DJ Time To Get Bearish On EUR - Bank Of NZ
Reply
It's time to start getting "quite bearish" on EUR/USD, as reluctance of ECB to cut rates, piecemeal approaches to fiscal stimulus and still terrible data "has to be bad news for the economy for the economy had currency," says Bank of New Zealand strategist Danica Hampton. Says on a purchasing power parity level, EUR also overvalued. Says further downside to go. Notes early softness after short squeeze higher, says if pair breaks convincingly 1.2800-1.2820 range, then could test 1.2750. But long way from lows of 1.2550 in October. More likely pair will consolidate. Last 1.2829.

Perhaps it has already started...

*Sarkozy has been reported to have told a leading industrialist not to "fire anyone in France."
*Banks seems to favor domestic over foreign borrowers as a means of reducing risk.
*Specific countries are increasingly becoming protective of their automotive and financial sectors.

Mrs Watanabe Turns Her Back On Foreign Bonds
Reply
Japanese retail investors have gone off foreign investments - and it's hurting currencies and government debt of New Zealand and Australia. These two nations were among the biggest beneficiaries of Japan's ultra-low interest rates, which sent Japanese investors abroad to garner higher yields. That flow of money provided handy funding for Australia and New Zealand and bolstered growth there, while lifting the value of the local currencies. But slowing global growth and falling commodity prices are damping demand for local exports. As leading economies from the U.S. to Europe are gripped with financial and economic problems, investors have cut their exposure to risk across the board. Japanese investors are no different: they are unwinding holdings in Australia and New Zealand and returning to home base. Steep rates cuts from the two nations' central banks are adding to the outflows because that further reduces the yield advantages over Japan, hurting the value of the Australian and New Zealand dollar. Rising currency volatility amid uncertainty about growth has also turned investors away.
"Risk-adjusted returns collapsed," said Richard Franulovich, a senior currency strategist at Westpac Banking Corp. in New York. Franulovich noted that the two-year yield spread between New Zealand and Japan, for example, has shrunk to 2 points from 6 points just several months ago. It could narrow further to 1 point over the next few months, he said. Japanese retail demand for foreign assets has fallen rapidly in recent weeks, and more declines are in the cards as the nation's fiscal year end, March 31, approaches. It is a time when repatriation of money to Japan kicks into high gear.
In December, $7.5 billion in Toshin launches had been planned, but only $580 million was subscribed. The average subscription ratio - a gauge of demand - was about 8% of plan. "Japanese investors have been burnt by foreign currencies," said Stuart Thomson, a fund manager at Resolution Investment Management Ltd. in Glasgow, Scotland, who doesn't hold any Australian and New Zealand government debt at the moment due to the negative fundamental outlook.
RBC's Trinh said the New Zealand dollar is "most vulnerable" to dwindling appetite from offshore investors, with NZ$15 billion ($7.49 billion) in uridashi/eurokiwi bonds coming due this year. Uridashi securities are foreign currency-denominated debt sold to individuals in Japan, while eurokiwi are bonds denominated in New Zealand dollars and sold outside of the country.
"We anticipate the largest net negative issuance in history," said Trinh. "We can no longer rule out a move to all-time lows at 0.3998" in coming months, referring to the value of the New Zealand dollar against the greenback .

Just think of your trading as making love.
-Plan your entry strategy
-then don’t rush it as it could end up in a messy loss,
-and once you’re in, if all’s going well don’t rush to get out again.

Good morning , Evening to all.

Hopefully 2009's will be a good year for everyone (though that's quite cynical..As we are competing against each others) , being a BULL(Chinese horoscope) , i m ready for a massive year..

The higher the crisis, the bigger vols , and the better performance...(To everyone but retails)...

It seems that many brokers will now stop Islamic accounts, due to the big hit they have taken recently (Just let clients do their shorts , and go long , getting rolls...Without hedging == hard time for some brokers).

We aren't here to name any brokers but i would be on hedge if you start seeing your broker stopping Islamic accounts (Would mean they are having a hard time...).

I wouldn't be surprised to see more Re-fco type situations in the next few months.

That said,

Have a great day!

-Oil Man.

Zimbabwe Central Bank Removes 12 Zeroes From Currency (Update1)
Email - Print - A A A

By Brian Latham

Feb. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Zimbabwe, which has the world’s highest inflation rate, slashed 12 zeroes off its currency and announced measures to make trade in foreign exchange more transparent, Gideon Gono, the central bank governor, said.

The central bank revalued the currency at a rate of 1 trillion Zimbabwe dollars for one, Gono said in a statement on the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s Web site today. The central bank also lifted all restrictions on foreign currency cash withdrawals.

All foreign-exchange trade will be brought “into the visible formal market,” Gono said.

Zimbabwe’s has been gripped by economic recession for the past decade and has an inflation rate that was last estimated at 231 million percent in July 2008. At least 6.9 million people, more than half the population, need emergency food aid, according to the United Nations, while the country’s health, sewage and water systems have collapsed, exacerbating a cholera outbreak that has killed 3,229 people.

Last month, Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa allowed Zimbabweans to use foreign currencies for all business, including trading shares on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange. The bourse has been closed since Nov. 21, after the central bank accused some traders of using fraudulent checks to buy shares.

The central bank will require all businesses to apply for foreign-exchange licenses, Gono said. The permits will cost between $12,000 for urban-based businesses and $10 for small- scale vendors.

Tobacco farmers in the country will be allowed to retain 100 percent of their foreign-currency earnings, Gono said. In addition, platinum and diamond-mining companies will be required to open foreign-exchange accounts with Zimbabwean banks “to ensure that Zimbabwe’s extractive industries fully benefit the local economy.”

Europe's Growing Crisis Puts the Fed at Risk
By Jack Willoughby

TO AID THEIR AILING COMMERCIAL banks, central banks in Europe have relied on huge currency swaps, borrowing nearly $400 billion from the U.S. Federal Reserve. But as European commercial banks and European currencies deteriorate, repaying all that money to the Fed is becoming ever more difficult.

"[Fed Chairman Ben] Bernanke's assurances aside, I don't see how they can easily be repaid," warns Gerald O'Driscoll, senior fellow with the Cato Institute and formerly with Citigroup and the Dallas Fed.

Euro Continues To Fall On Credit Rating Concerns
Reply
The euro continued to fall in Tokyo Monday along with the British pound after Moody's Investors Service downgraded the long-term credit rating of major U.K. bank Barclays Bank PLC.
This again raised the specter of further European bank and sovereign downgrades, spooking speculators to sell euros and pounds on fears that investors may cash in assets denominated in those currencies amid growing jitters over the European credit market, dealers said.
Following Standard & Poor's downgrading of the long-term credit ratings of Greece, Spain and Portugal in January, and threat of doing the same for Ireland, the Barclays news "renews concerns that Ireland may be downgraded," said Yuzo Sakai, FX manager at Tokyo Forex & Ueda Harlow. As such worries grow, currency pairs like euro-yen "will have a hard time bouncing back," said Sakai.

RBA Set To Cut Rates Deeply On Budget News -ANZ
Reply
Australian Treasurer Wayne Swan's Monday announcement of likely size of the budget deficit in coming years due to projected slump in tax revenues is alarming and indicates Treasury will sharply downgrade growth forecasts when Parliament resumes this week, says Warren Hogan, head of Australian economics at ANZ. Adds, projected budget revenue projection shortfall shock of A$115 billion unfolding over next four years highlights severity of Australia's economic situation right now, makes another large rate cut all but a done deal Tuesday. Says if degree of deterioration in government's fiscal position is as large as suspected, may spur concerns government's fiscal stimulus over years ahead will be constrained, putting more pressure on RBA to cut harder and faster

Short-Term AUD/USD Support Likely At 0.6280-RBC
Reply
Short-term AUD/USD support likely around 0.6280 as risk-aversion hangs over FX markets, bad data streams thicken, RBC Capital Markets senior currency strategist Sue Trinh says. Notes lots of selling out of Tokyo. Also, "the market's getting pretty nervous about the RBA tomorrow." RBC expects 100bp cut tomorrow but risks for bigger cut loom large after weak domestic housing data today. Break below 0.6000 also on horizon though pace of deterioration not as bad as last October. Some marked support likely around October low of 0.6003; RBA will see little reason to intervene if rate of descent is orderly. Expects pair to hit 0.55 by mid-2009, though growing prospect chance this target could be closer to 0.52-0.53. AUD/USD now 0.6318

NZD/JPY Falls To Lowest Since Nov 2000
Reply
NZD/JPY hits 45.08 on EBS, its lowest since Nov 30, 2000, as Asian speculators back from Lunar New Year holiday respond to RBNZ's greater-than-expected 150bp rate cut to 3.5% last Thursday by selling pair; also dragged down by Japan investors wary of weaker share prices this week, selling NZD-based investments to cover increasingly difficult cash flows in Japan, says senior FX manager at major Japan brokerage. "After falling through 50 earlier in January, the kiwi may test 40 in the near term." Adds weak NZD/JPY "also part of broader weaker cross yen pairs," with EUR/JPY, GBP/JPY also down on rising risk aversion.

Orderly decline??? Maybe some are already accumulating for a bounce?

A 100bp interest cut is already factored, and maybe also the anti AUD black propaganda will be in soon.

Though chart-wise 0.6110 is on the way, a sufficient bounce from
0.62 can undo all the Pic.

Using previous cycles as guide, Australian government budget deficit should peak at between 2.5% to 3.0% of GDP over next couple of years, implying a deficit of around A$30 billion or more beyond 2009-2010, says ANZ Economist Katie Dean. Adds depth of impending recession for Australia may be less than early 1990's but duration could be longer. "The factors dragging growth lower - the end of the resource boom and household balance sheet adjustment - will take time to play out through the economy, dragging on growth in 2009 and 2010."

NZD/USD Could Head Below 0.4000 Coming Months-RBC
Reply
NZD/USD could move toward all-time lows of 0.3898 tapped in October, 2000 in coming months as raft of headwinds confronting Kiwi, says RBC FX strategist Sue Trinh; says with NZ$15 billion of scheduled uridash and eurokiwi redemptions this year, diminishing demand from offshore investors pose continued downside risk for NZD; notes net monthly issuance has been negative since July 2008; "going forward, we anticipate the largest net negative NZD denominated issuance in history," due to yield appeal of NZD denominated assets dwindling, plus S&P's recent downgrade to NZ's foreign currency outlook, warning of 33% chance of downgrade of greater than one notch; therefore downward impact on NZD from persistent capital outlows very strong; tips own target of 0.4300 by mid-2009 likely to be reached sooner, pair could move toward October 2000 lows in coming months.
