US ISM today lent first real solid evidence to the notion that the US economy is indeed experiencing a soft patch which reflected two main headwinds, both presumptively temporary. The first and most significant is the aftereffect of the Japan earthquake in mid-March. The second is the run up in commodity prices for most due to MENA uprising and to some QE2.

I'm with you on the gold ooozmeeh. I'm currently flat but will shortly start building my longs again. The attached chart shows how stong the 150Day MA has been for over 2 years now. It's currently at 1441 and rising a bit every day so that corresponds to your 1450 quite nicely.

gold remains bullish LONG TERM, and still trading within the 2-month congestion that started May 2011. and such congestion without doubt is now on extension. gold was also on a 6-month congestion (oct 2010 - mar 2011) before breaking to new multi highs. 1450 is my expected support of this extended congestion. For my long term positions, i will be accumulating aditional buys from here to cost average my buying above 1500 level (these are long term positions).. gl gt

Living on a knife-edge: a massive SIX MILLION Britons have no savings at all

Yes RF, it is part of a 'culture' which has grown up as an unintended by-product of the Welfare state.

The logic says... Oh well, if it all goes wrong, then the State will provide.

Young women have deliberately got themselves in the family way, with the knowledge that they will be allocated a flat ( apartment however humble).

Recently on the radio was a man who brayed that he had saved the State thousands and thousands because HE cared for his disabled son.

..... what a strange perspective..... Oh well, I'm sure that there is a meeting with the inevitable due !

Living on a knife-edge: a massive SIX MILLION Britons have no savings at all
Reply
An astonishing six million Britons are living on a knife edge without a single penny stashed away to protect them against redundancy or sudden jumps in living costs.

Soaring prices across the country - where the average prices have jumped 5.2 per cent in a year (RPI) - have made it impossible for many families to save and forced others to raid their pots to stay afloat.

It's left a massive 13 per cent of us with our pockets empty, according to new research by the Government's savings arm.
National Savings & Investments says that one in three Britons now lives in fear that a cash emergency or job loss would leave them unable to cope.

The news is the latest in a series of gloomy reports highlighting the decline of the savings 'culture' for which Britain was once renowned.

The Greek situation appears to be off the table now until September, so the markets will have to find something else on which to focus. The first day of the week is global manufacturing PMI day, and the data have generally been weaker than expected. The Chinese reading on the NBS PMI was 50.9 while the HSBC index reading was 50.1. A PMI reading below 50 indicates economic contraction.

I was afraid you might ask. I just heard the explanation about a week ago. I think it has to do with the date of the second or third Friday of the prior month, which is when they collect the data. Usually its the first Friday of the month but not always.

Just so you know the release date is scheduled years in advance, so draw no inferences from the date this month.

(Reuters) - The sexual assault case against former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn is near collapse, the New York Times reported on Thursday, raising the prospect an epic political comeback in France.

Strauss-Kahn, 62, a steward of the world economy and a leading candidate for the French presidency when he was arrested on May 14, may now be released on his own recognizance and freed from house arrest as soon as Friday, the paper said.

A source familiar with the case said on Thursday that the credibility of the maid who accused him has come into question.

"The credibility is in question," the source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters.

The New York Times said prosecutors had met with Strauss-Kahn's lawyers on Thursday and the parties were discussing whether to dismiss the felony charges.

Strauss-Kahn's defense attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said earlier on Thursday that their client would go back to court in New York on Friday at 11:30 a.m. before Judge Michael Obus to seek changes to his bail conditions.

"Indeed, Mr. Strauss-Kahn could be released on his own recognizance, and freed from house arrest, reflecting the likelihood that the serious criminal charges against him will not be sustained," the paper said. "The district attorney's office may try to require Mr. Strauss-Kahn to plead guilty to a misdemeanor, but his lawyers are likely to contest such a move."

Strauss-Kahn resigned from the IMF on May 19 and pleaded not guilty on June 6, vehemently denying the allegations. He faced up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

LIES AND INCONSISTENCIES

The New York Times quoted what it said were two well-placed law enforcement officials as saying that although forensic evidence showed there had been a sexual encounter between the French politician and the maid, the accuser had repeatedly lied.

It said that prosecutors had discovered issues involving the asylum application of the 32-year-old housekeeper, who is Guinean, and possible links to criminal activities, including drug dealing and money laundering.

The paper added that prosecutors' investigators had discovered that the woman had had a phone conversation with an incarcerated man within a day of her encounter with Strauss-Kahn in which she discussed the possible benefits of pursuing the charges against him. The conversation was recorded.

It added that the man, who had been arrested on charges of possessing 400 pounds (180 kg) of marijuana, was among a number of individuals who had made multiple cash deposits, totaling around $100,000, into the woman's bank account over the last two years.

From the start, the case hinged on the purported victim, a Guinean immigrant and hotel maid, 32, who cleaned the $3,000-a-night suite at the Sofitel hotel where Strauss-Kahn paid $800.

Prosecutors presented her case before a grand jury, confident in the women's story that Strauss-Kahn sprang naked from the bathroom, chased her down and hall and tried to force her to perform oral sex on him. He was indicted.

Now "prosecutors do not believe much of what the accuser has told them about the circumstances or about herself," the Times reported.

With his resignation, Strauss-Kahn severed all his ties to the IMF. Christine Lagarde, who just stepped down as French finance minister, takes over the top IMF job on Tuesday.

Pulled from the first-class section of a flight to France, Strauss-Kahn was arrested and displayed before cameras in a "perp walk" that some French found slightly barbaric and prejudicial against his defense and standing in French politics.

A grand jury indicted him, and after a few nights in New York's notorious Rikers Island jail, he was eventually relocated in the swanky Tribeca neighborhood under house arrest.

Such a narrative could play well in France, where commentators immediately suggest that Strauss-Kahn, known as the "great seducer" of French politics for his charm and appetite for women, could have been set up by political opponents.

After the circus-like events of his arrest, Strauss-Khan was released on $1 million cash bail and a $5 million bond, and is under house arrest in a townhouse in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, where he is equipped with an electronic monitoring device and under the 24-hour watch of armed guards. The arrangements are costing Strauss-Kahn $250,000 a month.

Australian new home sales fell 0.2% in May from April, according to a joint report by the Housing Industry Association--a representative group for home construction firms--and building products manufacturer Jeld-Wen.
Detached house sales lost 2.4%, with declines in four of Australia's six states, the report said.
The sale of apartments posted a third consecutive decline, falling by 2%, it said.
"The combination of supply-side obstacles, which include a lack of available finance, and softer demand, which is not helped by incessant chatter about a fictitious house price bubble, is reflected in new home building indicators being well down," said HIA Chief Economist Harley Dale.

Australia's housing sector has been floundering in 2011 as higher interest rates, flooding in Queensland and stretched affordability have cooled demand. This comes as foreign hedge funds and even the International Monetary Fund have claimed the market could be 10% or more overvalued.

"In the absence of policy action, it is hard to see this situation turning around in the foreseeable future," Dale said.

"In Australia, home prices in 2011 have fallen the most in three years, pitting local banks which say the drop will be short lived against foreign investors betting it's the start of a bursting bubble," explains Kathy Lien, Director of Currency Research at censored.

"Australia's four biggest lenders, which account for 87 percent of outstanding mortgages, are forecasting prices will be supported by a housing shortage, population growth and an economy with near full-employment," she adds.
