Tuesday sees revisions to U.K. GDP. Usually the revisions are not major. UK data recently has been fairly consistently positive and supportive of the GDP.

U.S.: The Case Shiller house price index allegedly is more accurate than other indices, but the data are stale so who cares?

The Conference Board Consumer Sentiment Survey is a well-established survey that is closely followed by many economists. It has a clear shorter-tern time horizon than the University of Michigan Survey. It is seen coming in at 83.0 vs. 82.2 in March.

I have been having my doubts recently about the value of these various sentiment surveys as predictors of the economy. Nevertheless a stronger reading should be USD supportive while a weak reading could hurt.

Notice our chart runs the University of Michigan Survey against the CB Survey even though the questions have different time-frames. Personally, I think the survey participants are unable to differentiate their time frames, so the results are comparable.

API energy data often give us a signal on EIA data on Wednesday. That's all.

Monetary Units
None. In fact there are three freely convertible currencies in the universe, but the Altarian Dollar has recently collapsed, the Flanian Pobble Bead is only exchangeable for other Flanian Pobble Beads, and the Triganic PU doesn't really count as money. Its exchange rate of six Ningies to one PU is simple, but since a Ningy is a triangular rubber coin 6800 miles long each side no one has ever collected enough to own one PU. Ningies are not negotiable currency because the galactic banks refuse to deal in piddling small change. From this basic premise it's very simple to prove that the galactic banks are also the product of a deranged imagination.

Fannie and Freddie also allow 5 percent down, provided you can pay mortgage insurance premiums.
Down payments on VA loans can go to zero if your veteran status allows you to qualify.
Department of Agriculture loans — which are designed for home buyers who live in small towns — also allow for down payments of zero.

Mortgages are easier to obtain than many prospective home buyers might expect

Its looking like a mild "risk-on" session today as we illustrated in our "Risk-on/Risk-off" table below". As usual, I am keying off equity prices because these days they set the tone for fixed income (bond) markets. There was a time when it worked the other way around. The two then set the tone for forex trading. It looks like the S&P (e-mini) futures are trying to give USDJPY a lift at this hour.

EURUSD continues to display remarkable resilience. It continues to look like it wants to break through topside resistance. We continue to suspect that there is the "invisible hand" of covert intervention to cap the topside of EURUSD.

EUR/USD - 1.3872... German gov't spokesman says 'Russia shud use its influence on separatists in Ukraine to ensure OSCE observers are released.'

The single currency found renewed buying at 1.3818 at European open n jumped to 1.3876 in early European morning in tandem with cable after tripping stops at 1.3850/55. Bids are now raised to 1.3855/60 n more below at 1.3840/50 with stops building up below there.

Mkt focus is now on the release of EU inflation figures later this week, as that wud give some indication on the possibility of ECB deploying unconventional measures to manage the Eurozone.

ECB's Constancio says 'have no target in mind for April inflation data; it is not just one or two numbers that matter but medium-term outlook; we are not entirely out of the danger zone, it is too soon to declare the crisis over; Eurozone challenges include a low inflation period that threatens to aggravate debt overhand besetting some gov'ts; there are several policy instruments available, we will act if we see we need to.'

ECB's Noyer says 'euro strength is a powerful deflationary factor; ECB willing to use unconventional measures if needed; Hollande's plan to cut charges, spending unavoidable.'

Traders reported selling by st specs at Asian open on stop hunting as despite Fri's brief jump to session high of 1.6834 after stronger-than-expected U.K. retail sales, report of lumpy offers at 1.6835/40 spooked st buyers n the pound later ratcheted lower to 1.6795 in NY afternoon. The lack of follow-though selling below 1.6790 suggests intra-day selling is done as traders are aware of near term bids abv last week low at 1.6762.

Australian dollar
Reply
SYDNEY--The Australian dollar was little changed Monday with all eyes looking ahead to the outcome of the latest U.S. central bank meeting on Thursday local time, and U.S. employment data on Friday.

At 0600 GMT the Australian dollar was trading around US$0.9299 compared with US$0.9294 late Thursday, just ahead of a three-day weekend in Australia.

Economists don't expect U.S. policymakers to change their tapering program this week.

But will they alter their forward guidance? At the press conference following the last meeting, U.S. Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen muddied the water by suggesting the Fed could start raising interest rates "around six months" after tapering ends. She and other Fed officials have walked back from that timing statement.

U.S. employment growth in April is tipped to be strong.

Economists think April nonfarm payrolls rose by a solid 215,000 and the jobless rate slipped to 6.6% from 6.7% in March. Ms. Yellen's comments have suggested that future Fed policy moves will be linked to measures of slackness in the labor markets.

David Forrester, currency strategist at Macquarie Bank, based in Singapore, said there was little else on the minds of traders, with markets waiting to see if Ms. Yellen would change her rhetoric on the timing of interest rate increases.

So far in 2014, the consensus view that the start of Fed tapering would see the U.S. dollar rise has not played out as expected, Mr. Forrester said.

"The failed consensus trade is that the U.S. dollar is going to get better," he said.

Still, he added the Fed will need to telegraph its intention to start raising its Fed funds rate at least six months ahead of time to manage market expectations.

Mr. Forrester said that moment should result in a strongly supported U.S. dollar, and some selling of the Australian dollar will begin.

Intra-Day Market Moving News and Views USD/JPY

USD/JPY - 102.10.. source from JiJi news - Japan's FinMin Taro Aso says on Mon yen has weakened due to monetary, fiscal stimulus, will continue with this direction. He says he would stick to this policy stance.

Several minutes earlier, Bloomberg reported comments from Aso who said likely can't avoid corporate tax cut to keep competitiveness; need a broad discussion of corporate tax including the tax base; wants the tax panel to carefully consider corporate tax.

Japan's Nikkei stock average opened down 0.9% due to increased tensions in Ukraine as the leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission (G7) joined in over the weekend expressing the deep concern at the continued efforts by separatists backed by Russia to destabilize eastern Ukraine and our commitment to taking further steps to ensure a peaceful and stable environment for the May 25 presidential election.

On the data front, Japan's retail sales rose by 6.3% n 16.1% in March, their fastest pace in 17 years ahead of a sales tax hike, versus economists' forecast of 6.0% n 13.8% respectively. However, the Japanese yen showed little reaction to the data as investors are awaiting the release of new economic projections by the Bank of Japan, following its meeting on Wednesday.

Market players expected the BOJ is likely keep its inflation forecast for fiscal 2015 roughly unchanged from the current 1.9% and is also set to estimate fiscal 2016 inflation close to 2%.

Increasing tension in the Far east left by Obama visiting trail in the Far East.

Now visit the Philippines to increase the US military expansion since vacating their bases.

Under the VFA(vaginas for arms) agreement, by which the USA will supply the impoverished Philippine army with dilapidated surplus hardware, in return for a promise to let navy personnel marry 2000 bar-girls yearly and bring them to the US.

Happy days are back in town, since the Vietnam war.

Aussie Banks At Risk of Earnings Season Fall - UBS -- Market Talk
Reply
Australian banks are at risk of a selloff through next month's earnings season, with the sector now trading near record high PE ratios, according to UBS analyst Jonathon Mott. "While this reporting season should be strong, potential upgrades are likely to come from cyclical sources such as even lower bad debts and higher trading income," he says. "Given this, we would not be surprised to see the banks once again sell off through reporting season." Mott estimates the banking sector is trading on 14.6 times expected FY14 EPS and 14.2 times expected FY15 EPS

but those were simpler times.

Probably they followed O. long B4 being the president, phone calls... etc. Or maybe they caught him on cam pants down with one of his CIA planted secretaries.

the real fun will probably start when markets dislocate like they did with Lehman... but at a "higher level" level still such as that of foreigners stopping buying each others' paper, say like if they stop adding (let alone dump) Lew's paper. And maybe I ll see Gold at multi-thousands price point in my lifetime yet.

The only way the US administration can keep it's aggressive push on Russia, is through economic sanctions, and/or military buildup in eastern Europe. The way it looks they are not going give up.

I suspect Obama is a captive under extortion of the CIA, as these kind of actions do not fit his views.

The Ukrainian government on the other side can't even reach the 11000 strong men quota to attack the insurgents, and even ask the public to donate soap packs and underwear for their ragtag army.

Sanctions and counter-sanctions may weigh no less than a military offensive, and it can also be explicitly approximated in economic impact on both sides.
Today the second salvo of eco-sanctions should be taken notice of.
