Protests Against Antipiracy Bills Take to the Streets
Reply
On Wednesday, as many sites around the Web participated in virtual protests against two Congressional antipiracy bills, some opponents to the legislation took their demonstrations offline and into the real world.
The New York Tech Meetup, an eight-year-old trade organization that has nearly 20,000 members, called for those who oppose the proposed bills to rally in Midtown Manhattan outside the offices of Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, who co-sponsored some of the proposed legislation.
A few hundred protesters gathered in metal pens that the police had set up on the sidewalk.

New Laws Possible In Wake of MF Globalâs Demise
Reply
Lawmakers are considering new policies aimed at preventing a repeat of the MF Global debacle, in which the futures brokerage firm misused an estimated $1.2 billion in customer money as it collapsed.
The Senate Agriculture Committeeâs decision to explore potential regulatory changes follows pleas from farmers, cattle ranchers and other futures industry customers who seek stronger protections for their money. As an initial step, the committeeâs chairwoman, Senator Debbie Stabenow, sent roughly 20 letters on Wednesday to some of the industryâs biggest players, seeking suggestions for new policies.
âThe MF Global bankruptcy has raised questions about the regulatory framework that protects these markets,â Ms. Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, said in the letter.

Gold prices could rise this week, with resistance at $1,680. If prices settle above this level, gold could test $1,700. Profit-taking at these levels could drive prices back toward $1,620. Physical demand for gold in China is expected to rise this week, ahead of Chinaâs Lunar New Year next week. Physical demand in India could soften however, as the govern-ment raised import taxes on the metal to 2% of the value from a flat rate of Rs.300 ($5.93) for 10 grams. At todayâs gold price the new import tax stands at $10.70 for 10 grams of gold. Open interest in the nearby ac-tive February Comex gold contract declined to 16.8 million ounces on 13 January from 21.5 million ounces on 6 January. An increase in prices accompanied by a decline in open interest suggests that market partici-pants were closing out their short positions. Total open interest rose toward the end of last week, after declining in the first half, to 42.7 million ounces, up from 41.8 million ounces on 6 January.

The cycle looks like this: time passes and the crisis deepens. Markets, eternal creatures of habit, begin to reflect the ensuing fear. Then, just as things appear ready to unravel, there is a reprieve, as red headlines race across the screen: "Sarkozy and Merkel to Meet at Deauville", "Obama Phones Cameron", or "Christine Lagarde Waves from Bus". With Greek default (the kind where even EU ministers will admit such) looking more likely, markets move on to Portugal, where the 10-year bond yield hits a euro-era high of 14.49%. The yield is about 200 bps higher since Friday's S&P downgrade which lowered the country's paper to junk status.
Fitch could downgrade Italy by two notches, senior director Alessandro Settepani says, adding that the agency's committee will assess the country's rating "on the basis of refinancing levels and measures for growth." Fitch has already said it will probably downgrade Italy by the end of this month.

ALERT- U.S. TIC Data
Today's TIC data confirmed what Zero Hedge readers have now known for quite some time: namely that foreigners are selling US paper. And while we have used contemporaneous Custody Account data from the Fed to present that in the past 7 weeks foreigners have sold a record amount of bonds, we now get confirmation via TIC that in November the selling continued, especially at the biggest non-Fed holder of US paper, China, which saw its holdings down to $1,132.6 billion, the lowest in the past year.
Yet where the selling is just relentless is in Russia, which has quite demonstratively slashed its US Treasury holdings in half in the past year from $176 billion to under $80 billion. Putin is not happy, and is not afraid to show it.

The COMEX is no longer a credible marketplace.
Reply
âYou now have international funds, whose compliance departments are saying to them, âYou can no longer trade on the Comex because the CME did not back client accounts.â There are a tremendous number of international funds and hedge funds that can no longer trade on the COMEX as of the first of this year because of compliance reasons and no one is talking about this. This is huge news.

EUROPE'S woes could be Australia's gain.
