Well, when folks start to look for market witches everybody gets a ride on the ducking stool -- so far currencies have been relatively calm and commodities are still not in recession panic -- US interest rates are still low (some folks see weaker economy looming) and Fed says no tightening (except, of course, "it's only a trillion dollars" taper) -- so stox are leading this one - currencies are probably next (EM first - Turkey downgrade today but social unrest, Venezuela, Brazil and Argentina) Putin lurks but until the IMF says no to Ukraine or vice versa the EUR is probably safe, then commodities and finally Fixed Income blows up (PPI today might have been a first shot in the idiotic War on Deflation) see Greece bond auction, French, Italian yields // meanwhile by June the Taper will have reached critical mass

so next week a double bottom at SPX 1710 (buy) or a fake out low 1760 with a failed rally into one of the above Ducking Stool incidents // don't buy until Google search turns up more reference to Bears than Corrections

Late in European trade, prices in fixed income markets are now mostly higher as U.S. shares have turned lower to end the week. Some equity analysts said they were worried about
heading into a week end after a heavy Thursday sell-off. They also did not like the prospect for Monday if Friday is an especially weak session.

The economic calendar for next week is busy and front-weighted ahead of the Easter break. The peripheral European bond prices are mostly lower. The U.S. 10-yr was last 2.63%, 0bp.

The Preliminary April University of Michigan Sentiment Survey is Due. Equities will be the Focus

In the afternoon, we expect US March PPI data to show a rise of 0.2% on the month, slightly above consensus, which largely reflects a pick up in energy prices. Ex food & energy we expect a modest monthly pick up in PPI inflation from the previous month, but expect annual rate to remain unchanged at 1.1%. Later in the day, we expect the Michigan consumer sentiment survey to rise to 82.0 from 80.0 in February. This is slightly above consensus, as we expect a rebound after its February fall, more in line with the Conference Board survey.

U.S. dollar continues to weaken broadly on Thursday after Wednesday's dovish FOMC minutes

U.S. dollar dropped to three-week lows of 101.33 and 0.8749 against the Japanese yen and the Swiss franc respectively on Thursday after Wednesday's release of dovish minutes of the Federal Reserve's March meeting.

Despite staging a brief bounce to 102.14 in Asian morning on Thursday on short-covering, U.S. dollar weakened again in European session and fell briefly below Wednesday's low of 101.55 to 101.45 before trimming losses after the release of better-than-expected U.S. weekly jobless claims which fell to a seven-year low of 300,000, lower than the consensus forecast of 320,000. However, renewed selling interest quickly emerged at 101.97 due to renewed selloff in global stock markets. Dow Jones index dropped by more 200 points. U.S. dollar later dropped to a session low of 101.33.

Despite extending Wednesday's rally to 1.3871 in Asian morning on Thursday, following the release of dovish FOMC minutes, profit-taking below previous res at 1.3877 pressured price to 1.3836 in European morning before rebounding. The single currency later rose to an intra-day high of 1.3900 in New York due to renewed selling in U.S. stock markets.

The British pound extended Wednesday's rally to an intra-day high of 1.6821 in Asian morning on Thursday, however, profit-taking offers below Feb's 4-year peak of 1.6823 knocked price lower to 1.6754 b4 rebounding in New York in tandem with euro after the release of less-than-expected U.S. jobless claims. Bank of England kept its benchmark rate and QE total unchanged at 0.50% n 375 billion sterling respectively.

Bundesbank chief Jens Weidmann reiterated on Thursday that if there is a prolonged period of low inflation, the ECB will consider unconventional instruments. Last week, ECB chief Mario Draghi flagged the chances of quantitative easing.

In other news, IMF said 'unwinding large central bank balance sheets will be complex, could risk large spillovers via market n exchange rate volatility; calls for more cooperation between central banks and financial regulators; major emerging markets see room for more cooperation on spillovers from monetary policy; advanced economies shud calibrate pace of austerity to support recovery; reform fatigue could push global economy into prolonged slump.'

Friday will see the release of Japan domestic CGPI, China PPI, CPI , Germany CPI, HICP, France current account, U.S. PPI and U.S. University of Michigan consumer confidence.

Reply
if your bullish $yen then it maybe better to leave a stop entry at 5/6 rather than go long at these prices.

it hasn't paid to buy 85-00 nor to sell 30-40

so people are going to want to see something change before they start chasing it.

its been bot week this last few days - but right now mine doesn't have a position yet.

I sold cadyen myself - china exports down 6.6 % - ntg from BOJ as yet .. stox weak .. who knows with crimea over the weekend ... they are going to have to prove to me that $yen has enough momentum to get to 102.58 // and I don't see it as yet.

101.86 fib rejected once. if hourly trend is to continue, then next move is lower towards yesterdays low and then 20. a retest of fib in an hour or so would be something new and a break will probably take us to 102.05 quite quickly.

BUY AUDUSD!

Hi there, good afternoon. Aussie is good to buy on dips like on this support (S1). It may also visit 9340's (seeing a couple of support lines there). Whichever, it's on bid while this uptrend persists.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew told his Russian counterpart on Thursday that Russia could face tougher economic sanctions because of its actions in Ukraine.

The U.S. Treasury said that Lew warned Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov that the United States is prepared to impose "additional significant sanctions" if Russia escalates the Ukraine situation. Treasury said in a statement that Lew described Russia's annexation of Crimea as "illegal and illegitimate."

Lew's discussions with Siluanov came in advance of meetings Thursday of finance officials from the Group of Seven major industrial countries and the Group of 20 nations, which includes the G-7 countries and emerging economies such as China, Brazil and India.

On Monday, security researchers found an issue so scary they called it “Heartbleed.” It’s a flaw in an encryption tool used by about two-thirds of Internet servers that could be exploited to leak your login names and passwords.

You know how you’ve been meaning to update your passwords? Today’s really the day to do it.
