I see all comments are so awfully bearish that I just like to try the contrarian sentiment indicator and he Hourly chart Drop off the Res at 1.2440 was so steep and extended that a quick bounce to around 1.2280/1.2320 is usually feasible from my observations.
================================

well, ain't that irony my stop was hit 1.2144 and the actual low was 41/42 maybe... and it rallied in no time to 1.24...

think the problem with trading is to make more money on the profitable trades than to lose on the losing ones...

AUD/USD Path To 0.9500 Looks Tough -Goldman Sachs
Reply
Goldman Sachs strategists say their AUD/USD forecasts under review, now saying original mid-year target of 0.9500 looks tough to meet, but 0.9000 in near term still doable. "It is not just risk aversion that is driving the AUD lower at present, fundamental factors have also been very important and the path to lower risk aversion is less dependant on the typical ebb and flow of market sentiment and highly dependent upon the actions of policy makers in Australia and Europe."

Aussie, N.Z. Dollars Gain as Four-Day Plunge Seen Too Rapid
Reply
May 20 (Bloomberg) -- The Australian and New Zealand dollars rose on speculation the currencies plunged too far in the past four days on concerns over Europe’s debt crisis.

Markets Likely To Applaud Expected NZ Tax Changes

Centerpiece of NZ budget due 0200 GMT will be NZ$3 billion income tax package slashing top rate to 33% from 38% which Finance Minister Bill English has flagged will be tax neutral, offset by hiking GST to 15% from 12.5%, removing some property tax deductions. Westpac Bank chief economist Brendan O'Donovan expects markets to welcome measures, so long as Treasury forecasts meet expectations of improved economic growth track, lower deficits and earlier return to surpluses than previous target of fiscal 2016/17. Core deficit for year to June 30, 2011 likely at NZ$6.3 billion, according to Dow Jones poll; expected to shrink to NZ$4.7 billion following year. Economists' median pick is for Treasury to forecast GDP +3.2% in year to March 31, 2011, +3.4% in 2012 vs Treasury's December forecasts of +2.4%, +3.2% respectively.

Mizuho Asset Sells Pounds for Canadian Dollars in Bet on Rates
Reply
May 19 (Bloomberg) -- Mizuho Asset Management Co. sold British pounds and bought Canadian dollars today in a bet interest rates will rise faster in Canada than in the U.K., said Hiromasa Nakamura, a senior investor at the company.

“The British economy is not good,” said Nakamura, who helps oversee the equivalent of $20.7 billion as a senior investor at the unit of Japan’s second-biggest publicly traded bank in Tokyo. “The Bank of England may keep its low interest rates for a long time.”

If the Euro has commenced a 180 Degrees turn, it should reflect a broad turn all over the market. By now it is not that clear.

CHF didn't join, as it was used to fuel and propel up the Euro, while itself lost value.

Every navigator knows that a big ship once turned too fast (as happened with the Euro) may end rotating 360 Degrees back to the original direction.

The bullish wedge on the Euro daily is a good argument for Euro strength continuation, but it may be retested.

There should be lot of losing positions on the way of Euro appreciation, willing just to get out with something, thus slowing down the appreciation if any.

EUR May Bounce Further On Intervention Fear - BNZ
Reply
EUR/USD bounce off 4-year lows may continue as market worries about concerted intervention, says BNZ Bank strategist Mike Jones. Adds sentiment with euro stabilized on rumor based on report from U.S. think tank Medley that G7 unhappy at extent and speed of EUR decline and may intervene on multilateral basis; also aiding EUR comments from German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggesting Greece could shortly be tossed out of euro zone "which would obviously be positive for the euro."

US Fed Declines To Comment On Currency-Market Speculation
Reply
The European Central Bank Wednesday declined to comment on financial market speculation that the ECB and other major central banks are preparing to intervene in the foreign exchange markets to prop up the flagging euro.
The talk comes as traders circulate a report from a U.S. think-tank reportedly noting that the Group of Seven leading industrial nations are concerned about the speed of the euro's decline. The report is also said to note that major central banks may be preparing verbal intervention to support the currency "if the rout continues."

The U.S. Federal Reserve Wednesday declined to comment on speculation that the European Central Bank and other major central banks are preparing to intervene in the foreign-exchange markets to prop up the flagging euro.

The ECB also declined to comment earlier Wednesday. The market speculation comes as traders are circulating a report from a U.S. think tank that is said to note that the Group of Seven leading industrial nations are concerned about the speed of the euro's decline against the U.S. dollar.

20:00 GMT- May 19 (global-view.com) Wednesday has been a volatile session as the markets tried to figure out what Germany is up to. Repeated N.Y. morning spikes in the EURUSD triggered talk of possible silent G7 intervention, but we doubt that. However, the move clearly started in EURCHF which suggested that this was the SNB at work.

$ reversal finally just ahead

This in turn suggests that an eventual upside resolution of the ceiling (currently at 1.2340/60), with potential for at least another 250-300 ticks may be ahead (and maybe much more). Also don’t forget that larger reversals begin with smaller reversals and given the huge decline over the last number of months, suggests that this nearer term upside (if it does indeed occur), may only be the start of a more significant upside (will have to wait and see).

Euro-Zone Spillover To Mexico Won't Last - BBVA
Reply
Debt problems in the euro-zone are weakening Mexican markets--with the stock market down nearly 1% and USD/MXN stronger at 12.8850--but the spillover effect won't last beyond the short term, say economists from BBVA Bancomer. Mexican growth is tied to the US, where an economic recovery is likely to accelerate in the second half of the year thanks to continued government stimulus. Once Europe deals with its problems, the peso is likely to move back toward MXN12 to the dollar, where it could settle by year's end, the economists say.

Yen is facing a cataclysmic appreciation never seen before.

Hello Dennis - just thinking over this and remember what I read on the 1996 Asian crisis - an largely overcrowded trade..

this time around could it be a large scale repatriation since now I assume the JPY is competing for the 'Funding ccy" status with USD and CHF.. a repatriation of this scale might be due to domestic debt problems and btw a strong JPY might act as an Inflation substitute - which is a problem in the same time for an Exporter nation..
just trying to layout some options...

U.S. Consumer Price Index
seen tame. Number doesn't matter now

The CPI is an index designed to measure the change in price of a fixed market basket of goods and services. The market basket of goods and services is representative of the purchases of a typical consumer. Most countries have an alternate measure of inflation where they exclude volatile items, such as food and energy, to arrive at a measure of underlying inflation. Colloquially, this is usually referred to as “core” inflation. Core inflation can be a useful analytical tool.

Many Central banks explicitly target inflation levels. An acceleration or deceleration of inflation may signal that a change in monetary policy might be appropriate.

Greece 'may have to quit Eurozone', warns former head of Germany's central bank
Reply
A former head of Germany’s central bank has warned Greece may have to quit the Eurozone and revert to the drachma.

Karl Otto Poehl, who ran the Bundesbank when the mighty Deutschmark was still in existence, told Der Spiegel magazine that Athens should never have been allowed to join the single currency area.

While Greece is unlikely to leave the euro soon given it is hooked on vast quantities of foreign aid, in the ‘mid and long-term’ it may well turn its back on the euro, he warned.

The short-selling ban introduced by the German financial regulator, BaFin, will only have a moderate impact and the current plunge in equities, bonds and the euro is overdone, says Credit Agricole. The banks says existing positions won't be affected by the ban. .

Rana ... gbpjpy - seems either you have lost the big picture in shortterm stuff (draw the longterm charts in that case - and go with the flow, instead of trying to fight for a few pips against the strong current trend) - or you have a (boj related) agenda.

I also suggest to follow some indices because yen is mostly driven by yields which are driven by indices. That helps to keep the big picture in mind.

Last not least - have you read and keep in mind what I sent ya - rosecast bradley?

Imho charts are as clear as it can get - coming weeks are a lifetime opportunity - if you aren't lost in shortterm stuff.

The big money is not made in shortterm stuff .. but with being in line with the major medium to longterm trends.

Anyway your gbjpy long is way under water now (while those following the flow are dark green) - so thought it is time for a wake-up call my friend.

To be in love with a trade - is to be in love with ones ego.
That can be quite painful.

There is currently an "existential test" for the euro and if the euro fails then the whole of Europe will fail, Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel said Wednesday.

Speaking to the country's lower house of parliament in a speech on the euro rescue plan, Merkel said "the euro is at risk" and the current situation is Europe's "biggest test" in decades.

"If we don't avert this danger then the consequences for Europe are inevitable," Merkel said. "Because if the euro is failing, than Europe is failing."

Poland still plans to cut its fiscal deficit to below 3% of gross domestic product by 2012 despite the euro zone's debt woes, the daily Rzeczpospolita reported Wednesday, citing a deputy finance minister.

Says $1 trillion rescue shows commitment to euro
Volcker calls fluctuations in euro "excessive"
STANFORD, Calif., May 18 (Reuters) - Europe's debt crisis shows the risks for the United States if it does not get its budget deficits under control, former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker said on Tuesday
If we need any further illustration of the potential threats to our own economy from uncontrolled borrowing, we have only to look to the struggle to maintain the common European currency, to rebalance the European economy, and to sustain political cohesion of Europe," Volcker said.
Volcker, a special adviser to President Barack Obama, said many well-developed economies were becoming aware of the hazards of running "unprecedented levels of public debts" as they emerge from the global recession.
"I think these fluctuations, frankly, are excessive," he said.

Volcker, speaking in a separate interview with Bloomberg radio, described the European rescue package as "breathtaking" in size.

The move lower continues and one should continue to look to “SELL” on bounces rather than chasing the breaks especially in Asia time. The break below 1.2330 region now has the 1.1825 level in sight. Divergence is evident on dialy techincals but as yet no sign of a bounce. Weekly technicals also very much oversold but have the ADXR heading sharply higher.

GBP/USD:
GBP heads lower with the ADXR heading skyward and hinting at lower levels to come. For those who has followed and already short, just continue to lower your “stops” at your choice and look to resell ahead of 1.4520 if stopped. Tell you what, a move lower that sees the 24 year low at 1.3500 from Jan 23, 2009 tested is firmly in sights and only a move back above 1.5055 would alter this scenario.

Why all the fuss about Euro collapse and Euro failure? Euro is too strong compared to its levels in October 2000 (0.8225). What EU needs now is a weaker Euro to support their exports and give a boost to their ailing economy. I am sure policy makers in EU and UK are very happy with the correction. GBP is very likely to revisit the lows seen in Jan 2009 (1.3500) as early as July 2010.

Reply
Investec says gold's rebound from Tuesday intraday low of $1,207 came on back of German government's decision to ban naked short-selling of shares in 10 German banks and in certain euro-zone debt and credit default swaps. "To some extent, the surprise announcement was interpreted as another incremental measure treating one of the symptoms of the problems in the euro zone, rather than getting to the direct cause," says note. Gold's recent rally has been negatively correlated with EUR/USD so pair's slump Tuesday pushed gold back up.

Aussie Wages Growth Starts To Edge Up
Reply
Australian wages growth slightly higher than expected in 1Q10, rising 0.9% vs 4Q09 (consensus for 0.8% rise); marks strongest quarterly growth since 4Q08. Data likely to add to concerns at RBA that inflation pressures building, perhaps helped along by workers seeking extra large pay hikes to compensate for pay freezes enforced during global financial crisis. Still, in annual terms, wages up 3.0%, below threshold that would immediately force RBA's hand on interest rates. But it looks likely that low point in wage cycle was some time in late 2009; in 4Q09, wage grew by a more sedate 0.6% over quarter.

Putin says US no better than Greece in handling debt
Reply
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin played down Greece's economic woes on Tuesday, telling his visiting Greek counterpart that the United States were no better than Greece in handling its debt and fiscal deficit.

"As we all know, the global economic crisis started neither in Greece, nor in Russia, nor in Europe," Putin told a news conference after talks with George Papandreou. "It came to us from across the ocean," he said in a clear reference to the United States.

Britain's New Austerity Threatens London Olympics Budget
Reply
The Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition has pledged to make GBP6 billion of savings in its first year as it seeks to chip away at Britain's record GBP163 billion deficit.

Only essential "frontline" services will be spared the knife.

Hunt warned: "Olympic money is not protected. None of the Department of Culture, Media and Sport's budgets are protected and we are looking at all of them and saying: 'Can we make savings without affecting our core services?'"

The provisional budget for the Olympics is now GBP9.3 billion, almost three times the figure set out when London won the right to host the Games in 2005.
