The yen hovered at one-month lows against the dollar in Asia on Wednesday, having suffered its biggest one-day fall since October's intervention after a break of technical levels forced sellers into the market.

Trade Talk- Whats Moving Markets
Repost...
Lots of the usual media chatter about the State of the Union Address this evening in Washington. This is typically a very partisan political address by the party in power. In the case of Obama, he will be setting the agenda and themes for his re-election campaign. Its rare for this speech to contain anything newsworthy or market-moving. We won't be giving up any sleep to watch it.

A key
focus of trade on Tuesday was EUR gains vs. the JPY. The USDJPY made
a quantum jump early in the day (in NYC) and then the EUR then made
major gains all day. The move might have been on another round of
EUR short covering?
-
Tuesday
saw better than expected EZ flash PMI data, and also vague unconfirmed
chatter about possible activity in the EURJPY cross. Oftentimes
fundamental news can be a trigger for price moves that had to happen
anyway.
-
The Asian session
continues to be subdued by ongoing Lunar New Year observations.
-
Greek sovereign debt
negotiations broke down after an impasse was reached on the interest rate on
the bonds set to replace existing ones. A 4% coupon works out to a
65% to 70% haircut for private holders while 3.75% works out to 75%
to 80% write-down.

FOREX FOCUS: Don't Take Euro Strength For Granted
Reply
(Dow Jones via eFXnews) The euro is still waiting for a firewall around Greece.
Without it, the risk of contagion remains and the single currency's current level looks unsustainable.
For a moment, it looked like the firewall was finally being built.
A front page report in the Financial Times should have set the pulses of euro bulls racing. German Chancellor Angela Merkel was said to be going along with plans for the European Financial Stability Facility and the European Stability Mechanism to run in tandem.
In other words, there would now be a....

The Art Of Extortion: Now At The IMF
Reply
Treasury Secretary “Hank†Paulson was the trailblazer with his proposal for TARP in September 2008.
When Congress didn’t go for it, markets fell off a cliff
In November, just after the G-20 meeting in Cannes, France, it was Greek Prime Minister Giorgios Papandreou’s turn. With a single sentence about a referendum on Greece's exit from the Eurozone, he knocked the world’s financial markets into a tailspin.
In early January, it was Greece’s new Prime Minister Lucas Papademos. He threatened the world with “disorderly default.â€
Now Christine Lagarde, managing director of the IMF, has stepped into the extortion racket herself and threatened that there would be another Great Depression

Around 1,000 jobs at the Coryton oil refinery in Essex are under threat after Swiss owner Petroplus filed for bankruptcy.
The refinery, which supplies 20% of fuel for south-east England, halted sales on Monday and told staff it was not sure when supplies would restart.
East of England MEP Richard Howitt said he feared petrol supplies would be affected.

You will be pard pressed to find many calling for a medium-term rise in the eurusd, which accounts for the cautious move above 1.30. However, unwinding is still going on as can be seen by firmer euro crosses today, which have created a tug-of-war with the dollar as it is firmer elsewhere out of offsets while eurusd stands close to unchanged on the day

India to pay gold instead of dollars for Iranian oil. Oil and gold markets stunned
DEBKAfile Exclusive Report January 23, 2012, 5:57 PM (GMT+02:00)
buyer of Iranian oil to agree to pay for its purchases in gold instead of the US dollar, DEBKAfile's intelligence and Iranian sources report exclusively. Those sources expect China to follow suit. India and China take about one million barrels per day, or 40 percent of Iran's total exports of 2.5 million bpd. Both are superpowers in terms of gold assets.
By trading in gold, New Delhi and Beijing enable Tehran to bypass the upcoming freeze on its central bank's assets and the oil embargo which the European Union's foreign ministers agreed to impose Monday, Jan. 23. The EU currently buys around 20 percent of Iran's oil exports.
The vast sums involved in these transactions are expected, furthermore, to boost the price of gold and depress the value of the dollar on world markets.
Iran's second largest customer after China, India purchases around $12 billion a year's worth of Iranian crude, or about 12 percent of its consumption. Delhi is to execute its transactions, according to our sources, through two state-owned banks: the Calcutta-based UCO Bank, whose board of directors is made up of Indian government and Reserve Bank of India representatives; and Halk Bankasi (Peoples Bank), Turkey's seventh largest bank which is owned by the government.

Suspicious SEC Handling of MF Global Documents Before Bond Offering Questioned
Reply
Critical documents related to MF Global’s financial condition appear to have been delayed for release by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) at an important time just before a MF Global floated a bond offering to professional investors. While possibly a coincidence, approximately the same time the documents in question were finally made public, MF Global professional account holders were beginning to flee the company, leading to an eventual liquidity crisis and the firm’s bankruptcy.

CHARTING MARKETS: The Aussie Dollar's Precarious Uptrend

(Dow Jones via eFXnews) The AUD/USD pair extended a nearly three-month uptrend earlier this session, but charts suggest technical momentum is slowing.
Unless the Aussie dollar moves decisively--and quickly--above Monday's uptrend high, US$1.0576, a trend reversal will be in place.
The Australian dollar--one of the market's favored gauges of general optimism--traded above $1.05 for the first time since the start of November, supported in part by lower volatility and rising commodity prices as well as softer inflation and rising loan growth from China.
But as it .......
