RF,

Jim O'Neill did great calls. I still remember when he was working at Swiss Bank Corp in 1994 and everybody was waiting his small comment on Reuters about his views. Dollar was falling against JPY and DEM at that time due to the commercial war between US and Japan. I remember Mickey Cantor travelling every two days to Tokyo trying to convince the japanese to open there markets.

Well, I think that Jim O'Neil did great calls in the past. He predict the crash of the pound in 2008 also. Obviously, he missed also. Just a comment, nothing else. Gt;gl.

I wrote this nearly a year ago and is is applicable to what we are going through currently. I will update it one day but in the meantime, it is worth a read.

I could also add a section on the eur/usd, explaining the difficulty in supporting a weak currency via injtervention unless accompanied by other measures, such as a hike in interest rates, which is not an option anytime on the horizon in the current enviroment.

DJ MARKET TALK: Euro Falls As Spanish Bank Failure Ignites Fears
2008 GMT The euro fell Monday after worries again flared over
euro-zone economies after Spain over the weekend rescued a small, failing
savings bank. After strengthening last week as investors unwound trades against
the euro, the common currency started the week with traders again piling on
anti-euro bets. The bank failure led some investors to fret the euro-zone's
sovereign debt crisis will spill into the private sector, denting prospects for
a rebound from the global recession. Monday afternoon, the euro was at $1.2403
from $1.2583 late Friday, according to EBS via CQG. The dollar was at Y90.46
from Y89.64, while the U.K. pound was at $1.4449 from $1.4445. The ICE Dollar
Index, which tracks the greenback against a trade-weighted basket of
currencies, was at 86.182 from 85.348.

United Kingdom : EUR/USD: Continues to Slide Talk of SNB Diversification
Mon May 24 12:17:08 2010
EDT
May 24, 2010 (MENA News from Al-Bawaba via COMTEX) -- As Tajul points out, there
is talk in London that the Swiss National Bank may sell Euro today for
diversification purposes. As we all know they have accrued Euros by the
truckload this month trying to keep the CHF weak. In Asia when this happens the
central bank ships out the unwanted US Dollars as fast as they buy them. Any
move by the SNB to disburse their Euro would result in a massive fall in
EUR/USD. As this would send EUR/CHF down as well one susp ects the SNB is stuck
with his Euro holdings perhaps for some time to come.

DJ Ex-IMF Economist: Greece May Yet Face Debt Restructuring

MUMBAI (Dow Jones)--Greece must undergo "immense belt-tightening" to avoid the possibility of debt restructuring despite the European bailout, a former International Monetary Fund chief economist said Monday.
"The betting in the market by most sensible observors is some time down the line, Greece will have to restructure", Raghuram Rajan told reporters at the sidelines of an event.
Market watchers have interpreted the EUR110 billion bailout sponsored by the EU and International Monetary Fund as time buying device which doesn't fix structural problems.
According to the IMF, Greece would cut its budget deficit from a massive 13.6% of GDP last year to 8.1% this year, and below a European Union ceiling of 3% by the end of 2014.
Some argue that even if Greece toes the line in implementing the cutbacks required, its economic growth over the coming few years won't be enough to avoid a future debt default.
"What the European bailout package for Greece has done is to some extent bought some time if in fact the re-structuring is on the cards", Rajan noted.
According to IMF estimates, Greece's debt load will grow from 133% of GDP this year to 149% in 2013.
Rajan also said that the Chinese yuan can't become an international currency until the country allows it to appreciate.
"Ultimately for that currency to become international currency they need to first allow it to reach its true parity value which means the reminbi has to appreciate", Rajan said.
China has been under pressure from the U.S to un-peg the yuan from the dollar and to let it appreciate according to market forces.
While this may be eventually happen, such a change may take some time, Rajan noted.

USD/JPY moved higher following the Libor fixing to test the 90.50 area. However, sentiment remained fixated on the European peripheral situation ahead of Spanish and Portugal debt auctions later this week.

May 24 (global-view.com) There is a strong consensus on the outlook on where the EURUSD will close on Friday (May 28) in Europe. Responses remain bearish on the pair, with the vast majority looking for a close between 1.2300 and 1.2500. Very few see it higher. The dominant factor expected to influence trade in the EURUSD was the European debt situation again and a fear of a growing European debt contagion. A

China and the U.S. support the measures taken by European countries so far to deal with the crisis.

He said the global economy will likely maintain the pace of its recovery despite the euro-zone crisis.

Positive talks between U.S. Treasury Secretary Geithner and Chinese officials in Beijing has raised speculation of an imminent CNY revaluation. The AUD's Recovery Will Come
Reply
Like the canary in the coalmine, the AUD has fallen off its perch. A blast of fetid air from the global financial crisis knocked it out. But that doesn't mean the Australian dollar won't be singing again. The fundamentals in the Australian economy remain strong and once global investors have regained their confidence and market liquidity has improved, the AUD will be back on its feet again.

Strongest new car sales figure in a decade
NEW motor vehicle sales surged 8.4 per cent in April, the biggest monthly increase in nearly a decade.
Buoyed by the strongest recorded sales of four-wheel drives, new motor vehicle sales rose 28.7 per cent in the year to April, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said today.
The resources rich state of Western Australia led the charge, recording a 26.7 per cent jump in new vehicle sales in April to post a whopping 47 per cent annual increase in sales
We're still seeing job security is a key factor that's driving passenger car sales and SUV sales are currently at record highs since the data was first introduced in 1994

Bounce Back For AUD/USD Has More Room To Go-Dealer
Reply
After heavy morning selling, AUD/USD bounces on heels of Asian equity gains, with Tony Darvall, senior dealer with Easy Forex saying there may be more room to run. AUD/USD recently at 0.8293, up from morning low of 0.8191. "Risk appetite is flowing through the market and the Aussie dollar is responding to that. After testing below 0.82, everything is quite buoyant and more likely to go higher than lower," says Darvall. Still, dealer says top-side resistance sits close at 0.8350.

(RTTNews) - Asian stock markets are mostly trading higher on Monday amid speculation the Chinese government will ease tightening measures

Senior officials from the United States and China have begun talks on economic and security issues in Beijing. The two countries have also been embroiled in a series of trade disputes, with the U.S. accusing China of keeping its currency, the yuan, artificially low to boost exports.

PIMCO Says Targeting Emerging Market, Australian Debt
Reply
The Australian unit of Pacific Investment Management Co., the world's largest bond fund, is buying debt from emerging markets such as Russia, Brazil and Mexico and Australia as part of its strategy to counter volatility in global bond markets.
At the core of its outlook are bets on a robust recovery in emerging markets while developed markets enjoy only a tepid growth trend.
While emerging markets can expect to enjoy high savings rates, no debt bubbles and capacity for extra government spend if necessary, developed economies will be crimped by high jobless rates, deleveraging, greater regulation and de-globalization, John Wilson, chief executive of PIMCO Australia said.
The fund is overweight AAA rated tranches of Australian residential mortgage-backed securities and is also targeting corporate debt from utilities, consumer staples and natural gas pipelines.

"We're investing in emerging market debt and are focusing on countries such as Brazil, Mexico and Russia. Retaining holdings of Australian inflation-linked debt and well capitalized financial institutions such as the big four Australian banks will also drive returns," Wilson said.

EUR/USD: SELL on rally as downtrend still intact
I continue to look to play from the “SHORT” side with daily techs having worked their way back to levels that are primed for the next move lower.
Note: 1.2800 is the line in the sand topside with a break higher bringing the 1.3100 level back into focus.
But look at the present, as long as 1.2800 not breached, the trend targets at 1.1825 and then 1.1640.
Also note: The past few days, large unwinding of AUD/EUR (Sell AUD buy EUR) on risk averse was seen, and was one of the reasons holding up EUR. I do not know how much more or longer this will continue. Just watch the market carefully.

GBP/USD: SELL on bounces if there is any at all
At a time now after a few hundred pips down, and same situation as EUR/USD, it is absolutely normal that the market condition will be one which will see weak shorts taking profits on minor things happening (rhetoric from bears). However, both are still inside the “down-trend-channel” until otherwise. Daily ups-and-downs- are normal with FX movements all the time otherwise there is no FX. All you need is “FAITH” as I mentioned in the title of this article and brave to act when there is a reasonable bounce.
Move back towards the 24 years low at 1.3500 is on the cards and continues with daily tech studies having worked their way out of oversold territory as cable whips around in its recent 1.4225- 1.4545 range. I will look to sell bounces back towards the 1.4545 resistance level definitely and stopping on a move above 1.4640. While 1.4640 caps target the 1.3500 level overall.
