely :). End of ramble, GL/GT all :)

China's Taigang boosts stainless steel, eyes nickel
Tue Oct 19, 2004 02:46 AM ET
By Polly Yam
HONG KONG, Oct 19 (Reuters) - China's Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel Co. Ltd. (000825.SZ: Quote, Profile, Research) will more than double its capacity by the end of 2006 by building a 1.5 million-tonne plant, a senior company official said.
Taigang, China's top stainless steel producer, was also considering investing in overseas nickel mines to cover its rising consumption of the metal, which is used to add strength and sheen to stainless steel, he said.

"The plant will cost 16.8 billion yuan ($2 billion). We will finance it from our internal funds and bank loans," the Taigang official said late on Monday. China's stainless steel output was expected to grow almost 20 percent to 2.3 million tonnes this year on soaring demand from the construction, automotive and household appliance sectors, Beijing-based analyst group, Antaike, said last month.

China consumes around a quarter of the world's stainless steel and it imports more than half of its requirements.

Taigang's new plant will bring capacity to 2.5 million tonnes a year by the end of 2006 from 1 million tonnes currently.

The company's output is expected to reach 750,000 tonnes this year from last year's 670,000 tonnes. It will still be operating below capacity because it slowed production in the first half of the year for upgrading projects.

Taigang planned to run at full capacity in 2005, he said.

OVERSEAS NICKEL MINES

The Taigang official said the company was interested in investing in high-quality, overseas nickel assets, as China's own production was struggling to keep up with stainless steel demand.

But he did not name any specific regions or projects, and he added the company did not have any prior expertise in managing nickel operations.

China's largest trading house, state-controlled Minmetals Corp., is in exclusive negotiations with Canada's Noranda Inc. (NRD.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) to acquire the company for around $5 billion.

Noranda's assets include a 60 percent share in Falconbridge Ltd. (FL.TO: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's third-largest nickel producer.

Industry sources said Taigang had been linked with a possible plan to join Minmetals and other Chinese companies in bidding for Noranda, but the Taigang official said the company had not received any invitation to take part.

China currently imports around half of the nickel it uses.

Max is a very good at what he does and he is pointing out the bullish ascending triangle I have been talking about for a while now. His views are similar to mine in that respect as I have said long-term to mid-term money is buying on dips mode for eur/usd pair. Next heavy resistance (2640-50) needs to be taken out if the high for the year is to be tested. I have T/Ls around 1.2320-2290 and Mother T/L around 2230-40 for now as long as these supports are not taken out the bulls are in control. Hopefully we are seen the continuation of the $ bear trend beginning again IMHO. GL GT

Bid rejected, so Axa parent walks away
French insurer Axa has walked away from its bid to gain full control of Axa Asia Pacific after local directors rejected its takeover proposal, telling shareholders the final offer price of $4.05 was "not good enough".The $3.4 billion deal has been taken off the table and sources close to Axa said it was "unlikely" the company would come back with an alternative proposal .Shares in Axa AP tumbled 35c to $3.75 as investors unwound the takeover premium.

Finally seen a dip on the eur/usd pair that I have been expecting with support now at 1.2450-40, 2415-25, 2380-70 and 2350-40 for now. I am still waiting for 2380-60 to print before any bullish move continues. Retracement numbers are still 1.2455-60, 2415-20, 2375-80 and 2340-45. I believe the key support here is around the 2340-50 area. Intraday indicators are unwinding from O/B with mid term and long-term indicators bullish. Like I said before long-term money continues to buy on dips and that’s what has been showing in my charts IMHO. GL GT

It could be at 1st support 1.2400 by NY open tomorrow or it could play around a few days more then drop like martain said. I'm waiting for support to be hit before placing longs.

Goldcoast martin//Tks! Oil is seen to come down or at least stablize under $50 as too much price would diminish demand...spur alternative energy research/subsidy (badly needed and long overdue!), and overall cost oil companies/greed mongers more in the long run. Yes, low oil helps USD. I hope you're right in that if/when E/$ sees low 1.23's, 1.22's it "should" hit that support test to recoil up past 1.25. I hope I don't "should" on myself with that thinking.

Man oh man, this E/$ chart is about as nasty as I've seen in some time. I've no idea now of what the rogue pair wants to do..it could meander where it is now doing up-down mini rangeing 50 pips, or slide 100 pips to 1.2375 or rise 100 pips to 1.2575. I want to say it'll short in a few days but have no real proof. So I'm staying out 'til either some semblance of support is hit such as 1.2350-1.2390 or a resistance of 1.2580-1.2600 is hit. Otherwise I see nothing but loses caused by wild arsed speculation stacking up for anyone other than pip raiders..& I don't even fancy doing that. Predictions using channels, ranges etc. aren't in my opinion worth a flip at this point as they tell you NOTHING you don't already know.

This is just one of those times when y'all can trade up a storm if you want & I yet feel no compulsion to enter this quagmire. See you at support or resistance. And as far as an uptrend goes, I still don't have enough proof that we're actually IN the base of an uptrend change although it's highly likely and due (3 year chart). US econ news (good or bad) this week will be an up movement for this chart..if anything is gonna happen spectacular, it's probably this week.

It would appear that the rate hike of 25 basis points is already priced into the market. The sharp rise in CAD since Sept and record oil prices are causing concern that the economy could weaken quickly and hurt exports.
I suspect CAD has reached a short term plateau.

US Election Results Headed Again To Courts? (FXA)

With the US election quickly approaching, and polls showing a virtual dead heat, the odds of the 2004 presidential election ending closely are considered high by most political pundits. For the sake of argument say whoever wins Ohio and Florida wins the election, or more appropriately the electoral college vote. What does the loser do, if the statewide defeats in Ohio and Florida are just a few thousand, or in the case of Florida in 2000, just 537?... See fill story on the TF..
