16:00 GMT- May 28 (global-view.com) As expected, forex trading on Friday was relatively restrained heading into three-day weekends in the U.S. and U.K. A further constraint on trade was the price correction in key markets in the latter half of the current week. This correction saw EUR gains pretty much across the board on many of its major crosses.

Asia's economy isn't going to see a double-dip recession, says Frederic Neumann of HSBC, although it will slow for sure. "Why? Three answers. Inventories are lean, so another nasty supply chain compression isn't on the cards. Also, monetary conditions are far more supportive now. Lastly domestic demand, not exports, is the driver this time," he says.

Long AUD/USD Most Attractive G10 Trade - Danske

The risky assets selloff has seen in significant 10% downside correction in AUD/USD notes Danske bank. However when benchmarked against the relative cyclical position of the Australian economy and the outlook for domestic monetary policy this move looks overdone. Danske says from a risk-reward perspective long AUD/USD is the most attractive risk normalisation trade among the G10 currencies. Danske favors buying the spot at 0.85 with a stop loss at 0.83 and an upside target of 0.89.

@ Some commentators on Friday said the downgrade was not unexpected, and drew comfort from positive comments from the agency about Spain's sovereign credit profile remaining strong and its sound financial sector.
"The stable outlook should be a good sign, it shows the situation is only worth a downgrade, but this is about as good as the bad news is going to get," said Dirk Schnitker, a Madrid-based analyst at CM Capital Markets Bolsa.

Moody's is the only agency that has not downgraded Spanish sovereign credit rating and still gives it a rating of AAA.

Belgrade TD 17:45 GMT May 28, 2010
Spains news release

NEW YORK, May 28 (Reuters) - The euro fell across the board on Friday after Fitch Ratings downgraded Spain's credit ratings on concern that austerity measures will dampen the country's economic recovery.
The euro was on track for a hefty 7.5 percent decline in May, in what would be the sixth consecutive monthly fall and the biggest percentage drop since January 2009.
Fitch cut Spain's long-term foreign- and local-currency issuer default ratings to AA-plus from AAA, saying the country's economic recovery will be "more muted" than the government forecast due to its austerity measures. The outlook on the new ratings is stable. For more, see [ID:nWNA2365]
"There are still some strong concerns about the euro," said Samarjit Shankar, managing director of global FX strategy at BNY Mellon in Boston.
"In the grand scheme of things, this is pretty much expected," Shankar said of the downgrade.
The euro fell as low as $1.2284 after the Fitch downgrade, according to electronic trading platform EBS, near a session low. It recovered slightly to last trade down 0.5 percent at $1.2301 .
Analysts said a key support level is $1.2135, the 50 percent Fibonacci retracement of the 2000-08 advance, just above the recent four-year low of $1.2143. Charts further show a monthly close below $1.2135 would favor more weakness, with analysts seeing the next downside support at $1.1640, a low hit in November 2005.
Dan Cook, senior market analyst at IG Markets in Chicago, said the downgrade came on a day "when the market is already paper thin, so we may not see the full effect until we open after the weekend."
Against the yen, the euro was down 0.8 percent at 111.72 yen , after hitting an intraday low of 111.40 on EBS.
The dollar slipped 0.2 percent to 90.84 yen, while the dollar index <.DXY>, which measures the greenback's performance against a basket of currencies, was up 0.5 percent at 86.592.
Analysts said concerns about the euro zone's debt troubles remain entrenched.
Shaun Osborne, chief currency strategist at TD Securities in Toronto, cited a heavy debt auction schedule ahead in the euro zone and some lumpy government bond redemptions over the next few months, which could turn the market's focus to Italy.
"While Italy may not be aw structurally vulnerable as Greece or Portugal, the relative underperformance of Italian credit default swaps this month suggests that investor concerns may be rotating away from Greece," Osborne said.

Spain downgrade

@ Fitch downgraded Spain's Long-term foreign and local currency Issuer Default Ratings to 'AA+' from 'AAA'. The rating Outlooks on both Long-term IDRs are Stable. "The downgrade reflects Fitch's assessment that the process of adjustment to a lower level of private sector and external indebtedness will materially reduce the rate of growth of the Spanish economy over the medium-term," says Brian Coulton , Fitch's Head of EMEA Sovereign Ratings.

ha man thnx - now I trade Futures via CFDs but the volatility is such a great teacher - and now that I have my first big moves I see that with right size even little when you are holding it's ok..

it is silly how long time it took me to realize that problem is not losing but holding to winners and that is just realization as I have good entries but don't hold them - I was short 1.2440 today in EUR and took only 30 pips - that's just to illustrate..

So far, the "safety" sectors are outperforming the "risk" sectors. This is a reversal of yesterday's action. The better performers on the day after the first half-hour of trading are Utilities (XLU), Consumer Staples (XLP), and Health Care (XLV). The worst performers are Energy (XLE), Materials (XLB), and Financials (XLF), which were yesterday's out-performers.

Personal Income

Personal income is defined as the income that is received by persons from participation in production, from both government and business transfer payments, and from government interest (which is treated like a transfer payment). It is calculated as the sum of wage and salary disbursements, other labor income, proprietors'' income with inventory valuation and capital consumption adjustments, rental income of persons with capital consumption adjustment, personal dividend income, personal interest income, and transfer payments to persons, less personal contributions for social insurance.

U.S. Core PCE price index
The Core PCE price index is defined as personal consumption expenditures (PCE) prices excluding food and energy.

IMPACT: Core PCE is said to be the preferred inflation measure of the Fed and therefore is a very significant release in that it can influence policy. It is thought the Fed targets core PCE loosely between 2.0% and 3.0%.

Hon Hai to raise China wages after spate of suicides
By Jonathan Standing
updated 1:15 a.m. ET May 28, 2010

TAIPEI - Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry plans to raise workers' salaries by about 20 percent at its Foxconn unit in China, as it struggles to stop a spate of worker suicides and quell rising public anger.

An employee of Foxconn, maker of Apple Inc's iPhone, jumped to his death late on Wednesday, bringing the total of such apparent suicides to 10 this year.

Another employee attempted to slit his wrists, but survived with medical attention, Xinhua news agency said late on Thursday.
....
"It may help the suicide situation, because we workers just need money and the financial pressure on us is great," said a Foxconn employee surnamed Wang, reached by telephone at the company's factory in Longhua, an industrial town north of Shenzhen. "Every little bit helps."

The spate of deaths has thrown a spotlight on the labor practices of Foxconn, whose clients include Dell Inc, Hewlett Packard Co and Sony Ericsson.

Practically as one looks on the hourly chart(EURO), there is no significant Res. up to 1.2671.

Once this one is taken the price may have an unperturbed run to 1.3093.
A simple calculation based on the hourly channel breach( if that will be sustainable) gives 1.3065 as target.

Good comparison over that range.

This correction has seen the EUR gain pretty much across the board on its major crosses.

European Stocks Nudge Higher; Concerns Ease
Reply
LONDON (Dow Jones)--European stock markets have nudged a little higher Friday, with Wall Street's rally Thursday offering support as worries start to ease over Europe's debt situation.
Still, risk assets continue to demonstrate very choppy and occasionally counter-intuitive price action on the final trading day of the week before the prolonged U.K. and U.S. weekend, said Kenneth Broux, senior market economist at Lloyds Banking Group. Nonetheless, the oversold rebound is underway, lifting global equity indexes off their accelerated lows, said J Wong, analyst at Investors Intelligence. And "with our global economists believing that this economic recovery is sustainable, we expect the current growth scare associated with this correction will pass," added Morgan Stanley. On this basis, Morgan Stanley said the prognosis for stocks over the next year is good, especially given recent events are likely to delay the onset of monetary tightening in many regions around the world.

DJ South Australia Mining Minister: Optimistic Canberra Will Alter Proposed Resource Tax

MELBOURNE (Dow Jones)--South Australia state's Mineral Resources Development Minister Paul Holloway said Friday he was optimistic the federal government would alter its proposed Resource Super Profits Tax. Speaking after a meeting with his federal counterpart, Resources and Energy Minister Martin Ferguson, and other state mining ministers in Melbourne, Holloway said fixing "design issues" in the tax proposal was a priority. "Look, we'd be wasting our time if we were talking to them (otherwise)," he told Dow Jones Newswires after the meeting.
"Obviously they're not going to say at this stage exactly what they're going to do.

Cost of funding in Australia's interbank market won't be following path of USD Libor given interventionist central bank, resilient underlying economy. Biggest reason Australia's short term funding market relaxed is RBA; central bank's proactive, no-nonsense approach has stood Australia's banking network well. Also, strong economic fundamentals, sense country remains protected against events in Europe also helping; Australia has much going for it right now, ranging from strong demand for its services, mining exports to flexible and responsive internal policy framework. Yield spread between Australian 3-month bank bill swap rate, overnight index swap has traded reasonably narrow range, last around 39 bps. Spread traded peak of 110 bps in October 2008, unlikely to revisit those levels in hurry.

China Official: China Economy Won't Experience Double Dip
Reply
China Official: 2010 3% CPI Rise Target Achievable But Difficult

China's target of keeping the rise in the consumer price index within 3% this year "can be achieved, but with difficulty," partly because of high imported inflation, Yao Jingyuan, chief economist of China's National Bureau of Statistics, said Friday.

He also said China's economy will not experience a "double dip" this year.

Speaking at a forum in Shanghai, Yao said the country's appetite for overseas commodities was the source of the imported inflation, while higher fruit and vegetable prices and rising utilities prices are adding to the price pressure.

"Another factor is people's strong expectations that inflation will soar, which may result in hoarding, and that will lead to a squeeze in supply and consequently higher prices," Yao said.

Euro surges broadly on short-covering after China's denial

Euro rose sharply across the board on Thursday as investors' worry was eased after China and Kuwait refuted media reports that they would reduce their holdings in eurozone sovereign bonds due to the European debt crisis.

Euro drew support as the People's Bank of China said a Financial Times (FT) report which claimed that Beijing was concerned about its eurozone exposure was groundless. China Investment Corp President Gao Ziqing reiterated that the China's $300 billion sovereign wealth fund would not cut its investments in Europe and it would focus on long-term investments and not be distracted by short-term market volatility. The Kuwait Investment Authority also reiterated it is a long-term investor in Europe while South Korea's central bank said it had no plan to reduce euro assets in its foreign reserves.

Despite euro's initial weakness to 1.2154 in Australia, the euro rebounded on Thursday after China's denial of the previous FT report. This brought return of risk appetite and European and US stocks rose sharply on that news. Euro picked up more upward momentum after triggering stops above 1.2221 and surged to 1.2343 in European morning on active short-covering. Although the single currency then pared some of the gains and retreated strongly to 1.2204, the pair subsequently rallied from there and hit 1.2395 in NY afternoon on strength in European and US stocks as FTSE 100, CAC 40 and DAX all closed up by more than 3% while DJI rose by 2.85% and ended the day above 10,000 points at 10,258.99. Euro also drew support on long liquidation of dollar after the speculation of strong dollar demand for the London fixing failed to materialize later. In other news, St. Louis Federal Reserve President James Bullard said European debt worries helped drive down long-term U.S. yields and he did not expect contagion from Europe's fiscal problems to the United States and instead, the US might actually benefit from a 'flight and safety'. Euro later retreated from said high and ended the day at 1.2360.

The British pound rose in tandem with euro on Thursday and active cross buying in sterling especially versus euro (eur/gbp tumbled from 0.8510 to 0.8422) lifted cable to 1.4587 before retreating again. However, cable managed to rebound from 1.4405/10 in tandem with euro and rallied to 1.4608 in NY afternoon. In other news, listed insurer Prudential said there was no change to its bid for AIA and cable was once pressured briefly by the news. In addition, U.K. CBI retail sales balance came in at -18.0 in May, the lowest since March 2009, much weaker than economists' forecast of 12.0 and well below 13.0 in April.

Versus the Japanese yen, the greenback traded with a firm undertone throughout the day. The pair managed to edge higher after rebounding from Wednesday's NY low of 89.81 and despite brief retreat after release of weaker-than-expected US data, renewed buying interest lifted price again and the dollar eventually rose to 91.09 in US afternoon. On economic front, U.S. Q1 GDP rose by 3.0% (economists' forecast was 3.4%) whilst Q1 PCE price index increased by 1.5% which is the same as economist's forecast. U.S. initial jobless claims increased to 460K, more than economists' expectation of 455K.

Investors returned to buy assets linked to growth as China's denial boosted risk appetite. Gold price rose to 1218.10 from 1206.10 while oil price also jumped by about 4% and posted its biggest two-day gain since mid-August. U.S. crude futures for July delivery settled to $3.04 higher at $74.55 per barrel. Aud/usd also rose to 0.8531 from 0.8202 while nzd/usd jumped to 0.6859 from 0.6629 and usd/cad dropped from 1.0706 to 1.0481.

Economic data to be released on Friday include: Japan household spending, National CPI, Tokyo CPI, unemployment, retail sales, Germany CPI, HICP, import price, Swiss trade balance, kof indicator, U.S. PCE, personal income, Chicago PMI, University of Michigan's survey and Canada Current account.
