AUD/USD Outlook To Be Driven By Global Sentiment
Reply
Global backdrop will be key to the fortunes of the AUD/USD. While global growth expectations and risk appetite remain shaky, expect bounces in AUD/USD to be limited to the 0.8250-0.8260 region, says John Kyriakopoulos, head of FX strategy at nabCapital. Initial support is seen around the 0.8145-0.8260 region. Further weakness across global stock markets could see a deeper correction back towards 0.8090. Adds it is important to note, investors still believe the world is in recovery mode. What appears to be changing however, is investors' expectations about just how quickly this recovery will occur. dj

AUD/USD Expected Weaker As Stocks Tumble
Reply
AUD/USD likely to come under pressure with Asian equity markets expected to follow Wall Street's sharp declines overnight. One senior FX trader at an Australian investment bank said Australian shares have so far been relatively resilient, but there is a risk the market will be hit harder and "play catch up" in the session ahead. Any rallies by AUD/USD are expected to be short-lived with initial support likely at 0.8150. RBA policy meeting minutes at 0130 GMT to be watched, but RBA has been vocal of late and there is little expectation of fresh news.

DJ MARKET TALK: We're Not Talking Aug '08 Meltdown, But... CITIGROUP
Reply
"While we do not see a dynamic as aggressive as that seen in the 'meltdown' as we headed into August-November 2008, risks of at least a good correction to the recent positive risk dynamic have grown," said technical analysts at Citigroup. They note "tentative signs that a broadly firmer USD and weaker JPY crosses could be on the cards."

AUSTRALIA'S relationship with China has plunged to a decade low, with Beijing taking a series of tough measures, including cancelling high-level visits, to convey its displeasure with the Rudd government. Analysts have told The Australian the Chinese were extremely frustrated at their inability to influence the price of iron ore imports.

Ken Henry warns of second economic shockwave
TREASURY secretary Ken Henry has warned there is still the chance of a second shock that could hit the Australian economy, and it is too early to declare victory over the global economic downturn.

NZD/USD remains under pressure as risk aversion pushes U.S. stocks down, USD higher after sharp drop in China's Shanghai Composite Index. Why a sudden change in sentiment for eur, gbp vs. usd? any fundamental basis for this sustained decline since Asian session?

GBP Comes Under Sharp Selling Pressure
Reply
A nasty start for the week for the GBP as falling risk appetite as well as Rightmove's 2.2% fall in house prices in August knocked the currency sharply lower. RBC Capital Markets says July CPI data Tuesday and the BOE Minutes and August CBI Industrial trends survey Wednesday will now be the "core focus" for the GBP.
GBP/USD has broken below its March-August uptrend line, and is now expected to head considerably lower in the days to come.

Risky Assets Suffer As Stocks Slide
Reply
Risky assets are suffering Monday as stocks slide deeper into the red. The closely watch Shanghai Composite index closed down 5.8% at a 2 month low, and the main European bourses are down around 1.5% on the day. Oil has dropped almost $2 on the day to trade below $66/bbl. In the currencies GBP/USD has shed 2 cents on the day to a 3 week low of 1.6326, AUD, NZD and CAD have each lost one cent. EUR/USD trades at a near one week low of 1.4111. USD/JPY has been left on the sidelines, trading unchanged on the session at 94.50.

Australian Dollar Down Late As Risk Selloff Gathers Pace
Reply
The Australian dollar was weaker late Monday as the unwinding of gains in risk asset markets continued into the Asian session. The pullback in risk appetite in what is typically a volatile month for equities markets has supported Australian bonds futures, pushing the September three-year bond futures back above 95.00.

The New Zealand dollar returned to earth Monday with a sizable thump as risk aversion came back into play to send equities and "growth currencies" lower.
In New York trading Friday the Kiwi tipped US$0.6886, its highest since Sept. 29, but in Wellington Monday, it opened nearly one U.S. cent lower and kept falling through the session.
"It looks like risk aversion has crept back into the market and unfortunately the Kiwi has found its support base eroded," said Custom House NZ dealer Chris Hunter.
He said the rapidity with which the currency fell suggested it could be vulnerable to a further slide, depending on how equity markets behaved.
Bond prices rose, particularly long bonds, and swap rates fell, in line with offshore moves, a Wellington trader said. He said lingering paying interest in the morning was easily absorbed by receivers.
ANZ Bank economists said in a briefing note that the debt market has been taking the Reserve Bank of Australia's rate hiking theme too far.
"We believe the moves in NZ rates have gone too far, given that the RBNZ will not be hiking in January next year as implied by (Overnight Index Swap) pricing." BNZ Bank currency strategist Danica Hampton said the Kiwi could correct in coming days, possibly dropping to US$0.6600 after its strong rally over the last month. "For the coming week, with global growth expectations and risk appetite now starting to look a little shaky, NZD/USD looks vulnerable to a correction lower."

Expect AUD Selling To Dominate In Asia - Trader
Reply
Pullback in AUD/USD in early Asian session mainly continuation of moves in late Wall Street trade, not headline related with volumes fairly low, trader says. Notes fair amount of JPY buying with some Japanese bond redemptions while market looks "a bit stale long Aussie dollars". Says "it looks like the sellers will probably win out a little bit in our session" but expects buying to kick in around 0.8230 down to 0.8170.
