While Europe struggle with national youth unemployment levels exceeding 50%
same game different product.
The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously ruled in favor of Monsanto in a case about the use of its patented seeds. Indiana farmer Vernon Hugh Bowman had been ordered by a lower court to pay more than $84,000 after planting a mix of seeds he bought from a grain elevator. Some of the plants contained Monsantos herbicide-resistant genetic trait known as Roundup Ready, which is found in roughly 90 percent of U.S. soybeans. Monsanto accused Bowman of using their technology without paying for it, and the Supreme Court agreed, finding farmers must pay Monsanto every time they plant its seeds. While the case could have wide implications beyond agriculture, Justice Elena Kagan wrote that Mondays ruling was "limited addressing the situation before us, rather than every one involving a self-replicating product."

EU to ban olive oil jugs from restaurants
From next year olive oil "presented at a restaurant table" must be in pre-packaged, factory bottles with a tamper-proof dispensing nozzle and labelling in line with EU industrial standards.
The use of classic, refillable glass jugs or glazed terracotta dipping bowls and the choice of a restaurateur to buy olive oil from a small artisan producer or family business will be outlawed.
"It will seem bonkers that olive oil jugs must go while vinegar bottles or refillable wine jugs can stay."

Treasury tells Congress it has more time under debt ceiling
(Reuters) - The Obama administration on Friday notified Congress it was prepared to take extraordinary steps to allow it to keep paying the nation's bills once a temporary suspension in the government's debt ceiling lapses this weekend.
To preserve its borrowing capacity, the Treasury Department said it would use the same measures that have been used in previous debt limit impasses to continue paying the nation's bills on time to free up $260 billion in headroom.

aussie: not particularly bullish here but futures positioning is likely to be around neutral or even slightly short, which often precedes a technical rebound in the least. however im not to happy to bet against the usd given the feds current state of mind even if tangible data isnt too hot. however things look more interesting against the nzd, which still had a large net long positioning and though it may have come down this week, it is still going to be sizeable. given the governments stance towards the currency, i think it could make sense to look for a rebound here (audnzd). i have taken a lonf position a little above 1.20 with a stop below the 200 month sma, currently around 1.1929. if all goes well, im looking for a move thru the 21 day sma and to the top of the daily bollinger currently at 1.22. there is scope for the 200 day sma at 1.25 which has capped the market on the way down since the highs.

- The San Francisco Fed President
Williams (dove) said in the NY afternoon Thursday that the central bank
might be able to START to trim its bond purchases by the summer. Given
the source, his comments were seen as significant.
- The next FOMC meeting will be
on June18-19. Bernanke will testify before Congress next
Wednesday (May 22). The latest Fed Minutes will be released on
that date as well. Before the Fed meets again, the markets will get a
look at the May employment data.

the Fed should not be having any inflation concerns driving future

- Today caps off a busy week

EU New Car Sales Rise First Time In 19 Months: ACEA
5/17/2013 2:31 AM ET
New car registrations in the European Union (EU) increased from last year in April, for the fist time in more than one-and half years, data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) showed Friday.
Sales of new passenger cars advanced 1.7 percent on an annual basis to around 1.04 million units in April, reversing the 10.2 percent fall recorded in March. The increase was the first since September 2011.
April's upturn was probably driven by the two additional working-days compared to the same month last year, the agency said.
The performance of the car market was divergent among the major member countries. Sales in the United Kingdom climbed 14.8 percent from a year earlier, and the German car market recorded a 3.8 percent gain. Spanish customers purchased 10.8 percent more passenger cars than they did in April 2012.
Meanwhile, car sales in France and Italy decreased 5.3 percent and 10.8 percent respectively from a year earlier.
During the four months ended April, total car sales in the EU decreased 7.1 percent to about 4.03 million units than in the same period a year earlier, data showed.
