DJ Yellen: Fed Likely To Tighten Before Unemployment Falls To 5%

Syd 20:52 - Yellen, unfortunately for Joe Sixpack, is a bit better versed than most in How the Government Measures Unemployment (BIS)

People with jobs are employed.

People who are jobless, looking for jobs, and available for work are unemployed.

People who are neither employed nor unemployed are not in the labor force.

Let's see: Joe gets fired. Joe is unemployed. Joe looks for a new job. Joe is still in the labor force.
The unemployment rate rises. # of out of work vs total # labor force.

Joe continues to look for a job. Joe's unemployment benefits run out. Joe drops off officially looking for work list and is removed from the labor force. Joe is also removed from the unemployment rolls.

The effect that Yellen is possibly anticipating is that of Joe having been listed as unemployed (greater weight in the numerator) than Joe did in the denominator. The beauty of Joe being removed from both is that unemployment rate goes down.

Which brings us back to Yellen's before 5% unemployment rate postulation. And a possible signal of when they plan to tighten.

NT: My advice is that instead of investing in medium-risk securities, you should put most of your money in very low-risk securities, and a little bit in high-risk securities. Then you might get a good black swan. Also, it's good to have more than one profession, in case your own profession goes out of style. A Wall Street trader who's also a belly dancer will do a lot better than a trader who winds up driving a taxi.

When gbp/usd price touched 1.6580 and broke it, we were in European session and the short-term charts were pointing down so shorting at that time was fine. Come US trading time, short-term charts are pointing up so selling would not be giving much of an edge. Going with the flow means, buying at 1.6570/80 earlier.

fwiw, on a weekly basis we continue to flirt around the 1.6425 level (38.2% retrace of the entire 2.1160/1.3500 fall). This level has been pivoted in all but two of the last 15 weeks. Failure to hold onto Friday's gains and the subsequent sharp drop creating the first lower low of any significance in almost 2 weeks increases the chances of another tst of the pivot level. Interestingly, the same level is a 50% retrace of the recent 1.6115/1.6740 rally.

GOLD boom '79-'80 - for whta reasons?

Given the political environment at the time -1. The Soviet Invasion 2. The Iran Hostages 3. There was the second oil shock following the Shah's overthrow and 4. Iraq invasion of Iran, not only the markets but most of the world were scared we were heading for WW 3.
Inflation zoomed following the increase in oil. Petrol was in short supply. I recall driving around Surrey trying to find a petrol station open on a weekend. None were open.
It was just a number of things and as I mentioned previously the spike lasted what ten weeks. Up from low USD 400's to USD 850 and back down again.

In late 1979 the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Gold took off in the aftermath of the invasion.
Beginning of December 1979 gold was USD 420, by mid Jan 1980 it was USD 850 then by March it was back at USD 480.
Throughout 1979 USD was weak. Carter was president and Iran hostage situation was main news.

A question to those who remember those times.
I was searching the net for info but I found only this:

1971 - On December 17 and 18, 1971, the Group of Ten, meeting in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, created the Smithsonian Agreement which devalued the dollar to $38/ounce

1973 - In February 1973 the Bretton Woods currency exchange markets closed, after a last-gasp devaluation of the dollar to $44/ounce, and reopened in March in a floating currency regime.
................
I'm curious if in the early '70 Gold was appr. $40 - then what triggered in '79 such a huge rally to $875?

I'd appreciate any link I can read on the matter.

Scalping video journals with a semiautomatic technic

Hello,

The pair has dropped during the night.I am biased that we will see 1.4700 shortly so I prefer to buy in the dips.

An opportunity formed aprox 15 min after the London open for a nice London breakout.

See the rest in the video

Thank you

Extended Comex Longs Spell Trouble For Gold -UBS
Reply
UBS says Comex commitments of traders report shows net speculative long position in gold at record high 29.02 million oz as of last Tuesday, 2.2 million oz more than previous record long position seen in February 2008. Adds, by now could be 31 million ounces. "So considering the speed of the increase and on the absolute level of the net speculative position, we are cautious about the near term outlook for the gold price." UBS says that whenever net speculative long position increased by more than 6 million oz in a week, the average decline in gold over the following four weeks was 5.1%. Spot gold at $1,002.80, down $2.30 since Friday's NY close.

NZD Down Sharply On Intl Credit Concerns -Trader

NZD/USD down sharply with AUD on concerns about European credit markets, says Wellington forex dealer. NZD/USD down to 0.7000 vs 0.6955 opening. Dealer says NZD being dragged down by very weak AUD. "Credit markets look worse in Europe. Everything has been aggressively sold off. The Kiwi is not out of line with markets." Adds Financial Times article about Beijing accusing Washington of "rampant protectionism" also souring tone for growth assets; Kiwi already had soft tone, but weaker than expected July retail sales added to pressure.

What is it about September? Before last year, the greatest event in recent British economic history was the exit from the ERM in 1992. It happened on September 16. Before that, the most momentous economic event was leaving the Gold Standard in 1931. When? You guessed it, in September – on the September 21, to be precise. And the fall of Lehman Brothers, which, although it happened in America, ushered in many major consequences here, was announced on September 15 last year. LINK

EU faces 'existential' danger from economic crisis
Reply
Mario Monti, the European Union's former Competition tsar, says abandonment of free market principles is deadly.
The global financial crisis has inflicted such damage to free market principles that it risks undermining the core function of Brussels and triggering the disintegration of the European Union, according to the EU's most revered economic figure.

"The EU faces a quasi-existential crisis," said Mario Monti, who ran the EU's market and competition directorates for a decade. LIINK
