PREVIEW: Australia's economy
Reply
PREVIEW: Australia's economy expected to churn out further 20,000 jobs in April, according to survey of 18 economists by Dow Jones Newswires. More than 200,000 jobs have already been created since late 2009. Despite robust data, unemployment set to remain steady at 5.3% in April. Continued strength in job market will ensure RBA retains hawkish policy stance. Any surprise strength in data could see markets rethink current view that RBA set to be sidelined for number of months, holding cash rate target steady at 4.50% out to around September. Data due 0130 GMT.

Aussie Jobs Expected Up 20,000 In April
Reply
Even with some disappointing recent economic reports as a backdrop, economists in Australia still think today's April jobs report will show a continued improvement in labor market. In a survey of economists by Dow Jones Newswires, economists forecast an addition of 20,000 jobs in April, with the unemployment rate holding at 5.3%.

NZ Budget May Lead Fitch To Lift Negative Outlook
Reply
Economists forecast Treasury will lift formerly "bearish" growth forecasts, helping deficit projections though may still be 2016/2017 before budget hits surplus. Infometrics economist Andrew Gawith expects good news. "If anything I would expect Fitch to take it off (negative outlook) based on the better economic outlook for New Zealand, which will have some benefits for the government's position." Adds, if so, unlikely to send markets wild but will support NZD.

(Reuters) - U.S. lawmakers must act quickly to tackle a large budget deficit if the United States wants to avoid the kind of debt crisis that hit Greece, the White House's top budget official said on Wednesday.

the preferred trigger is aussie jobs report,2nd trigger higher stox on the week added with weak jpy.i see jpy breaking higher decisively.that will have the commodity trio tagging along.

HFT see the daily chart. trend is clearly down but still above the recent 1.2510 low so technically consolidating until/unless taken out.

I posted chatter yesterday on GVI Forex about a rumored China 1.25-1.31 DNT option, which if true, suggests 1.25 could be defended. This is why 1.26 has taken on added importance as below it puts 1.25 on the radar screen. Option barrier talk is always tricky to trade on, especially when you get it through the rumor mill, but something to keep an eye on as long as 1.25+ trades.

US equities gained and treasury yields gained, but currency and commodity markets wee mixed. Also comforting was Portugal's ability to issue EUR1bn bonds.

Sovereign Credit Risk Means a Lower Path for US Rates
Fed on hold through year-end, lower path for yields: We are changing our long-standing calls for US interest rates: We now expect the Fed to keep policy on hold until early in 2011; previously we thought the Fed would begin to raise rates in September. And we see a significantly lower path for 10-year US Treasury yields through the end of 2010: We now think that 10-year yields will rise from today's 3.6% to 4.5% by year-end - that's 100bp lower than the 5.5% level we previously expected. RATE FUTURES REPORT: Market Sees Debt Worries Fade
Reply
-Traders of U.S. interest rate futures were more confident Wednesday that Europe is getting its fiscal house in order.
That confidence was reflected in higher prices for front-end Eurodollar futures, which amounted to expectations for lower short-term rates.
The price boost for front-end contracts also showed that market participants were not as worried about banks' exposure to sovereign debt of Greece and other countries that run the risk of default.
Also, Spain's prime minister announced austerity measures Wednesday aimed at reigning in government spending
Outright purchase of put options and various spread trades involving puts were mainly performed in the September and December 2010 Eurodollar contracts and in the March 2011 contract.
However, some of Wednesday's largest option trades forecast moves in the opposite direction.
For example, brokers reported a trading firm purchased as many as 20,000 December 2010 call options, predicting the futures price would climb to 99.375, seeing the three-month dollar Libor at 0.625%.
December 2010 Eurodollar futures settled Wednesday four basis points higher at 99.23, seeing Libor at 0.77% when the contract expires Dec. 13.
Option trades like those performed Wednesday can be a hedging tool, in addition to a method for profiting from a change in rate expectations.
Options embody hedging characteristics because they give traders the right, but not the obligation to buy or sell futures contracts at specific prices.
Meantime, federal-funds futures on Wednesday continued to reflect diminished market expectations for the U.S. Federal Reserve to raise its short-term funds rate this autumn.
The November 2010 contract priced in a 34% chance for the Federal Open Market Committee to lift the funds rate to 0.5% at its Nov. 2-3 meeting. That's down from a 40% chance at Tuesday's settlement, and a 42% chance at last Friday and Monday's settlements.
The funds rate has stayed inside a lowest-in-history range of 0% to 0.25% since December 2008. The Fed instituted its easy money policy to stimulate an economy suffering from the deepest recession since the 1930's.

The new pals act: Cameron and Clegg's comedy turn in the Downing St garden seals their coalition
Reply
In a light-hearted moment Mr Cameron admitted he once branded his new coalition partner a 'joke'.

At which point the Deputy PM then pretended to storm off - prompting Mr Cameron to plead with him to 'come back'.

His unfavourable assessment of the man who is now his closest new government colleague was recorded in a 2008 book by GQ editor Dylan Jones, who asked him for his favourite joke. 'Nick Clegg, at the moment,' he told him.

Asked by a reporter today about the jibe and whether he now regretted it, Mr Cameron turned to Mr Clegg and confessed: 'I'm afraid I did.'

Japan in risky territory: Things could turn ugly fast
Reply
There is no shortage of gloom and doomers worried about Japan. A Timesonline article from May the 10th entitled "Japan in risky territory: Things could get ugly fast" summarized some of the concerns. They said:

"On paper, Japan’s fiscal position looks irretrievably horrendous. It is worse, by some measures, than that of Greece and notably without any clear “exit strategy”. Gross public debt has edged up to 200 per cent of GDP. Net debt, at 100 per cent of GDP, is still in acutely dangerous territory. Persistent deflation, low real growth and the world’s most rapidly ageing population are poor ingredients for debt stabilisation.

Add to that fears that ordinary Japanese, via their savings invested by banks, will soon stop supporting government debt issuance. Yields will soar, and the Government will default, runs the terrifying bear case."

It is difficult to determine how much of this bear case has been priced into the market, but the argument is compelling.

The Japanese recovery rests on the ability to revive exports. This morning the US Trade balance report showed a modest increase in the trade deficit to $40.4B with most of the increase in imports, oil and industrial raw materials. Japan's largest trading partner, China, seems concerned with slowing their economy, and a higher yuan, which would help Japanese trade, does not appear imminent. Many Japanese exports compete with those from Germany who is benefiting from a weaker euro. Japanese exporters are certain to be pressuring the Minister of Finance for a weaker yen.

BIS (The Bank for International Settlements) in Basel has been on the offering in EUR/USD on behalf of sovereign accounts for the past several days. Earlier in the day they had kept a "lid" on the mkt at 12740/50. That offer has reportedly been moved lower to the 12690 area. No sizes have been noted but assuming the sales are on behalf on national banks who had previously be diversifying into Euro's from USD, there is likely to be more to come.

Not talking my book but simply restating what I have posted on GVI the past few days.

* Greek unions march, set strike for May 20
* Unions oppose pension reform, wage cuts
* Greek economy contracted 0.8 percent in first quarter
* Greece gets first 5.5 bln euros aid instalment

ATHENS, May 12 (Reuters) - About 2,000 Greeks marched to parliament on Wednesday to protest against spending cuts and tax hikes, as the debt-choked country received a first instalment of 5.5 billion euros as part of an EU-IMF "pain-for-gain" deal.

New figures published on Wednesday showed Greece's economy contracted 0.8 percent in the first quarter compared to the last three months of 2009.
The contraction was not as bad as expected, but economists see its pace accelerating in the next two quarters as wage cuts hit disposable incomes and uncertainty about economic prospects increases. People at the march vowed to keep protesting until the government backed down.

The May 20 walkout will take place a day after a 8.5 billion euro 10-year Greek bond matures, an event which pushed cash-strapped Greece to seek aid. On Wednesday, Athens received the first, 5.5 billion euro instalment from the multi-billion euro aid package, a bank official familiar with the deal said. Greece hopes to get another 14.5 billion euros in aid from the EU before May 19.

I can tell you this Cyclops- You stated some correct information about scalps and working in to a position. I can also tell you that I have maintained a bearish view on EUR/USD from many figures higher. Called for 1.2777 a long time ago and have maintained a bearish view on EUR/USD. Called for problems to be developing in Europe for a few years now as people were heckling about USD weakness (near the EUR/USD and GBP/USD peak) Made some 50 figures on a core short GBP/USD trade that I called for right near the highs and many took shots at me for doing so at the all time highs. I can be wrong like any other. Intraday trades and posts were for that cores are also.

Just stopped EUR/USD longs for a hair of a gain and will reposition for a rise higher again.

Zeus, Not trying to start something here, but you say you are long from close to the lows today, and now have a tight stop.A comfortable spot to be in. If I am not mistaking you started off going long from much higher levels and only got this low entry point average buy doing a lot, I mean a lot of scalping. Some people can this, and good for you that you can. I cannot. I am short Eur/US from 1.2695 with a stop at 1.2674. Short GBP/US from 1.4905 with a stop at 1.4887. Not trying to be anything here, but I am as well in comfortable spot, looking for 1.25 somehting and 1.47 something, with a lot less work. In other words that argument could be used either way.

Traders said any bounce in the euro is likely to be short-lived. In the near term, the key support level for the euro/dollar is near $1.25, the pair's 14-month low hit last week.
Investors also cited talk of a double no-touch option position in the euro with barriers at $1.25 and $1.31. Such a position suggests that the holder would buy euros on any drop toward $1.25 to defend that position until it expires.

BP Oil Spill - Cancer

Louisiana residents have enough problems to deal with from the recent Deepwater Horizon oil spill without worrying about breathing. But they might have to. The Louisiana Environmental Action Network (LEAN) recently evaluated the EPA's air content and quality testing results in Venice Beach, Louisiana and found that the level of some airborne toxins is greater than 100 times the quantity considered safe to humans.

LEAN's claims are beyond disturbing. The group reports that the hydrogen sulfide content at Venice Beach, Louisiana is up to 1,192 parts per billion. People start experiencing physical symptoms at 5 to 10 parts per billion. These symptoms include sore eyes, mucous membrane irritation, neurological damage (including dementia, disorientation, and memory failure), adverse respiratory effects, tremor, headache, dizziness, and ocular damage. LEAN also claims that levels of volatile organic compounds are also higher than normal:

OIL SPILL RISKS: The risk right now is for people cleaning up the oil spill and for those who live along the Gulf of Mexico and the coast of Louisiana. An environmental action group says people are reporting headaches, nausea and coughing. The short-term concerns are from the inhalation of chemicals that are released by the oil into the air- such as benzene and toluene. In the long term, the concern is contamination of fish and marine life which affects the entire food chain.

The upcoming hurricane season could be a top 10 active year, a stark contrast from the relatively calm 2009 season.

AccuWeather.com Chief Hurricane Meteorologist Joe Bastardi predicts a total of 16-18 storms this season. To put that in perspective, only eight years in the 160 years of records have had 16 or more storms in a season.

The season should start early with one or two threats by early July, and stay late with additional threats extending well into October.

When EUR/USD was high people imagined higher, when low, they imagine lower. And if you take a contrary opinion at extremes then prepare for a barrage of incoming salvos.
We are going to see some channeling. That is all there is to it. Don't forget, USD is one sick puppy. So are all primary currencies. Metal is the option of trust and credibility for now.

Physical delivery is the preferred method to preserve wealth not speculate on the increase. Can use financial instruments for the speculation. As mentioned some time ago would use SI futures, SLV ETF and would generally stay away from silver mining stocks with the exception of SLW.

When the "lights go out" (TSHTF) possession is the law. For parking wealth, nothing will do but taking physical delivery. there are more ounces on contract with the COMEX than there are physically above ground globally. I have a dream that traders will all squeeze through the same door and demand physical delivery. We saw a scare last year with such for gold in German demand. It is coming.

Happy Trades.

The unemployment crisis continues to stymie a full economic recovery, with ripple effects from credit card delinquencies and rising food stamp participation causing hardship for millions of Americans, according to the latest update of Huffington Post's Real Misery Index.

The index for March/April 2010 was 33.1, a slight increase from 33.0 in February, representing another new high in the 26 years going back to 1984 analyzed by HuffPost. Though there have been some encouraging signs, from higher housing prices (which have an inverse relationship to the index) to declining home equity delinquencies, the jobless numbers continue to increase the misery.

Though the Real Misery Index has increased 16% from March 2009 to April 2010, the stock market has increased 56% during that period, reflecting an alarming discrepancy between the two metrics.

Good morning guys. Well yes I do take quite a beating on these boards. That is the game. Trades alone never seem to stop the barrage of happiness here. Silver? Silver is THE SINGLE BEST hedge. Gold is good. Silver will be phenomenal. Silver is still trading at levels below production cost. Fewer physical ounces for trade than gold, demand increases as new nano technology uses emerge daily. Nothing conducts electricity better, nothing reflects light better and nothing is a better anti microbial upon contact. It is a precious metal as well. Few silver only mines exist. It is principally a byproduct of mining other metals so extremely difficult to fill a void in a supply crunch. JP Morgan has been busted in a multi-decade long effort to suppress the price. The hedge will roll off. $20 is a given. $50 cannot be stopped and it will go into the several $100's if not $1000's in time. The gold/silver ratio will squeeze back below 15:1 and could even see 1:1.

ATHENS, May 12 (Reuters) - Greek workers on Wednesday called a 24-hour general strike for May 20, the latest in a series of protests against planned pension cuts linked to an international 110-billion-euro ($139.7 billion) bailout for Greece.
Public and private sector unions had initially called a strike for May 19, but decided later on Wednesday to move the walkout a day later, saying they did not want to hinder national university entry tests on the same day.
Unionists have vowed to stop the pension reform, a key condition in a financial rescue plan for Greece agreed last week with the euro zone and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The country's socialist government unveiled a draft law on Monday that raises the average retirement age and pares back benefits to plug the pension system's ballooning deficits.
"The IMF will not stop thirsting for workers' blood," said Yannis Panagopoulos, chairman of Greece's main private sector labour union GSEE. "Its recipes are a disaster and the government must turn them down."
The walkout is expected to ground flights to and from Greece, disrupt transport and shut down ministries and public services across the country. The unions will convene after the strike to decide on future action.
Greek workers last went on strike on May 5, when protesters threw petrol bombs at a bank in Athens, killing three employees, in the worst violence the country saw since riots in 2008.
Civil servants and public sector employees, who have vowed to step up protests, will march to parliament late on Wednesday to protest against austerity.
Greece submitted this week a formal request for the first tranche of the EU/IMF multi-billion euro aid, seeking money to refinance an 8.5-billion-euro bond maturing on May 19.

NEW YORK, May 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. trade deficit widened in March to its highest level in more than a year, as both imports and exports rose by more than 3 percent in a sign of improved U.S. and foreign demand, the government said on Wednesday.
KEY POINTS:
* The trade gap increased 2.5 percent to $40.4 billion, the highest since December 2008, up slightly from a revised estimate of $39.4 billion for February.
* Wall Street analysts surveyed before the report had expected a smaller increase of $40.1 billion.
COMMENTS:
JOE MANIMBO, MARKET ANALYST, TRAVELEX GLOBAL BUSINESS PAYMENTS,
WASHINGTON "The data is generally in line with expectations. There are glimmers of hope in the report, with increases in exports and imports. That bodes well for global demand. The data, however, has limited impact on currencies. Overall, it is still risk appetite dictating the market. Risk appetite is up following days of heightened volatility. We could be in a for a bit of consolidation in currencies such as the euro as investors step back and assess the market post the EU/IMF bailout."
PETER KENNY, MANAGING DIRECTOR AT KNIGHT EQUITY MARKETS, JERSEY
CITY, NEW JERSEY "This isn't good, but it isn't reversing a trend. Because this is part of a trend, it won't be a market mover, though this certainly doesn't help the market. What's more important today is the euro and stability in Europe."
PIERRE ELLIS, SENIOR ECONOMIST, DECISION ECONOMICS, NEW YORK:
"The trade numbers look favorable in terms of the progress in exports. Imports were strong, too, excluding petroleum, which diminishes the effect on stimulating the American economy but in relation to the GDP numbers, it probably implies a better performance in the first quarter. Heading into a riskier period for the world economy, strong exports puts us on a better footing."
MARKET REACTION:
STOCKS: U.S. stock futures holds gains.
BONDS: U.S. Treasury debt prices hold losses.
DOLLAR: U.S. dollar hold gains against the yen.

Data @ 12:30 GMT

U.S. and Canada Merchandise Trade
Some expecting a significant decline in the U.S. deficit.

Broad Definition: Merchandise trade is trade in goods only, not services, and excludes capital transfers and foreign investments. Exports are total exports; they include both domestically-produced goods and re-exports, which constitute imports of goods which are warehoused here, then re-exported. Imports are general imports, which measure total arrivals of goods. The. Balance of trade is defined as total exports minus general imports.

IMPACT: Trade figures used to be viewed as the most important statistic for the forex market. It goes to proper valuation of the exchange rate, but can also reflect relative demand for goods. A trade deficit is a net deduction from GDP, while a surplus is an addition.

The most simple and primitive way to check for levels of risk aversion is just to observe the current stock market indexes in Europe.
Combine the reasonable view that Cad Aus Nok will be leaders of the next surge, it will be just a common sense to sell yen against them.
Why not? The Japanese would love to see their yen lower, so a surge of USD/Yen close to 95 at this time is not far from reality.

The European Central Bank will hold euro zone government bonds which it is currently buying until they mature, ECB Executive Board member Juergen Stark said on Wednesday.
Stark repeated ECB promises to sterilise money put into the economy during its programme of bond purchases, the ECB's part of a $1 trillion attempt to resolve the euro zone debt crisis, which began on Monday.
But the ECB could mop up extra liquidity from areas other than the government bond market as it offsets any potential inflationary effects of the programme.
"The government bonds which we're buying today will be held until the end of their maturity," he told Deutschlandfunk radio. "In the course of time we will neutralise the liquidity effects. We will mop up this extra liquidity again. We've done this in the past."
The ECB had other mechanisms for neutralising the effects of the bond purchases. "We hold the government bonds but mop up liquidity in other areas," he said. "This is about the overall liquidity effect and not just the particular effect in the area of government debt."

risk appetite today????!!!!????

hi Taro,
i just woke up and shared what i saw(together with my "sceptical" view/comment)
eursek/eurnok...yes.eursek/eurnok down=risk is on(appetite)..and vice versa...(of course, you have to brush up on your Scandies on daily basis to filter out the noise!)some time ago while playing eursek i realised that it's pretty dumb scratching my brains about risk when 2 CBs are already doing it for me.at first it was just a theory, but for a long while now i play it in blind faith!

Morning Tokyo rana.

Mostly I see with traders is that the actual trade they execute is correct in terms of their decision, however, they cannot manage the emotion of retracement or gen pull back and panic sets in. Basically half the size of the lots equals double the stop levels so it equates to same thing as larger lot size tighter stops. Thats a very basic look at it but we can talk technical calculations for stops etc

As faith in the top tier fails, it is second tier currencies that will be winners
Reply
As faith in the top tier fails, it is second tier currencies that will be winners, says Nicholas Hastings in Forex Focus. At the moment, the NOK, SEK, CAD and AUD are lining up to rally. This week has not only brought confirmation that EU efforts to save the EUR from a further nasty ride have essentially failed, but that the political uncertainty in the UK that has hurt the GBP is only likely to continue. For the moment, the traditional safe havens for investors--the USD and the JPY--have stepped up to the plate, especially given the latest decline in global risk sentiment. However, the international investment community could soon start to look elsewhere, both because prospects for the USD and the JPY look uncertain and because global appetite should improve.

ECB's Stark Sees No Long-Term Trend To Euro Depreciation
Reply
The European Central Bank's program to buy government bonds doesn't signal the start of a long-term decline in the euro's value, executive board member Juergen Stark said Wednesday.

Stark told national German radio station Deutschlandfunk that the program, adopted by the ECB early Monday in response to growing signs of seizure in some of the euro zone's government debt markets, won't generate any extra inflationary pressure because the ECB will take other measures to withdraw the liquidity created by the program.

Stark also denied that the ECB had buckled under political pressure in adopting the program, saying that "no taboo has been breached."

He argued that other countries in the developed world have bigger problems with their public debt and that their central banks could, accordingly, come under greater political pressure to inflate that debt away.

"The problems with government debt aren't confined to the euro area," Stark said.

Hi Clearwater----

I look for 50 pips. A conservative FIB retrace figure.

Thanks jkt-aye. Inside bars yield the entry buy and sell level---alas, not much help on setting a stop limit.

I usually use a 15 pip buffer---more conservative trading. that is, i add 15 pips before entering the trade even though the inside bar sell/buy line is set.

Australian Leading Employment Indicator Rises In May
CHINA ENERGY WATCH: China Miners Sweet On Australia Despite Tax
)--Australia's proposed "super profits" tax on the resources sector has wiped billions of dollars off the value of local mining and energy stocks, but at least one set of investors isn't too worried: Chinese miners.

China spent a record $5.2 billion on buying Australian coal assets last year--part of a broader strategy that saw it increase its resources footprint in everything from iron ore to coal seam gas--as it sought to lock up raw materials to feed its booming economy.

Australia was favored as a destination for Chinese investment because of its political stability, transparent tax regime and a clearer approval process than resource-rich neighbors such as Indonesia or Papua New Guinea.
Chinese miners are more sanguine, saying their Australian investments are long-term and motivated as much by energy security as a generous rate of return.

An official at Yanzhou Coal Mining Co. (YZC), which acquired Australia's Felix Resources Ltd. last year, said: "I don't think the new tax plan will be as bad as people fear. We will certainly increase our investments in Australia if we can find new projects that provide reasonable returns to us."

Yanzhou said Australian miners would pay less tax if they invest more, as capital expenditure is a tax-deductible expense when the proposed new resource super profits tax is calculated. Also, the tax's impact on company earnings would be limited because of several rebates and a lower corporation tax rate.

&P said its triple-A long-term and A-1+ short-term sovereign ratings reflected the agency’s opinion of Australia’s strong public finances, its sound financial sector, resilient economy and open and transparent policy environment.
‘‘AAA’’ is the highest rating assigned by Standard & Poor’s.

good moring to all....
So what i see now, this could be the final wave B of 4, which i looking posibble B finish at 125 ~ 120.59. Only start the new wave C to complete wave 4.

Just a question here is for FR (white). Have you seen retracement of A over 78.6 before for this B? This is what i concern about. This is the 1st time i see B target overshoot retrace of A nearly 90% and nearly to all time low 118.77 there.

any comment is welcome.
happy trade

Cable rises as Conservative Cameron takes over as U.K.'s new PM

The British pound rose against dollar and euro after Conservative leader David Cameron took over as U.K.'s new prime minister. The pair also drew support from optimism over a potential Conservative and Liberal Democrats coalition.

The British pound traded with a soft bias on Tuesday initially in Asia and briefly dipped to 1.4720 in Europe. However, the pair later rebounded from there and rose sharply to an intra-day high of 1.5005 on optimism that Britain's Conservative party might be nearing an agreement to form a new coalition government with the Liberal Democrats. Gordon Brown later officially resigned as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour party with immediate effect. Conservative leader David Cameron subsequently became Britain's new Prime Minister. Cable pared gains on profit taking before stabilising.

The single currency continued to decline as investors were worried if the almost $1 trillion (750 billion euros) bailout package would help the region's most-indebted nations to contain deficits. Despite brief recovery to 1.2803, price then extended decline from Monday's high of 1.3095 and fell to as low as 1.2656 in NY afternoon. In other news, Greece was likely to submit a request for the first installment of a 110 billion euros ($147.6 billion) aid package from the EU and IMF. Finance Minister of Greece also said the government would ask for a total of 20 billion euros, in part to refinance an 8.5 billion euro 10-year bond that would mature on May 19. Besides, Fed's Bernanke described EU's almost $ 1 trillion package as ' not a panacea ' and that wasn't a cure during a close-door briefing with the banking committee.

Gold rose above its previous high of $1226.60 an ounce set on Dec. 3, 2009, hitting an all-time high at 1233.90 an ounce in NY session as worries on European debt crisis drove investors to buy gold as a safe-haven asset.

Economic data to be released on Wednesday include: Japan Leading indicators , Germany GDP , Swiss Combined PPI , U.K. Claimant count , U.K. ILO Unemployment rate , EU GDP , Industrial production , Canada Trade balance , Exports, Imports , New housing price , U.S. trade balance and Fed budget.

Australia Will Find Buyers Easily For L/T Debt-ANZ
Reply
Australia will have no problem finding buyers for some to-be issued long-term debt, says Tony Morriss, senior IR strategist at ANZ. After Australia's debt agency outlined a net A$37 billion of new Treasury bonds, with lines extending out to 2025, Morriss eyes good underlying demand. "There's going to be good interest in longer-dated Treasury bonds given what we've seen through quantitative easing around the world. Gives them more flexibility with their borrowing program."

Euro

Buying into stock market means more Euro in the hands of those who sold them.
This can be offset by selling bonds by the ECB, which is the Q. who will buy those big amounts when the banks themselves are not cash rich.
Maybe Geithner will buy those bonds, or swap USD for Euro with the ECB to help.

DJ PRECIOUS METALS: Gold Surge May Last Longer Than December Spike
Reply
Gold's surge to record levels overnight will be more lasting than December's four-day spike above $1,200, traders and analysts believe, as fears over the European economies consolidate.

The metal jumped on Tuesday from around $1,203 a troy ounce before European trading hours to around $1,217/oz as North American traders started to arrive, before jumping a further 1% to hit a peak of $1,234.25 at 1915 GMT.

The move meant a rise of more than 4% from gold's low of $1,183.75, hit after the announcement of a EUR750 billion bailout package for debt-laden economies on the euro zone's periphery.

Gold previously peaked at $1,226.30 on Dec. 3, 2009.

Robert Reenie of Westpac Bank in Sydney said the timing of the move was surprising, but not the level.

"To me this is a move we should have been seeing last week. We had a sense that Europe had put in place a mechanism that prevents the doomsday scenario, but this suggests that people are more concerned now about what Europe is going to need to get over its problems," he said.

The sharp move contrasted with a more gentle fall in the euro, which fell from $1.2739 at 1700 GMT to $1.2639 at 2300 GMT, narrowly above last week's lows.

Dollar strength is traditionally bearish for gold, since the metal is mostly priced in the U.S. currency, but in recent months that pattern has been broken as investors view the metal as a more stable alternative currency.

"This is flight to quality stuff. Even silver's had a leg up," said a Sydney-based metal trader, who argued that gold would persist above $1,200/oz this time.

"This is a new level. People are going to try and have the gold through exchange-traded funds, and in a week's time we'll probably see another record high in ETF volume."

Holdings in SPDR Gold Shares, the world's largest gold exchange-traded fund, rose 3.65 metric tons to a record 1,192.15 tons, according to data on the ETF's website as of Monday.

Some traders argue that ETF's are responsible for some of the recent volatility in metals markets.

Jonathan Barratt, managing director of Commodity Broking Services in Sydney, put the violent moves down to gold futures traders having to roll over their forward contracts as existing contracts mature.

"I think the rise is a bit overdone," he added.

Reenie argued that the timing of the move indicated an increasing bifurcation in views of Europe between Asia and the U.S.

"Asia is quite happy to invest in Europe and seems to see the euro weakness as an opportunity to buy into currencies other than the U.S. dollar, but the bigger funds in the northern hemisphere have basically voted against the euro," he said.

Euro

"The whole idea that ECB will intervene in the bond and stock markets keeping on buying everything they like, means more Euros in the Mkt."

Wrong. Means less euros in the market. If they buy euros they will keep it away from the market. When they think euro its too high than they sell euros and the market will be full of them.
In this period they might buy euros so in the market will be less euros.
