BBH - $EURUSD: A convincing break of $1.35 could spur a move toward $1.38
Reply
BBH - "We had been persuaded by the potential double top in the euro near $1.34 and the divergence in the RSI that the dollar's gains were likely to broaden. However, news that the banks repayment of the LTRO funds was greater than expected, and the backing up of Euribor rates, pushed the euro through the ceiling. The next immediate target is near $1.35, which also corresponds with a 50% retracement of the euro's decline from its last attempt at $1.50 back in May 2011. The $1.3400 area should now provide support for the break out.
For medium and longer term participants this $1.35 area is important. It appears to be the neckline of a potential large head and shoulders bottom pattern that would, if valid, suggest a target near $1.45. More immediately, a convincing break of $1.35 could spur a move toward $1.38. We expect the Swiss franc to lag behind the euro in the move against the dollar."

France 'totally bankrupt', says labour minister Michel Sapin
Reply
Michel Sapin made the gaffe in a radio interview, which left French President Francois Hollande battling to undo the potential reputational damage.

“There is a state but it is a totally bankrupt state,” Mr Sapin said. “That is why we had to put a deficit reduction plan in place, and nothing should make us turn away from that objective

Euro continued its rally against the comm dollars as AUD/USD slid below the 1.0400 figure while EUR/AUD rose to a fresh half year high of 1.2950. Part of the reason for the rally is the massive unwind of the Aussie "safe harbor" trade, as the risk of EZ fracture has now passed investors are repatriating funds back into euros on hopes of an economic recovery in the region.

On the other hand, the Aussie is not longer the beneficiary of the risk trade as the currency's correlation with global equities declined markedly. Although stock prices have performed well in January the Aussie has lagged badly as investors reassess the country's prospects amidst lower capital expenditures on new mining projects and its still high exchange rates which weigh on Australia's competitiveness.

Recent data from Down Under has been disappointing and tomorrow's LEI report may confirm a further slowdown in activity which pressure the unit lower towards the 1.0350 level as speculators continue to dump their long AUD/USD positions.

Americans seem to be falling in love with stocks all over again.

Today, as the Fed's balance sheet crosses $3 trillion, and the global central banks have pumped a total of some $15 trillion into the markets, Tom Lee ws back on CNBC with what is his most permabullish prediction ever: he now expects the S&P to generate some 150 in earnings to which he applies a 17x multiple.

His conclusion "If you put a 17 multiple on $150, the S&P really sort of peaks around 2,400 or 2,500." In Dow terms, this means a Dow Jones Industrial Average of, drumroll, 20000. He does, caveat it, however: "that's obviously 4 years away."

Euro was firmer in the New York session as dealers reassess the upcoming ECB three-month tender amounts. The current poll for the 3-month MRO on Wednesday is €10B v prior expectations for €6.2B, which suggests that the banks would not roll over into shorter-dated paper and may mean the European banking sector is healthier.

The possible candidate for the next BoJ Governorship also said that many see 95 yen to a dollar as a desirable rate.
    .........................................................................................

He is just trying to push the Mkt. by words to 95.

"Oh just give me 95 that's all, for me it will do".

But any move to 95 Tech. will cause a run to 100 and above, and then he will say, that the value of the yen is decided by market forces.

So we have to observe if other CB's will allow such a move.
For the time 91.20 is guarded.

In order to prevent this run, the Mkt. must cause some Tech. damage to the USD/JPY chart.

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

    .
I think one should not ignore the weekend fundamental that the Gov. of BOJ, which bactracked from the original target of 2% inflation which he said is unattainable this time, and he reduced his target to 1%, so this was too damaging.
Tech. ~91.20, is an important front line, which I am not sure the BOJ want to breach this time as Yen may rise too fast to 100 and above.
WE can learn that we have a fight to appreciate the yen through all the crosses.
Yen is heavily short and unexpected surprises should not be discounted.
For the time I'll adapt the 350pips possiblity mentioned B4 by BC, as it is long time due.
In fact I expect the RET. eventually to net 2x350=700 from the top. Who knows maybe unbelieveable dips:)

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

RF- thanks for your participation in this discussion thread. We would love to see wider participation!

My approach to the market is more from the fundamental side, but I recognize that TRADING must have a technical component. My open question to the forum

If I want to short the JPY,
    1) Does anyone think this is still a good idea?
    2) What currency should I trade it against?
    3) At what level should I sell it against?
    4) Where should I place my protective stop?
    5) What in your opinion is a realistic target?

    Thanks.

The rhetoric on currency wars has seemed to pick up in the financial press, particularly after the JPY's 10-week decline against the major pairs. CURRENCY WARS: Weak JPY policy persists. Key U.S. employment data due at the end of the week
    Reply

    • HIGH IMPACT ITEMS: US- Durable Goods, Pending Homes Sales.
    • CURRENCY WARS: Japan continues to favor a weakening of the JPY as one of several means to encourage economic growth. At the end of last week, it was announced that Japanese December core CPI remained in contraction declining by -0.2% y/y.  Chatter the REAL target for PM Abe is a weaker JPY as the 2.0% BOJ target is not realistic. Its our best guess that Tokyo is targeting a USDJPY level of around 100.00. That would work out to a rough devaluation of the JPY vs. the USD of 20-30% from previously prevailing  levels.
    • Data from Europe remains mixed with stronger than forecast German IFO data on Friday reinforcing a robust ZEW survey earlier in the week. On the other hand, French flash manufacturing PMI were exceptionally weak,  while a triple-dip recession in the U.K. is possible.
    • U.S. data recently have been mixed but generally stronger. Key employment data are due at the end of the week.
    • The markets are currently trying to decipher the likely impact of repayments of special ECB LTRO funding for banks which will start this week. Depending on HOW the funds are repaid, the repayments could result in a tightening of ECB monetary policy.
    • The key EURUSD 20-day moving average is 1.3250. the 10-yr bund is 1.65%, +1 bp.  European bourses are mixed. U.S. shares are steady. The U.S. 10-yr  is 1.94%,  +1bp.
    • Key Far East bourses were mixed. The 10-yr JGB is 0.75%, +2bp. the USDJPY 20-day average is 88.25. EURJPY 20-day average is 116.82.

It is not unreasonable to suspect that CB's like the yen to revalue and gold to devalue.
So the correlation between the two may not last forever.

Japan to boost military headcount amid china island row

That is what Japan needs the money for(and so the need to devalue), and the US will love it, as it will be a great opportunity for selling them some expensive military hardware, and building a military power against China.

Indeed how stupid this Gov. is.
The population is aging, and on top of that, they risk the life of the best of young people.
Usually fascist are intelligent people, but this Gov. are just stupid.
    .........................................................................................
(Reuters) - Japan is set to boost the number of military personnel, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said on Sunday, as the new government led by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) tackles a territorial spat with China over East China Sea islets.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe led the LDP to a landslide election victory last month, promising to beef up the military and stand tough in the dispute over tiny, uninhabited islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

The number of personnel, now standing at about 225,000, will increase by 287 in the next fiscal year starting in April, Onodera told reporters after meeting Finance Minister Taro Aso for the final budgetary negotiations.

Onodera said the increase was the biggest in two decades. The figure represents an expansion of about 0.1 percent.

"This would allow us to firmly reinforce our surveillance activities in the southwest," Onodera said.

A break of today Hi will not end in 95, but a price run above 100.

The non stop price rise on the other hand is prone to a Ret. which seems to be of about 350pips down to 87.70.

Because of the lengthy rise I suspect a net(not at once) of 2x350=700 decline to 50% of the last big wave.
