AUD/USD To Be Held Back By RBA Expectations - NAB
Reply
Sentiment towards global economy continues to be main driver of AUD/USD, says John Kyriakopoulos, head of FX strategy at NAB. Heavy domestic data load approaches with current account data for 2Q at 0130 GMT to provide latest partial indicator ahead of 2Q GDP report Wednesday. Says data will need to be strong enough to reverse current pricing for modest RBA interest rate cut over next 6 months to get AUD/USD rising again given backdrop of falling investor risk-appetite. Support for AUD/USD at 0.8860 while resistance tipped at 0.9000. Adds approximately $1.5 billion in AUD/USD selling may be forthcoming at London fix later today as Australian retirement funds adjust currency hedges on holdings of offshore stocks. AUD/USD now 0.8916.

NZ Recovery Faltering, RBNZ Should Keep Rates On Hold-Institute
Reply
New Zealand's economic recovery is faltering, and near-term growth risks and distant inflationary pressures mean the Reserve Bank of New Zealand should pause its current hiking cycle, the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research said Tuesday. Shamubeel Eaqub, NZIER principal economist, said in a report on the institute's quarterly predictions. Nonresidential construction sector is particularly vulnerable in the current climate. "Work usually lags consents by a year--a year ago the level of consented floor area fell by a third. This alone may put around 20,000 construction sector jobs at risk," he said.

NZX-50 Likely Weaker As Finance Company Collapses
Reply
NZX-50 likely lower as weakness in offshore markets, collapse of finance company South Canterbury Finance weighs on market sentiment, says Forsyth Barr broker Dave Schaper.
"There is a lot of interest in SCF's future... I think you've got a lot of cautious people watching and waiting and this washes over into the market. It shouldn't but it does." NZD/USD weaker after receiver appointed for South Canterbury Finance, pair last 0.7039 vs 0.7057 pre announcement; "It's down on the back of that news. There is some nervousness in the market over it," says ANZ FX Manager Murray Hindley.

Building industry faces double dip as cornerstone economy is under threat
Reply
Alarm bells will ring this week over fears that the construction industry, the cornerstone
of the economy, is heading into its own double-dip recession. The sector has barely dragged itself back from last year’s slump in output – the worst since the 1974 property crash – before the Government’s austerity squeeze looks set to push it back down again.
LINK

Britain's manufacturing renaissance is likely to be highlighted in figures due this week, but there are worries about how long the factory wheels can keep spinning.

US Data Will Be Key For JPY - Wells Fargo
Reply
Wells Fargo says it would certainly not rule out market intervention by the Bank of Japan as the next step, the experience of 2004 suggests it may not necessarily lead to a reversal in JPY's positive trend. "Ultimately, we still believe the direction of the US data will be key for the yen and the FX markets more broadly in the coming weeks and months," it says. This week is likely to bring more subdued data, challenging the fragile sense of optimism after Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's comments Friday, it says. "Our bias is for somewhat stronger 'safe haven' currencies such as the dollar, yen and Swiss franc," Wells Fargo says

Hungary's risk profile is set to see a sharp reassessment, and Hungarian assets are bound to deteriorate should the economic outlook worsen as expected, says Brown Brothers Harriman. "The government certainly hasn't given markets any reason to be confident in their capabilities, not when officials continue to flip-flop with regards to fiscal policy and the IMF program,"
Brown Brothers Harriman.

NZD/USD May Test Support On Finance Co Worries-ANZ
NZD/USD may test support today as "developments on the secondary finance front unfold today" as market awaits announcement from South Canterbury Finance, says ANZ Bank. Pair last 0.7072 vs 0.7103 late yesterday. Beleaguered finance company due to make an announcement this morning about efforts to recapitalize, restructure to meet liquidity requirements set out in Trust Deed as waiver on liquidity requirements expires today. Market will also be watching for Building Consents data due this morning. NZD/USD weaker on back of soft U.S. equity markets, underlying nervousness, says Westpac currency strategist Imre Speizer; "It tells you that sentiment is still clearly vulnerable to the downside." Says big event risk on day is Australian data, including retail sales, current account data, private sector credit. Locally, concerns remain about South Canterbury Finance, with announcement about company's efforts to recapitalize, restructure due this morning. Says while negative aspects largely priced in Kiwi still subject to negative headline risk, depending on outcome for South Canterbury Finance.

Today happens to be a day where markets have again moved opposite of expectations especially on usd/yen, gbp/usd and euro - the three were being hyped to rise today, Monday. But look at where are they now? For example, GBP/USD reversed not from the expected resistance at 1.5590 but @1.5575. Aussie shorters were lined up at 9050/40 but price did not even reach there. Many trading paradoxes.

In addition, FXPRO.COM have been widening spreads ( in excess of 10 pips ) on major pairs during increased trading level periods and in some cases have been giving clients up to 30 requotes on major pairs according to a client lodging complaint with with Cyprus Securities Commission.

Data @ 12:30 GMT

U.S. Personal Income
Personal income is defined as the income that is received by persons from participation in production, from both government and business transfer payments, and from government interest (which is treated like a transfer payment). It is calculated as the sum of wage and salary disbursements, other labor income, proprietors'' income with inventory valuation and capital consumption adjustments, rental income of persons with capital consumption adjustment, personal dividend income, personal interest income, and transfer payments to persons, less personal contributions for social insurance.

U.S. Core PCE price index
The Core PCE price index is defined as personal consumption expenditures (PCE) prices excluding food and energy.

IMPACT: Core PCE is said to be the preferred inflation measure of the Fed and therefore is a very significant release in that it can influence policy. It is thought the Fed targets core PCE loosely between 2.0% and 3.0%.

Canada Current Account balance
The Current Account balance is the difference between a nation's exports of goods and services and its imports of goods and services. The current account is one of the two primary components of the balance of payments, the other being the capital account. It is called the current account because goods and services are generally consumed in the current period.

Canada- Producer Price Index (PPI)
The PPI is a price index designed to measure the level of wholesale prices in a given economy. Its another input into the policy making decisions of central banks.

Tensions Flare In Australia's Political Negotiations
Reply
Discussions to form a minority government in Australia have become embroiled in tension after a key independent lawmaker Monday detailed claims of intimidation tactics by members of the opposition coalition which he said are a bid to derail talks and force fresh elections.

The claims have their roots in the long-running acrimony that exists between three non-party lawmakers who could hold the balance of power in the lower house--Rob Oakeshott, Bob Katter and Tony Windsor--and some of their contemporaries in the Liberal-National opposition, and could influence the thinking on which side the independents support.
Some have been predicting a government could be formed by this weekend but the latest developments raise the potential for a delay or even for negotiations with both sides to collapse, which could mean Australians are forced to return soon to the polls.
What is of deeper concern is if this is a strategic move to try and destabilise this whole process, destabilise government, spend up to A$50 million of Australian tax payers' money in going back to the ballot box to try achieve a political purpose

Spain is the next candidate for a downgrade, says Danske Bank, expecting a move by Moody's within a month. While euro-zone peripheral peer Ireland's downgrade by Standard & Poor's wasn't surprising, the statement by the S&P afterwards was, Danske says, referring to the fact that Ireland will remain on a negative outlook. Says Ireland is ahead of Spain on austerity measures and cleaning up the banking sector. "Furthermore, Spain is the next candiate for a downgrade and here we could be in for a nasty surprise given what we have seen on Ireland and Greece."

Ok Sal. I am in now gbp/yen - longs after the pair touched 131.95 earlier. Seems USD/yen has found support just within the CP area. No need to fear much now. After all there is nothing to fear but fear itself.

JPY Up Vs NZD, AUD, GBP;BOJ Not Aggressive-Dealer
Reply
NZD, AUD, GBP falling vs JPY, taking cue from falls in USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, where non-Japan hedge funds taking a lead, says senior dealer at major non-Japanese bank in Tokyo. Says "announced measures look a bid odd and are not as aggressive as we had expected," he says. Adds, hedge funds may keep buying JPY ahead "to test the government's will to see if they would really go ahead and intervene," he says. NZD/JPY last 60.72, may fall to 60.50. AUD/JPY last at 76.74, may fall to 76.50. GBP/JPY at 132.60, may fall to 132.40. DJ

NZ Confidence Survey Indicates Fragile Recovery-GS
Reply
National Bank of NZ's Business Outlook survey highlights fragile recovery, says NZ Goldman Sachs Strategist Bernard Doyle; "the turnaround in sentiment over the past quarter has underlined the fragility of momentum in this economy." Says survey underscores why RBNZ should not be raising interest rates.

NZD/JPY under pressure after BOJ announcement; pair last 60.79 vs 61.15 ahead of announcement. RBC Capital Markets currency strategist Sue Trinh tips initial support at 60.50 after BOJ "outcome has proved most underwhelming." After emergency meeting, BOJ decides to newly lend Y10 trillion of 6-months funds, lengthening duration of low interest-rate loans available to money market; BOJ started offering 3-month loans in December. Trinh says Asian session game of two halves, with early short covering of USD/JPY and cross yen after news BOJ had called unscheduled meeting. Says equity markets gained amid hopes strong JPY would be addressed, but "all of that was turned on its head." Says BOJ delivered pretty much bare minimum and "is unlikely to keep JPY strength at bay."

JPY Ticks Higher After BOJ Fails To Impress
Reply
JPY moves tad higher across the board, as BOJ measures to ease monetary policy further not looking enough to weaken currency after multi-week rally. "I would use any weakness to buy JPY," says Tim Condon, FX strategist with ING Bank. "These measures are not going to alter the situation of yen strength."
