"Next Tuesday, the Federal Reserve's Open Market Committee meets once again"

No. As you can see at the Fed's own site (http://www.federalreserve.gov/FOMC/), the next FOMC meeting is scheduled for November 10.

"Nobody expects Greenspan, Bernanke and Company to change the official federal funds target rate from its meager level of one percent."

As of today, it's at 1.75%.

"following this morning's release of still-lethargic employment numbers"

The US Department of Labor's latest employment numbers (August's) were released on September 3. The next release is scheduled for October 8. See http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm

"futures markets have started backing off their bets that the Fed would finally begin raising short-term interest rates by next Spring."

Today's rate hike was the third for this year...

"for one and there is NO meeting in Novemeber."

Yes there is.

In case you still haven't figured it out, you are reading a report from last year. Hate to break it to you, but it's 2004. Even in Oslo.

Predictions Aussie dollar could again reach 80 US cents
The World Today
Reporter: Stephen Long

ELEANOR HALL: There are predictions today that the Australian dollar could top the 80 US cent mark again. That's more than 10 cents above the current level of the currency.

The forecast comes from a United States economist of global renown, as our Finance Correspondent, Stephen Long, reports.

STEPHEN LONG: In the world of economic commentary, Donald Straszheim is a big kahuna. He was chief economist for the global financial house Merrill Lynch for 12 years, and his perspectives are sought out by governments and corporations worldwide.

Speaking at a Securities Institute function in Sydney today, Donald Straszheim made this bold prediction about the direction of the Aussie dollar.

DONALD STRASZHEIM: I would think appreciation of maybe three to five per cent a year for the next couple of years is a reasonable estimate for the A-dollar to rise.

STEPHEN LONG: That would put the Aussie in the high 70s.

But does the economic oracle think it will top the 80 US cent barrier for any length of time?

DONALD STRASZHEIM: Indeed I would. In fact I think over the next several years you'll see the A-dollar continuing to appreciate. It'll be jagged, uneven, but continue to appreciate against the US-dollar.

STEPHEN LONG: That's because China is driving a huge demand for commodities, so Australia's economy, long derided as a "global quarry" too reliant on mining and resources, is set to cash in.

DONALD STRASZHEIM: Australia's economy is going to be driven, I think, greatly by the strength in commodities, and unless there is a global economic downturn, there are few economies in the world that could be identified which are in a better relative position than Australia.

STEPHEN LONG: Also, the huge budget deficit and current account deficit in America will continue driving down the greenback.

DONALD STRASZHEIM: America's currency still is in this downtrend. That should lift the A-dollar.

STEPHEN LONG: When the Aussie hit 80 US cents earlier this year it caused howls of protest from exporters.

But Donald Straisheim says that pain will be offset by the huge market opportunities opening up in China. And for the world's corporate giants, he says China represents threat and opportunity.

DONALD STRASZHEIM: The striking thing to me about China, and I just came down last night from China, is that domestic Chinese companies are beginning to get their feet on the ground and are becoming increasingly effective competitors against those global brand names that we all know so well – the Dells and McDonalds, or Coca Cola, or whoever it happens to be.

The foreign companies that really make money in China will be those that team up with other private sector domestic companies in China – those companies in China that are not burdened with controls and influence pressures from Beijing.

ELEANOR HALL: US economist, Donald Straszheim. Our Finance Correspondent Stephen Long reporting.

well how can you say i am wrong when it is not there yet, is it? doesn't matter if u live in usa or not, until it happens u can't be so sure about it...let's just wait and see the economic development after this rate hike

The Fed, barring an economic collapse, is going to raise rates again in November (the FOMC meeting is after the election) - the Fed still sees the current level as accomodative - it is not addressing inflation yet // the election results may be a factor in considering a hike in December but the Fed is usually dormant in that meeting (even in Dec 2000 before the surprise 1/2 poit cut in Jan 2001)

EUR has rallied following Fed hikes in June and Aug but the August peak was lower than July - today just before the FOMC the EUR was about the same level as the close on June 30 and Aug 10 // Cable has not fared as well as EUR but the big winner since the Fed move in June is CAD

i dont think so mate, with election around the same time, it would not be a good timing to raise another rate, watch the language of the Fed too, they downplayed the inflation worries so it is now an assessment time to see how the economy performs first

Jakarta r4v3n,

I heard abt PBOC would act as soon as this weekend to raise its interest rate. It beacause boom in their money supply which 7 times than thier estimated last 2 years ago. Also inflation measure that usually their tandem for econo-monetary policies. I think the time when FED hiked 25bp Fed Funds rate this time, it could be a trigger to PBOC to raise their interest rate soon. Also for the Japanese economic came worsen for time being as ex Mr. Yen -sakakibara- said that Japanese Authority must be aware for the next recession. It would be a nice timing for safe Renmimbi now rather than lately. Also they would keep Hangseng mkt holds up for this fiscal year that would end 30 Sept.

Expectations of stronger economic growth, and the
inability of Aussie yields to match the fall in comparable US yields, all support AUD. Prices rose to a session high at 7037 after buying from model accounts added to the already positive tone leant to the currency from real money accounts overnight. A large Asian account was buying between 7010/20, so the pullback has been limited. Following the FOMC's 25 bps rate hike Aussie rallied to 7039 making a fresh high IFR.

They have yet to deal with inflation concerns and truly hope that by the time policy ceases to be accomodative that inflation will not need to be addressed - note that today they did decide that the "transitory" nature of the energy prices is a thing of the past

Tough day at the office for the $ as the top T/L and exotic barriers were taken out today. The 1.2350 barrier and 50% retracement from the 2-16-04 to 5-10-04 move held the bulls in check for now with more barriers awaiting at 1.2400, 2500, 2520,2545 and 2550 for now. Looks like the 1.2350 barrier will hold for now with the 1hr chart indicators deep in O/B area and the 4hr chart indicators also in O/B area but no sell signal in my system yet. The bears were not successful in taking out the Mother T/L (1.2100-20) giving way for a strong move by the bulls (which the market was hinting earlier) and turning the mid term out look to bullish now with long term still bullish. Support is found now at 1.2300-10, 1.2260-70 and 1.2200-20 for now IMHO. GL GT

Fed Signals Inflation Peak Behind Us
The biggest change in the FOMC's statement relates to inflation. Fed saying that even with higher energy prices, inflation and inflation expectations have eased, an acknowledgement that the core CPI has "surprised to the lowside for three consecutive months, and may suggest that the Fed believes the peak in inflation may be behind us. Therefore, the cycle-peak in Fed funds could also be unusually low

As the reality of a Fed Funds rate soon above both the ECB and BoC starts to enter the market the analysts will start to focus on "how high is up" - G'span still beating that productivity horse (like Monty Python's parrot) // action today looks like a spike that will be unwound into Friday - question is which currency fades first -- CAD, CHF, GBP, EUR and AUD seems a good line -

Comments re Radan. We're all free to follow recommondations or not. Sometimes a recommendation is right, sometimes it's wrong. I traded against Radan on this on, but have always appreciated his views. Worst thing is it critisize someone for making a recommondation - unless they're blatantly ramping - as the forum would be a poorer place without them.

I know a guy bought EUR/USD @ 1.2880 and still waiting to take profits @ 1.3130...never closing a losing position policy.
no reason to worry about him, he goes all the way with a position and do not flip...meanwhile he makes money with other positions.

the margin (now loss) he use for the EUR 1.5M could blow most of traders accounts.

also 3 white soldiers pattern in hourly chart in yen couldnt work so far may be coz of $ bear intraday trend

Newcomers to FX: news'/event days like today's Fed-ologue are historically whipsaw, often up-down 100-200 pips in minutes or 1-2 hours, completely unpredictable, eaters of $top$. Even experienced traders get clipped who play on news days in which smart traders sit on their hands or play with their demo platforms no one is suposed to know they STILL have, (!) or bet small for at least a tingle of adrenalin. ;^)

Countering my post below somewhat, higher int rates don't necessarily mean higher loan rates..in fact now US banks are sucking mud from the lake bottom trying to compete with lower and lower "to the consumer" rates to keep their loan departments alive (life blood of a small home town bank or S&L) and giving "extras" and incentives so their clients actually borrow MORE than their prospective house costs. Bad (loco) for the US banking industry, therefore bad for longrun USD stability. US credit is like a huge bubble drifting into a Mojave cactus patch.

While i have not been on here that long some of the "oldies" / more experienced traders only degrade/distain posters. HTH does that help anybody.

1 yr. €/$ chart from May '03 to present indicates a gradual cyclic support uptrend; viewing older charts indicates to me a major trend change near year end. Expect 1.2000-1.2050 again then another rise to 1.24. Range diminished since 5-03 as a consolidation period; usually indicates major trend change if charting is of any value (which I think it is).

GOLD Facing Res. at 411 if that gives way good chances to be soon around 422.

And about making money in the exchanges, for those who did not read yet... you may read the followings:

"In 1983 Barrick Gold Corp. was a start-up
company with a single mine in Canada and a
founder with no experience in the gold business.
By 2001 Barrick had amassed off-balance-sheet
assets that were worth more than the market
capitalization of the next five biggest gold-
mining companies in the world combined.
Barrick made $2.3 billion on its short sales
of gold and made a profit on those short sales
for 62 consecutive quarters. A short sale is
inherently a high-risk speculation. How many
true speculations have ever been profitable
for 62 consecutive quarters?"

Blanchard's original lawsuit charges essentially
that Morgan Chase provided Barrick with so much
borrowed gold -- presumably obtained from central
banks -- on such favorable terms that Barrick
could overwhelm the market and move prices up
or down at will and not have to repay the
borrowed gold for many years if at all. In some
years, Blanchard maintains, Barrick was able to
supply to the market more gold than was supplied
by all the bullion banks combined.

I still don't think present day picture is rosey for US econ..Checked US bond history minutes ago..downtrend...I think Fed is stupid to raise interest again...let's hope concensus is wrong and they won't. Short term if they do raise: raises value of $ but w/in range.. but if Fed says soft spot NOT over or avoids mentioning their take on it..possible downturn for $'s value even tho intr'st increases..Short term outcome of $/€ depends on unpredictable mkt hype today. Long term: more Fed interest will dent USA econ late 2004. USA's neighbor Canada has healthy retail sales. Farmacia: what's your take on today i.e. U$D plz?

[US HOUSING STARTS FOR AUGUST] rose 0.6% to a 2.000 mln pace, from a revised 1.988 mln pace (was 1.978 mln). Between the better than expected showing (gain rather than loss) in August and the upward revision to July, the housing sector is looking considerably rosier than was thought till just now. Permit issuance fell 5.5%, so starts may cool again in September (very likely, given the weather problem). Single family starts were up 4.2% to 1.667 mln (annualized), with multi-unit starts up 0.4%. Starts rose in all regions but the west, but permits fell everywhere. Again, that looks like a slowdown in September, but that is hardly bad news after today's results.

The Fed will announce its verdict at 2:15 p.m. EDT, markets convinced Fed will raise rates by 1/4% to 1.75%. "The rate hike is likely a done deal. The question is if they change anything in the statement and if the pace of rate hikes might not be as fast as priced in the interest rate curve," said Shahab Jalinoos, senior currency strategist at ABN AMRO. "If the Fed goes any further in saying that the "soft patch" is over, then we're likely to see more rises," said Rajeev Dhawan, director of Georgia State University's economic forecasting service. "But if they give any indication that the soft patch may not be over, then this could be one of the last moves this year."

CAPITAL FLOWS:
The euro showed little reaction to data released showing investments flowed out of the EZ in July, while the current account surplus narrowed. Data from the ECB showed current account surplus in the 12-nation bloc narrowed to 3.1 billion euros in July from an upwardly-revised 5.4 billion in June as portfolio investment registered a net outflow of 30.5 billion euros. Dealers said the numbers were interesting from a longer-term perspective but were having little impact in a market that is more concerned by the United States' record current account deficit. "This data does little to dispel the idea that there is little appetite for euro zone assets at the moment," said Ian Gunner, head of foreign exchange research at Mellon Bank in London.

Video footage released (Monday) shows U.S. contractor Eugene Armstrong sitting blindfolded on the floor in an orange jumpsuit, with black-clad hooded gunmen standing behind him. Armstrong rocks back and forth as a militant reads a statement. Then one of the men grabs him and saws off his head with a knife. The United States has offered $25 million for information leading to the death or capture of Zarqawi, and has launched a series of air strikes on the rebel-held city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, targeting suspected hideouts used by his followers.

£/$ good downside potential for long marcher's to SOB close to 1.8150 during the next few sessions with a risk reversal over 1.8250(where things might be changing direction yet again ,or just ranging , but eyes always open for an adversary move against existing positions , as analysis are fine as long as they are not too costy) for potential targets 1.7500 and once 1.7460 breaks 1.6899..

€$, still locked in a trading range with next confirmations located at 1.2020 and upside at 1.2360, I am still € bearish for the long term and in SOB's on each adverse move of the $ against the euro.

$/Yen Offers good potential of a sustained up move as long as 108.50 figures holds from here with a target of 1001 pip above current level entries, resistance located at 110.60 area which has to break to see a sustained and trendy upward move.

€£ Great potential here at 68+ for the next downmove towards 64 and 60 in the next few months..enjoy adverse moves and SOB at this entry levels with 6920 as risk tolerance.

AUD$, the wondrous pip rainer, as usual behaving in orderly fashion towards monthly targets at .6000 , sell points 7080/7120 , with a 'small risk' tolerance.

Some big stops were taken at the 1.2220-25 area with more stops waiting around the 1.2260-65 area. There is also a large option (1.2250) expiring today at the NY cut which could hold the bulls progress for now. Some exotic options are also awaiting around the 1.2300 area (IFR). GL GT

Chairman Alan Greenspan calls the higher oil prices a ``tax'' that may suppress growth without spreading to other goods and services. That argues for a possible pause, said economists. A counterpoint raised last week by Fed Governor Edward Gramlich said it may be better to err on the side of raising rates, even if it costs jobs, because higher inflation always follows a sustained jump in oil prices.

on he other hand :

European Central Bank council members Otmar Issing and Axel Weber said they expect inflation to slow below the bank's 2 percent ceiling and that the euro-region's economic recovery is on track.

Last post RE: this subject. Neural Based systems are VERY complex and not only have to be extensively backtested but also need some test time with live feeds. Most are NOT accurate enough to produce consistently good results. I am unsure what category THIS particular system falls under but it would be foolish to test it with real money at this time END OF STORY. it does appear intially to work better with crosses so that's the reason for chf/jpy and THAT's the only pair I am testing presently using this system.

WHATEVER...once again useful post YIPPEE. It's no wonder some of our BEST posters no longer post. Who needs this aggravation???

VloridA VV 01:52 GMT September 21, 2004 Reply
Well why, you touch the thing which apperantly would throw you into the loss?
Play what you are comfortable with.
My favorites are Gbp/Usd, UsdCad and Usd/Jpy. Sometimes Usd/Chf also. Because from my poin of view those are the most tech obiding pairs. Will never touch Eur/Aud and other wild croses.
I want to make some profit, but I'm not a gambler. .... Well maybe sometimes when I am - in Reno. But not in Forex.

It would of been SSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier, if you simply had not posted. Play with you demo account quietly...

VV, I was very specific I am playing demo ONLY on this chf/jpy. I emphasize this because If this system is off it will lose money consistently. I don't want anyone to lose money on these possies INCLUDING me!!!

Hey Hey Hey =:O I thought there is a real guru named Dallas GEP. But it appears that he is still playing demo ??

I quit that 3 years ago, You get wrong understanding of the (market - your money) relationship if you're playing demo. You don't get the juice of the game if you dont lose - win real money.

I'm really dissapointed Dallas GEP. Sorry for you
;((

Dallas GEP 01:16 GMT September 21, 2004 Reply
Warning, I will be trying some chf/jpy possies tonight and since I will trying to tweak a new system...I definitely WOULD NOT take thses possies with me because more than likely these possies will lose money and I am taking these specific possies on a demo account only until the system either proves or disproves itself.

Dallas GEP 01:10 GMT September 21, 2004 Reply
Well looking for nice levels for possies. One had already been mentioned that being eur/gbp short around .6845. USD/CHF around 1.2745/50 SHORT would be decent. AUD/USD short around .7030 decent as well. 110.30 short on usd/jpy not bad.

Hope you are doing well. Life can be simple but not easy to understand, sometimes we shut our eyes to the truth in favor of the lies and if you believe the lies long enough you begin to think that is the truth. I read a book once that said wars and diseases are needed. It is a way for Mother Nature to control balance in this earth. Some people may disagree and others might agree. Philosophy as I see it is like politics and religion sometimes it is very hard to understand and explain. The bears have failed again in taking the Mother T/L and that will put the pressure on the bulls to take the top T/L at this time. We will probably be in the range (1.2100-20 1.2300-20) for eur/usd as the market jockeys for position ahead of the decision and comments later on the week for the $ IMHO. GL GT

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. In addition, there is a forex brokers directory where you can compare forex brokers. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs. Interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading.

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Forex Brokers

The forex database can be used to access high, low, close daily forex ranges for key currency pairs, such as the EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, GBPUSD, USDCAD, AUD, NZD and major crosses, including EURJPY, EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPJPY, GBPCHF and CHFJPY. Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs. You can look on the forex forum for updates when one of the fx trading tools is updated.

This forex blog includes the Daily Forex View, Market Chatter and technical forex blog updates.
