BIS Report Suggests Japan Intervention Difficult
Reply
BIS's triennial central bank survey shows USD/JPY's average daily turnover rises to $568 billion in April 2010; that compares with $328 billion in April 2004, year when Japan last intervened in FX markets. Nearly-doubled market volumes suggests Japan MOF may find it very difficult stopping JPY's rise via intervention. What's more, Japan MOF official recently told Dow Jones that if it steps into market, amount of JPY-selling would be much less than in past campaigns. BIS survey shows activity by other financial institutions including hedge funds up by 42% in 2010 survey from 2007 report, suggesting if Japan steps into market, they could have to contend with many more short-term investors taking on fresh JPY-long positions on view U.S. economic growth momentum to weaken, JPY to rise. Pair last 84.17, Tokyo dealers says pair may fall below 84.00 again in Asian trade

DJ USD Taking 3rd Place In Safe Haven Contest - BNZ
Reply
USD likely to continue to firm against EUR, commodity currencies like AUD, NZD on day "as risk aversion creeps higher right across the board," says BNZ FX Strategist Mike Jones. Adds will continue to lose ground against JPY, CHF; "It's almost like the USD is taking third-place in the safe haven contest, given concerns about slowing U.S. growth momentum." But, unlikely to be any major moves as investors wait for onslaught of global economic reports due to hit markets. Says August Eurozone PMIs, U.S. ISM index will provide an update on health of global manufacturing sector. Focus will then shift to U.S. nonfarm payrolls data. last friday CFTC data showed hedge went short first time after august 2008. then oil traded over 140. and came down 110 dollars and it took only 4 months.
people are saying that without passive investments to commodities (300 billion assest under management) oil could trade with currents stocks at 10 or 15 dollars a barrel.

Thu Sep 2 @ 9:00 GMT EZ- We look for an unchanged outturn of +1.0% quarter-on-quarter for eurozone Q2 GDP, with the recent upward revision to Spanish GDP to - 0.1% quarter-on-quarter from -0.2% previously having only a limited impact.
Thu Sep 2 @ 11:45 GMT EZ- We look for the ECB’s refinancing rate to stay at 1%, although the meeting is likely to be more notable for the new staff economic projections and the decision on whether to extend its 3-month unlimited liquidity operation beyond the end of September. In terms of data - in contrast to the US – euro area survey indicators broadly continue to surprise on the upside, bolstered by healthy demand for exports.
Fri Sep 3 @ 8:30 GMT UK- Look for a small drop in the services PMI. It is expected to remain at levels consistent with decent, albeit unspectacular, growth.
Fri Sep 3 @ 12:30 GMT US- August non-farm payrolls where we look for a total decline of 100k, albeit with a (modest) rise in private sector jobs. The US labour market remains a concern for the Fed and employers are reluctant to add to payrolls in a still uncertain economic environment.

Purchasing Managers Index - Chicago PMI
Most major economies have purchasing managers indices (PMI) released monthly. They are compiled by various organizations. Some focus on the manufacturing sector while others measure the service sector. They are a very current measure of the economic health of the manufacturing or services sector. The PMI indices are usually based on five major indicators: new orders, inventory levels, production, supplier deliveries and the employment environment.

The S&P/Case-Shiller U.S. National Home Price Index is a broader composite of single-family home price indices for the nine U.S. Census divisions and is calculated quarterly.

the USD/JPY move from 84 to 86 was based on the intervention talk but the reversal is telling me the talk of inherent strength of the underlying trends which is just the same as the EUR/CHF fight of the SNB - you stir the daily trading and pressure the short term speculators but the prevailing trend will take its course - tradewise this should mean either play for short term gains with tight stops or go with the trends and use wide stops or position trade (which is still not enough clear to me how is exactly done..)

30-Year Bond yield reverses UP
Seems USD trend continues but it's not underpinned by the rise in bond yields as they reversed again and as Tonbridge AL pointed their Friday move was due to Options expiry..
that leaves us with the idea of going with the prevailing trend which is USD strength or as Dennis Gartman simply puts it:
"Do more of what's working and less of what isn't."

Australian Dollar Down Late, Bond Short-End Surges
Chinese and U.S. manufacturing data and U.S. jobs data this week had those long the Australian dollar paring back their positions, especially in the wake of weak equities in the U.S. and Asia. Ahead of the data, investment bank research departments have been particularly skeptical, with local bank Westpac hinting at possible weakness in the U.S. reports.
"If we're on the right track, it's hard to get too bullish about this week being a turn around for equities and that will weigh on the Aussie," said Sean Callow, senior currency strategist with Westpac.

Guys this is a very important matter IMO
TRND has little to do with it...

first got to establish a theoretical Level to label a pair as over bought or Oversold
so some sort of benchmark
Using Lagged OLS of about 60 Models
I get this BenchMark

NZD/USD Trending Down As Risk Appetite Fades -BNZ
Reply
NZD/USD trending lower on weak AUD, collapse of NZ finance company South Canterbury Finance, weak sentiment about global recovery, says BNZ FX strategist Mike Jones; "There is generally a softer risk appetite across the board and Asian stocks are well into the red today and markets are generally reassessing their risk appetite." Pair last 0.7023 vs 0.7072 early this morning.
NZD/USD dragged lower as AUD/USD under pressure following soft export data in Australia; "It had analysts scrambling around to revise their GDP picks for tomorrow." Says "the risk is the Kiwi will continue to sniff out fresh lows" particularly if it breaks through major support at 0.7000. Adds next support level not until 0.6850

Australia PM: Need New Consensus To Avoid Gridlock
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Tuesday lawmakers need to explore new ways of achieving a consensus to avoid parliamentary gridlock after the most inconclusive election result in 70 years. "If the new government is to be effective and make progress on the big challenges our nation is facing, then I believe we will need to go beyond the politics of 75 votes plus one," Gillard told reporters. "If the new government doesn't find new ways to establish consensus and parliamentary support, then we will have gridlock."

NAB Cuts Aussie 2Q GDP Forecast On Soft Data
Reply
Softer-than-expected net exports, public investment has economists at National Australia Bank cutting 2Q GDP growth forecast to 0.6% on-quarter, from 1.0% previously; official 2Q GDP data due tomorrow. at 0130 GMT. "We have now seen soft business investment and inventory growth, while private and public consumption, residential building and net exports will contribute to growth. We expect that domestic demand growth will come in around 0.5% in 2Q, with the net exports contribution essentially offsetting the detraction from inventories," writes NAB in an afternoon note.

AUD Focus On US Despite Local Data - Trader
Reply
With AUD/USD spike on strong local data proving rather fleeting, JPM FX trader Phil Burke says stronger-than-expected numbers won't cause market to start pricing in RBA rate rises anytime soon. Burke expects rates on hold for remainder of year. "I think there was just a bit of a squeeze of Aussie shorts," he says. "The market is still concerned about the global picture and the U.S. recovery." Pair now back at 0.8929, up only slightly from 0.8927 before data, after initially hitting high of 0.8956. Key upcoming data reports from the U.S. are August ISM Manufacturing on Wednesday, August payrolls on Friday. "If they come out strong, then potentially we'll get a bounce on that, but overall, the market seems to be getting more and more entrenched to conceding that a slowdown is on its way." AUD/USD to remain under pressure from worries about a double-dip in the U.S. and slow, prolonged recovery from there. Adds month-end selling tonight could weigh on pair; reweighting of hedges could mean AUD selling because U.S. equity market down for the month. Next target back toward 0.8850 if 0.8900 breaks

End Looms For Era of Cheap Chinese Labor
Reply
It feels like the end of an era. The spate of strikes and suicides that have rocked China’s southern manufacturing belt over the last fortnight could well go down as the moment that China stopped being a place of endless cheap labor. And for the economy, it could be a thoroughly good thing.
They are part of a pattern of rising wages across the economy. Dai Qinlan, director of the Careers Information Center in Wenzhou, another export hub on the east coast, said that wages are up around 20 percent in most of the region’s factories this year.
“Companies in China can still get young workers for their factories, but they are going to have to pay significantly more for them,” says Arthur Kroeber, managing director of Dragonomics in Beijing.
