Claims Per Ounce of Deliverable Gold Rises to Record High 61
Reply
The point of this 'claims per ounce' measure is not 'how high is too high.'

The real significance is how out of bounds is the market, so that when the market turns, how high must prices go to clear supply against demand, to revert to the mean.

There is 'plenty' of gold at the Comex and in the world. Unfortunately not much of it is for sale at these prices. And what is sold tends to be rehypothecated. The only question seems to be 'how many times?'

Too bad I didn't stay long usd/jpy.
Jumped out with a profit at a little retrace.
But I'm losing out on bigger numbers.

Might go long again after next dip.

Andrew Huszar: Confessions of a Quantitative Easer
Reply
I can only say: I'm sorry, America. As a former Federal Reserve official, I was responsible for executing the centerpiece program of the Fed's first plunge into the bond-buying experiment known as quantitative easing. The central bank continues to spin QE as a tool for helping Main Street. But I've come to recognize the program for what it really is: the greatest backdoor Wall Street bailout of all time.

My part of the story began a few months later. Having been at the Fed for seven years, until early 2008, I was working on Wall Street in spring 2009 when I got an unexpected phone call. Would I come back to work on the Fed's trading floor? The job: managing what was at the heart of QE's bond-buying spree—a wild attempt to buy $1.25 trillion in mortgage bonds in 12 months. Incredibly, the Fed was calling to ask if I wanted to quarterback the largest economic stimulus in U.S. history.

The Fed said it wanted to help

Risk appetite remained capped by fears the Fed could taper QE in December. Fed dove (but non-voter) reiterated his previous comments tapering could well be discussed at the December FOMC meeting, although he added employment and inflation are far from the Fed's goals. US data had little impact, Oct small business sentiment and Sep national activity disappointing. The S&P500 is currently down 0.4%.

The Significance of the Cut
Reply
"The greatest significance of the cut was symbolic as it sent a clear message to the markets that the Eurozone economy is in trouble."

No it doesn't. All it did was signal that the ECB does not want the EUR/USD rising further. The ECB has managed to start the past three years at an exchange rate of 1.31 (or thereabouts). That's not an accident. The rate cut IMVHO helped to keep the EUR/USD from sustaining a break above 1.3800, at least temporarily. With the BoJ managing to keep the JPY from gaining, the ECB does not want to become the international reserve currency by default. There are too many long term costs involved for the economy.

To imply that the ECB rate cut 'signals the Eurozone economy is in trouble' suggests as a corollary that ongoing, unending, untapered QE in the United States signals that the U.S. economy is in a catastrophe. The reality might simply be that without FED support there is no real market for U.S. Treasuries, which is in fact an infinitely worse conjecture to make.

  • Trade got off to a sluggish start Monday with holidays in several centers due to the Veterans Day (formerly Armistice Day) observances. Markets are also still digesting the October U.S. employment report (including revisions), which  was much stronger than expected. Traders now are trying to figure out how the Fed MIGHT react to mixed economic data at the December FOMC.

  • The European Central Bank (ECB) also blindsided the markets last  Thursday with an unexpected 25bp cut in its refi rate to 0.25%.  The Eurozone has seen rising unemployment and falling (0,70% y/y) flash October HICP inflation. The debate on Europe now is whether ECB policy should target the German economy or the Eurozone as a whole. developing deflation in the Eurozone that forced the hand of the ECB to make its token cut in the Refi rate. The greatest significance of the cut  was symbolic as it sent a clear message to the markets that the Eurozone economy is in trouble.

  • Today has started a period of key U.K. data  releases. Otherwise, a the usual weekly U.S. data are due this week. Key Eurozone inflation data are also slated. Keep in mind, recent very weak inflation data may have been behind the unexpected ECB rate cut last week.

Euro rebounds on active cross-buying

The single currency strengthened against other currencies on Monday due to active short-covering together with cross buying in euro. However, trading was relatively thin due to public holidays in U.S. and France.

Euro found support at 1.3345 in Australia morning and ratcheted higher in European session on active-cross buying euro versus other currencies (eur/jpy rose from 132.21 to 133.16, euro/gbp gained from 0.8339 to 0.8396). The pair climbed to an intra-day high at 1.3416 after European closed.

Versus Japanese yen, the greenback met selling interest at 99.24 in New Zealand and then retreated to 98.93 in European morning as Nikkei index futures pared early Asian gains. However, renewed buying interest there lifted price higher and climbed to a session high at 99.30 in New York morning on active cross-selling yen versus euro before moving sideways after European market closed.

The British pound traded narrowly in Asian trading and met selling interest at 1.6022 in European morning due to active cross-selling sterling versus euro. Cable fell to a session low at 1.5964 after European markets closed before recovering.

In other news, EU's Olli Rehn urged Germany to remove bottlenecks to domestic demand and said ‘increase in German domestic demand has been "modest".' EU spokesman Simon O'Connor said 'Portugal program on track; Portugal program set to conclude in spring of next year; doesn't have "specific" Portugal interest rate in mind.'

I'll follow their accuracy but not trade their posts without far
more analysis.
