A moderately upbeat session overnight largely ignored data disappointments. Eurozone economic sentiment (EC survey) missed, as did US consumer confidence (Conference Board). US equities were inspired by positive earnings surprises from Merck and Sprint.

JAPAN BOJ decision. we don't expect much and unlikely to be a major market-moving event.

GERMANY: Retail Sales and Unemployment. Both are potentially market moving releases. Germany is seen as the engine of EZ growth and the data will be judged it that light.

EUROZONE; flash April HICP (CPI) could be very influential on the ECB policy decision in just over a week's time. Key will be if low inflation persists. This would intensify the pressure on the ECB to ease monetary policy further.

UNITED STATES: ADP Private Payrolls are seen gaining 206K in April. Markets are hoping for a strong Spring U.S. bounce back in the economy. U.S. GDP and the Chicago PMI will be examined for positive economic signs.

We are not expecting much from the Fed policy decision. A $10 bln tapering to $45bn is baked into street expectations. Otherwise, look at the policy statement for other news. Interest rates are on hold for the rest of the year at a minimum.

We expect no surprises from the FOMC policy announcement on Wednesday. Another $10 bln cut in the monthly Asset Purchase Program to $45bln is assured. There is no press conference afterwards, so we will have only the official statement as an explanation of the policy decision. Chair Yellen will speak publicly on Thursday and may or may not comment of Fed policy..

Just remember, when it comes to investing, "it's not the economy, stupid! It's Tuesday.. oh and tomorrow is FOMC."

It's Tuesday and the Dow is up 0.6% - almost 50% more than a normnal Tuesday

And you always buy before FOMC...

The Dow is now practically unchanged year-to-date... but ex-Tuesdays is down over 7%

WASHINGTON — U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chair Mary Jo White on Tuesday responded directly to allegations in Michael Lewis' new book about high-frequency trading markets.

"The markets are not rigged," she told a U.S. House of Representatives panel. "The U.S. markets are the strongest and most reliable in the world."

White on Tuesday tried to soothe some concerns about whether firms are wrongfully trading ahead of others.

She said it "is not unlawful insider-trading."

There has been some confusion between the idea of having an early sneak-peak at data, versus cases where firms are able to react more quickly to publicly available data.

I posted this 2 1/2 hours ago on GVI Forex and you can see how little bounce EURUSD has had since its initial fall it is still within what is now the current 1.3780-1.3880 range.

This market must have gotten stuffed long EUR ahead of Wed's EZ HICP as it has it has shown little bounce since the post-data drop.

Now we roll the dice on EZ HICP, where market will be wary of a weaker inflation # so surprise would be if it comes in hotter. An as per consensus result might be more of a relief to those betting on ECB policy move on May 8.

Late in European trade, its very clear we remain in a risk-on market with many of the heat cells flashing green. Note the red cell for Japan where equity markets were closed on Tuesday for a holiday. U.S. equity markets have been maintaining a positive tone. We are keeping a close eye on the NASDAQ again. The prices for peripheral bond markets are lower. European equities are closing higher. Far East equity markets ended mostly up earlier. The U.S. 10-yr was last 2.70%, 0 bp.

Note: the color scheme of interest rates has been changed to reflect yields, not bond prices. This aligns all the colors in the chart to reflect risk-on (green) and risk-off (red).

USD is not getting the flows. Main driver has been flows out of EUR but EURUSD remains above 1.38.

So it has been all about the cross offsets (e.g. GBP has been a beneficiary)

By the way I gave a heads up on the German HICP but like most, was not expecting a surprise. A bit disappointing as my plan was to sell into a pop on EZ HICP tomorrow.

The release of the flash German HICP (CPI) today shows how sensitive the forex and global markets are to anything that might change expectations. In this regard, German flash April HICP (CPI) came in 0.1% less than expected at -0.2% vs -0.1% month/month expected and +1.3% vs. +1.4% year/year expected. While the market takes the headline news data at face value, it is rounded off data and a central bank (e.g. ECB) has more details. Let me explain.

BUZZ-Excess liquidity cuts chances of ECB easing in May - RTRS
Reuters 29-Apr-2014 15:42
ECB operations will take excess liquidity back above EUR 100 bln on Weds. The liquidity operations conducted Tues will settle Weds which along with the 3-yr LTRO repayment will mean a net increase in excess liquidity of EUR 104 bln. This means Monday's EUR 86 bln excess liquidity will jump to EUR 190 bln Weds. On the surface this reduces the chance of ECB easing in May, but we still think the bank will respond to the need to pre-emptively deal with volatility at the short-end of money markets.

Japan is the country which first discovered:
- a massive property bubble
- excessive private sector borrowing
- massive government debt (following the subsequent bail out)
- Japan invented QE
Despite very low interest rates today it is almost impossible for consumers and small businesses to access credit from banks. Credit is only really available to the government and large corporates - via the bond market at eye poppingly low rates. Wages have been progressively slashed - for decades. Production has been shifted offshore. The economy remains in the tank though the corporate sector is doing fine. And now they want to repeal the law that made it illegal to lend at an interest rate of more than 20%pa. Previously - for small business and personal loans - 29% was the going rate and there is now a proposal to bring that rate back. Japan has become a country based on subservience to corporate conglomerates: slavery in other words.

America take a good look: this is your future.

Japan had two runs up in the stock market. The first hit 38.000 before the crash and then there was another run up in the early 1990s. Today the Nikkei is just over 14.000. The comparison with 1929 is irrelevant. Stock market traders should take a look at the Nikkei.

The first estimate of Q1 GDP will be today’s domestic highlight, especially given last week’s MPC minutes which suggested a widening range of Committee views on the policy outlook. Most of the high-frequency indicators have pointed to a pickup in growth from the 0.7% q/q recorded in Q4 and our UK team line up with the market consensus in expecting a 0.9% print. However, with recent surveys pointing to a softening in service sector output growth during February, the risks are tilted to the downside.

Intra-Day Market Moving News and Views GBP/USD

GBP/USD - 1.6818... BoE Governor Mark Carney says 'recovery broadening; BoE officials prudently optimistic on outlook; it's important we see longer term growth; consistent growth requires substantial wage rises; early signs are that recovery is sustainable; BoE interest rate rises will be gradual, limited.'

29 Apr 2014 02:49GMT
GBP/USD - 1.6814.. Cable moves narrowly in subdued Asian trading as Asian traders are on the sideline after seeing the pound pulling back rather sharply fm a fresh 4-1/2 year peak of 1.6858 to 1.6801 in NY session Mon. As mentioned in y'day's update, short-term specs bot sterling broadly at European open on news of a mega M&A deal, however, as many had pointed out earlier, market is long on cable, longs quickly took profit when no strg follow-through buying materialised n the release of upbeat U.S. pending sales triggered further long liquidation in NY.

Expect cable to trade abv 1.6801 until European open n market may well test the upside ahead of the release of the blockbuster advanced U.K. Q1 GDP, street forecast is calling for an annual growth of 3.2% vs prev. reading of 2.7%. Even if the data comes in as per expectation, as cable is now a crowded trade, more profit-taking offers shud limit the pound's upside today n downside risk seems to weigh on cable more. For now, bids are noted at 1.6805/00 n more below with fairly large stops touted below 1.6760. On the upside, initial offers are reported at 1.6840/50 n more abv with a mixture of stops n offers at 1.6860/65.
