BRUSSELS — President Obama offered a sustained and forceful rejoinder against Russia on Wednesday, denouncing the “brute force” he said it has used to intimidate neighbors like Ukraine and vowing that the United States “will never waver” in standing up for its NATO allies against aggression by Moscow.

In a speech meant as a capstone to his trip to Europe in the midst of an East-West confrontation with Russia, Mr. Obama addressed Moscow’s justifications for its intervention in Ukraine point by point, dismissing them as “absurd” or unmerited. He even defended the Iraq war, which he had opposed as a senator, as a stark contrast to the way Russia has seized the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

The five institutions that didn't get approval—Citigroup, Zions Bancorp, and the U.S. units of HSBC Holdings PLC, Royal Bank of Scotland Group PLC and Banco Santander —must submit revised capital plans and must suspend any increased dividend payments unless they get the Fed's approval in writing. The foreign banks that didn't pass muster with the Fed are restricted from paying increased dividends to their parent firm. The five banks that failed to get their plans approved can continue to pay dividends at last year's level.

That's because all the LNG facilities were built to IMPORT LNG. ie: re-gasify the liquid. They were built before the "fracking phenom" when US NG was nearer to $10. They all are being reverse engineered so to liquify natgas for shipment. The first are expected to be ready sometime in 2016.

Those who have been keeping track of the amazing bear flattening in rates in the past week will probably not be surprised by the result. Everyone else will surely like to know that it just cost the US the most to sell 2 year paper since May of 2011, which at a high yield of 0.469% was the highest yield since May of 2012, or before the great rotation out of stocks and into bond began.

And thanks to the "dots" expect to see the yield on short-dated paper to continue rising, even as the long-end drops further in an epic flattening which is sure to crush bank Net Interest Margins. It also explains why nobody talks about it on CNBC any more: after all what is there to say?

I got it wrong...

I think trading is getting more influenced by end of quarter flows than anything else.

Short euro , audusd and long gold positions are dead return wise... And people are exiting.

Also look at nikkei .. People have given up on that trade for now.. Despite solid us performance the nikkei is worthless to trade at the moment.

So any trades that go bad now .. Where probably right under normal circumstances... Hit/run and hope for a crisis I suppose till next month.

look... the FED gang is in only its 3rd "taper" of its flooding the market with trillion-dollar/yr. There is a reason the FED gang's trumpets keep repeating that tapering is not tightening and that they will remain "easy": likely trying to forestall stox from puking.

IF stox were to puke it would not be unreasonable for bonds to pop up in reaction. I would consider that a mother of selling opp. You ?

Yesterday's 2 year Auction

Thanks Nic. Something slightly weird is going on with Treasuries at the moment but I can't figure out what it is. ;-)

Yesterday's 2 year Auction

Hi Ib,
the 32 B$ auction was labelled as an average one by Briefing.com: "The auction drew 0.469% (0.471% when issued) and a 3.20x bid/cover. A strong indirect bid (40.9%) provided support as directs (21.5%) saw an average takedown. Primary dealers ended with 37.6% of the supply. The complex saw little reaction to the in-line auction with maturities trading in a tight range near their respective flat lines for the remainder of the session."

Does anyone have any details of what happened with the 2 year auction yesterday. I didn't note much news but the 2 year paper is off considerably this morning, yields gapping higher - which suggests the paper didn't find a very safe home right off the bat. Another auction today, then tomorrow.... getting interesting.

"Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens says governments must act to a create more conducive environment for economic growth.

"Sustainable growth over the long run has to rely on more than just monetary policy," he told a Credit Suisse Asian Investment Conference in Hong Kong.

"Strong long-run growth won't be achieved in any country simply by manipulating interest rates, or, for that matter, exchange rates.

"Other conditions need to be right for growth."

Those include creating sound environments for competition, innovation and investment, Mr Stevens said.

"In those areas various other government policies must come to the fore," he said.

Mr Stevens said a recent commitment by the G20 to lift global economic activity by two per cent over the next five years should not be achieved through programs of cheap money or debt-financed spending.

"Many of the needed measures are likely to be politically demanding for governments to introduce," he said.

The RBA governor also said there were "promising signs" from non-mining sectors of the Australian economy, where growth is needed to offset declining mining investment." aap
