Watch Cashin: This could spark 'outright selling'
Reply
CNBC's Bob Pisani and Art Cashin, of UBS, discuss the Fed minutes and whether there was any indication about what it will do with the taper. The Fed seems to imply the taper will happen quicker than many anticipate.

ADP Private Payrolls

ib - a couple of points re jobs and deficit-

1. in the past two years tax payments from individuals have increased as employment increased by over 400 bio (income tax 250 bio fica 155 bio) which increase just about covers the total gross interest on US debt (418 bio) and is nearly twice the net interest – so on the receipt side it does have an effect // it also has a debt reduction effect a bit harder to measure on the outlay side but most directly on the cost of unemployment compensation, a savings of 35 bio – the cost of other programs (medicaid, food stamps, training programs et al ) is modestly reduced

2. the effect of higher yields on refunding and new issuance is not a huge consideration - as I mentioned yesterday the very short term paper is not very rate sensitive – the taper has no effect here – refunding of greater than 5 yr will likely be less than the current coupon – so we have rate on new issue (about 970 bio spread across the curve) at 3% BLENDED RATE (maybe lower) so about 30 bio, easily absorbed by increased income tax receipts from improving NFP (see point 1 above)

3. the perennial bogeyman of repatriation by large trading partners is a constant fear but a yeti riding a unicorn down Wall Street is more likely this year (and the FED is still in buying mode for about 1/3 of the new issuance) – with respect to the current trend of EU peripheral bond markets I would suggest that much of that buying is coming from risk takers fleeing EM countries and for the possible future of said funds I suggest MTL JP's cautionary “CYPRUSSED” posts

4. Maybe it'll be different this time

Nikkei Futures -185 .. US down from the highs yesterday

looks like eur/yen trend is down to 141.40 while capped at 142.65/72

Europe 12.2% U/E - no German Backstop agreement ... bit hard to allocate to eur at this point in time.

Sales data slightly better but doesn't really matter as their exports are outshining their imports - so Good For Germany but not so great for anyone else.

Aud no position - but with very important Chinese Data upcoming - we probably trigger stops below 8870 and above 8970 at various points in time.

  • The December ADP private jobs improved to +238K however, you never know about the reliability of the ADP numbers. Nevertheless  they clearly are pointing to a better NFP reading on Friday. Major forecasters broadly have been increasing their  estimates for this release. See the FOREX FORUM  for latest key data and charts as they are released.

  • The minutes from the December Fed policy meeting contained no major surprises. Most members supported a QE reduction, as most were more confident on jobs outlook. There was also  a discussion about lowering its unemployment target.

  • With Janet Yellen approved, to be the next head of the central bank as of February 1,  better NFP data on Friday would reinforce the Bernanke asset purchases tapering decision made in December. See the FOREX FORUM  for latest key data and charts as they are released.

  • This week features central bank decisions by the Bank of England and the ECB. No policy changes had been expected before sub-1.00% EZ flash CPI  data. The mandate of the ECB is to target inflation on the up and downside.

  • Monthly U,S.jobs data are set for Friday..For additional key items and more detail (dates, times, data estimates), be sure to reference our Economic Calendar. See the FOREX FORUM  for latest key data and charts as they are released.

nh please.... Given current levels of U.S. Federal government debt, increased NFP is not going to have a significant impact on revenue / deficits / debt. What counts is the yield at which the FED gets to issue (that 4 trillion USD that needs to be auctioned this year). Higher yields will have a huge impact on government funding costs. What is crucial is foreign support for U.S. Treasuries, or lack thereof. If foreign holders choose to repatriate (China, Japan) then yields will rise, forcing the deficit and debt higher. Should foreigners decide to increase holdings of U.S. debt then that will take the pressure off. I don't see that happening though given the credibility of the current U.S. Administration. If there's a trend anywhere it's out of U.S. Treasuries and into European peripheral bond markets. And it's been going on for quite some time, now accelerating.

GVI Forex Jay Meisler 15:20 GMT January 8, 2014
ADP Private Payrolls

Agree on NFP. Margin of error is large and subject to big revisions.

It is the trend in data that is more important.

Also, if the Fed was close to raising rates then the data would be even more significant. Instead, in this near zero interest rate world, markets move on expectations of when rates might be raised.

With that said, NFP moves the market so no reason to fight it.

Livingston nh 15:18 GMT January 8, 2014
ADP Private Payrolls

ib - NFP is a critical factor in your current concern about US debt rollover/issuance -- simply put more work = more tax = less debt

Paris ib 15:15 GMT January 8, 2014
ADP Private Payrolls

Jay I think the market is in thrall to the NFP numbers. If the FED is actually making policy on the back of these numbers (given the revisions they are subject to and their lagging nature with regard to general economic activity) then the FED really is run by a bunch of academic incompetents. Which is possible, I suppose. Bit of a worry though. Personally I don't think NFP is anything but a distraction in the general scheme of things.

GVI Forex Jay Meisler 15:09 GMT January 8, 2014
ADP Private Payrolls

ib, both, Speed of taper and expectations of when the Fed will raise short-term rates.

Livingston nh 15:06 GMT January 8, 2014
ADP Private Payrolls

Well so much for the Yellen rally - plug factor for Friday's NFP might be positive (usually better than Nov) plus government hiring may be up as entities feel more flush - the FOMC will probably scramble to change its unemployment threshold/target below 6.5% to convince marketeers that "lower for longer" is real (problem is unemployment calculation in Q1 will be influenced by benefits extension) // Fixed income folks think they have the Fed taper priced in but they may get outflanked on the short end by the economy

Paris ib 15:06 GMT January 8, 2014
ADP Private Payrolls

Why do you think NFP data is important John? Because it determines the extent of QE? Or the likely speed with which the FED will eventually raise interest rates?

Interestingly 1 year paper is actually up 21 basis points on yesterday's close!! Though I can't see the FED issuing at the very short end, since they'll be back at square one with maturities in a year. It looks like the market is getting out it's collective calculator and trying to figure out how much paper needs to be auctioned this year. My ball park figure is 4 trillion USD, which works out at 330 billion or so per month if auctions are steady over the entire 12 months. I'd like to hear other estimates if they are out there.

3 year Treasury yields are up 9 basis points to 0.837% today. All those bidders who got set at 0.799% yesterday are now under water. And the 3 to 7 year area remains under pressure. Dollar strengthens after upbeat U.S. trade data

Dollar rose against its major peers on Tuesday after a report showed that the U.S. trade deficit shrank to the lowest level in four years in November, however, gain was limited as investors were eyeing Wednesday's minutes of the Federal Reserve's December meeting and Friday's U.S. jobs report for December for further indications on the possible timing of reductions in Fed stimulus.

Versus the Japanese yen, dollar retreated after a brief rise to 104.62 in Asia in part due to cross-buying in yen, however, gains in the Nikkei futures gave support to the pair and dollar rose from European morning low at 104.25 to 104.74 in early New York trading after upbeat U.S. trade data.

U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis said that the U.S. trade deficit narrowed to a four-year low of USD 34.25 billion in November from a deficit of USD 39.33 billion in October, whose figure was revised from a previously reported deficit of USD 40.6 billion.

Although euro rebounded after finding support at 1.3611 in early European trading and then rose to 1.3657 ahead of New York open, broad-based rebound in greenback after release of strong U.S. trade balance data pressured price lower to session low at 1.3596 in New York morning, however, euro pared intra-day loss in New York afternoon to 1.3640 before easing near the close.

Earlier, report showed that the annual rate of inflation in the euro zone slowed to 0.8% in December from 0.9% the previous month, fuelling fresh concerns over the threat of deflation in the currency bloc.

Similarly, although cable remained under pressure in Asia and then dropped to 1.6376 in European morning, price rose in tandem with euro ahead of New York open and penetrated Monday's New York high of 1.6434 to 1.6439 but only to tank to 1.6374 later in the day due to dollar's broad-based rebound.

In the other news, Fed's Rosengen says 'stimulus should be removed only gradually as economy continues to improve; Fed missing inflation, employment mandates by "fairly large margins"; inflation persistently below 2% a concern, leaves economy vulnerable; economic conditions improving; expects 3% growth in 2014.'

San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams told reporters after a speech that "the Federal Reserve will make gradual cuts to its massive bond- buying program in coming months as long as the economy continues to improve, and only a significant deviation from those expectations would force it to change tack."

Data to be release on Wednesday:

U.K. BRC retails sales, Halifax house price Germany trade balance, export, import, current account, factory orders, Italy unemployment rate, EU retail sales, unemployment rate, n U.S. ADP unemployment change.
