1:5 sounds reasonable, but beyond my confort zone. Maybe one day I will graduate too.

My main point is: if you are in one trade with 1:20 margin and a tight automatic stop, you are screwed. If you are in 5 trades with 1:4 margin each, for the same total leverage, then you can be profitable with mental stops only. At least works for me so far.

the charts will be a hassle to find from the main website, here is a direct link :

w>>w>>w>>.>>d>>a>>i>>l>>y>>f>>x.>>com>>/>>fx>>powerchart>>/Chart>>Station>>.>>h>>t>>m>>l

(just remove these things: ">>")

you can set up lots of different workspaces and browse through tens of charts under one minute. I have about 12 pairs in different time frames, so I can usually find a trade at any time of day and night.

We usually run each trade at 5:1 leverage. We will also sometimes add to the positions in 5:1 leverage increments after we have moved a HARD STOP on the previous trades to break even.

I don't run mental stops on trailing stops or take profit limits. But if your timing is not perfect in a good active 2 way market, you can be right in your idea and get stopped out in whippy action with hard stops at your initial entry.

This may not be aceptable to many others here....but I really don't give a crap, and it isn't open for debate.

the last one has successful trading records posted online in its king of mini competition, if you have access to historical quotes you can gain a lot of interesting trading ideas from those outstanding traders. But don't get carried away with superhigh monthly gains, look for moderate gains that you can achieve persistently for many months and years.

why not just use very wide stops you mean? I have give this a lot of thought. In my limited experience, spikes and triggered stops occur more often than unexpected bad news. There is also "expected" bad news, i.e. employment reports and other important releases, which I watch very carefully. So if i am leveraged 1:3 in one trade and the price changes 100 pips against me due to unexpected bad news, I am down about 3%, which is OK if it doesn't happen often. If on the other hand, I have 50 pip stops and they get triggered often, I loose about 1.5% regularly. Even 200 pip stops can be triggered just like today with NZD/USD. If you don't have a stop during these spikes, you are better off than the traders who do have stops. Maybe I am missing something else in my analysis? The key here is that leverage is low, such that even catastrophic news does not lead to bankruptcy.

the broker I use can set up your account with any lot sizes divisible by 10: 10K, 20K or 210K. You have to fill out a request form if you need to change your lot size from the default of 100K. As for margin, if you have a lot size small enough you can vary your margin yourself by increasing or decreasing the number of lots in your trades. Most brokers allow 1:100 margin for small accounts. So if you have 10K cash in your account, and your lot size is 10K you can use any margin from 1:1 to 1:100, depending on whether you trade one lot or one hundred lots. I personally would never use full available margin, i prefer small persistent gains and peace of mind.

spen - nothing wrong with mental stops as long as you are very disciplined in executing them like you say. having said that, you run the risk of giving yourself a really bad fill if some unexpected news comes out or you computer goes down , etc. why not just leave the orders with the broker unless you are trading large size, in which case you may have some legitimate concerns about the broker running your stops?

Arlington Spen 20:57 GMT August 25, 2004 Reply

thanks ML. What is the maximum leverage that you allow yourself to use with mental stops? I start feeling quite uncomfortable if any one trade exceeds my account by more than 3 to 1. But I can enter four trades for a total leverage of about 1:10 and sleep well at night, given that I am not overexposed to any one currency. Well aside from a regular wakeup at 4 am to check my port ;-)

A good % of us use "mental Stops", or try to disguise our stops from the dealers in various ways. You don't want your stops where everyone else has theirs.

Basically if I have a buy sig in progress, I'll hold a long trade until I get a sell sig. If I enter at decent levels that leaves me with 40-70 pip losses on losers usually.

I am trading with censored forex, they have rather tight spreads on all major pairs and crosses. I watch a multitude of charts from censored that I have saved in about 8 workspaces for strong reversal signals in bar patterns. I tried using stops with high leverage at first, but then as I watched wild spikes happen over and over for no reason, i decided to lower my leverage below 1:3 per trade and stop using automatic stops at all. I am trying to use "mental stops" only. But mind you, one needs iron-clad discipline with mental stops. If you decide to marry a trade for some reason, you can loose a chunk of money in no time. I am just curious if somebody else out there uses mental stops only in short term trading (hours and days). I don't have many years of experience.

In my trading I found that if I use leverage of no more than 1 to 3 per trade and always close manually after a predetermined amount of periods or a given amount of pips lost, or deterioration of the technical picture, I don't really need stops. I play several trades simultaneously and watch my standing against the dollar, i.e. try to not be exposed to the dollar too much in all my positions combined. I seem to have modest but persistent gains. The timeframes that I use are from 2-hour charts to daily charts. Do you think this can work long term?

Boring deay today.............I guess I can't complain though after the last few days.

It shouldn't last long though. there's a maybe 25% chance that we're already bottoming in the cycle low I'd expected for Friday or Monday, but more likely it's a pause to tip our hats at major trendline dupport before a final move lower over next couple of days.

I'll take some profit there and then wait to re-add the shorts on the bounce up from that low.

It is a BIG difference between playing a demo or real money.
To be afraid to loose make you to make mistakes, to be sorry for not entering a position make you to make mistakes...
If your account is in danger right now IMHO is to wait for a promising entry level or to move in when the market have chose a direction. We have seen many time the same pattern.
For example: One day when most of the player thinking that the USD will fall Cable loss steam and drop some 180 pips (Aug 16) but it took 2 day until EUR begin really to drop (Aug18) -EUR come back again for a day but after than drop faster- it took another few days until AUD begin to drop (Aug 22) for the moment only CAD is stubborn and only 75 pips over the last low. This give some trade opportunities like: This night you could bought EUR/CAD at 1.5735 (and sell today at 1.5860) or AUD/CAD from 0.9180 to 0.9260 or GBP/CAD from 2.3375 to 2.3575... Few days ago we got an other possibility in crosses: short EUR/GBP at 0.6785 (as beginner I would not touch GBP/JPY, EUR/AUD, AUD/JPY... too hot!) All this is short term trading use a S/L, trail the winning position but do not hold the positions.
Right now this Dollar rise is to old IMHO to go in and to sell the Dollar is against the market for the moment. Take your time and wait for new opportunities. GT & GL

imho short term trading must be left to the very experienced technical speculators. For those conservatives or (slow) traders, medium to long term trading is the best solution. for example you can buy (or sell) $/y now at 110.25 with 1-2% target either way! if you are lucky and you guessed the right trend! you reach your target in short period of time but in worst case you most probably will still take profit over 12 weeks time EITHER WAY! you need to be patient though!!GT

I will not get into detail with eur/usd but this is not a good time to get into a position here. If you read my comments in the past week I have been calling this eur/usd down but now we are in a cross road and a no man’s land in this currency if you did not get in the train before than I do not suggest to get in on it now. Next support is critical for the bulls if they are to maintain some control and we are still within the daily pennant. With intraday indicators unwinding I would wait for the bounce to complete before analyzing any position at all. That is of course my way of trading. Intraday and mid term indicators are definitely bearish but long term remains bullish for now. Which means it is sell on rallies mode for intraday traders for now IMHO. GL GT

Closing thoughts for the day:
The euros (in)ability to mount any kind of a rally has been pathetic. Even more so when one considers the weakness of the ex transport dg number. Price action is basically just passing time while the mov avgs play catch up to these levels. Tomorrow at or about the time when they coincide we should see a pretty weak ifo out of germany, we get an exhaustive move down to 1.2000ish where there are some longer term guys looking to sell into usd strength, from which levels I think we could see a decent bounce in the single currency unit.

Same goes for GBP/USD

USD/YEN is sitting right on that March trendline and has been relatively "quiet" the last week.

USD/CHF - any breakup in EUR/USD should be captured at the closer range level in USD/CHF short level, plus you have another trendline coming down from last November to cap

This is a notoriously volatile number and one that is difficult to forecast.
IFR"s guess is that durable goods orders rose 1.5% in July. Durable goods are up 4.2% so far this year after a 10.7% rise in 2003. Transportation orders, namely aircraft orders, should have supported durable goods orders again in
July. Boeing booked 75 orders in July, up from 14 in June. 20 aircrafts were delivered, up from 14 in June. This may be behind the high estimate of 7.2% in IFR"s weekly survey

GA TJ 11:21 GMT August 25, 2004 Reply
A little help for a Non-Fundamentalist. If the number does come out in the 7 range I would expect an instant spike based on the headline. But if Boeing is the sole reason for the high number wouldn’t that spike be reversed “After Analyst Studied The Details” ?

Think I will just stick with my charts.

With current real inflation in Europ ECB should raise EURO interest rates with at least ONE PERCENT in order to keep a little bit of credibility. Citi call for +7% in durable goods may have two reasons:

(1) reality and good research

(2) looking for explanation for their customers that went long USD in case that data will be negative

in case that (1) is right than USD & JPY will rally today, if (2) is the case than you can wait for big drop in USD and JPY later today.

imo, current JPY drop against EUR and GBP may may recover with addtional 50pips if US data is anything above 5%

Well the thing is , it seems there is LESS effect on markets than there used to be regarding the effect of terror events or warlike actvities. If you remember during the initial IRAQ conflict, it seemed FX was twitching with every bit of news. From a humanitarian aspect tho that is NOT good. We have becaome in many ways hardened to people's suffering UNLESS of course it DIRECTLY involves ourselves!!!

By the way congrats to the IRAQI soccer team. They played phenominal and became a crowd favorite. I know they were mine!! They are still in contention for the BRONZE metal and that is INCREDIBLE with the hardships they have had to endure are unthinkable.

Toronto-Dominion Bank and Banknorth of Maine are in advanced discussions to strike a deal worth more than $2.2bn that would mark the Canadian bank's first foray into US branch banking.

Negotiations could end with an agreement in the next few days, people close to the talks said on Tuesday. A deal would involve TD Bank taking control of Banknorth through the acquisition of a roughly 50 per cent stake in the US company for a combination of cash and stock. Banknorth has a market capitalisation of $5.45bn.

Thailand raises rates 25 bps sighting inflationary pressures. One of the triggers that will end usd support against asian currencies is inflation in the domestic asian economies. With defaltionary pressures swinging the other direction towards inflationary pressures, central banks will move to tighten, and should certainly reduce the necessity to intervene. Big picture this is yen positive (usd negative).

"Ugly moves that make little sense remind me more of late night, early 20s drinking than anything else. The point is ... it's important to have made money early in the year to be able to weather this storm," he said.

Key release for Australia this week is Q2 Private New Capital Spending Data. Due Thursday, mkt consensus is calling for a solid rebound in private new CAPEX of +4% over the June qtr after Q1's -2.5% fall. Expected to be led by increased investment in the mining and energy sectors, a Capex outcome in line with forecasts will bolster views that local economic growth remains strong, and that RBA has probably not finished lifting rates for this current cycle. Equipment plant and machinery CAPEX is one of key components for GDP, and risks to surprise on the upside given the strength in capital goods imports for Q2 (+12.2% sa), which in turn places upside risks for the overall CAPEX forecast. Data due Thurs 1.30GMT

10-4... whatever trading strategy you use to enter/exit market; don't forget about money management (just me... but i believe this is VERY VERY important). for example you traded with a 1:1 risk/reward. with that, for every trade you lose you must win more times to make a profit. in other words... winning 50% of all your trades you will still be breaking even. with a >2:1 risk/reward you can lose more than 50% of your trades and still make profits.

GBP-USd stopped dead on a daily channel bottom I have, and its EMA200, with the daily stochastic pairs I use at a pretty good level to turn up on, could be worth a risk of buying this dip for a bounce. But it appears there is more room on the downside still in the RSI and MACD, so I'd take the profit and resell higher myself.

A good target now is 1.7500, which is the rising channel top cable broke out of late last fall (when it was at 1.7000). That could be a solid area to try a long position for those of us that don't see a real reason to be accumulating U$D for the long term right now.

I believe the next support T/L should hold for now but you never know in these summer thin markets. I keep putting up numbers but the bulls keep bleeding it is still sell on rallies mode. Next support must hold for now or we will see a good drop from here. Intraday indicators continue to drill on the bottom of my chart but relieve must be on the way soon. Mid term indicators have completely turned bearish by now and long term indicators are following at this moment as well. This is setting up to be good bears market for eur/usd in September IMHO.
