George Soros slashes exposure to US equities
Reply
George Soros has slashed the amount of money he is willing to gamble on the fortunes of the US stock market in the second quarter as market volatility increased. The fact that Mr Soros – best known as the man reputed to have made $1bn by "breaking the Bank of England" during the 1992 fiscal crisis – has decided to make such a concerted shift out of equities will send a clear message to other investors

DJ GBP/EUR Could Push Higher Given Euro Zone Fragility - UBS
Reply
GBP/EUR could push higher given euro zone's fragile outlook, though GBP/USD won't be gaining in a hurry, says UBS FX strategist Brian Kim. "While we maintain our negative outlook on (GBP/USD), there could be further gains versus the euro, as any escalation in euro zone debt issues would lead to safe-haven gilt inflows." Yen To Keep On Climbing - JPMorgan
Official intervention in the yen would not work, and even if it happens, the currency is going to keep on climbing. Indeed, it'll climb even faster if the authorities try to keep it down, according to Tohru Sasaki at JP Morgan in Tokyo. USD/JPY is set to break below post-war lows of 79.75 by the end of the year, he says. Official yen selling would be futile, drawing in hoards of new buyers, judging from past experience, Sasaki says.

CALENDAR ITEM PREVIEW
Entry: Target: Stop:

Lloyds TSB Data preview from GVI Blog

"The most important release of the week is the (BOE) minutes of the August MPC policy meeting (Wednesday). The minutes take on greater importance given the cautious note struck by the Bank of England in last week’s Inflation Report. The BoE revised down its projection for GDP growth in 2011.

Moreover, despite revising up its short-term inflation outlook, it stuck with its view that annual CPI would fall well below the government’s 2% target over the medium term. The minutes will show the importance the Committee now attaches to the arguments surrounding the UK policy debate. While one member - Andrew Sentance - is likely to have argued again for a modest tightening, the tone of the Inflation Report suggests other members still need a lot of convincing.

Overall, we expect the most likely outcome of the policy vote was 8-1 in favour of no change. Given the Bank’s latest forecasts, however, we would not be surprised if there was a three-way split, with one or two members voting in favour of a resumption of QE. The minutes are released after the CPI figures (Tuesday), but before the public finance data and retail sales figures."

Since the FOMC meeting last Tuesday, looking at the FOMC statement and reaction in markets one could not help but think the Fed is a few meetings away from QE2…expanding the balance sheet…the new form of easing (forget the Fed funds rate or IOER).

There are great people on here with whom I have had good insights into the market and on many occasions have benefited from that. People such as the GVI team, HK RF , Mailman, Rana etc to name just a few.

I suggest to the noobs [ I say noobs ] on here that this is not a place for bashing, frustration but watch, learn and make money. If you don't have anything important to say about the FX Mkt you dont belong here. I simple group petition to have you removed can be done as a last resort but one would hope that you would be mature enough to rectify the matter without referral.

Now lets trade.....

Industrial Production/Capacity Utilization

Industrial Production is an index designed to measure changes in the level of output in the industrial sector of the economy. The index is grouped by both products (consumer goods, business equipment, intermediate goods, and materials) and industry (manufacturing, mining, and utilities). The data is produced by the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System

IMPACT: While the industrial sector of the economy represents only about 20 percent of GDP, because changes in GDP are heavily concentrated in the industrial sector changes in this index provide useful information on the current growth of GDP. The level of capacity utilization in the industrial sector provides information on the overall level of resource utilization in the economy which may in turn provide information on the likely future course of inflation.

Under the surface, the cracks in the euro are getting worse. The imbalances in the euro area are growing all the time. The resistance to the bailout package will rise as the terms turn out to be immoral and absurd. And the big-deficit nations are locked in a downward economic spiral. The fevered predictions of the early summer that the euro was doomed, and that Europe’s sovereign-debt crisis would rip through countries such as Spain and Portugal like a virus, have been forgotten. The crisis appears to be over. The euro has bought itself some time, at a huge cost. And yet little has been done to fix the causes of the crisis. LINK

What a hung parliament would mean for Australia
Reply
(Reuters) - Australia's Labor government, fighting for a second term in office at a knife-edge August 21 election, narrowly leads the conservative opposition with five days to go before polling. Investors hate uncertainty, so a result that would leave a minority government would be initially unwelcome to financial markets, hitting bonds and the Australian dollar. It would also be rare for Australia, adding to the unknown.

The Reserve Bank of Australia looks set to leave interest rates on hold until the final months of the year at least after telling financial markets Tuesday nothing has happened of late to shake it out of its comfort zone, with inflation under control. Shaky global markets will also deter the RBA from raising rates any time soon, with the minutes warning that uncertainty remains "elevated from levels at the start of the year." Katie Dean, head of macro at ANZ, said the RBA also has a close focus on consumers and households, and any change in trends in spending will be the next trigger for a move in interest rates. Paul Brennan, chief economist at Citigroup, said the RBA has signaled it won't be looking to raise rates again until 2011 as the economy shows every sign of being nicely balanced over comings quarters and interest rates are back to average levels. "With lending rates already at around average levels, economic growth close to trend and inflation expected to decline to the target range later in the year, we see no change to the cash rate until next year," he said. Earlier Tuesday, the Melbourne Institute said wages growth is set to remain benign over the next year, taking further pressure off the RBA for any near-term action on interest rates. Wages are expected to grow by around 2.6% over the next 12 months, well below any rate that would alarm the RBA. "This suggests that employees do not expect a substantial tightening in the labor market. This is in line with recent indicators that suggest that growth in the Australian economy is slowing," said Edda Claus, a Research Fellow at the Melbourne Institute.

China's shaky second-place pace
Reply
If Chinese consumption weakens substantially over coming months, he says, it will give credence to the argument that low consumption is a fundamental feature of the Chinese growth models that uses hidden taxes to channel household income into subsidising growth. “Growth is high, in other words, because consumption is low.”
Pettis argues that Beijing will only be able to increase the share of Chinese GDP going to consumption, by ensuring that more income and wealth flows to the household sector. “Chinese households are happy to consume, but they own such a small share of total national income that their consumption is necessarily also a small share of national income. And just as the household share of national income has declined dramatically in the past decade, so has household consumption.”link

Dollar falls sharply versus yen and Swiss Franc on risk aversion

Dollar tanked against the Japanese yen on Monday, as concerns over global economic recovery prompted investors to buy safe-haven currencies such as the Japanese yen and Swiss franc.

The greenback fell against the yen from 86.24 to 85.70 in Asian morning on risk aversion and active cross buying in yen together with talk of possible demand from Japanese exporters and investor fund repatriation. Later, although dollar staged a recovery in Europe, renewed selling at 85.96 pushed dollar sharply lower again and the pair sank to an intra-day low of 85.21 in NY before trading narrowly. The weak Japanese growth data (GDP) sparked risk aversion which pressured usd/jpy lower. Japanese Q2 GDP annualised was 0.1%, versus the expectations of 2.3% and the previous reading of 5.0%.

In addition, Japanese Economics Minister Satoshi Arai said the Japanese government would need to work with the BOJ to respond to the sharp rise in yen against dollar. He added the government was in discussions with the BOJ on yen rise and he would be watching whether yen rise might prevent a self-sustaining economic recovery. Earlier, the senior Japanese official Keisuke Tsumura (parliamentary secretary at the Cabinet office) said that risks posed by a strong yen to Japan's economic recovery were increasing.

The U.S. dollar tumbled against Swiss franc from 1.0534 to 1.0350 on risk aversion and active cross buying in chf (eur/chf fell sharply from 1.3449 to 1.3272) as speculators bought Swiss franc actively despite last Friday's comments from SNB's Jordan about the success of the SNB's intervention.

In other news, the Federal Reserve said that bank lending standards eased somewhat over the last quarter, while demand for business and consumer loans was largely unchanged. The Treasury Department said earlier that net long-term capital inflows rose to $44.4B in June from a $35.5B inflow in May.

Although the single currency resumed its decline against the dollar from this month's high at 1.3334 to 1.2734 on cross selling in euro versus yen at Asian opening, the pair then rebounded on short-covering and ratcheted higher to 1.2836 in Europe. Later, euro rose again and climbed to an intra-day high of 1.2872 before retreating on profit-taking due to the weakness in DJI (DJI closed the day down by 1.14 points at 10302).

The single currency was also supported by comments of Yu Yongding, a former adviser to the People's Bank of China who was part of a foreign-policy advisory committee. He said that China has been buying 'quite a lot' of European bonds.

Despite the British pound's retreat to an intra-day low of 1.5535 at Asian opening, sterling staged a rebound in tandem with euro on short-covering, as a comment from Telegraph that 'Ireland could carry out further spending cuts without crashing into an irreversible debt-deflation spiral' might in part boost the optimism of cable against dollar, and sterling climbed to 1.5642 at European opening. Later, cable rose again to an intra-day high of 1.5703 in NY due to dollar's broad-based weakness together with the renewed cross buying in sterling before retreating.

Earlier, Rightmove house price index showed U.K. house asking prices fell for the second consecutive month in August, dropping 1.7% on the month vs a 0.6% fall in July, suggesting the British economy had shown the sign of sluggishness.

On data front, Eurozone July inflation confirmed at 1.7% y/y versus 1.4% y/y in June whilst core inflation was 1.0% y/y against 0.9% in June and the data came in as widely expected.

Economic data to be released on Tuesday include: EU Current account (euro), ZEW survey, U.K. CPI, CPI core, RPI, RPI–X, Germany ZEW index, U.S. Building permits, Housing starts, PPI, PPI core, Industrial prod'n, Capacity utilisation.
