The last time banks scrambled to pad their books into the quarter end, and come begging at the front door of the NY Fed's Liberty 33 office, was on the last day of Q4 and 2013, when nearly $200 billion in Treasurys were handed out by the Fed to over 100 counterparties in what was the largest reverse repo operation conducted by Ben Bernanke, and his brand new Fixed-Rate Reverse Repo operation, in history.

That was the record until today, when just over an hour ago the Fed disclosed that as part of its most recent reverse repo operation, it had handed out to 93 dealer banks and other financial intermediaries, both foreign and domestic, some $242 billion in Treasurys in what is now the biggest reverse repo operation in history, a privilege for which the collateral-starved banks paid the Fed the king's ransom of 0.05% in annual interest, i.e., nothing.

Janet L. Yellen, the new Federal Reserve chairwoman, said Monday that Americans have plenty of reason to feel as if the economy is still in recession, and that the central bank remains determined to improve the situation.

In her first public speech, Ms. Yellen, said that even now, almost five years after the official end of the Great Recession, it remains harder for Americans to find jobs than in the midst of a typical downturn. For those who are working, wages are rising more slowly than usual.

“There remains no doubt that the economy and the job market are not back to normal health,” Ms. Yellen said. “The recovery still feels like a recession to many Americans and it also looks that way in some economic statistics.”

What we have this week?
Reply
What we have this week?
- Friday’s market action was largely in preparation for the big week we have ahead of us. Tomorrow sees a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) meeting, Japan’s tankan report, and the global manufacturing PMIs. Thursday we have the European Central Bank (ECB) meeting and on Friday the US non-farm payrolls. With all that ahead of the market, investors seemed to be positioning themselves appropriately.

- The ECB meeting remains the biggest event. The steady decline in peripheral Eurozone bond yields suggests that there is still some hope that the ECB will stop sterilizing the bond purchases that it made through the Securities Markets Program (SMP). Irish 10-year yields are now only 25 bps or so above US Treasuries! (about 145 bps over Bunds, vs over 1250 bps at the height of the crisis). In that context, the market will be watching this morning’s announcement of the March CPI for the Eurozone closely. The market is expecting it to slow to +0.6% from +0.7% in February. Friday’s surprise plunge in the Spanish CPI into deflation took EUR/USD down to 1.3705, a level last seen the day before the last ECB meeting. But the fact that German inflation wasn’t any lower than forecast caused some disappointment after the surprising Spanish data and a big drop in inflation in the German region of Saxony. I would think we will need to see Eurozone inflation coming in below estimates today to get another challenge of that level.

Sub-102 USDJPY buy looks pretty good as logic says upside is at risk after month/quarter/fiscal yearend passes and repatriation pressures ease. Focus then shifts to impact of April 1 hike in the consumption tax and speculation of further BoJ ease depending on how much the economy is impacted by it. On the upside, would need to get through and hold 102.50 to encourage a move higher.

March 2014 flash HICP (CPI)

From the Lloyds Bank Daily Economic Outlook posted on GVI Forex earlier

This week begins with a number of interesting data releases, but we will also watch for comments from key individuals across the course of the day. The Euro area publishes its preliminary March inflation estimate. Base effects suggest that the annual rate will soften again in March and we forecast a below consensus 0.5%. While this may fan immediate fears about Euro area deflation, we suspect that the rate will rebound again as soon as next month. The ECB remains sanguine in its assessment of deflation risks, projecting a rise back towards target over the coming years. Accordingly, we do not look for a policy reaction later this week in the Governing Council meeting.

Although USD rebound after a brief break of Feb's
1.2582 low to a 3-month trough at 1.2568 signals
temp. low is made, reckon 1.2625/35 would cap upside.

Sell on further recovery for 1.2655 but 1.2643
would hold. Only above 1.2660/61 may risk 1.2690/95.
