ICAP: Clients' Swiss Franc Deals After EBS Error Wed "Will Stand"
Reply
(Dow Jones via eFXnews) Brokerage ICAP PLC (IAP.LN) will not automatically cancel any Swiss franc trades that clients conducted after its EBS currency-trading system placed an accidental bid into the market Wednesday, a spokesman said Thursday.

"The deals are good deals, regardless of the trigger," he said, adding that it is up to clients whether they choose to write off any transactions.

EBS--the world's biggest bank-to-bank currencies trading system--rumbled the markets Wednesday by accidentally loading up a price for the euro against the Swiss franc that was 0.5% above the prevailing rate. The firm informed ....

Trade Talk- Whats Moving Markets

john, i think the distinct lack of bad news is the "news" behind the move. That said there's not much of a move yet, but there is a huge amount of short positions ripe to be squeezed, easy money for some in a sense. So up to 1.31 maybe be easy going but further than that I'm not so sure as there's still plenty happy to sell upticks since essentially nothing really has changed, rather the market has started to give a little benefit of the doubt whereas last year it was giving any slack whatsoever. Back to the trading, the market has had a habit of running moves in a matter of days so nothing can be ruled out as far as time and distance travelled are concerned

MF Global Commodity Customers Must Be Paid First, CFTC Says
Reply
MF Global Inc. commodity customers must be paid before all other claimants, including the bankrupt parent company, according to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Court papers by the trustee for MF Global Holdings Ltd., Louis Freeh, contain “errors and misstatements of law” in arguing that commodity laws, which require that customers be “made whole” first, don’t apply to brokerage liquidations, the regulator said in a court filing today. Freeh, representing the parent company creditors, has said money due to them shouldn’t be “diverted” to customers.

If Freeh was right, “the senseless result would be to render inapplicable the key regulations of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in the largest commodity broker bankruptcy in U.S. history,” the CFTC said. The result would “strip” customers of a remedy, after they entrusted their assets to the brokerage relying on rules for segregating customer money

(Dow Jones via eFXnews) 2012 may be The Year That Broke The Risk Trade if its early action sets an enduring trend.

As the old year bowed out, the major financial markets could be split into two, well-correlated camps. When investors were risk averse, up went Treasurys, bunds and gilts, gold, the dollar and the yen. On the other side stood the euro, stocks, commodities and the currencies of their producers, poised for a bid when investors felt better about the future.

No longer.

Dimon, Blankfein Predict Market Rebound as Rivals Pull Back
Reply
Fourth-quarter earnings reported by the six largest U.S. banks show the industry suffered a third straight quarterly drop in combined trading and investment-banking revenue. On conference calls this week, analysts are pressing executives with a similar refrain: Is it a temporary rut or a lasting shift to smaller volumes, profits and pay?

“This is a big debate,” said Paul Miller, a former examiner for the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and an analyst at FBR Capital Markets in Arlington, Virginia. “A lot of bears are saying it is due to regulation and deleveraging, and some are saying it is cyclical. I think it’s some of both.”

Slew of U.S. data out on the N.Y. Open were generally positive. Housing Starts fell, but were better than expected. Permits, an indication about future housing data, were also better than expected. Keep in mind that weather in the U.S. has been much milder than expected and thus might be supporting the data. Initial Jobless claims tumbled as we emerged from end of year/holiday distortions. CPI data were more or less in line. On balance there was nothing in the reports to suggest that the economy is not improving. On balance, that SHOULD be USD positive over time although that is not the way the markets always trade in the short run. The Philly Fed Survey at the top of the hour is always closely watched.

In MF Global, JPMorgan again at center of a financial failure
    Reply
(Reuters) - In late October, as MF Global Holdings Ltd teetered toward bankruptcy, Jon Corzine phoned his close-knit circle of Wall Street friends for help.
His firm, facing demands from customers and other firms for cash, needed to sell billions of dollars in securities to raise the money. As the week progressed, MF Global executives came to believe that JPMorgan Chase & Co., one of MF Global's primary bankers and a middleman moving that cash, was dragging its feet in forwarding the funds.

Corzine phoned Barry Zubrow, then JPMorgan's chief risk officer, to question the slow payments. Corzine also called William Dudley, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, to update him on MF Global's status and told him that payments were slow to arrive from JPMorgan and others.

By adhering to procedure and not cutting MF Global any slack, JPMorgan was able to slow the delivery of funds, worsening MF Global's distress

Macho Urinal Game Makes a Splash in Japan

John/Jay....should install one here for friday fun :)
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
TOKYO (Reuters) - Three years ago the "Toylet" was just a pipe-dream for developers at Japanese video game maker Sega, but now the urinal video game has been rolled out at pubs across the nation.
Users target their urine at a sensor inside the toilet which measures volume and speed, with software then matching that to progress in a selection of five video games in a console mounted at the top of the urinal.

"At first, we thought it would really be only young people who would like this kind of game. But ... we're seeing this phenomenon where people are enjoying playing with it, regardless of age," said Hirotaka Machida, the console's lead producer.
At 150,000 yen ($2,000) for a single unit, Machida said the original plan had been to avoid the mass market, but tests in pubs and restaurants showed it had broad appeal.
An infra-red device cuts off play if gamers stray too far from the urinal, reducing the amount of mess, according to Sega, making it a hit with pub managers as well.

Hedge Funds May Sue Greece if It Tries to Force Loss
    Reply
LONDON — Hedge funds have been known to use hardball tactics to make money. Now they have come up with a new one: suing Greece in a human rights court to make good on its bond payments.
The novel approach would have the funds arguing in the European Court of Human Rights that Greece had violated bondholder rights, though that could be a multiyear project with no guarantee of a payoff. And it would not be likely to produce sympathy for these funds, which many blame for the lack of progress so far in the negotiations over restructuring Greece’s debts.

The Euro continued to grind higher against the major pairs against a more supportive background. The recent disclosure that the IMF sought to raise its lending resources and not complications from the Spanish and French bond auctions helped the EUR/USD to probe above the 1.29 handle for fresh 2-week highs. trend is your friend until it ends...

euro has been in a sharp but well defined downtrend from 1.40 end october 2011, its certainly due a corrective rebound if nothing else...generally corrections after such long and well defined trends are quite brutal during the early day of the breakout
at present levels the euro is right at the upper channel line of the downtrend and by friday this week I expect a sharp move since a breakout (anything above 1.2910) can target 1.3050, whilst a continuation of the downtrend will see a reversal and the 1.27 handle by fridays close.
I favour a break to the upside simply because I can't any fresh negative headlines for the euroarea this side of the weekend. We've had the downgrades, its too soon for the IMF to admit defeat in fund raising, there's been good economic news from China and Germany earlier this week. Its not beyond the realms to expect a corrective move to the upside and given the market poitioning, its going to be quite short but sharp with few short pullbacks. Its going to some fresh negative new to negate this scenario so that would be the risk here over the next day and a half.

The UK Pension Protection Fund (PPF) estimates that the 6,650 schemes eligible for entry to the PPF had a combined deficit at the end of last year of £255bn. This was up from £222bn in November and is a huge turn-around from the surplus seen as recently as the start of 2011.

This has been driven almost entirely by falling bond yields. While a rise in bond prices boosts firms’ pension fund assets, the bigger effect is to increase the present value of their future liabilities, which are discounted by gilt yields.

the bonds issuer is also the bonds buyer, then why they issue the bonds from the first place?

in other words, they print money nonstop and call it in other name periodically, so with such low yields isn't clear that being short bonds is the safest investment to avoid haircut?

there is only one trade to preserve your money, physical commodities and nothing else.

Summers has expressed interest in the job to White House officials and has backers inside the administration, including Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and current NEC Director Gene Sperling, said one of the people. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is also being considered, along with other candidates, said the other person. Both spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal White House deliberations.
