January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

John & NY JM .. agreed, the market appears to be in agreement at the present as well although daily trade volumes are declining which may indicate the major players are either being very cautious or feel the pairs are reaching their top. (see the chart posted)

JPY pairs closed the day up +428 pips (+/-), with the AUDJPY being the only pair that didn't gain on the Yen weakness even though the AUD Idx pairs closed the day off +580 pips apprx.

Holding a very cautious long bias on JPY pairs ahead of Friday's data.

Best
Chief

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

It is the pace more than the level that will spark concern.

Currently the path of least resistance in via JPY crosses, which seem to spark the least criticism since it takes the US out if the picture.

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

We have heard nothing to suggest that Tokyo is ready to put the brakes on the Yen slide. It seems they have abandoned the 2.0% inflation target and QE is hard to get done.

Their best policy tool is the weak yen policy and its my personal opinion that they are probably shooting ultimately for a USDJPY price of something in the range of 100/USD.

Comments/opinions welcome.

AUD and NZD Outlooks: The FOMC announcement an hour from now will be followed closely, our expectation being a confirmation of commitment to stimulus. Then 30 minutes later we have the RBNZ’s OCR Review, where the OCR will remain on hold at 2.5%, with a slight dovish tone to the press release (reflecting low inflation and high NZD) a possibility. Australia’s Q4 terms of trade is reported today.

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

A good look at the flows. The EUR pairs as they appear to be a strong driver against the Yen.

Notice the NZD is suffering the most, then the JPY, then AUD. A lack interest in the USD is also interesting.

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

JPY pairs are on the rise again. A few observations ..

the main drivers are the EUR, CHF & GBP, while the remaining pairs are up only marginally and the NZDJPY is flat for the day.

The pairs are within a few pips of reaching a previous high set in August of 2009.

Suggest trading the main drivers and avoiding the rest for now as the market's concentration is on the main ones.

  • CURRENCY WARS: The JPY has weakened vs. the USD and the EUR again today and the softness in the unit has generated offset demand for the EUR which has seen EURUSD rise.  Option protection schemes at EURUSD 1.3500 have finally been breached.
  • Markets await the Fed policy decision at 19:15 GMT today and a slew of data reports at the back end of the week. The Fed policy decision will have been made before the full January employment data is known. Key employment data are due on Friday.
  • ADP private employment and 4Q12 advance GDP data are due on the N.Y. open.
  • Today markets once again will have to figure out the likely impact of repayments of special ECB LTRO funding for banks. Depending on HOW the funds are repaid, the repayments could result in an implicit  tightening of ECB monetary policy.
  • The key EURUSD 20-day moving average is 1.3277. the 10-yr bund is 1.70%, +1 bp.  European bourses are mixed. U.S. shares are mixed. The U.S. 10-yr  is 2.02%,  +6bp.
