Department of Homeland Security: Disable Java ‘Unless It Is Absolutely Necessary’
Reply
Even after Oracle fixed a serious security flaw in its Java software on Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security warned that the fix was not sufficient and urged users to disable Java on their Web browsers.

“Unless it is absolutely necessary to run Java in Web browsers, disable it,” the agency said in an updated alert on Monday. “This will help mitigate other Java vulnerabilities that may be discovered in the future.”

Oracle, which develops Java software, was forced to fix the security hole Sunday after the department issued this rare alert late Thursday: “Java 7 Update 10 and earlier contain an unspecified vulnerability that can allow a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system. This and previous Java vulnerabilities have been widely targeted by attackers, and new Java vulnerabilities are likely to be discovered.”

Oracle has not answered repeated requests for comment.

Java, a widely used programming language, is installed on more than three billion devices running under various operating systems and has long been dogged by security problems. In a report, Kaspersky Lab, a Russian antivirus company, said that half of all cyberattacks last year were caused by Oracle’s Java software.

U.S. Attorney, Under Fire Over Suicide
Reply
WASHINGTON -- A petition urging President Barack Obama to fire U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz for prosecutorial overreach in her office's case against Aaron Swartz had garnered more than 10,000 signatures in the few days since the open-democracy advocate's death. A leading academic has also called for an independent inquiry into her office's conduct.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Scott Garland and Stephen Heymann, working under Ortiz, filed 13 felony charges against Swartz, seeking decades of imprisonment.

Ortiz, who was appointed by Obama, is close to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

Top DOJ brass have also looked fondly on Heymann, bestowing him with the Attorney General's Award for Distinguished Service in 2010.

The Obama administration has vowed to respond to any We the People petition eclipsing 25,000 signatures.

dc CB the charade "that the bank can still hold the original pledged security on its books for Fed "supervision" purposes, even as it obtains fungible cash equivalents via repo"

ahhh .... supervision. There are two kinds of governance: good and bad. When bad governance reaches the vestiges of law-making and law-enforcement and govt becomes complicit, the end is closer than the distance already travelled particularly when losses (or wink wink penalties) are relatively benign to the significance of systemic transgressions of controls.

It Took Algos 4 Seconds To Fully Process The Flashing Red DELL Headline
Reply
At precisely 14:04:08 a flashing red Bloomberg headline hit that "DELL IS SAID TO BE IN TALKS TO GO PRIVATE."
considering the "two sources" used by Bloomberg gave virtually no details on who the buyers are, or what the vision for the pro forma private company will be

What we do know, is something completely unrelated. Courtesy of Nanex, who have broken down the trades from the pre-headline prices of $10.90 to the halt price of just under $12.00, it appears that today's robotic algo brains take no more and no less than 4 seconds to fully process flashing red headlines. This is how long it took to send the stock in a straight line from the bottom of the range to the top

To anyone who blinked and missed the move: condolences

Gold Weekly Technical Outlook

Comex Gold (GC)

Gold's recovery from 1626 extended further last week as consolidation continued. But with 1695.4 resistance holds, deeper fall is still expected. Below 1626 will extend the whole decline from 1798.1 to 1478.3/1577.4 support zone. On the upside, though, break of 1695.4 will indicate reversal and bring stronger rebound back to 1755.0 resistance and above.

In the bigger picture, price actions from 1923.7 high are viewed as a medium term consolidation pattern. There is no indication that such consolidation is finished, and more range trading could be seen. In any case, downside of any falling leg should be contained by 1478.3/1577.4 support zone and bring rebound. Meanwhile, break of 1792.7/1804.4 resistance zone will argue that the long term up trend is possibly resuming for a new high above 1923.7.

according to 0bama

Here's a solution(!) that has been proposed by some econo.

These benefits will be paid by and Gov IOU...the IOU itself will not be negotiable....However it can be take to a "Bank", and this bank will "buy" the IOU for less than 100cents on the dollar....the idea being that the "Bank" knows that eventually the Gov will come across with the full 100cents.

Waiting to see this floated more agressively. Never will it be labeled for what it is -- more transfer of tax dollars to the Banks.

Mtl JP 18:52 GMT January 14, 2013
according to 0bama

according to 0bama:
..."If congressional Republicans refuse to pay America’s bills on time, Social Security checks, and veterans benefits will be delayed.

We might not be able to pay our troops, or honor our contracts with small business owners. Food inspectors, air traffic controllers, specialist who track down loose nuclear materials wouldn't get their paychecks. Investors around the world will ask if the United States of America is in fact a safe bet. Markets could go haywire, interest rates would spike for anybody who borrows money. Every homeowner with a mortgage, every student with a college loan, every small business owner who wants to grow and hire.

It would be a self-inflicted wound on the economy. It would slow down our growth, might tip us into recession. And ironically it would probably increase our deficit. So to even entertain the idea of this happening, of the United States of America not paying its bills, is irresponsible. It’s absurd. As the speaker said two years ago, it would be, and I’m quoting Speaker Boehner now, “a financial disaster, not only for us, but for the worldwide economy.” So we’ve got to pay our bills. .../..

It could not happen to a nicer bunch , could it ?

EURO/USD

The EUR/USD sees a limited bearish correction this Monday, as risk appetite fades across the boards. However, the common currency remains strong compared to other majors, as the EUR reached fresh multi-week highs against GBP and CHF, while the EUR/USD trades around its weekly opening, barely affected for dollar short term strength. The hourly chart presents a slightly bearish tone, as indicators hover around there midlines while price remains below a flat 20 SMA, but the downside remains limited. In the 4 hours chart indicators are slowly easing from extreme overbought readings, yet far from signaling further downside corrections. As long as above the 1.3290/1.3300 area, the downside seems contained, with 1.3370/80 still the key resistance to overcome to see an extension towards 1.3485.
