USDJPY reached today possible barrier on monthly charts at ~92,94 for this month. It could(but may not) take some rest; sensible support may be in 85 area.

A Modest Proposal for More Fed Buying. A Lot More

What is the cost to the US economy by retaining imperial measurements. Converting to metric could be construed as an investment for the future. There are only three countries that haven't converted Burma, Liberia and USA. What great company.

I was educated using imperial measurements and grew up using pounds shillings and pence. I arrived in Australia a few weeks after the introduction of decimal currency and guess what experienced no problems adapting at all. Australia converted to metric weights and measures about 40 years ago. It was mostly accomplished over a period of five years.

What better time to convert. Converting road signs etc can use the unemployed and channel government expense into industrial production.

Is this guy nuts? How can he be trusted to run a bank? The Fed would have to print USD on a massive scale to purchase all those bonds. There ain't no such thing as a free lunch!

Earning an extra 3 percent on another $30 trillion in bonds would allow the Fed to return an additional $900 billion to the Treasurythus wiping out most of our federal deficit while avoiding actually having to do anything about current government spending.

Also, as the price of gas rises, people drive less...they eliminate joy driving. As a consequence, local taxes collected...states tax gasoline to fund road/highway projects...fall. So Governors have to ask legislatures to Increase the gas tax in order to fund highway/bridge repair.....happening right now in Maryland and Va.

dc CB 19:09 GMT February 1, 2013

Food and Fuel are not in the Core.

Supermarket chains and Gas companies, like Shell and Exxon have teamed up to offer "Cents per gal off" rewards for spending on grocery items. Spend $100 and get 10 cents off per gal at participating stations. $200 spent gets 20 cents off...$300...30....that's the limit.

I also beg to differ, it is a tax, but non consider it as such. All these oil companies received subsidies, and as prices rise the call will be for more subsides and less regulation so the companies can "work to make the US independent". The tax, in the case of higher pump prices, just goes directly to the company...they don't lose the "skim off the top" that the government tax collector takes for the pass thru service. Drill baby, Drill.

CB 0 is not raising taxes. Speculants are. Oil and gasoline are rising on all the good economic recovery news: energy producers get paid first seeing as they are at the bottom of the economic feeding chain.

Never mind that higher fuel prices fuel price inflation (if not expectations yet) and go counter to Ben's efforts.

January's Currency Story: JPY -- a DISCUSSION thread

Until Friday, 1959 was also the last time the Nikkei 225 stock index rallied for 12 straight weeks, driven by the quickening pace of Japans postwar economic boom. Now the index has repeated that feat. The Japanese business media have been quick to jump on the historical tidbit, trumpeting the Nikkeis best weekly run in 54 years. The rally in 1959 actually lasted 17 weeks.

The expectations pinned on Prime Minister Abes drive to tackle deflation and the strong yen are the driving force pushing stocks toward this postwar record, the Nikkei newspaper said.

While the the cartel raid was successful based on the paper futures price, it was an epic fail based on physical gold delivery requests, as a monumental 1.391 million ounces, or 43.26 tonnes of gold stood for delivery today on first notice day

The Q. is if correction in those Mkts. will come,, will the BOJ come to the rescue of the Shorts on the jpy and be able to keep the yen low.

I kind of agree Laowen's view on eur/jpy.....

short at daily chart channel top.
If the pair doesn't make a key-reversal or inverted hammer, then, run and exit with your profit at hands at day close.

buying against channel bottom looks limbo to me now.

Another European Bank nationalised
Reply
(Reuters) - The Netherlands nationalized bank and insurance group SNS Reaal (SR.AS) at a cost of 3.7 billion euros ($5 billion) on Friday to shore up confidence in the financial sector after a private investor-led rescue collapsed.

Another state rescue of a financial group will lead to a worsening in the Dutch budget deficit this year - which is already forecast to exceed European Union targets - and is likely to prompt a public outcry given the billions of euros of budget cuts and austerity measures in recent years.

It is also a sign of how many European banks, five years on from the height of the global financial crisis, are struggling to turn a corner amid weak economies and tougher regulations. French bank Credit Agricole (CAGR.PA) announced over $5 billion of charges on Friday, a day after Deutsche Bank (DBKGn.DE) also unveiled big writedowns.

CURRENCY WARS: EURO continues its strong advance vs. the JPY and USD. EU officials cannot be pleased
Reply

  • HIGH IMPACT ITEMS: US- Employment, University of Michigan
  • CURRENCY WARS: The EUR has continued  to work higher vs. the USD and JPY following a number of stronger than expected PMI readings from Europe. U.K. PMI data were a touch weaker than expected, but still (barely) at an expansion level. The EZ flash HICP (CPI) estimate of 2.0% yy for January brought the ECB back in line with its target for the first time since December 2010 .
  • Markets are waiting eagerly for the January U.S. employment figures. due on the N.Y. open. The ADP private employment data released on Wednesday suggest a decent NFP report.  Street estimates are for a gain of 155,000 in the month, although "whisper numbers" are for a slightly higher reading. Job growth levels continue to point to a tepid recovery.
  • Chinese PMI data (NBS and HSBC) were mixed today but still suggested that the economy is in expansion.
  • Australian PMI data released early in the day were especially weak. The Reserve Bank pf Australia (RBA) meets for the firs time in two months next Tuesday.
  • The key EURUSD 20-day moving average is 1.3323. the 10-yr bund is 1.71%, +3 bp.  European bourses are up. U.S. shares are higher. The U.S. 10-yr  is 2.00%,  +2bp.
  • Key Far East bourses were mixed to higher. The 10-yr JGB is 0.77%, +2bp.  The USDJPY 20-day average is 89.37. EURJPY 20-day average is 119.10.

Yuan Vs Yen: Reply
As YUan swap lines of exchange increase between chinas major trading partners hence by passing the international use of Usd , this at the same time prevents any pressure on the Chinese govmt to step up revaluation of yuan against the usd and yen. While yuan swap lines increase the yuan stays weak and Japan is countering this trading disadvantage by the only way it knows: weakening yen via intervention and increasing its own swap lines...result:A weak usd/ jpy heading to 105 and a weakerEuropean/Yen following to 128.

Julia Gillard now leads 'most unpopular Australian government in past 40 years'

One year after Australian prime minister Julia Gillard ousted Kevin Rudd to become the country's first female leader, she's in serious trouble herself.

The enthusiasm that greeted Gillard on a crisp June day last year has all but evaporated, with barely one in four (27%) Australians now prepared to vote for her, according to a new poll the worst for any major federal political party in almost four decades.

Reply
as we said back on January 9, now that the Fed is back to full scale unsterilized market injections in the form of good old POMO, anyone who wishes to challenge the Fed directly may want to reconsider doing so via stocks (buying precious metals on FRBNY, BOE and BIS-facilitated 8:00 am crashes is always encouraged).

Recall what we said on January 9: "it may not be a good idea to be short stocks on any of the [POMO] days listed below." Below is a chart of what happened next: it shows the stock market's performance and whether or not there was POMO on that day.

do they need such a strong eur now? Oopps renewed US-Japan relationship with the appointment of Abe is surely screwing them up. And they still expect to pressure China into stronger yuan? Come on, tell Japan to stop manipulating their currency first.

JPY pairs declined after opening yesterday then rose steadily from European open to close the day +660 pips with help from a last minute buying surge as NY closed.

GBPJPY led gains +158 pips, CADJPY +102 and EURJPY +98. Remaining pairs all closed up but lower with USDJPY showing the least gain on the day +65 pips.

The pairs have since risen 90+ pips touching the high set in October of 2009 then falling back some.

Declining volumes coupled with first of the month flows are worth watching closely. Currently holding cautious long bias ahead of tomorrow's data.
