By breaching the 91.25, the BOJ signals a target to above 100.
Another liar is the one who claimed 95 will be satisfactory:)
Japanese politicians and bankers have proven themselves as systematic chain liars and it is hard to predict the reaction of other unhappy players after today rise.
It is possible the market volatility will go wild for today.

b) The nation's top financial regulators on Thursday met to discuss and evaluate whether certain financial firms should be designated as "systemically important", as part of an effort to subject potentially risky large institutions to gradually increasing capital levels. The Financial Stability Oversight Council, made up of bank and securities regulators, is charged with designating certain large institutions as systemically important.
The “very sorry” Wasendorf said at the hearing that “I fully deserve” whatever sentence was imposed.
How come the "regulators" walk away free and without any responsability ?
How credible is/will be the "regulators" evaluation of financial firms as "systemically important" ?

Texas set to 'terminate' trooper following roadside cavity searches
'I was totally violated'
In the lawsuit, Dobbs said the trooper conducted the cavity search on the roadside, illuminated by the police car's headlights, in full view of any passing motorists.
"This has been an eye-opening experience for me. I've never been pulled over, never searched like this. I was totally violated over there a few minutes ago... this is so embarrassing to me," Angel Dobbs said on the video.
"I've never been so humiliated or so violated or felt so molested in my entire life," Angel Dobbs told NBC 5.

Syria warns of "surprise" response to Israel attack
BEIRUT/AMMAN (Reuters) - Syria warned on Thursday of a possible "surprise" response to Israel's attack on its territory and Russia condemned the air strike as an unprovoked violation of international law.
Damascus could take "a surprise decision to respond to the aggression of the Israeli warplanes", Syrian ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul-Karim Ali said a day after Israel struck against Syria.
"Syria is engaged in defending its sovereignty and its land," Ali told a website of the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Syria and Israel have fought several wars and in 2007 Israeli jets bombed a suspected Syrian nuclear site, without a military response from Damascus.
Diplomats, Syrian rebels and regional security sources said on Wednesday that Israeli jets had bombed a convoy near the Lebanese border, apparently hitting weapons destined for Hezbollah. Syria denied the reports, saying the target had been a military research center northwest of Damascus.

That's prompted a pair of Democratic lawmakers in Kansas - Rep. Gail Finney and Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau - to try to protect job seekers from employers who want access to user names and passwords to snoop through social media accounts such as Facebook or Twitter. Finney also is pushing a bill that would ban colleges and universities from asking for the same information from students, or those looking to enroll, about social media. The Facebook legislation is comparable to other bills that have been surfacing amid reports of employers using social media to screen job applicants. "What you do over Facebook doesn't have anything to with the duties of the job you're applying for," said Faust-Goudeau. "If people are out seeking gainful employment we shouldn't have other barriers keeping them from work."

In all, 33% of all subprime student loans in repayment were 90 days or more past due in March 2012, up from 24% in 2007, according to a Wednesday report by TransUnion LLC.
Meanwhile, the Chicago-based credit bureau found that 33% of the almost $900 billion in outstanding student loans was held by subprime, or the riskiest, borrowers as of March 2012, up from 31% in 2007.

Italy's stock-market regulator said it was reviewing the sale of a huge stake
in Saipem SpA (SPM.MI) by an unidentified investor--a sale that came hours
before the Italian oil-field services provider issued a profit warning that
subsequently caused shares to plunge 34%.
The stock-market plunge on Wednesday burned 4.5 billion euros ($6.11 billion)
off of Saipem's market capitalization. Saipem late Tuesday issued a profit
warning, hours after Bank of America Merrill Lynch had placed 10 million shares
in the market on behalf of an unidentified entity.
Traders around Europe said they expected the buyers, who paid more than EUR30
a share Tuesday for what is now worth EUR20, to complain loudly and maybe try
to annul the transactions.
Consob, Italy's securities regulator, said on Wednesday that it would conduct
a review of the placement--checks that people familiar with the regulators'
procedures said could take months to complete.

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread
Not surprising, but Japan's Ministry of Finance reported a short while ago that there was no FX intervention in the December 27 to January 29 period. that means the JPY decline in the last has been the product purely of verbal activity. Impressive.

S&P Suggests China at risk of investment bust
The Aussie dipped below the 1.0400 level once again in Asian session trade today, after a report by the S&P suggested that China's investment boom will have to cool considerably in the foreseeable future. According to S&P economists, who've come up with a model to determine the vulnerability of economies to an investment led collapse, China ranks number one on the list.
The S&P methodology compares investment spending as a percentage of GDP to real GDP and adjusts the two measures in a way that makes it possible to rank fast- vs. slow-moving economies in terms of risk. China, with 40% of its GDP tied up in investment ranks the highest in terms of risk.
Although the S&P report indicates that such imbalances may lead to a an economic collapse, at the very least it suggests that China will have to rebalance its growth towards consumption in order to avoid a possible bust. The Aussie which has been the primary beneficiary of China's infrastructure boom as the supplier of key commodities immediately sold off on the news dropping to a low of 1.0380 in late Asian trade.
Fears over the slowdown of the great "China demand" trade have dogged Aussie since the start of the year and the pair has been relatively weak as a result of those concerns. For now it appears to have stabilized near the 1.0400 level and may consolidate around the figure for the rest of the day. However, if the pair breaks the 1.0380 lows in North American session it may tumble all the way to 1.0350 as the day proceeds.

At last, the dollar debate has arrived
Typical comment of the uninformed.
Rather than focus on the AUD/USD exchange one ought to focus on the TWI.
Average for January over the last six years:
2007 64.7
2008 69.2
2009 55.2
2010 71.7
2011 76.7
2012 78.1
Now 78.1
1. Over the last two years the AUD has hardly moved.
2. The low level in 2009 was the height of the run on the currency following the decline which started in August then turned around in March leading to the high in 2011.
So where's the 60% now on the TWI at its lowest level the appreciation is 42%. In any event the high AUD has been around for six years or more.

Who's afraid of China's big bad rebalancing?
Reply
Some economists – more so among foreigners than locals – are concerned about the great imbalance between savings and investment in China as a result of deliberate government policies to repress consumption. The result via the savings and investment identity in GDP accounting is accumulating external surpluses. That is to say, output which is neither consumed nor used in investment ends up as exports.

While it will be overshadowed by Julia Gillard’s nomination of the date for the next federal election, her comments on the Australian dollar occupied a meaningful slab of her address to the National Press Club today, indicating that the continuing strength of the currency is a front-of-mind issue in Canberra.
The prime minister, noting that the dollar had appreciated by about 60 per cent in the past three years, said the dollar lay at the intersection of her concerns about economic diversity and competitiveness.

Stock markets have been surging, but for how much longer can they defy gravity, given evident constraints on growth and the run of disappointing economic indicators and earnings updates?
The first is that the current bullishness is driven primarily by the absence of negatives rather than any genuine belief in sunlit uplands just around the corner. This may be a little bit of an exaggeration because, as regular readers will know, I’ve often cited stronger equity prices as in themselves a very positive sign for the wider economy.
