It's always dangerous to draw comparisons with what occurred in the past but looking what happened in the wake of Hurricane Katrina may help explain the trend in EUR/USD.
Hurricane Katrina struck in the last week of August 2005 and wrought damages of USD 108 billion. At the beginning of September 2005 EUR/USD was 1.2944, by November it had declined to 1.1647.
What I'm thinking is that US insurers will have claims on foreign re-insurers that will require the latter to buy USD to settle y these claims.
As to the magnitude of the required purchases, who knows, some estimates of the damage already are as high as USD 45 billion substantially less than Katrina but high nevertheless.

One Economist's Realistic Hurricane Post-Mortem
.
It is easy to build economical models from an armchair, of what will happen after the storm.
Did anyone think what to do for all those people who lost everything when the cold winter will set in?
This maybe another disaster if not addressed on time.
Also a recipe for social disorder, unless one expects Americans to accept their bad faith as do the Asians during calamities.

MISSING THE BOAT
As I read and digest the reports estimating the damage from the devastating storm. I sense that there are far too many economists out there who
are relying too heavily on past major hurricanes as they draw their conclusions from the current experience with Sandy....
The problem is two-fold. One is magnitude. The other is the demographic involved. With regards to magnitude, we are talking about 60 million people being affected, not three, or four or five million spread across corn and cotton fields in the south. There has not been such devastation affecting so many participants in the U.S. economy before. Were talking about New York. New Jersey, Connecticut and Philadelphia here — not Waco. When such masses do not go to the office, they then don't do what they usually do. which is buy their coffee at Starbucks. They don't line up for pizza and sushi. That spending is not coming back. ........................................
The other factor I mentioned was the demographic. We don't know how many Starbucks or Coaches there are in Waco or Galveston, but there are 255 in New York City Its not just size. It's also tastes. We are talking about the storm hitting the most free-spending consumers in America. And that is also because these are the states with the highest per capita incomes — the major states of the Northeast have on average household spending power that is 40% higher than in the deep south where storms and floods have historically been prevalent (again rendering comparisons with the past nearly totally useless when it comes to estimating near-term GDP impact).

Nonpartisan Tax Report Withdrawn After G.O.P. Protest
Reply
WASHINGTON — The Congressional Research Service has withdrawn an economic report that found no correlation between top tax rates and economic growth, a central tenet of conservative economy theory, after Senate Republicans raised concerns about the paper’s findings and wording. ..........
The report received wide notice from media outlets and liberals and conservative policy analysts when it was released on Sept. 14. It examined the historical fluctuations of the top income tax rates and the rates on capital gains since World War II, and concluded that those fluctuations did not appear to affect the nation’s economic growth.
“The reduction in the top tax rates appears to be uncorrelated with saving, investment and productivity growth. The top tax rates appear to have little or no relation to the size of the economic pie,” the report said. “However, the top tax rate reductions appear to be associated with the increasing concentration of income at the top of the income distribution.”

I am afraid that following that robotic bank indicator may blind your judgement, as I suspect that the trend for gold is still up for the next 24hrs, and that may result to losses if you still have any shorts.
Same with Joe who followed his time machine, and at a certain point a certain trader with a very deterministic point of view may find that his system too is not working.
When gold was at 1705 I was already calling for 1726, which took long time to reach. I could be wrong as well, but the longer point of view has some more to base on.
So let's hope for some more gains in gold.
........................................................................................
Pipol who were hardly hit by Sandy storm, will tend to vote for Mr. O., as many of them were impoverished overnight.
They are impressed by his help performance, and on the other side they are afraid Romney will throw them to the dogs.
O.-factor will help gold for sometime, and his re-election may be a sell on the fact(on top of that stock markets are due for a crash). An early crash will destroy the savings of many who were affected by the storm(and badly need money now), which is not favorable for O.
So Dow maybe is due for a drift for sometime.

Looks like 1728 may cap for today, but an upward blow of 15 to 20 $(from current levels) should not be discounted.

Overdue loans are a growing problem, and some analysts believe banks are actually hiding bad loans from their balance sheets.
This could be the start of a slow ride down for the Chinese economy.

Bend Over Boys...and Relax for Round Two

When MF Global toppled a year ago, chaos engulfed a Chicago trading floor. Customers were locked out of their accounts, later discovering that about $1 billion of their money had disappeared.
The debacle, which played out on the evening of Halloween, prompted federal authorities to immediately bear down on the brokerage firm and the broader futures trading industry.
But a year after a federal grand jury issued subpoenas and regulators vowed reforms, the largest bankruptcy since the financial crisis has begun to fade from Wall Street’s memory.
Federal authorities have all but cleared MF Global’s top executives of criminal wrongdoing, people briefed on the matter say. The government has yet to usher in a wider overhaul of futures trading rules, save for certain piecemeal policy changes. And the profit-making exchanges that rely on brokerage firms for business still police the futures industry, presenting potential conflicts of interest.
The slowing momentum for change has provided relief for the brokerage firms that dominate the futures trading industry. The Chicago companies, which largely dodged the humbling losses that scarred Wall Street in 2008, continue to cast MF Global as a fleeting distraction rather than a permanent black eye for their business.

Spot iron ore prices held near
$120 a tonne and sellers upped offers for imported cargoes to
top market China on Wednesday on hopes steel mills will continue
to lift production for the rest of the year amid a modest
revival in demand.
Iron ore is up nearly 15 percent in October, its second
monthly gain in a row, after a recovery in Chinese steel prices
in September encouraged producers to restock on the raw
material.
