Late bill payments prompt fears of corporate collapses
The latest Dun & Bradstreet Trade Payment Analysis for the March 2011 quarter, released yesterday, warned that the number of firms "severely delinquent" in paying their bills had risen dramatically.
AN increasing number of businesses are struggling to pay their bills on time leading to worries that corporate collapses are set to rise.

Dr Pangloss in Voltaire’s Candide only sees the world as “the best of all possible worlds” or the eternal optimist. Dr Strangelove in the Kubrick movie of the same name is a weapons expert who has developed the doomsday machine that in the event of a nuclear attack the machine will destroy the world, is fully automatic and can’t be deactivated. Stocks are near the 2007 record high run on a narrative that is Panglossian optimism in the extreme.

  • The death of Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan has has no lasting impact on the markets. No one feels this eliminates the terrorist threat. Many are on edge now about revenge attacks.

  • Dealers took a slightly weaker than expected headline manufacturing PMI in stride. Some focused on the elevated "prices paid" sub-component. Monday saw scattered May Day observations.

  • A major focus remains the Fed with the markets having scant confidence in the central bank or Chairman Bernanke as inflation fighters. Odds are  the Federal Reserve will take no actions for months.

  • U.S. officials seem content with the weak USD.

  • The U.K. and China were closed Monday due to holidays.

AUD/USD and NZD/USD outlook next 24 hours: AUD's intraday double top at 1.1012 signals a possible correction today to around 1.0900, but the larger degree uptrend remains intact. for higher still. Similarly, NZD has not convincingly broken above 0.8100 and risks a pullback to 0.8000 today, before testing 0.8215 in coming days. Major event risk today comes from the RBA meeting, a rate hike most unlikely but signals for such ahead possible. NZ's wage survey was conducted pre-quake so is largely irrelevant.

Not much else to say other than the question was answered although the new high was by just 20 pips.

Question from here is whether this is yet another shallow correction attempt before the next new high or the start of a general retracement for the battered dollar.

Of all my long term stuff shorting swissy worked...afterall with a 1 year plunge...who could lose? I really don't want to bid EUR either no matter what the silly mkt is doing. Looking on dailies, EUR/CHF didn't look good this AM for my usual Monday short either, so I didn't. Maybe shorting it about here would be good..but I'll stick with my swissy shorts (86.30s~60s) for now. EUR/CHF range since Dec is 1.32s - 1.23s, it's in midrange so it could go either way chartwise, common sence tells me it's going to short long term as it has for over a year now except for this flat-ish range it's been running since Dec. I suspect SNB had to step in about then otherwise EUR would be eaten.

I think it's going to be an unpredictable week short term. I longed XAg 46.14 TP 47.21 TEMPORARY, today on autopilot...as well as on autopilot a buy order took @ 45.04 that TP'd already, too soon, not taking the full run. Oh well, it's profit in any case. I've been in and out of the office all morning and hadn't had time to hand tune things. XAG lacking about $1.10 of attaining Asian open so it looks like it's recouping just fine. If it dips again suddenly I would be more attracted to buying the dip and TP under 49.5 than continuing with the prospect it's gonna long past 50. For now.

Paris, you & JP are 100% correct. When the globe realizes the government B.S./media story they've been fed for years, the house of cards will implode. FX, equities, metals ...it'll be clear where funds must safehouse, no where to hide. Maybe as early as next year but eventually this holding onto straws (last ditch efforts called QE etc) with Washington's watered down USD & Frankfurt's wobbly EUR has to stop. The car is fast running out of fuel & the pumps are low.

Au today - $36 range , normal, lost only $9ish from Asian open yesterday to this moment. It was purely a silver thing, down about 10%...from options expiry? (??) The last time Ag dipped it did it suddenly like today, stop hunt (mine included) then regained it all back making fools out of all of us (except those maybe big players again.. who longed the dip). Now it's doing the same silly thing & since nothing else is affected, only XAG, obviously it's the silver mkt.

Therefore, XAG mkt is manipulated or some very heavy players are selling & the mkt is recouperating the value by simple demand. This proves strength in XAG. You can beat it up and it bounces back. $50 is a strong barrier and I suspect it would take a sudden and severe disconfidence in USD to reach it. If anyone can get a handle of silver's erratic pattern we'd sure like to see.

I converted part of my FX account from USD to CHF on the same platform but a 2nd account, probably should have done it all.

dc said it right yesterday, time to sit back 'til all this weird stuff settles down. Never feel compelled to trade I always said. I have a few going but not heavy and they're so long term this forum wouldn't be interested.

The OBL deal had no effect with Ag or much of anything else yet for it would have hit XAU & didn't. Killing OBL is not USD supportive in the long run nor oil supportive, in fact as I said it's anything but, depends on what the fanatics/parasites of Al Qaeda do (or don't do) in 12-24 months. Al Q especially if they ally with Taliban & Iran firmer, could deter oil in several ways.

Afterall, much of this mideast fracas, i.e. an American/European coalition crusaders vs Taliban/Al Q guerillas is to supply China with oil. The Chinese are pretty smart, let everyone else spill blood without one single Chinese solder on the ground. Ya gotta hand it to 'em. (and hand 'em oil too).

If good USD economic news erupts only a foolish mkt would buy it and right now I think the mkt is pretty foolish hence my abstaining from trades at the moment.

It is possible for EUR/USD to go up higher at this point, perhaps close to 1.4900. However, I would look to a drop to 1.4706 (+1 Standard Deviation on daily chart) or even 1.4519 (20-day SMA) before buying.

We have had the attack on Libya and the confiscation of offshore Libyan funds with hints that the real objective is the very large Libyan gold holdings held in Libya.... possibly I suppose offshore Syrian, Saudi, Yemeni, Tunisian funds could be at risk. Don't know what other potential sources of funding are out there.

We have had the strange Obama Birth Certificate saga, the Osama Bin-Laden (buried at sea ha ha) farce, downgrades, Euro crisis, Japanese earthquake and still the USD fails to rally. The end of QE2 approaches, the debt ceiling-deficit saga has not been resolved and time is running out. What next in this weird media circus and when do they give up? Well silly question really but when does all this media circus stop mattering and the panic really set in? NOW?

11:00 GMT (Global-View.com) May 2 - The FX market has tried to react to Bin Laden's death but so far with mixed results. Stocks are up, oil is down and eur/usd is still focused on 1.48, which has traded both sides today, currently above it. Question from here is whether this is yet another shallow correction attempt before the next new high or the start of a general retracement for the battered dollar.

Looking at the chart (posted above), the 100 hour mva (green line) is currently 1.4758 vs, the intra-day low at 1.4762 so an indicator to watch going forwards.

Otherwise, today saw a lower low for the first time since last Tuesday's correction attempt bounced off of 1.4492 so a chink in the armor.

For today, there have been two stabs above 1.4850 and two below 1.48, making 1.4800-50 sort of a no man's land. Upside is limtied unless 1.4881 (recent high) is taken out. Downside needs to take out the 100 hour mva and 1.4750 to shift the focus from 1.48+.

CB. Somebody or something is very scared, that's for sure. Somewhere something is crumbling and it is being hidden (or at least the attempt to hide is being made). Welcome to Lehman Bros. Mark II, or Enron, or Madoff or..... well there's quite a list. The question is: how long before we find out what's up?

The wheels have fallen off the PR machine and all the downgrades (of Japan and European countries), the spectacular and pointless U.S. military campaigns, finding Bin-Laden, and all the associated media rah rah just doesn't seem to be enough to give the shine back to a very faded empire. What the U.S. needs is a steady inflow of other people's money and it's just not happening.

Osama bin Laden killed 'on same day' as Adolf Hitler

Osama bin Laden was killed 66 years to the day that Adolf Hitler's death was announced.

The al-Qaeda leader's death was revealed by Barack Obama on May 2 in the UK but May 1 in the US.

Hitler's demise was announced by Germany on the evening of May 1, 1945, the day after he shot himself.

I guarantee you, if the mkt thinks killing OBL is USD positive and metals negative they are sadly mistaken. I forsee a heightened terrorism threat directed mainly to Pakistan and USA by the new Al Qaeda chief whomever it turns out to be and supporters thereof. I don't want to see this but I feel it is never-the-less true. More threat means more $ spent on security which the US simply does not have to spare. Iran will back the new Al Q poobah just as they did anyway, maybe more. My nephew on the ground in Afghanistan (not now but not long ago) said they captured a lot of Iranian materials from insurgents...Taliban and otherwise, he was in a front line infantry unit so his statement is true. Also he is a commo specialist and hears literally anything going over the air.

So if the market wants to kneejerk and think a dead OBL is USD positive and metals neg, they will be in for a huge surprise.

Platforms will charge more spread on XAG until liquidity returns, later this morning.

This is not a political post. It is forex....

The fact OBL is dead and likely some of his staff with him, he had to have had a Plan B to put someone in charge of Al Q and that person is now in charge. Most new "leaders" want to make an impression so expect more terrorism as the new Al Qaeda poobah settles in. More terrorism, more $ spent in USA on security.

What would seem to be USD positive in eliminating OBL to me it's the opposite, more threat, more $ to fight it, that should actually weigh on USA.

So what do we have? First this bizarre Birth Certificate announcement (which I personally found a bit weird), now the Osama announcement (when he was supposedly killed years ago). And a rent-a-crowd cheering in front of the White House.

Is someone trying to boost the credibility of the U.S. Administration?

When a developed, sovereign nation finds itself borrowing at VISA card interest rates, it’s time to declare (really, admit) bankruptcy. With market interest rates on its 2-year notes now exceeding 22%, this is the position that Greece is in today. By making a bargain with the bailout devil to raise taxes in the name of “austerity”, Greece has pitched itself into an economic death spiral from which there is no escape short of defaulting on its debts.

Reply

If you want to go back to the roots of Greece’s financial crisis, you could always start with Philip II of Spain. Born in 1527; acceded to the Spanish throne in 1556; defaulted on the national debt in 1557, 1560, 1575 and 1596; died in 1598. Now there’s a sovereign who knew how to renounce sovereign debt. Philip would leave an Argentine finance minister standing.

Some things in life are simply inevitable: The NHL will abandon its failed experiment in the Arizona desert; Fed chairman Ben Bernanke won’t tell us anything we don’t already know at his historic first press conference; and Greece will restructure its debt.

As for the Greeks, the only question is why is something so obvious taking so long?

Osama Bin Laden Is Dead; US Authorities Have The Body - Reports

Osama Bin Laden finally laid to rest? While this is a big blow to international terrorist movement's cause, we are pretty sure he has capably trained his heir-apparent, group of highly trained assassins and terrorists. The torch has been passed on. I think they are more than prepared for this eventuality. US and the world should never be complacent. Death of Osama is not the same as death of terrorist threats.

At least the markets have a temporary reason to cheer. Question is until when it will hold positive for the markets, particularly the USD and stock markets?

This sudden move in Asia is so nice to trade....like New york session....so that means Europe / New York is going to be much more exciting......

Just long gold 1545.5 and out 1549.5... Not sure to long or short....trend is still up but we are playing the Risk Reward thing here....and its sure risky taking a long now when support is near 1500..1450...1400.. and reward for up is like 1577 this morning......now that this quick move have occured..its hard to stay the faith either way...its like chop chop time and seems like shorts have the upper hand...

Me thinks if the recent low of 5 minutes near 1544 is taken out then looks like 1533 will be seen ...prefer to catch it there...for a swing low...quite safe to short gold near 1555 now.....should be a few days correction until NFP later this week....when everyone gets excited again...what if Good jobs figure...means rise in US interest rates....and Fall in Indices..or if bad hello ...Gold and more paper Silver??....Too many lies to digest...!! Everything is a lie until reality hits...,,,If China slows....

wow hardly have time to type and gold moved again...time to focus now and GL GT all..... waiting to short gold now 1552 after covering 1549.4
