New Zealand's labour market was weaker than expected in the December quarter, with unemployment rising to 4.6% from 4.4% against Employment growth was far weaker than consensus, rising just 0.1% over the quarter and 2.7% over the year, well below the 0.4% median expectation. This likely reflects the slowdown in inward migration, which was just 4,170 in the last quarter, down from 7,490 in September and 9,760 a year earlier. The participation rate fell slightly to 66.5% from 66.6%, against expectations of an unchanged result. With employment growth slowing, upward pressure on wages is likely to be less than expected this year--wages growth was very subdued in December--suggesting that the Reserve Bank may not be in such a hurry to tighten
policy further.

I share your view. If you accept the view that fair value for this pair is well below 105, then it is almost obvious that BOJ's objectives are not to hold 105 level indefinitely, but to allow an orderly descent over a period of time. Only a matter of time before everyone's talking about BOJ defending 104 and so on...

MARKET OUTLOOK On Wednesday, the second leg of the Treasury Refunding - the sale of $16 bln 5-yr notes - follows Greenspan. Given the market"s reaction to the stellar 3-yr note auction results on Tuesday (there was record retail demand), the Street is expecting hawkish testimony from the FOMC Chairman before the House Financial Services Committee
Greenspan"s monetary policy testimony is overwhelmingly the most important economic event Wednesday. It is always an important event, but this time the question at hand is particularly serious. Will the most accommodative monetary policy in over 4 decades come to an end in the next few months? There is no guarantee of a clear answer, but at least, we can look for useful guideposts. mms

LDN -IMHO re: yen - seems not a lot of spec shorts at this level but lot of folks are willing to buy any dips down to 105.20 expecting a quick move back towards 106 - if the buyer of last resort doesn't show up it could be quite a scramble // I wouldn't put any faith in CBs or Fin Min statements about levels - 105 has no more magic than all those other levels - like a drunk falling downstairs (this must be the bottom)

The Reagan airport closing was no big deal.

ARLINGTON, Va. - A security breach forced about 200 passengers out of a terminal and off some airplanes at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport Tuesday.

"We did have a woman wander away from the screening area as she was waiting to be secondary screened" in Terminal A, said Amy von Walter, a spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration. "The decision was made to evacuate the terminal and re-screen all the passengers."

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority spokesman Tom Sullivan said three planes parked at Terminal A gates were emptied, and those passengers were among the people evacuated around noon.

"After the evacuation we had K-9 teams and law enforcement search the secure side," said von Walter, adding that planes parked at Terminal A gates were also re-screened.

Von Walter said re-screening began 15 minutes after the terminal was cleared. The woman who caused the concern was never found, though von Walter said she is believed to have been among those who went through security again.

According to Sullivan, it took about 20 minutes to get everyone back in the terminal, and things were back to normal by early afternoon.

London, here's one of the stories:

MONROE TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) -- The Williamstown Post Office was evacuated Tuesday morning after several postal carriers found a powdery substance in their mail, officials said.

Members of the Gloucester County hazardous materials squad entered the building Tuesday afternoon in an effort to identify the substance, according to Cathy Yarosky, spokeswoman for the U.S. Postal Service.

Beirut MK, technically in USD/CAD the break of 1.3280 should bottom at least near 1.3130, however todays closure above 1.33 level may see a slight higher levels say upto 1.3360 level which seems to be quite strong resistance for now, for sure the current support level at 1.3220 has now weaken significantly as supply has exhausted at this level, and therefore this time the fall will definately break this level to see the next support at 1.3165

My studies based on past chart patterns suggest that euro made a fase break earlier by peircing through 1.2760 (yesterday high) and reaching 1.2787/88 new high and then followed by a sharp decline threatening the existing low. The above scenario would apply also to the Swiss. It is just a matter of time before solid confirmation is ascertained with the break of today's hi and low.

“The market will likely conserve its energy for tomorrow's first day of Fed Chairman Greenspan's two-day testimony on monetary policy, which coincides with the $16 bln apiece in 5- and 10-year note auctions. There are expectations the shorter maturities will fair well, but that 10-year may falter. Greenspan will be on the hot seat in his House and Senate testimony and will need to balance positive economic talk, while not dismissing growing deficits, and reiterating the FOMC pronouncement that the Fed can remain patient regarding accommodative rates.”

I agree to a point, Gbp/Jpy seems to be running out of steam, and hit 50 pips shy from our projected target of 198 early last week so far, and stopped on our channel top....so we'll watch it closely for failure signs from here.

One thing to watch and consider, is hourly MACD bearish divergence in the works but I wouldn't expect this to be the last peak, but maybe a few more steps up the ladder and then a retracement of sorts.

look at 1.8625 area as gift opportunity to buy cable IMHO. Should hold if breakout pattern is legitimate.....1.8500-15 area would be the next major support for this new move up to possible 2.XXX levels.

Gbp/Jpy 197.00 area needs to hold for another move towards 198 and 220.0 areas, but a dip to 196.50 isn't out of the cards right now.....

Cable chart shows a crossover in MACD but below the hi altho price is hitting new hi - doubt if this move will carry too far and the correction will be bigger than recent

EUR/USD - similar to cable but price lagging and MACD crossover is not as definite - could hit new high but MACD will lag and correction willl be bigger

AUD/USD - looks a bit like Cable chart but MACD not as strong so maybe .7940 level

If the Americans did not invade Iraq, history would have judged them as indifferent to the suffering of a nation by a tyrant who gased raped and financed terror. Saddam himself was enough a reason to invade Iraq. Thus you may still consider the americans as liberators. The pretext or reason of WMD should have been replaced by... liberation from a tyrant. Then like the help extended to Liberia the invasion could be better understood.

FX UPDATE 10/02
Good morning,

***EUR***
EUR/USD (currently 1,2760), 30 pips higher than Monday opening. As expected, the market consolidated inside 1,2650-1,2760 before closing the day in NY around 1,2700. 1,2770-80 seems to be offering some minor resistance for the time beeing, but the market remains bullish and we expect a break on the upsides that will trigger a test of 1,2900.
We believe that EUR/USD is trying to break the 1,29 upper barrier of its consolidation pattern. Any attempt to take 1,2900 will have to be monitored very carefully, as many stops could trigger a 500 pips run to 1,3400.
For today we will be looking to buy on 1,2680 and 1,2620 for a break of 1,2780. Our medium target remains at 1,3500.

Data out today:
UK trade balance Dec M/M expected -4,3Bio 09.30 GMT
US redbook Dec 13.55 GMT

Gold around 409,50 , with WTI March at 32,88.

***JPY***
USD/JPY (currently 105,45) lost all its overnight gains (falling from 105,90 down to 105,40). Increasing talks of stops below 105,30 doing the rounds in the market. We still like to sell upticks (106,10) for a retest and break of 105,30 as we cannot see how the japanese authorities can keep the pair from falling below 100 in the medium term.
EUR/JPY (currently 134,60) looking to challenge previous highs at 135,50 (next one being 137,50).

***GBP***
Cable (currently 1,8680) broke 1,86 as expected. We believe the pair is on its way to the 1,90 level we called earlier in January.
EURGBP (0,6840) trading inside 0,6820-0,6880. We still favour the downside for the medium term, today we'll sell 0,6880 if seen for a 0,6820 target.
Have a nice day,

Olivier

If there is any foundation to the news item that OPEC is
switching away from USD as a billing currency, -I haven´t
seen it anywhere-, then that would be extremly bearish USD.

It would mean that USA would either have to swing quickly
from a trade deficit to a surplus, which is easier said than
done, or start to buy huge amounts of currencies to pay for
it´s imports of oil.

Aus RBA very in-touch with politics. The question is really: which side does the RBA fall on? Exporters being squeezed. But inflation being kept down. Interest rates supporting house prices. AUD is a widely traded currency, but it is still a boutique item. That's all folks.

On Weekly one can argue this is still a wave 3 up as there has been no substantial correction during this rally. This is matching the double top pattern we had back in November when it topped out around 1.1840 then went down to around 1.1350. That correction lasted 5 weeks and hit the 20 week Bollinger midpoint then rallied up from there. We are also in week 5 of this correction from 1.2895. One main difference we have fundamentally is Europe's displeasure above 1.28. Back around 1.18 no European complaints. So attaching a wave count to all this for those interested from 1.13-1.29 I say we are now seeing wave 5 of the big wave 3.

Intervention has to be across-the-board and consistent and at a point that the market is edgy. Euro/USD has been trading within a sustained range for months. If there is intervention, it will probably fall apart fairly early. More interested in USD/AUD, very scary .

After price break 1.2755 that’s mean price will get 1.2782. This level is the end of hoping to get 1.2210. Price is very potential/ideal if move down to get 1.2210 from 1.2782. Be carefull when price is on the way to get 1.2210 there is two number that potential give buy reaction. These numbers are 1.2565 (pullback to ideal level at 1.2676 and then go down again to get 1.2210 as a bottom major. But if price show you 1.2555 that’s mean toll free to get 1.2210.
But if price show you 1.2795 that’s mean give you sign price will up again to get 1.2836 as the top minor for middle term phase. From 1.2836 I only predict price move down to get only 1.2468 (pullback level). To hope 1.2210 after price to get 1.2836 is difficult.

Trade Strategy :
• Sell at 1.2782 for target 1.2630 with stp at 1.2802
• Sell at 1.2836 for target 1.2470 with stp at 1.2856
• Sell at 1.2676 for target 1.2215 with stp at 1.2696 (track-4)
• Buy at 1.2655 for target 1.2836 with stp at 1.2625 (track-1)
• Buy at 1.2565 for target 1.2676 with stp at 1.2645 (track-1)
• Buy at 1.2468 for target 1.2510 with stp at 1.2448 (track-4)
• Buy at 1.2215 for target 1.2315 with stp at 1.2185 (all track)
• Buy at 1.2000 for target 1.2350 with stp at 1.1985 (pullback for long term resistant)

I think eur will ease against US .The statement in G7 is confusing 4 traders, but a strong message 4 G7 community.I feel there will b good amount of interventions in future.Because the saying is as follow
"Interventions should be kept to a minimum, but we never say never, either," Snow said, according to media reports. Snow repeated that a strong dollar is in the interest of the United States. "

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs.
