16:00 GMT- Aug 6 (global-view.com) U.S. and Canadian jobs reports released early in North America were both disappointing. The U.S. report lacked any hint of a fundamental pickup in hiring. Canadian data were weaker than expected. While some blamed this on technical distortions in the data, others cited some important underlying deficiencies in the data. The U.S. data were critical because the sluggishness of the U.S. economy is expected to be the primary topic of discussion at the FOMC meeting next week.

no desire to convince ... if we all know that the level of about 85, very important for the further movement of prices, it seems to me that in terms of MM and risks, is correct to wait for the market decide where it will continue. If you make a name 85 (confirmed) it is a clear signal - sell. Given that we are few tenth pips above that level and that there is "fear" of BOJ intervention, my thinking is that dangerous to enter the sell here where we are ... but I repeat it is individually ... as I already said, this is only the USD/JPY pair ...

I'm just kidding, 101 is out of question (at least for now) ... Rana is right, all TA pointing lower in this moment, but it not necessary meant that we go down, especially at this level ... anyway from my point of view, it is less risky to buy at lower level, and vice versa, but to do it somewhere in the middle. That's why I keep my long position in the USD/JPY and Dollar (index) ... but it simply does not say anything except that it was my way of trading, which definitely is not always successful ... GLGT

Every broker (ICAP etc) and major trading system has stated trading volume to have been down 10% in June and July. Here we are in August with major major levels being tested in seasonally thin markets following unseasonal thin markets. Any level wouldn't surpise me until commonsense prevails. As ever it's a matter of timing so if you're long dollars (as I am - sold my last tranche of cable @ 1.60ish and + USDYen @ 85ish) it may be time to blank your mind and go on hols!

The US payrolls data is the story this morning, with risk aversion picking up noticeably following the report. The headline non-farm payrolls decline was more than twice the expected amount, although the government letting census workers go comprises a good part of that gain.

JP. We all need some luck in this business and I do not like to criticize positions that are underwater. What is underwater at one time could float to the surface at another time.

It looks like gbpusd 1.60 and usdjpy 85.00 are keeping this market from running too far.

problem with the EUR and GBP is that this growth is caused by weak USD and not the positive economic situation. Greece and Spain have yet to show their weakness on the UK I will not speak. Consumption in the EU is small, only export growth as a result of weak euro in the previous period. The EU is certainly not happy with lack of strong dollars and the next indication of the eco. state will give a weaker export ... All in all, perhaps now is not the right day to buy dollars but looking at the upcoming month, it's not a bad idea ...
We are at the famous 85 yen level, possible further decline. Japan is no longer so powerful to aggressively defend this level, but will certainly trying to change something ... will see :)

Canadian Ivey PMI
Purchasing Managers Index

Most major economies have purchasing managers indices (PMI) released monthly. They are compiled by various organizations. Some focus on the manufacturing sector while others measure the service sector. They are a very current measure of the economic health of the manufacturing or services sector. The PMI indices are usually based on five major indicators: new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and the employment environment.

A PMI of greater than 50 represents expansion, compared to the previous month. A reading under 50 represents a contraction, while a reading at 50 indicates no change.

We find the PMI indices to be useful predictors of future economic activity.

It was told that any blip against the USD after the random number is a great entry for USD longs. The number is random. The outcome for the markets is not. I'm to say this has been a time to buy USD. That outcome will show itself later a case to have been made to NOT react in direction of random number but to use it to your benefit because USD with strengthen regardless.

Hello to all,
may I ask for your opinion on USD/CZK?
As the move from Nov 2009 low at 16.87 to June 2010 high at 21.92 seems to create bigger corrective pattern, the correction from June 2010 high to current level which is also 61.8% fibo retracement of the previous up move seems to be done and we are in for accumulation of USD/CZK for another leg up (just MHO).
Any idea/advice on that?

Summer Lull Hits Currencies Trading In July
Reply
Global currency trading volumes shrank by almost 12% from June to July, judging by the two main interbank trading systems' flows, illustrating the scale of the traditional summer slowdown in activity. Thomson Reuters said in a statement Thursday that trading flows over all of its currency-dealing systems shrank by 13% to $124 billion in July from June.
That shift in flows, which encompass its key bank-to-bank trading business, is mirrored by ICAP PLC owned EBS, which said its July volumes were down by 10% on the month, at $133.2 billion. Slowdowns such as this are a typical temporary feature of the summer months. Looking ahead, market participants are keenly awaiting the triennial survey of currrency-trading volumes from the Bank for International Settlements, due later in August. When this benchmark survey was last released in 2007, the BIS put the size of the market at $3.2 trillion a day.

U.S. Employment Report Preview -- @ 12:30 GMT

"...It is a key week for US data, culminating with the publication of July payrolls report. The reversal of temporary hiring related to Census 2010 is expected to result in the second successive month of falling payrolls in July.

We look for a decline of 55,000, coming on the back of a fall of 125,000 in June. However, particular interest will be paid to the change in private payrolls, which we expect to be +120,000 – the highest for two months but still well below April (241,000). The unemployment rate is forecast to edge up 0.1% to 9.6% in July, while average earnings growth is likely to have remained subdued..."

Canadian Employment Data / Unemployment Rate
Could impact markets as Bank of Canada policy tightening has slowed

Employment is a monthly estimate of the number of payroll jobs and government agencies. The rate of unemployment is released along with this report.

Impact: Growth of employment provides important information about the current and likely future pace of overall economic growth and future monetary policy. Most analysts prefer to watch the employment data rather than the unemployment rate, which is also impacted by changes to the labor force (denominator of the ratio).

Other statistics watched are the breakdown between full and part-time jobs and the labor participation rate.

Wheat prices soar as Russia bans grain exports
Reply
With one-fifth of Russia's farmland destroyed by drought and wildfire, Prime Minister Putin has banned grain exports. The move, intended to keep domestic food costs down, has caused a spike in global wheat prices.

Global wheat prices soared Thursday after Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced a four-and-a-half month ban on grain exports. With a fifth of the country's arable land destroyed by drought and fire, the move is intended to keep domestic food prices down.

Putin announced the ban at a cabinet meeting Thursday, saying it was a necessary step to protect Russian consumers from price hikes, despite the country's reserves of 9.5 million tons.

"We must not allow an increase in domestic prices and must preserve the headcount of our cattle," Putin said on state television in defense of the ban, which applies to barley, rye and corn, as well as wheat and other flours.

Record heat wave

The export moratorium is set to take effect on August 15 and last until the end of the year. Russia also asked Belarus and Kazakhstan, fellow members of a regional customs union, to make a similar move.

Russia's worst droughts in 130 years, along with wildfires that have claimed 50 lives, have decimated 10 million hectares (24.7 million acres) of Russian farmland.

Temperatures in the world's third-largest wheat exporter reached 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) Thursday - and were expected to remain very high.

Russia earlier this week slashed its 2010 grain harvest forecast to 70-75 million tons. In 2009 it harvested 97 million tons.

The country's decision to ban grain exports sent the price of wheat soaring to its highest level in two years. The price had already risen considerably since early June, seeing its biggest one-month jump in three decades due to droughts in Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan and low harvest in Canada.

November milling wheat futures also shot up by 8.25 for the day on the Euronext securities exchange Thursday after Putin's announcement.

:Aussie Greens Mull Tough Climate, Tax Action-FOCUS
Reply
Australia's environmentalist Greens Party could be kingmaker in the Senate after the Aug. 21 election, a scenario analysts say could see the Greens seeking tougher laws on environmental protection and higher taxes on big business; opinion polls point to the Greens winning as many as seven seats, up from five now, in an upper house that is unlikely to be controlled outright by either main party, no matter who wins government in the House of Representatives. If the Labor government wins a second term, the Greens' likely improved position opens the potential for horse-trading over key policies, including Labor's controversial mining-profits proposal. The Greens object to a deal brokered by PM Gillard with the country's major miners last month that reduced the proposed headline tax to 30% from 40% and excluded all minerals except iron ore and coal.

Australia's July Performance Of Construction Index Falls 3.1 Pts To 43.3
Reply
Australia's construction sector continued to contract in July, hampered by weak customer demand and strong competition for new projects, a performance gauge produced by an industry group published Friday shows. The Australian Industry Group/Housing Industry Association Performance of Construction Index fell 3.1 points to a reading of 43.3 in July, well below the 50 point mark separating contraction from expansion. Home builders also blamed the weaker activity on tighter credit and weaker first home owner demand.
"Consumer and business caution is detracting from demand across the industry as suggested by declines in activity and new orders," Australian Industry Group Director of Public Policy Peter Burn said. "This, together with the dampening impacts on the construction industry of the continued unwinding of public sector spending and higher interest rates, is slowing the momentum of recovery in the broader economy," he said.

Dollar weakens against the yen on weak U.S. jobs data

Dollar fell against the Japanese yen on Thursday, as disappointing U.S. jobs data added concerns over the speed of U.S. economic recovery.

Despite dollar's brief rise to 86.46 against the Japanese yen, the greenback fell from said intra-day high on heavy selling and risk aversion activities of yen buying as N.Z. posted higher-than-expected unemployment rate (actual Q2 6.8% versus forecast of 6.2%), the pair retreated to 86.01 in Asian mid-day before staging a recovery on short-covering, however, usd/jpy dropped again and penetrated below 86.00 after the release of worse-than-expected U.S. jobs data and eventually hit an intra-day low of 85.71 in NY afternoon.

U.S. weekly jobless claims data unexpectedly rose to 479,000 versus the forecast of 455,000, the increase was the highest in 3 months, suggesting U.S. employers were still in staff reduction mode as recent economic recovery was slowing down.

In other news, Japanese Prime Minister Kan said at a parliamentary meeting in Tokyo morning that he was closely watching the economy's performance to determine whether a fresh response is needed. Japan's trade minister Masayuki Naoshima said that he was worried about a recent rise in yen as Japanese companies would face currency risks and added 'we need to take some form of response.'

Although the single currency traded narrowly in Asia after Wednesday's selloff to 1.3131 and the pair briefly dropped to an intra-day low of 1.3119 in European morning on Thursday, euro then rebounded strongly from there on speculation for potential surprise extension of liquidity provision at ECB's press conference together with the release of much stronger-than-expected German industrial orders, which rose by 3.2% in June versus the economists' forecast of 1.5% rise. Later, despite euro's rally to an intra-day high of 1.3236 after the release of worse-than-expected U.S. jobless data, the single currency then fell sharply to 1.3135 before recovering.

The single currency was supported by the positive comments from ECB president Jean-Claude Trichet earlier, as he said after ECB kept its interest rate unchanged that incoming economic data for Q3 showed stronger-than-expected eurozone growth. He indicated that 'the stress-testing exercise was comprehensive and rigorous and the results confirm the resilience of EU and eurozone banking systems as a whole to severe economic and financial shocks'.

ECB kept benchmark interest rate unchanged at a record low of 1.0% as expected. ECB also kept its overnight deposit rate, which acts as a floor for money markets, at 0.25% and left its marginal lending rate at 1.75%.

The British pound moved sideways in Asia after the previous session's strong retreat to 1.5857 before falling to 1.5820 in European morning. Although sterling rebounded strongly from there and touched 1.5925, cable retreated swiftly after the announcement of BoE rate decision and asset purchase target and eventually dropped to 1.5824 in NY morning before recovering.

The Bank of England kept interest rates unchanged at a record low of 0.5% as widely expected and announced no new quantitative easing purchases.

The closely watched US non-farm payrolls data would be released on Friday.

Economic data to be released on Friday include: Australia RBA Monetary Policy Statement, Japan Leading indicators, Swiss Unemployment rate, U.K. Industrial prod'n, Manufacturing prod'n, PPI input, PPI output, PPI core, Germany Industrial, Canada Unemployment rate, Net Change in Employment, Canada Ivey PMI, U.S. Unemployment rate, Avg. hourly earnings .
