DJ Australia Dec Performance Construction -1.1 Pts Vs Nov
Reply
Australia's construction sector contracted further in December, underscoring the woes building firms face as global growth continues to slide, a performance gauge produced by an industry group published Thursday shows. The Australian Industry Group-Housing Industry Association Performance of Construction Index fell 1.1 points in December from November to 30.9 points, its 10th consecutive fall. A reading below 50 points separates contraction from expansion.
The engineering sub index fell 12.1 points to 26.1 points, its weakest reading since September 2005. Commercial construction recorded its eighth decline in 10 months, falling by 18.4 points to 27.5 points.

Geezus Syd 22:17, why do u whine / nostalgize about some tradition going poof ? Bancruptcy IS markets efficient way of dealing with out-of-fashion bellbottoms: purge the non-viable parts, keep the viable one and change ownership / management.

Besides, maybe some of the old traditional "stuff" will gain in value .You know: supply vs demand thingie. hint hint

Limited Reaction to Dreadful ADP, Harbinger of Payrolls?
The US dollar has shown little reaction to the much worse than expected ADP Dec jobs report and that may be a harbinger of things to come on Friday when US payrolls are due. Today’s ADP data fell 693K (495K drop was expected) with the Nov data already revised down to -472K from -250K reflecting a shift in methodology by ADP. While the new adjustments in the calculation of ADP data make it difficult to know how closely ADP will track payroll data, other releases have also pointed to a sharp deterioration in employment in Dec. Today’s Challenger job cuts jumped 274.5% y/y in Dec, the largest reading since 2001, while the Dec services PMI releases point to another month in which payrolls fall by at least 500K. The question, however, is not the magnitude of Friday’s data – it is hardly surprising that jobs data are horrific. The question is whether the FX market responds to the jobs numbers or shifts attention to new event risks including next week’s ECB meeting. Today’s lackluster response to the worse than expected data suggests the market reaction Friday could be limited.

Dollar To Strengthen In Venezuela In 1Q As Devaluation Looms
Reply
Venezuela's "Strong Bolivar," as the local currency is officially called, looks poised to weaken sharply before too long. Collapsed oil prices and relatively little savings are likely to topple both the local currency and the nation's broader economy. Falling oil prices are likely to force the government to devalue its currency peg, but no one that to happen before a referendum to lift presidential terms limits. President Hugo Chavez wants the vote to take place as soon as next month, though doubts abound that it can be organized sooner than sometime in March. The bolivar has been pegged to the dollar for four years, with only minimal revisions. The peg looked far more sustainable when oil prices were roughly $100 higher per barrel last July than they are today. Now the bolivar is looking hugely overvalued. DJ

Following the arguments forwarded by the rating agencies during the subprime meltdown, ie " the computer did it!" the plan from the lawyers is to blame the computer programs and to say that jerome Kerviel did not press the F9 key to refresh it.

What I am saying it is irresponsible to post a trade idea without posting a stop. You can do what you want with your paper trades but if you are posting to give real traders an idea for a trade, then keep it in your drawer if you do not provide a stop. Even if turns out right it is irresponsible to expose one's capital by trading without a stop. The term "sure call" does not exist in the real trading world.

Jan. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Satyam Computer Services Ltd. Chairman Ramalinga Raju resigned after saying he falsified earnings and assets, prompting a collapse in the stock of India’s fourth- largest software-services provider.

Raju unsuccessfully tried to sell two companies to Satyam last month in a final attempt to plug 50.4 billion rupees ($1.03 billion) of “fictitious” cash on the company’s balance sheet, he wrote in a letter to Hyderabad-based Satyam’s board today. Profits have been inflated for “several years,” he said.

Satyam, which means “truth” in Sanskrit, plunged in New York trading, after earlier dragging down India’s benchmark index, in a scandal described as “horrifying” by markets regulator C.B. Bhave. Raju’s reign unraveled in the past month as a shareholder revolt blocked the asset purchases, the World Bank banned Satyam from bidding for contracts and four directors quit.

Obama: watch for trillion dollar deficits
Posted Jan 7th 2009 4:42AM by Douglas McIntyre
Filed under: Economic data, Financial Crisis

President-elect Obama is telling the public that the US may run a trillion dollar deficit to bailout the economy. According to The New York Times, he made the point that Americans for the unparalleled prospect of "trillion-dollar deficits for years to come," a stark assessment of the budgetary outlook that he said would force his administration to impose tighter fiscal discipline on the government.

After absorbing the shock of how large the number is, most people ask where the money will come from. Almost everyone already knows the answer. It will be passed on to taxpayers, probably in a few years when the economy recovers.

Icy weather grips Europe, disrupts transport

At least a dozen people have died in a record-breaking cold snap that has Europe in its grip, with heavy snow disrupting air and road traffic. The mercury dropped to minus 31 Celsius in central Romania, where two people died of cold on Sunday. In Poland 10 people have died since Friday. Snow covered parts of Belgium and northern and central Italy, as well as much of Germany, where temperatures dropped to minus 26C in some parts. Train travellers in Germany faced lengthy delays and air traffic at many European airports was disrupted. The wintry weather coincided with sharp falls in gas deliveries from Russia via Ukraine, as Kiev and Moscow remain locked in a payment dispute.

The market can go up to 1.3629 or go down to 1.3261 before the London session. The daily cycle analysis should give be a better idea which way it would like to go. UK Dec take-home pay growth weakest since Jan 2008
Reply
LONDON, Jan 7 (Reuters) - Annual growth in British take-home pay fell to its lowest level in almost a year in December, sinking to 2.9 percent from 3.5 percent in November, data from payments company VocaLink showed on Wednesday.
A slump in Christmas bonus payments in Britain's dominant services sector drove much of the slowdown in pay growth, which was 3.4 percent in December last year. A separate survey of purchasing managers on Monday showed that the service sector continued to contract in December at almost the same record pace as the month before. The falling rate of wage growth -- which VocaLink said was now below the rate of retail price inflation for two years running -- is likely to further banish price stability worries when the Bank of England starts a two-day interest rate meeting later on Wednesday. Economists polled by Reuters expect the Bank of England to cut rates by at least half a percentage point to 1.5 percent on Thursday.
