NZD and AUD outlook: The NZ calendar today has electronic spending and possibly REINZ housing data, all minor for markets. Australia data is also minor and includes housing finance and an inflation gauge. Fedspeak tonight from Bernanke and other doves should attract attention.

* Kiwi last at 74.61 against last week's 75.39 yen, its highest since Sept 2008.

* Japan is Australia's second largest export market and fourth for New Zealand, so any pickup in growth there would likely be good for trade.

US LNG surge could hurt Australia: report
Reply
Australia stands to lose out if liquefied natural gas production increases in the United States, because of the high rate of export displacement as a result of the high cost of building new projects

The LNG surge is America is also being aided by a glut of shale gas.

Now it's Japan's turn: Honda in latest scare story over UK relationship to Brussels
Reply
It's been quite a week for the British debate on our relationship with Europe. Scare stories all over the place. The Germans have been poking their noses in. The Americans too. Nick Clegg (well, I suppose he has the right to). Whoever next? Why, the Japanese of course.

Honda is putting out a confused message on what Britain should do about it's relationship with the EU. They'd probably do better to sit this one out

Euro turning Greece and Spain into failed states
Reply
Jobless rates in Spain and Greece have reached staggering proportions. And as long as these countries retain the euro, the prospects of recovery are slim

Until the whole thing collapses (which it inevitably will) under the weight of its own contradictions, the most likely short and medium term scenario is for Greece and Spain to keep taking the pain and to retain the single currency.

Treasury Wont Mint Coin to Defy Debt Ceiling
Reply
WASHINGTON The Treasury Department said Saturday that it will not mint a trillion-dollar platinum coin to head off an imminent battle with Congress over raising the governments borrowing limit.

Neither the Treasury Department nor the Federal Reserve believes that the law can or should be used to facilitate the production of platinum coins for the purpose of avoiding an increase in the debt limit, Anthony Coley, a Treasury spokesman, said in a written statement.

On Scale of 0 to 500, Beijings Air Quality Tops Crazy Bad at 755

small price to pay for progress my friends. so what if half the child population of developed china has asthma and their physical fitness levels are on par with prison inmate in total isolation, at least they are making more money than their parents ever dreamed of and they will overcome the 'evil imperialists' within the next 15 years in terms of GDP output and quality of life.

Total sarcasm, modern China is a true tragedy and we are all responsible for it. Buying local is one way to overcome this horrifying trend. Anyways, as a forex trader I am surely not helping matters but I find the situation so dire that I would rather not participate directly by trading on a large scale with Chinese factories whenever possible.

On Scale of 0 to 500, Beijings Air Quality Tops Crazy Bad at 755
Reply
BEIJING One Friday more than two years ago, an air-quality monitoring device atop the United States Embassy in Beijing recorded data so horrifying that someone in the embassy called the level of pollution Crazy Bad in an infamous Twitter post. That day the Air Quality Index, which uses standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, had crept above 500, which was supposed to be the top of the scale.

So what phrase is appropriate to describe Saturdays jaw-dropping reading of 755 at 8 p.m., when all of Beijing looked like an airport smokers lounge?
The embassys @BeijingAir Twitter feed said the level of toxicity in the air was Beyond Index, the terminology for levels above 500; the Crazy Bad label was used just once, in November 2010, before it was quickly deleted by the embassy from the Twitter feed.

Other Beijing residents online described the air as postapocalyptic, terrifying and beyond belief.

Paying the Price, but Often Deducting It
Reply
THE numbers seem eye-popping. So many billions here for supposed mortgage abuses, so many billions there for questionable foreclosures.

But theres more than meets the eye to the big legal settlements youve been reading about involving some of the nations biggest banks.

Actually, theres less than meets the eye.

The dollar signs are big, but they arent as big as they look, at least for the banks. Thats because some or all of these payments will probably be tax-deductible. The banks can claim them as business expenses. Taxpayers, therefore, will likely lighten the banks loads.

There is nothing new about corporations reaping tax benefits from payments made to remedy wrongdoing. Every so often, though, the topic stirs outrage. After the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, for example, BP received a $10 billion tax windfall by writing off $37.2 billion in cleanup expenses.

Aaron Swartz, a wizardly programmer who as a teenager helped develop code that delivered ever-changing Web content to users and who later became a steadfast crusader to make that information freely available, was found dead on Friday in his New York apartment.

At 14, Mr. Swartz helped create RSS, the nearly ubiquitous tool that allows users to subscribe to online information. He later became an Internet folk hero, pushing to make many Web files free and open to the public.

But in July 2011, he was indicted on federal charges of gaining illegal access to JSTOR, a subscription-only service for distributing scientific and literary journals, and downloading 4.8 million articles and documents, nearly the entire library.

Charges in the case, including wire fraud and computer fraud, were pending at the time of Mr. Swartzs death, carrying potential penalties of up to 35 years in prison and $1 million in fines.

Carmen M. Ortiz, a United States attorney, pressed on, saying that stealing is stealing, whether you use a computer command or a crowbar, and whether you take documents, data or dollars.

Riot Breaks Out At Housing Assistance Event In Metro Detroit

January 12, 2013 12:50 PM

TAYLOR (WWJ) - An event designed to help assist Michigan families with housing expenses turned into a chaotic scene after there was a mad rush to collect Section 8 Housing Choice Vouchers.

The incident happened Saturday morning at the Wayne County Family Health Services Center on Eureka Road, between Beech Daly and Inkster roads in Taylor where thousands of people were waiting to get housing vouchers, many who had been waiting outside in the cold since the night before.

Reports say the amount of people who showed up looking for assistance heavily outweighed the number of vouchers to be distributed. As the night was fading away and the sun started to shine, the crowd continued to grow as more and more people arrived. According to reports, only 1,000 vouchers were available for distribution. An estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people were in attendance.

When it came time for the vouchers to be distributed, police said there was a mad rush for the door, with people jockeying for position to be the first inside the building. Officers tried to control the crowd, but couldnt. Fearing the situation was more than they could handle, event organizers shut the entire thing down and turned off the lights inside the building. Witnesses say thats when things really got ugly.

Star Lee, of Romulus, described the scene as complete chaos.

People just dont have order to themselves, you know what I mean? People were fighting and throwing chairs, and thats just not necessary. We were asked to just come and line up and, you know, make things simple. They shut it down before it even got started and its just sad because some people really needed this help, this assistance, she said.

Candice Wacasey, of Taylor, said she was frightened.

When the lights went out, it went horrible. People started trampling over people, there was a disabled lady that was in a wheelchair and they was trying to knock her over to get in front of her. I mean, just crazy, she said.

Lenny Syer, of Melvindale, said some people lost all inhibitions, even muscling small children out-of-the-way.

There was people who was physically putting their hands on peoples childs (sic) and moving them. It was unbelievable, he said.

Additional help was called in from Michigan State Police, who helped Taylor police control the melee and disperse the crowd. Four people were arrested, but police say no one was injured.

Police say the event will be rescheduled, although specific details still need to be worked out.

Due to the high demand of the Section 8 vouchers, we will meet with HUD Representatives to discuss the series of events, re-evaluate the distribution method and implement a process that ensures a greater level of efficiency and safety, Mary Radamacher, Director of the Taylor Housing Commission, said in a statement.

Some of those in attendance Saturday said they hope organizers will be extra cautious and bring in additional security to insure things go differently next time.

According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program is the federal governments major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly and the disabled to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord directly by the government on behalf of the participating family, which then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.

The maximum housing assistance is generally the lesser of the payment standard minus 30 percent of the familys monthly adjusted income, or the gross rent for the unit minus 30 percent of monthly adjusted income, according to HUD
