Jan. 18—The land Down Under has a lot to boast about—strong domestic economic growth, a healthy fiscal picture and robust commodity exports—primarily to China and other Asian nations. In fact, during the recent global recession, Australia was the only industrialized nation that did not fall into recession. Looking ahead into 2012, Nomura forecasts a 4.0% gross domestic product (GDP) rate for Australia.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) boasts the highest official monetary policy rate in the industrialized world —currently at 4.25% That compares to 2.50% for the New Zealand dollar, 1.00% for the euro and zero to 0.25% for the U.S. dollar

Protests Against Antipiracy Bills Take to the Streets
Reply
On Wednesday, as many sites around the Web participated in virtual protests against two Congressional antipiracy bills, some opponents to the legislation took their demonstrations offline and into the real world.

The New York Tech Meetup, an eight-year-old trade organization that has nearly 20,000 members, called for those who oppose the proposed bills to rally in Midtown Manhattan outside the offices of Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten E. Gillibrand, who co-sponsored some of the proposed legislation.

A few hundred protesters gathered in metal pens that the police had set up on the sidewalk.

New Laws Possible In Wake of MF Global’s Demise
Reply
Lawmakers are considering new policies aimed at preventing a repeat of the MF Global debacle, in which the futures brokerage firm misused an estimated $1.2 billion in customer money as it collapsed.

The Senate Agriculture Committee’s decision to explore potential regulatory changes follows pleas from farmers, cattle ranchers and other futures industry customers who seek stronger protections for their money. As an initial step, the committee’s chairwoman, Senator Debbie Stabenow, sent roughly 20 letters on Wednesday to some of the industry’s biggest players, seeking suggestions for new policies.

“The MF Global bankruptcy has raised questions about the regulatory framework that protects these markets,” Ms. Stabenow, Democrat of Michigan, said in the letter.

Gold prices could rise this week, with resistance at $1,680. If prices settle above this level, gold could test $1,700. Profit-taking at these levels could drive prices back toward $1,620. Physical demand for gold in China is expected to rise this week, ahead of China’s Lunar New Year next week. Physical demand in India could soften however, as the govern-ment raised import taxes on the metal to 2% of the value from a flat rate of Rs.300 ($5.93) for 10 grams. At today’s gold price the new import tax stands at $10.70 for 10 grams of gold. Open interest in the nearby ac-tive February Comex gold contract declined to 16.8 million ounces on 13 January from 21.5 million ounces on 6 January. An increase in prices accompanied by a decline in open interest suggests that market partici-pants were closing out their short positions. Total open interest rose toward the end of last week, after declining in the first half, to 42.7 million ounces, up from 41.8 million ounces on 6 January.

With Greek default (the kind where even EU ministers will admit such) looking more likely, markets move on to Portugal, where the 10-year bond yield hits a euro-era high of 14.49%. The yield is about 200 bps higher since Friday's S&P downgrade which lowered the country's paper to junk status.

Fitch could downgrade Italy by two notches, senior director Alessandro Settepani says, adding that the agency's committee will assess the country's rating "on the basis of refinancing levels and measures for growth." Fitch has already said it will probably downgrade Italy by the end of this month.

EUR/USD maintained a foothold above the 1.28 handle aided by several bits of commentary out of Europe. The IMF issued a formal statement on resources to clarify earlier speculation, and confirmed it needed to raise $500B in new resources (including the prior $200B commitment from EU) and explore options on financing. Finland and the EU were said to be nearing an agreement to approve ESM launch in July.

    ALERT- U.S. TIC Data

Today's TIC data confirmed what Zero Hedge readers have now known for quite some time: namely that foreigners are selling US paper. And while we have used contemporaneous Custody Account data from the Fed to present that in the past 7 weeks foreigners have sold a record amount of bonds, we now get confirmation via TIC that in November the selling continued, especially at the biggest non-Fed holder of US paper, China, which saw its holdings down to $1,132.6 billion, the lowest in the past year.

Yet where the selling is just relentless is in Russia, which has quite demonstratively slashed its US Treasury holdings in half in the past year from $176 billion to under $80 billion. Putin is not happy, and is not afraid to show it.

MONEY TALKS: So Why Is The UK Rated Triple-A?
    Reply
(Dow Jones via eFXnews) Why was France downgraded by Standard & Poor's last week, while the U.K. got to keep its triple-A rating?

After all, the U.K. has had a worse recession, has a bigger deficit, has had higher inflation and has almost as big a total government debt load relative to GDP, while having a more heavily indebted private sector.

The difference, Keynesians say, is that ....

Australian dollar makes European assets cheaper

Monthly triangle breakouts (which presumably everyone is looking at to formulate their bullish stance on the Aud) are frequently a false break when they occur so close to the nose)

Australian dollar makes European assets cheaper
    Reply
EUROPE'S woes could be Australia's gain.
The crisis in the debt-ridden eurozone and the strength of the Australian dollar open the door for local companies to buy assets cheaper in Europe, according to Barclays Capital.

The Australian dollar hit a 27-year high against the British pound
    Reply
THE dollar soared to a 27-year high against the British pound and a 24-year high against the euro and its precursor currencies as Australia emerged as a safe haven for global currency investors looking to diversify outside the troubled eurozone region.

With China data effectively leading markets to price out expectations of a hard landing, prospects for the dollar remain solid especially with both investment and consumption the key drivers of the Chinese economy,” BNP Paribas said.

The EUR/USD will likely be capped at Tuesday's high of 1.2810 in Asia as demand for sell-on-rally remains strong amid lingering concerns over the European debt crisis, says Osao Iizuka, head of FX trading at Sumitomo Trust & Banking.

Europe needs growth, not austerity, says Jim O'Neill of Goldman Sachs Asset Management. Fiscal tightening, as prescribed by Germany, could weaken growth and lead to larger deficits, he says.

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs. Interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading.

    Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.
