RBA policy meeting set to keep cash rate on hold at current 49-year-low 3.00% for 5th consecutive month. Outcome due at 0430 GMT. Statement by Governor Glenn Stevens critical if current hawkish expectations of two rate hikes by end-2009 are to be sustained. RBA rhetoric has clearly shifted toward tightenings over the last month and some economists say the central bank will clearly articulate a tightening bias. Stevens has previously warned that emergency settings of policy will need to be removed, but needs signs of a sustainable economic recovery first. A key plank of that could come Wednesday with 2Q GDP data likely to show solid growth.

Juffair KaL ,
are you playing these levels from extremes to inside of the given range..or, tou extrapolate to outside, once these levels are "broken"?
i would certainly like to see gbpusd above 1,6380/1,6430 levels going into "september slump"(maybe "slum"-not sure of corect english frase)...this movement is not a speculation nor prediction of any kind, just wishfull thinking - going into major september (global) stock pullback!

Techs - EUR/USD latest rally has stalled shy of the recent yearly highs by 1.4445 and the market appears to be in the process of once again rolling back over. A break below 1.4210 will however be required for confirmation, with an acceleration expected back towards the 1.4000 area. However, inability to take out 1.4210 will keep the pressure on the topside and not rule out the potential for a retest of the 2009 highs. It is also worth noting that the 50-Day SMA by 1.4150 continues to support the market on a medium-term basis, so a break and close below the 50-Day will also help to generate fresh sell interest. USD/JPY (See below). GBP/USD locked in some short-term bearish consolidation with the market pressing lower thus far on Monday and looking like it wants to retrace back towards psychological barriers at 1.6000 which also coincides with the 100-Day SMA and recent multi-day consolidation lows from early July. Below 1.6155 should now accelerate the drop back towards 1.5980-1.6000 over the coming sessions. Back above 1.6375 however will negate and delay bearish outlook. USD/CHF continues to chop around within a very well defined multi-week range with the price currently residing at the lower end of the range. Recent price action has been constructive however, after the latest break to fresh 2009 lows at 1.0530 in the previous week was short-lived. Look for Friday’s bullish doji close followed by Monday’s break back above 1.0615 to now spark some fresh upside with the market to likely appreciate back into the mid range and towards 1.0700. Only a close back below 1.0500 will negate and give reason for pause.

If Global GDP continues to slow for an extended time I think the demographic problem could be turned on its head. While it is true after twenty years under-performance Japans unemployment has been 5.5%. The US is almost at 10% (using the same system as Japan and Europe it would be >15%) and it has only just begun to taste a recession. IMHO all those youngsters balooning the unemployment ranks is not going to be seen as a demographic desireable over the next few years. No matter where you live the game is changing and people will be choosing to work longer and retire later. The wealth destruction of the past couple of years makes it more obvious that retiring at 55 is unsutainable if one is to live for another 30/40 years.

Why Are We Such Suckers For Prediction?
Reply
I keep CNBC on all day while I work. Perhaps I think I will miss something, or maybe it’s the background noise that’s appealing. In any event, what I always find amazing is the parade of experts making one prediction after another. I think I would fall out of my chair if I heard one of them say “Well, to tell you the truth Mark, I have no idea”.

at the moment there are Japanese (Yen) repatriations to contend with as foreign profits are brought home a la the HIA of USA in 2005. It remains to be seen how much this entails and from which directions. This possibilty has been the catalyst for Yen strength recently.

alimin intervening without thought or planning for the consequence (i.e. a build up of USD 1 trillion of reserves and $JPY that were purchased above current market rates) is one of the issues the DPJ campaigned on. They have actually said that higher intrest rates and stronger currency might actually be a good thing as they look to stimulate domestic consumption that has been negligable for the past twenty years as LDP focused on Export led "solutions".

On euro, agree FM dear. On the other hand, a close above 1.4280 could be signalling possible reversal going north.

it is interesting to see if this triggers jpy strengthening, would a case of joint intervention by SNB and BOJ be seen some time in the future?

A closely-watched private sector indicator of inflation pressure in Australia was unchanged in August compared with July.
The TD Securities-Melbourne Institute Monthly inflation gauge rose by 1.7 per cent in August from a year earlier, well below the Reserve Bank's 2-to-3 per cent target band.

The knee-jerk reaction of the market after that historic win is for the yen to strengthen. But i think it is too early. The market is still digesting the outcome.

I would still have to think though the pair isn't done yet on the downside. Willing to consider longs at 91.80's.

Hi Ron. usd/yen heavy bears dominating, no clear bottom in sight though 92.50 may provide for some bounce. 90.50 will definitely be a good buying area.
