U.S. warns China over currency depreciation

I was just reading whining piece on the same topic in wsj: U.S. Treasury Looking Closely at Weaker Chinese Yuan
Says it Would be Concerned if China Retreats From Easing Control of the Yuan

-
Apparently the US Tr. dept is concerned about the global economic fallout of the currency’s decline. The Reuters piece is a bit more crude: "The United States warned Beijing"... but is actually short on details of the "warning" s else what.

Putin is a nut job .. one of those people who tell you something today and tomorrow have forgotten all about it and swear blind he didn't say it.

so until Russians stop taking over buildings asking for Russia to protect them - my peace can be disturbed quite quickly if I recommend to buy or hold myself a $yen long.

but at this pace of movement it's harder to see enough price action to generate a low.... my main worry here is Ukraine - you just never know what Putin will do.

seems people are confident the Fed is not going to accelerate anything - but now these forecasts for growth being above average coming back to earth .. so stocks weaker but not horrific performance.

nh investopedia says that "a downturn of 20% or more in multiple broad market indexes, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) or Standard & Poor's 500 Index (S&P 500), over at least a two-month period" is an entry into a bear market.

But some media types will qualify a 20% drop off the high regardless over what time period as bear market; always some ahead of their time.

It feels like a day where the best trade may be no trade.

Forex market is calm (and quiet here as well) compared to stocks, which continue to fall.

Gold is not benefiting.

Bonds firmer but cautious.

Even USDJPY seems cautious with a correlation more in direction than magnitude as it is only down modestly in a tight range and seems to have some support around 103.

It is hard to draw conclusions other than stocks, led by the NDX, getting an overdue correction.

Re S&P, I have seen 1840 mentioned several times (not just today) as a pivotal level.

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) -- Pro-Russian separatists who seized a provincial administration building in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk on Monday proclaimed the region an independent republic in a move echoing the run-up to Russia's annexation of Crimea.

The Interfax news agency said the activists demanded that a referendum be held no later than May 11 on the breaking away of the Donetsk region, which borders Russia.

In footage uploaded to the Internet, an unidentified pro-Russia activist in the provincial government headquarters in Donetsk asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to send peacekeeping troops to the region.

"Without your support, without the support of Russia, it will be hard for us to resist the Kiev junta on our own," he said, referring to the interim authorities that took power after the overthrow of Moscow-backed President Viktor Yanukovych in February.

Its looking to me as though the forex market is lacking inspiration at this hour, so we should revert to the equity correlation trades until a new theme emerges.

At the moment the S&P futures is diverging from USDJPY (S&P weaker). It could be difficult for the markets (algos?) to work out what to do with a period of equity weakness when the JPY is still vulnerable. This is the problem with the correlation trade when it does not make a lot of sense fundamentally. There is no logical reason for USDJPY to rise when U.S. stocks are higher, but that correlation is one of the strongest we've ever seen.

There is no point in overthinking this. The markets like a simple "risk on" or "risk off" decision. That does not require a lot of deep thinking. Keep an eye on the U.S. NASDAQ as the lead relationship where a mini "Tech Bubble" is being deflated.

(Reuters) - Protests in eastern Ukraine in which pro-Russian activists seized public buildings in three cities are part of a plan to destabilize Ukraine and bring in Russian troops, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said on Monday.

Saying Russian troops were within a 30 km (19 mile) zone from the Ukrainian border, Yatseniuk told a government meeting: "An anti-Ukrainian plan is being put into operation ... under which foreign troops will cross the border and seize the territory of the country.

"We will not allow this," he said.

Dollar falls broadly on long liquidation after U.S. jobs data missed forecast

The greenback fell against the majority of its peers on Friday as the release of weaker-than-expected U.S. non-farm payrolls boosted speculation that the Federal Reserve would remain accommodative in its monetary policy.

U.S. NFP came in at 192,000, lower than forecast of 200,000 and a revised previous month's figure of 197,000. Unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6.7%.

Versus the Japanese yen, although the greenback traded sideways in Asia and Europe, price briefly rose to an intra-day high at 104.13 immediately after the release of U.S. NFP. However, dollar swiftly fell to 103.56 as traders interpreted the data as not good enough and later dropped to session low at 103.20 in New York afternoon.

The single currency met renewed selling interest at 1.3724 at Asian open and resumed its descent from Thursday to 1.3796 at European open. Price pared its losses and rose briefly to session high at 1.3732 at New York open after the release of U.S. jobs report, however, euro dropped sharply to an intra-day low at 1.3672 in New York morning before recovering.

The British pound spent a lackluster day on Friday and traded sideways in Asia and Europe. Despite edging lower to session low at 1.6554 ahead of U.S. jobs data, price rose to an intra-day high at 1.6606 in New York morning on dollar's weakness. Later, cable retreated to 1.6568 before recovering again in New York afternoon.

In other news, Fed's Fisher said 'at current rate of taper QE3 will terminate in October; forward guidance a complicated monetary tool; calendar-based commitment can be unsound; calendar-based commitments can lead to markekt instability by encouraging overshoot, as some markets appear to be at present; economic models largely guesswork, notes "rabid" focus on FOMC projection; clear to me U.S. has liquidity pool sufficiently deep and wide to finance job-creating capital expansion.'

On the data front, U.K. March Halifax house prices came in at -1.1% m/m n 8.7% 3m/y, vs the forecast of 0.6% n 9.4% respectively.

Data to be released next week :

I have "saved", up to the Great ---WTF--- of 2008 --- $500,000, in the next 5 years...giving 2009 as a pass... I should have received at a min conservative historic Rate ---ChristmasClub/Passbook Savings, a rate of 5%. I shud have a plus $125,000 in my acct. How much could I buy wid dat.

So don't see that...more like $150....

Are These monetary advisors really that stupid...or just well paid OFF.

Fixed Income Snapshot

Somebody will eventually realize that interest rates are TOO LOW (this is why Japan has never recovered) -- consider that low rates make capital investment cheaper than labor so how does that help employment? // deflation is the price of civilization -- low interest rates = low velocity = stagnation not deflation

Yellen and the labor market

PAR - absolutely - the labor stats show the full employment levels for over 24 yr olds - but too much emphasis on "college" and not enough on education // we spend too much resource on heads rather than hands

Forex Forum

The Global-View Forex Forum is the hub for currency trading on the web. Founded in 1996, it was the original forex forum and is still the place where forex traders around the globe come 24/7 looking for currency trading ideas, breaking forex news, fx trading rumors, fx flows and more. This is where you can find a full suite of forex trading tools, including a complete fx database, forex chart points, live currency rates, and live fx charts. In addition, there is a forex brokers directory where you can compare forex brokers. There is also a forex brokers hotline where you can ask for help choosing a forex broker that meets your individual fx trading needs. Interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading.

Forex News

The forex forum is where traders come to discuss the forex market. It is one of the few places where forex traders of all levels of experience, from novice to professionals, interact on the same venue to discuss forex trading. There is also the GVI Forex, which is a private subscription service where professional and experienced currency traders meet in a private forex forum. it is like a virtual forex trading room. This is open to forex traders of all levels of experience to view but only experienced currency tradingprofessionals can post.

Currency Trading

Currency trading charts are updated daily using the forex trading ranges posted in the Global-View forex database. You will also find technical indicators on the fx trading charts, e.g. moving averages for currencies such as the EURUSD. This is another forex trading tool provided by Global-View.com.

Forex Brokers

The forex database can be used to access high, low, close daily forex ranges for key currency pairs, such as the EURUSD, USDJPY, USDCHF, GBPUSD, USDCAD, AUD, NZD and major crosses, including EURJPY, EURGBP, EURCHF, GBPJPY, GBPCHF and CHFJPY. Data for these currency trading pairs dating back to January 1, 1999 can be downloaded to an Excel spreadsheet.

Forex Trading

Forex chart points are in a currency trading table that includes; latest fx tradinghigh-low-close range, Bollinger Bands, Fibonacci retracement levels, daily forex pivot points support and resistance levels, average daily forex range, MACD for the different currency trading pairs. You can look on the forex forum for updates when one of the fx trading tools is updated.

FX Trading

Global-View also offers a full fx trading chart gallery that includes fx pairs, such as the EURUSD, commodities, stocks and bonds. In a fx trading world where markets are integrated, the chart gallery is a valuable trading tool. Look for updates on the Forex Forum when the chart gallery is updated.
