I used our extensive fx database, which by the way is the best on the web (and downloadable to an excel spreadsheet), to calculate the daily average EUR/USD close since its inception on January 4, 1999. The average close was 1.1831. Interesting, the EUR/USD closed on its first official trading day (Jan 4, 1999) at 1.1825.

The way this pair is headed, it will likely trade at its launch rate at some point, perhaps soon and would not that be the world's greatest zero sum game when it does. All these gyrations (historic range .8228-1.6040) and it would be back to square one where it all began.

with today's low this month's range comes at perfect big figure (1,3359-1,2358).
Last month we had a wider range was just a year ago, on may 2009 (1,3211-1,4245)
First support to break comes @ 2328, and then a free fall towards 1,1 or even parity
Looking at monthly chart this could happen before the end of the year with a first serious retracement at the 200 MA around 1,19
All this words don't mean nothing from the perspective of a day trader as i am, just food for thougths
Happy WE to everybody

I remember your post from ~ 6 months ago ... anyway after a false break at $87 oil is declining ... I think it's zone (green on the chart) are good for the long long-term position ... also break below $69 would lead to $64 or less ... I'm still Bullish on long term and I think that this is a good place to accumulate ... reason for the temporarily flat is a variation of more than 3% on the same day, which can cause more large fluctuations and the market is very sensitive ... we'll see:) ... anyway thank's for information ...

Interesting chart there Jay, following on from that and taking into account retracement theory, to avoid entering at the wrong level, selling ahead of the 1.25 should yield a result either way imo. Of course we are not yet done, but at 1.25 we would be about 1 and a half big figures off this weeks low and that would constitue a decent retracement and thus a good level at which to initiate a short, with the plus being that any move over 1.25 (change aside) would suggest further strength and so would give us a signal to move in the opposite direction in the event that the short fails. Nothing is ever black and white in fx, far from it, but in this case working out what comes next will be that little bit easier.

1.23-1.24 proving to be a "nervous zone" as suggested with major 1.2331 support looming below. The pop up just now hit resistance around 1.2433, which was the earlier low. Treating all pops as limited unless 1.25+ is renewed. Market feels exhausted after a long week. It seems an eternity since the post w/e reaction that reached 1.3093.

Technically, the AUD/USD appears to be building a supportive bottom which could trigger a rally into a zone at .9047 to .9228. A sharp break in U.S. equity markets however is likely to make traders resume the recent downtrend.

NZD/USD traded higher because of the increase in the country’s business main index from 56.7 to 58.9. Technically, this currency remains rangebound between .7325 to .7007. This makes .7166 to .7203 a key retracement zone. Close under the 50% price at .7166 puts this market in a weak position and should encourage further selling pressure, especially if the U.S. stock indices collapse.

LONDON, May 14 (Reuters) - With fears of the euro zone's first sovereign default alleviated by unprecedented support packages, Greece and Portugal will make debt repayments that should ease the pressure of a heavy week of debt supply.
Spain and Ireland, two of the euro zone's higher-yielding issuers, can expect to find a much less volatile environment in which to issue their debt thanks to a bumper rescue package that has stabilised peripheral bond markets after weeks of turmoil.
The giant $1 trillion safety net has spread a fragile calm among investors, which should aid the smooth sale of more risky credit, with the added reassurance of central banks buying up bonds in secondary markets should conditions deteriorate.

"What is a big change to two weeks ago is that the ECB is standing out there and it has a lot of ammunition to put to work," said Michael Leister, strategist at WestLB in Dusseldorf.

Peripheral debt yields have fallen from euro lifetime highs, allowing sovereigns to resume funding activity which had been subdued by soaring borrowing costs as investors worried some highly indebted countries would not be able to repay their debts.
On May 19, Greece will make a much anticipated repayment of 8.5 billion euros with the help of rescue funds from the International Monetary Fund and other euro zone members.
Portugal repays 4.4 billion euros after a reverse auction to buy back the bonds on May 12 met muted demand with investors content to hold the paper to maturity.
Ireland, which had previously toyed with the idea of skipping this month's auction will re-open two bonds, looking to raise up to 1.5 billion euros, while Spain will raise up to 4 billion euros in the ten-year part of the curve.
"Due to all this volatility I'm sure that the treasuries haven't been able to issue as much as they want over the last few weeks," Leister added.
"Therefore it's not so much about the bid to cover and price valuation but how successful they are in terms of size."

Belgrade TD 16:37 GMT May 14, 2010
indices

* Greek, Portuguese 12.9 bln euro redemptions to ease sales
* Spain and Ireland issue into becalmed peripheral market
* Medium-term concerns set to underpin demand for core

The Netherlands' status as a quality credit should underpin ample demand for a new 2042 DSL issue at the long end of the curve, with some investors fretting over the implications for growth of severe budget cuts in peripheral states.
"Given the underlying flight to safety, it's not necessarily about the yield because, for the Netherlands, it's just the fact that it's a very good credit," said Padhraic Garvey, head of investment grade debt strategy at ING.
Similarly, French and German sales were expected to be well bid, as the relief that followed the weekend announcement of the rescue package ebbed on longer-term concerns, with stock markets giving back a reasonable share of gains made earlier in the week.
Germany will auction 6 billion euros of 10-year paper and French supply could top 10 billion euros, with sales of medium-term BTANs and inflation-linked OATS.
With investors in both core and periphery debt finding reasons to bid, and with the influx of May's only euro zone bond redemptions, analysts expected few hitches in taking down the 26.5 billion euros of debt on offer.
"Whether it's core or periphery there's a reason to buy. For core it's a safety play, for periphery you've got the ECB there as a backstop," Garvey added.

The Euro is the story in currencies with all eyes on the 1.2328 low during the US financial crisis. Dealers are also watching the 1.40 level in the EUR/CHF cross as a key market indicator as the SNB is still rumored to be around there

Another use of the money from gold sales, is to use it as margin money for additional gold sales if justified. hehehe

For the time Euro is aiming at 1.2170.

nyc only just read your post, there are not many straws they can clutch at now, but I would think any intervention would have to be of the scale of the days of Mr Yen and take the cross many big figures higher. But then in those days the market held respect for the BoJ and they didn't need to spend a lot of money, just enough to announce their presence in the market was enough to take a few figures off usdjpy. But here, with the ecb, you feel its lacking so even if they took it through 1.40, you feel it would still in time trade its way lower within a month or two. As they says intervention rarely work when it goes strongly against fundamentals.

good point - btw it is good contrarian trading strategy - buying gold on shiny days - like it was a good accumulation point in the 2001-2004 ..
I'm not sure if the wealth haven status is that good idea when you can sell your holdings in Gold at sky high prices and then invest the cash in business that will be performing times more once the economy is back in the growth phase.. just an idea..

Silver is a commodity as it has lot of uses.

Gold is not a commodity, but just a metal, a metal with deep psychological meaning.

USD/JPY Mid-Day Outlook
USDJPY Outlook - Written by ActionForex.com - May 14 10 13:54 GMT
Intraday bias in USD/JPY remains neutral for the moment. On the downside, below 92.22 minor support will indicate that rebound from 88.24 has completed and will flip intraday bias to the downside for 90.86 and below. On the upside, above 93.62 will bring another rise. However, we'd expect upside to be limited below 94.97 high and bring at least one more short term fall.

GBP/JPY's break of 135.88 minor support suggests that rebound from 130.00 has completed at 140.55 already. Intraday bias is flipped back to the downside and further fall should be seen to retest 130.00 low. On the upside, however, break of 139.49 resistance will argue that rise from 130.00 is still and progress and resuming. Focus will then be turned back to 145.94 high

I tried to short it around 1246 - then long it around 1247 but the volatility in this market is far greater than I'm used to in the FX... so as I saw it didn't pop ahead of the break in S&P and T-BOnds I shorted it at 1245 - unfortunately got too little on the way down...

A Middle East account has been a recent [EUR/USD] buyer, inspiring the 1.25-plus return. More weak stops are seen through 1.2525, we are told. A break there could open up the 1.2570/00 where we would expect a batch of heavy sellers to be lying in wait. The move higher coincides with loose talk of a possible [G7] teleconference on Greece. Recall one took place last Fri and the Euro was bought on the news, but came under more pressure after as officials declined to comment, refraining from saying anything positive on the situation.

As I suggested before ~1.2525, may form an important level to breach for further gains(let's see), which may take prices above 1.2600 maybe even to 1.2770(+-10).

trading VS. cheap talk
Reply
sorry to meddle since I got no dog in this fight neither I'd like to ever get into such argument, however I needed to share my experience..

we here depend on basic honesty and only with time one can tell who is good and who not - even posting live trading doesn't help as I can post a counter trade and it might work and don't hit the stop but still I might not hold it long enough...

then there is the controversy of making money VS. good analysis - my own experience tells me I made great calls that I have archived on my blog with the subsequent justifications but I still have problems with the actual trading methodology

and at the end - there is the diversity of opinions, methods and timeframes + equity size...

so in my humble view we gotta be thankful if we survive in the market and thank to those who are sincere and generous enough to supply the forum with diverse opinions and trade ideas - and at the end it never matter what people say but what is the actual performance - which gives yo the opportunity to live a better life.

People are allowed to express a supporting or opposing point of view. Just because someone is disagreeing it does not constitute an attack as long as it is done respectfully. I emphasize the word "respectfully." This is what a market is about, traders on opposing sides. In fact, you can have opposing views and both make money depending on what time frame you trade. This is not a contest for bragging rights. In the end, all that matters is your P&L.

You have to remember this is a forum with tens of thousands of members from over 150 countries and it operates amazingly well as a community. Let's get on with trading and all discussions are encouraged as long as they are conducted with respect.

Don't bother about them. Do your thingd, participate as you wish, and ignore the ones that you d'on't like and the ones that don't like you.

You know, it is just a forum here. People can say whatever they want, no one knows if it is true or not. Nobody here has the proof that you do take your trades, but when you commit yourself, but people notice the ones that are right more often.

Don't feel bad because of them. And when you don't aggre with someone, well, don't do like them and attack, it's worthless!

Looking at EUR movements, it is very obvious that to ask you to short

The “market’s heart” has only one thing in mind------SELL EURO.

The market sentiment is definitely against EURO at the moment. This culminate to a technical picture very much against EURO. Resistant levels to watch. They are: 1.2529 (Fat finger night low); 1.2455 (2009 low); 1.2330 (2008 low) and 1.2135 (50% retracement of 2000-2008 surge).

Relocation of a possible price recoil point.

I may assume that the recent decline has brought a windfall of shorts for EUR/USD(bottom orgy), so now one may not exclude a recoil to above 1.26++.
Once a trend reversal will happen(IF) it will go by 100pips quantum leaps.
The alternative, keep your stoploss!!!

London M & Sofia , nice reading your comments and thanks for your kind words. I am finding day trading very whippy and the moves are so sharp and violent i leave it to the younger sharper traders now. The fact most of these moves now revolve around the equity indices is also very annoying. There is no such thing as a free lunch so the DNT is well known to the cb's and the market as was the case with the SNB defending 1.50 now defending 1.40. I have spent more time looking at algorithmic trading programme's in the last 3 years ( if you cant beat them join them ) and just taken on a joint venture. So i try and keep away from all the noise of the day traders and take a more relaxed med/longer term view. Seems to be working. I actually dont have spot prices on my screen now but running prices for the dow,s+p, nasdaq, dax, ftse etc, lets hope we get back to some normality soon. GL/GT

hi JB nice to read the fund mgr's view on this side

on the lower timeframes (hourlies) Eur/Usd really trends down but the price action seems some one is pounding it to breach the 1.25 psychological line but it goes up way too fast so my assumption is they are just trying to attract fresh shorts and then they can swiftly reverse and take the weak hands with a quick swing to above 1.26..

I amended my stop to 1.2476 but wasn't bold enough to add around 1.25

The pair is still fluctuating around pivotal resistance 1.1120; whereas the bullish technical pattern is still intact and awaits a start signal that will be achieve through building a base above 1.1120. MA 50 is supporting the pair to move to the upside, therefore we expect a bullish intraday trend that targets 1.1250 – 1.1290 and requires the four hour close above 1.1050.

morning U.K. J.B.

I know you are the long-term player so that I hesitate to write about my forecast on 'this week's US index' movement.
I believe S&P500 did hit the top yesterday for this week and can go down towards 1130/35 area.

it was told that there were about 1 yard of bids on Euro around 1.25 to protect DNT at 1.2500 but it was gone.

1.2150 is the level, according to some news article, that the central banks who switched their foreign reserves from USD into Euro in the past will start bleeding with losses.

from that reason, the market may try to 'test' the central banks' reaction to bring Euro down to their bleeding level?
let's see.

btw I always enjoy reading your comments. I have learnt a lot from them. Big thanks!

Same story again this morning. Everyone bearish the Euro/dollar after my round of phone calls. The only reason the euro is soft again is simply the equity indices are very weak. The interesting point is that they are short with a 1.25 handle so no rocket science there. Dow futures 29 in the red , no need to rush in yet but i am certainly not in the bearish lazy mans camp of being short the euro GL/GT

Portugal sold their 10 yr paper without problems yesterday and the options pricing points to a more two way market i.e. an "orderly" decline that allows scalpers and swing traders to deplete accounts of trend lovers from time to time. But overall the € trand still seems to be southbound. What will happen should the fiscal consolidation of problem countries take longer than expected? Will ECB sell the IOUs and crush their price? Probably not. They will rather cheat on taxpayers forever.

Well it is easy for you to try and take stabs right? I post trades and you prefer to just give ideas i.e. "short every rally....up in hrs dn in moments...you want to be long that?"

Have explained here many times so please listen once- I am core short EUR/USD...OMG! That's right. Have posted that for many figures higher when I posted that 1.2777 was coming and people (probably you) laughed. Also posted that the positions I was trading the last few days since I took huge gains for going long EUR/USD last week on the gap up (that's right. It's all there in the archives) was trading on some certain lows and either rolled over after 40-60 pip rallys on scalps or let some go at b/e as it came back. So, here we are. I said today would be the final stand and it is. I stay long from the lows even if lower lows are seen. Have core shorts and plenty of precious metals as hedges and positions- remember the post late April about the pending catapult in gold? Did you write that? ;-)

Anyway. Nice attempt at character attacking. I'll keep crushing it in the rally and will see you at 1.2777+ cool?

Peace out.

as I said before, I prefer to short EUR and GBP for every rally. The momentum is down, so this stretegy must works. It is much safe to short rather than long to earn that little pips. Besides, if you are insisted that your view didn't change, then why EUR now target is only 1.265? For real traders, if followed your position, started long EUR above 1.27X, then already S/L for how many times? Can you explain why GBP suddenly fall ~100 pips just half an hour ago? I am not challenging you, but wonder how can trading like yours.

The Daily Sentiment Index is widely followed by leveraged traders with the biggest global macro hedge funds eyeing many sentiment indices. The percentage of bulls in the Euro has fallen to near record lows, for good fundamental reasons. However, the percentage of Euro bulls has fallen to just 12% on a one-month average which has some technicians wary of the uptrade in the dollar index continuing. For DXY, the sentiment index shows 84% bulls.

This sentiment extreme is worth watching, especially in light of the fact that the Euro is nearing the March 2009 low of 1.2458. DXY continues to grind higher, having taken out the May 7 high at 85.14. The next resistance level is the high for the move at 85.26 - support continues to be at the 8-day moving average at 84.42 today.

My view of GBP is 1.3800

Technically, the downward breaking of 1.4785 really broke my heart. As on the chart, this means it is highly likely that it will challenge the wide region between 1.4395 – 1.4525 as I kept mentioning this week. A breaking through of this region will see it dangling around the 1.41’s level. And 1.3800 will then be just around the corner.

Information-wise, a censored-biggy player was selling GBP like there was no tomorrow last night at 1.4800 and targeting at same level as me: 1.3800.

Please do not ask me reasons for my bearish GBP view. All you need to know is that at the moment, there is nothing else you need except: Follow the hearts.

If you want some consolation, read the following from a media:-

“The GBP/USD is having trouble regaining the 1.4600 handle after selling off 1.5% yesterday and even losing 0.85% against the friendless EUR. The sell off was sparked by worse than expected UK trade numbers, which hit home the difficulties the UK will have exporting their way out of the pain upcoming austerity measures will inflict. BOE Governor King said on Wednesday that it will be important for the UK to increase exports in the coming months due to the likelihood the UK domestic economy will see demand dampened by the huge cuts in spending needed to cut the fiscal deficit. The market is now wondering how low the GBP has to go against the USD and EUR to spur much needed export growth and the BOE will likely encourage GBP weakness of at the very least be highly tolerant of it in the months ahead.”

Some encouraging signs on the foreclosure front may not be as rosy as some are reporting. RealtyTrac, the online foreclosure sale site, shows a 9 percent dip in the number of properties with foreclosure filings in April, month-to-month.
The driver of that dip is a big drop in new notices of default.
The final stage of foreclosure, that is bank repossessions (REO) shot up to a new record high, up 45 percent from a year ago. "People are sitting in their houses not paying their mortgages, and the banks are letting those delinquencies extend longer and longer periods of time before they put them in foreclosure," Sharga told me. That, he adds, is the main reason we're seeing lower numbers of new defaults.
The borrowers are in default, but the banks aren't paying attention, so they don't show up in the numbers.

Looking at EUR movements, it is very obvious that to ask you to short

The “market’s heart” has only one thing in mind------SELL EURO.

The market sentiment is definitely against EURO at the moment. This culminate to a technical picture very much against EURO. Resistant levels to watch. They are: 1.2529 (Fat finger night low); 1.2455 (2009 low); 1.2330 (2008 low) and 1.2135 (50% retracement of 2000-2008 surge).

if we talk about the TA, there is almost no reason for any other view than sell ... but it can be said for almost all pairs, because while the situation is resolved with the euro, I doubt there will be places for serious long-term positions ... and I see a market that oscillates in anticipation of the euro dismissal ... can take positions in the long periods but why would it work if I'm not sure of a positive outcome ... If I see the euro at 1:50 at the end of the year, and I think that the current price and everything below it a good level to accumulate, I will buy regardless of the drop in prices and the current trend ... in this case I will open a new post and indicate what I do ... Euro and pound fall on continued market woes

The euro fell for a third day versus the dollar on concerns the harsh fiscal tightening in Europe would lead to slower growth of euro-zone's economy. Weakness in US stocks also hurt market sentiment and pressured euro as DJI ended the day down 1.05%. Despite intra-day brief recovery to 1.2685 in European morning in thin trading conditions as many European countries were off for Ascension Day holiday, euro later fell sharply to 1.2540 in NY morning. Although euro then managed a minor recovery, renewed selling at 1.2597 pushed the single currency close to its last week's 14-month low of 1.2510 before stabilising. In other news, report showed Greece would submit a deficit-cutting progress report to EU this coming Saturday. Earlier, Portugal lowered its budget-deficit goal for 2011 to 4.6 percent and approved tax increases and spending cuts.

Although the British pound edged higher to 1.4917 at London opening on short-covering, cable retreated sharply from there and intra-day decline picked up downward momentum after the release of wider-than-expected U.K. trade deficit, which came in at -7.52 billion pounds, the highest trade gap since January, versus the economists' forecast of -6.41 billion and revised -6.30 billion in February. Cross-selling in the pound especially versus euro also weighed on cable as eur/gbp rose sharply from 0.8498 to 0.8594. Sterling eventually tanked to as low as 1.4593 in NY afternoon.

Versus the Japanese yen, the greenback moved narrowly in Asia and then rose sharply to 93.65 in European morning. However, the pair swiftly retreated from there and tumbled to 92.59 in NY mid-day due to active unwinding of yen carry trades on risk aversion as U.S. stocks and commodities fell in U.S. session.

In other news, Minneapolis Federal Reserve President Narayana Kocherlakota said the Fed would raise interest rates if economic conditions change appropriately.

On economic front, U.S. jobless claims fell to 444,000 versus economists' forecast of 440,000 in the latest week (May 1 to May 8) from upwardly revised 448,000 in the prior week. U.S. April export price came in at 1.2% m/m versus 0.4% forecast and April import price came in 0.9% versus 0.8% forecast.

Economic data to be released on Friday include: New Zealand retail sales, U.S. retail sales, capacity utilization, industrial production, University of Michigan survey and business inventories.
