The Greek Experience

nh - there currently appears no Ukrainian leader with enough balls to tell the IMF to screw off and to crawl back to Washington, declare default on previous IMF loans and to h3ll with some Italian or Austrian bank loan holdings. One more thing that is unlikely to happen - because Nuland's boy bobblehead Yats is fascinated with IMF's loans - is for someone in Ukraine to scream for massive, urgent and immediate Russian military help to fend off the IMF and its loan conditions before NATO comes in, seizes Ukraine and starts insuring "the privatization of (Ukrainian) government assets and property" - one of IMF loan conditions.

Renzi... imposed on Italians by the very creepy Napolitano. He's not there as a result of a vote and Italians are not particularly thrilled by this guy. No experience, no programme. But he's there for a reason. Italy was upgraded by SnP once he became Premier (that's a clear signal - the guy's done nothing but someone likes him). All in all the press conference was a joke. Obama looks clapped out and Renzi is a pirla. What great leaders we have. Not.

Obama talked about how the U.S. can't keep spending on the military like it has been..... wants other countries in Nato to take the slack. So there you have it folks: U.S. military spending to be cut back because the money is not available. Hopefully the rest of NATO won't take up the slack and we will suddenly have more money for things other than WAR.

How to make yourself look like a complete donkey. AND he was talking about the pros and cons of austerity. Before he goes on tour someone should explain (in simple terms) how things actually work with things like government deficits and stuff and how no-one in the OECD actually has a surplus. And in Europe I don't think there has been a surplus anywhere significant for quite some time, decades even.

Paris ib 17:48 GMT March 27, 2014

I guess he means countries exporting capital (running current account surpluses) because there ain't no-one in the developed world with a government sector surplus at present. Certainly there are no European governments running surpluses. So what's he suggesting exactly? More cross border lending? More international capital flows.

I wonder who briefed him.

Late in European trade, prices in prime fixed income markets are higher in response to what has developed into "risk-off" session with equities broadly easing in midday N.Y. trading.

European equity prices are closing weak, as U.S. shares have fallen. Peripheral European bond prices are mostly higher on hopes of EB ease next week.

Ive Been watching the S&P vs. USDJPY chart closely all day. I was expecting a tug-o-war but The S&P traded higher vs. the USDJPY at about 14:00 GMT and the two diverged in the other direction (very unusual). Now the S&P finally has fallen (about 15:30GMT) and the two have finally come back into line. I give the times for these movements just to point out that the two can often diverge for hours at a time.

One problem some may have is that you can trade the S&P minis in the futures and USDJPY with an internet broker, or futures if so desired. The issue is if you can only trade USDJPY with a retail broker, you could get the "convergence" correct, but that might only be reflected in an adjustment to the S&P.

The third and final reading of US fourth quarter GDP was +2.6%, a touch higher than the +2.4% second reading out in February but still below the +3.2% advance estimate released in January. The Pending Home Sales Index, a leading indicator of housing activity, measures housing contract activity, and is based on signed real estate contracts for existing single-family homes, condos and co-ops. Because a home goes under contract a month or two before it is sold, the Pending Home Sales Index generally leads Existing Home Sales by a month or two.

It doesn't surprise me that S&P futures and USDJPY are diverging at this hour. It looks like the S&P tried to rally from 8:30 to 10:00 GMT (1849 peak) but it has subsequently broken lower to 1846 last. The USDJPY has not followed.

This sets up a tog-o-war between the two into the cash market opening of stocks. so risk-on or risk-off?

Also don't forget the new focus is on whether the ECB will ease next week. This would be EUR negative mainly because of the signal it sends. I would not be surprised if this is just another case of the ECB sending false messages to the markets.

Lots of questions and not a lot of answers. Thoughts?

EURUSD setup to downside but so far the invisible hand keeping it above 1.3750

Should 1.3748-50 get firmly broken then 1.3705 comes on radar. Needs 1.3780+ to put 1.3800 back in play.

FOREX Updates: USD May Rise as 4Q GDP Upgrade Bolsters Fed Trend
Reply
The New Zealand Dollar outperformed in otherwise quiet overnight trade. The rally appeared to be catalyzed by the outcome of a bond auction, where the government sold NZ$200 million in 3 percent coupon bonds maturing in 2020. The bid-to-cover ratio, a measure of demand, fell to 2.84 compared with 5.05 at an auction of analogous paper in February.
The RBNZ raised interest rates in the interim and signaled further tightening is ahead. With that in mind, the drop in demand may suggest investors found the 3 percent coupon unattractive relative to where the benchmark rate is expected to move in the months ahead. This belies a resoundingly hawkish monetary policy outlook, which naturally bodes well for the Kiwi.
February’s UK Retail Sales report headlines the economic calendar in European hours. Receipts excluding automotive expenditures are expected to post a 2.9 percent year-on-year increase, marking the weakest result in three months. A soft print may not yield a lasting response from the British Pound however considering an analogous report from the British Retail Consortium (BRC) telegraphed such a scenario two weeks ago.

uk sales. big fall last month, so f/c of +0.5-0.7. sets bar reasonably low looking back on past falls. a no chance in long term assumes a higher sales m/m figure near 1%.
still would expect cable to be kept honest by 20 day if 16605 taken. worth noting what happens on hourly basis. will be looking to sell any blip unless we get a really big number.

Early in European trading hours, prices in prime fixed income markets are mostly higher as speculation about ECB ease as early as next week mounts. As of this hour, today this looks to be shaping up as "risk-off" session, but that can change quickly.

The peripheral European bond prices are mostly higher. European equities are weaker and Far East equity markets closed mostly lower. U.S. equity futures are stronger.

NY, some really severe res at 102.50, pair just cant make hay above 102.55. we did this level earlier in the week, so suggests we shouldnt see much downside if pair to challenge 102.80/103.10. however, yesterdays fall is not totally catostrophic, but i do not like the 4-hourly candle reversal just now, similar to the bounce from low overnight. so its delicately poised. i have 102.05 and 101.86 as last lines for this rally. not sure we can go much lower a second time without bringing 101.20 into range.

IMF about to screw Ukrainian baba

JP - when you do a deal with the devil you always get screwed. The Ukraine is about to find that out. Welcome to the West Ukraine. Chaos and fascism is coming courtesy of the global 'establishment'. The murkiness of what went on in the Ukraine is just mind boggling. Now they have no elected representatives (at least Crimea got a vote) and a lot of dodgy foreign provocateurs. Charm, charm, charm.
