DJ Japan Importers May Buy USD/JPY Actively -Dealer
Reply
As USD/JPY trades near 7-month low level, Japan importers likely to take advantage of chance to settle their accounts, meaning USD/JPY to be supported somewhat in Asian hours, says senior dealer at major trading firm in Tokyo. "The dollar at Y87-levels is very attractive for importers, such as oil companies. The bias for the dollar/yen is clearly negative, but we may not see a sharp decline in the dollar in Asia," he says. Adds exporters in no hurry to sell USD/JPY because they've hedged against sharp USD-decline for current quarter.

MNI summery describes day quite well. if you put name behing who did what and when then picture turns more clear .
and one more thing, there was huge interest today earlier in the european hours before NYC started to buy short term euro options with strikes 1.2500 and higher.

MNI: EURO SUMMARY: Opened at $1.2322 after $1.2194/1.2343 overnight range.
-- Euro had found buyers under $1.2200 overnight and strength had
extended in European hours despite some concerns over ECB funding ops,
and euro wasted little time in pressing back to overnight highs amid
talk of a New York name a conspicuous buyer. Euro settled back to
$1.2320 before spiking higher on weak jobless claims data, losses
accelerating as stops were triggered above $1.2350/60. A brief pause at
$1.2400 resolved higher with steady gains to $1.2450 around the London
fixing. Further lift, aided by a spike in both euro-Swiss and euro-yen,
saw euro push to $1.2485 before reversing ahead of the London close,
chatter reminding of protection of $1.2500 option strikes. Euro
retreated to $1.2450 in early afternoon as stocks pared losses, but
later rebounded to near $1.2500 and stalled. The euro broke $1.25 ahead
of the stock close, topping out at $1.2540 ($1.2530 at 4:20 pm EDT).
The close over $1.25 targets $1.2560, the highs from May 24 and then
$1.2672 the highs from May 21.

Lots of talk that fund managers today had been liquidating positions (short EUR) and gold (long gold) to raise cash to cover losses elsewhere. Otherwise there is no good explanation for the price action. Economic data was a good reason to pile on. I am expecting a quiet market into U.S. data tomorrow. Odds are traders will try to repeat today, but that could leave them a day late and a dollar short.

Any other scenarios? Not sure what to do overnight.

20:00 GMT- July 1 (global-view.com) We were surprised by the extent of the market reaction to U.S. economic data on Thursday. Both the June ISM manufacturing PMI and weekly jobless claims were considerably weaker than expected. The data came on the heels of a string of poor reports from the U.S. recently which suggest that the rebound in the economy might have paused.

The greenback is under pressure as the market focuses on the string of softer US data over the last few sessions. Today's initial jobless claims have shown no sign of any downtrend while the weaker ISM Manufacturing is only adding concerns that the phrase "double-dip" is returning to the market's vocabulary.

Data @ 14:00 GMT-
Purchasing Managers Index – Manufacturing

Most major economies have purchasing managers indices (PMI) released monthly. They are compiled by various organizations. Some focus on the manufacturing sector while others measure the service sector. They are a very current measure of the economic health of the manufacturing or services sector. The PMI indices are usually based on five major indicators: new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and the employment environment.

A PMI of greater than 50 represents expansion, compared to the previous month. A reading under 50 represents a contraction, while a reading at 50 indicates no change.

We find the PMI indices to be useful predictors of future economic activity.

Pending Homes Sales

The Pending Homes sales index is produced monthly by the NAR. Pending Home Sales become Existing-Home Sales one-to-two months later.

The index derived from Pending Home Sales is used to predict Existing Home Sales, which is the most important U.S. housing statistic.

Construction Spending

The Construction Spending data is a monthly report that report on the amount of construction spending for home building, which is the major component of the report. In addition to residential spending, the data also tracks spending on government projects and office buildings.

California budget deadline passes without a budget
No deal between Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and state legislators was imminent. State employees and others who depend on government money brace for the fallout.

By Shane Goldmacher, Los Angeles Times

July 1, 2010

Reporting from Sacramento — California begins a new budget year Thursday without a spending plan in place and with no agreement imminent between state legislators and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on how to close a $19.1-billion deficit.

State employees and others who depend on government money were bracing Wednesday for the possible fallout. Thousands of state workers took to the Capitol steps, protesting spending cuts and the governor's threat to slash their pay. Community colleges and vendors that do business with the state are on edge, their payments in jeopardy because of the budget delay.

And California's top finance officials warned of further reductions in the state's already woeful credit ratings on Wall Street.

Data @ 12:30 GMT
Weekly jobless data
See a disappointing 455K in initial jobless claims vs. 457K

Weekly jobless data are the most current read on employment and also the economy.

Initial Jobless claims can be very volatile so many also watch the 4-week moving average to get a better handle on trends.

Continuing claims are used by economists to predict the unemployment rate. These data are not as consistent as they once were as statutory benefit rules have been changing. Changes in the rules can affect the number of individuals eligible for claims.

Updated and revised charts to follow after the report.

This is for those Traders with some/little experience. Yesterday I went long EURJPY @ 109.30 the market move against me some 30 pips ... no problem and I put my stop in @ 108.40 .. so far so good .. @ minus 30 easy... the market then moved up but not quite to where I could close out I'm still minus 15/20 pips... but during news periods I am safe .. Yeah...

The US news came out ....I thought I was safe locked in @ minus 20/25 .... except the market went down so fast and furious .. what had I forgotten to do?
I HAD FORGOTTEN to remove my stop loss on the long leg of the trade... bam went down hit my Long leg SL @ minus 80/90 pips.... now I'm naked with my short leg ... no problem except I have a broker that during news period hits me with 11 requotes to close my short leg of the trade ending up .... losing 70/80 pips in all...

Moral of the story....get an NDD broker and dont forget to take off your SL when hedged...

I made a very stupid mistake....

California's missed budget deadline means school districts, local governments, state vendors and elected leaders will not be paid, starting Thursday.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has threatened to cut state workers' pay to minimum wage to save money while lawmakers struggle with the late budget, drawing howls of protest during Wednesday's SEIU rally.

"It has a lot of this thinking, what is the state coming to? We can't live. I'm barely making it now. If I take a pay cut I would be losing everything. I already lost the house," said state worker Freddie Gonzalez.

Assembly Speaker John Perez and Senate pro tem Darrel Steinberg briefed Governor Schwarzenegger on Wednesday on the new Democratic agreement on a budget proposal

Aussie Mining Tax Report A Big Industry Win -Analyst
Reply
A reported deal between the mining industry and the Australian government on a revised mining tax looks to be a major win for the industry, Morgan Stanley analyst Craig Campbell says. The Age newspaper, without citing sources, says the government has agreed to increase the rate at which the tax kicks in to about 12%, to exclude nickel mining from the regime and to rework the treatment of depreciation of assets. Campbell says this last concession would be very significant, as it would allow miners with older assets that had been largely written down to claim deductions based on depreciation from the market value of their assets rather than the book value. This would benefit BHP Billiton (BHP.AU) and Rio Tinto (RIO.AU) for their decades-old iron ore operations as well as thermal coal producers like Xstrata (XTA.LN) and Centennial Coal (CEY.AU), who Campbell says would be big winners from such a change. Campbell says it still remains to be seen if the government has budged on the 40% rate of the tax and this remains key for base metals projects, which were at risk from the original proposal.

Hi Alimin. Quite a brave soul. Price is at its all time low my friend. I cannot see a base nor a reliable bottom to go long. Anyway, may the market be with you first before its time to sell again.

Data show same slowing trend as China's official CFLP PMI for June issued earlier, which hit 52.1, down vs May's 53.9. Data could spook markets, but also could allay some concerns of further tightening moves; note, China Premier Wen said this week domestic economy moving in expected direction of macro controls. "The moderation in the manufacturing PMI implies slower sequential growth in China's manufacturing sector, partly due to the tightening measures taking effect. But fears about hard-landing are overplayed. We expect China to achieve around 9% growth in 2H underpinned by massive ongoing investment and robust private consumption," HSBC Chief Economist for China Hongbin Qu says.

China's Purchasing Managers Index fell to 52.1 in June from 53.9 in May, the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, which issues the data with the statistics agency, said.

Despite June's fall from the previous month, it was the 16th straight month the PMI has stayed above the expansionary threshold of 50.

Why house prices must fall by 28 per cent

It was a half a billion position not loss. It was a 9.7 mio loss i.e.less than 2% of the face value i.e. a normal daily trading range of which he was insignificant not some ability to affect global oil prices.
"Ten times the usual volume of futures contracts changed hands in just one hour." is mischievous lining of the facts because it suggests that this was due to this relative pipsqueak. This is quite obviously the other way around, It was because it was obviously a busy night in which he was trying to swim with the tide/momentum but......... he got it wrong. Obviously a small firm with little controls in place. I guess they regret not spending money on that part of the business.
