It just underscores that despite the "United we stand" rhetoric at G20 etc the pain being inflicted from imbalances encouraged by US, Chinese and Japanese gusherthon policies aimed at keeping financial economy speculation predominant over real economy evolution.

Raising rates to support a currency thereby linking monetary policy to market sentiment of FX is orthodox but risky as it commits to a game of speculative "chicken" with those larger than the CB.

China's chief forex reserves manager to leave his post - sources

HONG KONG Tue Jan 28, 2014 9:29am IST

Jan 28 (Reuters) - The fund manager in charge of investing the Chinese government's foreign exchange reserves, who helped diversify its foreign asset portfolio away from U.S. Treasury bonds, is leaving his position, three sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

Zhu Changhong, chief investment officer at the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE), was widely viewed as a highly talented portfolio manager when the agency hired him away from Pimco, the world's largest bond fund manager, in 2010.

After taking over management of managing China's forex reserves, which reached $3.82 trillion at end-2013, Zhu reduced the ratio devoted to U.S. Treasury securities, while increasing the share of U.S. corporate bonds, stocks, and real estate, as well as Japanese stocks and bonds.

"I'm not clear yet why he resigned or whether the team he brought with him to SAFE will leave as well," said a source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity because the resignation is not yet public.

Zhu, 44, was known for his low-key style, which earned him the nickname "Invisible Man." He holds a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Chicago and worked at Bank of America before joining Pimco in 1999. (Reporting by Bi Xiaowen; Writing by Gabriel Wildau; Editing by Kim Coghill)

The outgrowth of this for us is that falling stocks are seen as a risk-off trade and that impacts the markets overall. I also am not cerain sometimes of which follows which

#USDJPY continues to be a difficult trade. As we mentioned yesterday, the COT data suggest that the market is dangerously unbalanced (very short the JPY). I got a more current confirmation of this from another source yesterday. I think it is because of the market's positioning that the JPY tends to have some nasty corrections on any positive news out of Japan.

On the other hand, the market has been holding onto its JPY shorts because it tends to be skeptical of official positive comments from Tokyo after two decades of stagnation. Today the 50-day average comes in at 103.46 and the 20-day is 104.15. Spot was last 103.15, so this is a mixed picture as well.

#TradeIdeas As sf mentioned yesterday, it feels like the key #EURUSD pair seems to change directions almost daily. We all focus on the pair because it is by a long way the dominant relationship in the forex markets.

As for its price momentum, today we are looking at the 20 day avg (1.3618) and the 50-day (1.3642). Spot is pivoting the 50-day average. The problem is that the 20-day is BELOW the 50-day but the 50 day is ABOVE the 100 and 200-day averages.

Bottom-line, there are no clear momentum patterns to cite in EURUSD. We always watch spot 1.3650 vs the 20-day average 1.3618, but will be continuing to look for more decisive direction.

Any thoughts?

Official figures are expected to show the UK's economic growth in 2013 was the strongest since 2007, the year before the financial crisis.

Euro retreats ahead of Fed meeting

The single currency traded with a soft bias against the dollar on Monday as expectations for a further reduction to the Federal Reserve's stimulus program after this Wednesday's FOMC meeting continued to support demand for the dollar.

During the day, although euro rebounded from 1.3669 in early Asia and then rose to 1.3716 in European morning due after data showed that German business confidence rose to the highest level in 2-1/2 years in January, renewed dollar's intra-day firmness pressured from there and the single currency later dropped to 1.3653 in New York morning before trading sideways.

The German research institute Ifo said on Monday that its business climate index rose to 110.6 in January, above expectation for a reading of 110.0 and up from 109.5 in December, indicating that businesses in the euro zone's largest economy had a strong start to the year.

Versus the Japanese yen, despite dollar's initial selloff below Friday's low at 102.00 to 101.77 on continued risk on continued risk aversion in thin trading conditions in early trading hours on Monday, lack of follow-through selling triggered broad-based short-covering and price rebounded to 102.41 at Asian open. Later, dollar climbed higher to 102.77 in European morning and then 102.93 but renewed cross-buying of yen due to risk aversion pressured price to 102.20 in New York morning.

Cable remained under pressure ahead of Asian open on Monday and dropped to 1.6471 but expectations that the Bank of England will raise interest rates sooner than anticipated after last week's U.K. unemployment data boosted demand for the British pound and sterling rose to 1.6571 in European morning and then 1.6588 in early New York trading before easing.

Some news over the weekend worth mentioning. Reuters reported IMF MD Christine Lagarde told the economic forum in Davos that Eurozone inflation is "way below target" and that deflation is a potential risk for the region. In response to this, ECB President Mario Draghi said ECB is ready to act if inflation went lower than forecast and reiterated that interest rates would remain low or go lower for an extended period of time.

Data to be release on Tuesday:

Australia NAB business confidence, France consumer confidence, Italy consumer confidence, U.K. GDP, U.S. durable goods, S&P home price and consumer confidence.

heard an interesting comment about the Nikkei today.

the thought process was - its pointless to keep trying to push the nikkei down - as companies and individuals can borrow any amount of money they need at extremely low rates - and credit rating is not an issue on the corporate side.

also next week corporate earnings are starting next week which will be good.

obviously there are larger worldwide issues at play - but I expect Japanese selling of Nikkei to start slowing down... as when one company does it - then the others start to do it as well..... I feel pretty comfortable buying $yen dips today .. with an eye on turkey for some interest rate move later.
