It's an interesting problem, ab. The correlation has certainly been strong, at least since the 1st of April (after Japanese Fiscal-year end). Political pressure in the US is building for lower Crude prices. Techinically, Crude closed higher in NY today, but not above the previous high. A close below today's low (basis July) over the next couple of day's could signal a short term top. If it goes into a correction (every other commodity is!), I'll certainly be a buyer of Yen. If GEP is right and USD/JPY prints a blue candle today, it would match the Crude action today in NY. FWIW... GL/GT

Hi,
technically speaking, gbp/usd shows a negative divergence on MACD ( 1 hour chart), and a negative bias on the stochastic as well. the dollar stoke back at the end of the day on eur/usd and usd/chf. I think gbp/usd could return on the 50 ema, that's about 60 pips from here. I went short 1.7809 for 1.7750 , stop 1.7843 GT/GL

Huge day today for metals across the board. Is this a false move or is the dollar ready to resume falling?? Not sure what caused the dollar weakness last night and today?

I went in and bought some selective metal stock laggers today. All of the metals were involved, both precious and base. Big moves in copper and nickel. Silver up .23 and gold up $7????

This event in gaza today could light a big fuse??

iw- its very tricky factors are coming and going on a daily basis for the eurusd - asia is the key for eurusd orders at the moment so look for more activity in that timezone - most of the eurusd stops for long holders now sit under 1.1920 below some us bids at 1.1930 - its obv where the topside are placed - eurusd is still a range everytime it threatens the downside it fails and same on topside - as i suggested last week - hit and run tactics keep you alive unless your cat is as good as the oilmans - gl.gt

Sure, jf, the big fx-machine is very good at massaging the

best observation I can make is that we should hold above

After spending the correcting intraday o/b status, EUR/USD
made an hourly key reversal up in the last hour, without ever
testing the hourly bollinger midpoint. This is a quite bullish
set-up, and would expect the previous top at 1,2070ish to
crack this time around. Next better resistance at 1,2170/80
and 1,2200 only.

If the story about Asian CB:s reallocating away from USD is
true, would not want to be long USD. Truckloads to come on
the market in that case. USD/CAD is o/s intraday, but looks
weak overall. IMHO

while a few are musing longer term opines..
Martin and co, I realize people have been very bullish USD on the carry trade unwind theory and it's been a hard move to argue with but in the big big picture we have only so far seen pull backs to the break-out levels. ozzie @ .68, eur$ 1.16, cable 1.73 and $jpy @ 115 were the major acceleration/inflextion points of the USD downtrend. That we have retraced (virtually) to those levels is perfectly normal and acceptable behaviour. The first thing most people learn technically is that break lines get retested and therefore validated or voided (depending). I'm not saying the dollar can't be on a trip to the moon but until these major levels are taken out all we have done is re-build for bigger moves further down the track.
e.g. Ozz rallied from 48c to 80c in little over two years and with no substantial pullback at any time (bar the 58 to 52.5c in the first couple of months of the move). Cable was locked in a 1.40/1.70ish range for eleven years before it's break through 1.73 in november.

hard to stand firmly behind a 24 hour view but general feeling here is that euro will be the least inspired of the major pairs, partly down to cross activity; it may remain within a range of the 50 day sma and 10 day sma for example, so the levels you have just posted in reference to whitesea's comments may prove to be spot on...gl gt

aussie...has not long ago cleared system o/s targets on all dalies triggered (6977)....road if you're around, one of the systems has had me in this pair on the long side since 7th May, with further longs made each day since...I am now no longer involved in this pair but I stress that that doesn't mean it is necessarily coming down to new lows, it is simply down to the rules of the strategy being applied...gl gt

Charting Europe: Oversold Aussie Looks Worth A Buy
LONDON The Aussie dollar's nearly 6% devaluation against the greenback leaves it ripe for a recovery.
Wednesday morning's action, which hauled it up and out of Tuesday's inside-day high at US$O.6995, signals a reversal of the medium-term downtrend which has seen it lose almost eight U.S. cents from its early April high.
So expect a bounce by the weekend - the six-hourly momentum indicator now shows it's very oversold.
An inside day acts as pause in a trend or as a precursor of a potential trend change, which is why the daily range is often comparatively small as investors reassess their positions.
Traders might buy the Aussie dollar around current levels of US$0.6995, expecting at least a bounce back toward the 38.2% Fibonacci retracement of the May decline (from its May 5 US$0.7349 high) at US$0.7072.
Above that lies the US$0.7125 zone, which corresponds to the 50% Fibonacci retracement, and the April 29 low which will act as resistance. It's even possible the Aussie will rise as far as the 61.8% Fibonacci retracement at US$0.7178, but that will depend on the strength of the expected bounce.
A suggested stop level US$0.6918

FX UPDATE 19/05
Good morning,

***EUR***
EUR/USD (currently 1,1200), roughly same level as Tuesday's opening. The market consolidated inside 1,1935-1,2020 yesterday despite a weaker german ZEW index. Again his morning we have the feeling that the market is accumulating momentum for another upsides test (target 1,2170). First support appears at 1,1950-70 then 1,1900 where we will be looking to build long positions. Resistance around 1,2050, then 1,2100. We still favour range trading with bullish bias.

Data out today:

UK BOE minutes 08.30 GMT
EURozone trade balance March expected 6650M 09.00 GMT

Gold at 380,00, with WTI June higher at 40,30

***JPY***
USD/JPY (113,30). The pair is retracing to 113,10 support zone on NIKKEY rebound. The market is still looking bid with evident buying interest emerging around 113,10-20, 115 still remains to be broken to open door to 120 level.
EUR/JPY currently 136,05, looking rangy inside 135-137.

***GBP***
Cable (currently 1,7725), still hovering inside 1,7620-1,7740. BOE minutes today could give a boost to the GBP if it appears that some members voted for a 50 bp hike on the last meeting. supportive level. We are looking for another try of the upsides later (medium term target 1,8050).
EUR/GBP (0,6770) was rejected ahead of 0,6820 and still consolidating. We still favour some buy on dips strategy (intermediate 0,6870 target before 0,7000 long term).
Have a nice day,

Olivier

But fact the aud$ is not a buy..When i say it might go up awhile or stabilizes it doesnt mean buy it, little stabilizations or little up's are norms in down-trends..to buy it it will need to show strenght..(which it hasnt done since falling from .80 to .68.)..

I am however watching the euro$ for possible signs of firming..so far little signs here n there but nothing concrete.

AUD/USD : The congested area of my weekly cycle indicates that the market has a tendency to trade between 0.6805 - 0.7020 and the mid-point reference is 0.6913. The key quantised level of my weekly cycle is located at 0.6858. AUD/USD was able to find support around 0.68 in Asian session. It is likely that the market will try to tackle the upper trading range of 0.6967 - 0.7020 later this week.

Well based on hourly RSI, AUD could pullback from this current area. I'm on the long side at this stage and will dump when the current flow turns negative once more. As for 0.7000, anything possible... aud likes to retrace after a new low.. and as we know nothing moves in a straight line. GT

With the Japanese stock market taking a beating lately and causing some margin calls, the demand for YEN could be INCREASING therefore causing potential shorts in USD/JPY, GBP/JPY etc. If the stock market DOES NOT rebound soon, you could expect even MORE of a demand for YEN in order to settle on those accounts.
