The Repo Man Fails to Deliver
Reply
But why do I care about some archaic money-market malarkey? Simple, Without collateral to fund repo, there is no repo; without repo, there is no leveraged positioning in financial markets; without leverage and the constant hypothecation there is nothing to maintain the stock market's exuberance (as we are already seeing in JPY and bonds)
The spike in "fails to deliver" highlights a major growing problem in the repo markets that provide that leverage... and thus the glue that holds stock markets together.
Wondering why JPY and bond yields have diverged so notably from stocks in recent days... repo effects (it's just a matter of time before it hits stocks)...

There was a flight to safe-havens during the London morning, mostly unwound during the NY session. The spark appeared to be news a Portuguese banking group defaulted on debt. Portugal's stockmarket (PSI) closed down 3.7%, the Eurostoxx 50 closed 1.6% lower, and the S&P500 is currently down 0.4%. Global investors bought US and German government bonds, and pushed the US dollar higher.

frustrated by the Federal Reserve’s expansive economic stimulus campaign, and its growing role as a financial regulator, are renewing their efforts to constrain the central bank.
The Fed would be required to set monetary policy based on a published formula under legislation introduced this week by leading Republicans on the Financial Services Committee. Other bills would eliminate the Fed’s responsibility to maximize employment, or eliminate the Fed entirely.
Ms. Yellen is likely to face questions on the subject when she appears before House and Senate committees Tuesday and Wednesday for semiannual testimony.

Where is Mary Jo? SEC?
Yesterday we wrote about the strange case of CYNK Technology.
The company's stock gained nearly 25,000% in 16 trading days, giving it a market cap of over $5 billion. But, as we noted, it's not clear if the company really exists, as financial statements indicate that it has no revenue, assets, or full-time employees.
Cynk Technology Corp., a development stage company, focuses on operating a social network. Its social network is based on showing the types of people the user is connected with and associated. The company intends to serve seekers, who want to meet people; mavens, who know a lot of people; and targets, who are people that other people want to meet. The company was formerly known as Introbuzz, Inc. and changed its name to Cynk Technology Corp. in July 2013. Cynk Technology Corp. was founded in 2008 and is based in Belize City, Belize.

Risk On/Off Heat Map
Markets moved to a risk-off posture on Thursday after problems surfaced
in a major Portuguese bank. The issues triggered strong intra-Eurozone
flows and gave the USD a flight-to-safety bid. The EURUSD continues has
retested the 1.3600 line.
- Yields in prime Eurozone fixed income
markets are broadly lower. Yields on the European
periphery are higher, especially in Portugal. The German 10-yr bund is
1.21%, -2bp.
- The U.K.10-yr gilt yield is
2.63% -4bp. Odds still favor a +25bp BOE short-term rate hike by
yearend.
- U.S.10-yr yield is 2.52%, -6bp.
- Equities closed mixed in the
Far East. Bourses in Europe are ending lower. U.S. shares are weaker.
The heat map color scheme
of interest rates reflects yields. This aligns all the colors in the
chart to reflect risk-on (green) and risk-off(red).

JP - these questions addressed to me? I like EUR/AUD up. Aussie is defying gravity. Westpac is being urged to close 200 branches, iron ore is in trouble, mines are operating at losses, housing market seems to have peaked, the budget was contractionary and unpopular and impacting consumer confidence and spending.... Goldman is calling a rate cut in the future (all other analysts are calling for no change for ever and ever). The China trade boom is over. I could go on. The trouble with the Aussie is that volatility and ranges are a killer. You have to have deep pockets.
Cable? I don't think I would sell that to be honest. We probably all have to hold our horses. Either that or have the tightest possible stops or very deep pockets. Why would you sell cable? Because it's at a high? I'm not sure that is enough of a good reason.

“That is a break from where most of the committee seems to be, which is a very slow convergence of inflation to target,” he said

MADRID — Espírito Santo Financial Group SA, the controlling shareholder of Portuguese lender Banco Espírito Santo SA, Thursday said it has suspended trading in its own shares and bonds.
In a news release, Espírito Santo Financial Group said the suspension was due to “ongoing material difficulties at its largest shareholder Espírito Santo International S.A.” It didn’t elaborate further.
Shares of Banco Espírito Santo PT:BES -17.24% , which haven’t been suspended, tumbled in early trade in Lisbon, and the local blue-chip index fell over 3%.
The move comes after the Portuguese stock-market imposed a temporary ban on short selling to stem panic selling of shares in both ESFG and BES. Short selling is the practise of selling shares not already owned by investors before repurchasing them

JP - I don't care a dam.n about inflation / deflation / the definition of unemployment and all those 'statistics' which are supposed to tell us about the economy. Most of those statistics are manipulated and therefore useless in any case. What I care about is the direction of international capital flows. That's it. And what I watch is USD/JPY. The U.S. has been living off international capital flows from Asia for decades. That has now changed. And the impact on U.S. economic activity will not be good. All those calls for USD/JPY at 110 are a joke in my opinion. What happens when we see real capital repatriation will be mind boggling for most people. And the vulnerable economies are those with large foreign debts and large current account deficits. And that is the definition, by and large, of all the Anglo Saxon economies. World reset.

Banco Espirito Sancto (BES) worries certainly a reason why Portuguese yields are higher and also a weight om the prices for other peripheral bonds this week. They are giving prime government bonds a bid.
This raises doubts about the wisdom of recent moves out of the prime credits in the EZ to the higher yielders? They had higher yields for a reason!
BES fueling the risk-off trade today. See story below.
Frankly I don't see how this can be EUR positive? Any thoughts?

have gone back to a risk-off posture in the wake of the Fed Minutes
released yesterday. some had been expecting a more hawkish
posture after a stronger June jobs report, even though the data came
out after the FOMC. EURUSD continues to try to distance
itself from 1.3600.
- Yields in prime Eurozone fixed income
markets are mostly lower. Yields on the European
periphery are up again. The German 10-yr bund is 1.20%, -3bp.
- The U.K.10-yr gilt yield is
2.62% -5bp. Odds still favor a +25bp BOE short-term rate hike by
yearend.
- U.S.10-yr yield is 2.53%, -5bp.
- Equities closed mixed in the
Far East. Bourses in Europe are lower. U.S. share futures are down.
The heat map color scheme
of interest rates reflects yields. This aligns all the colors in the
chart to reflect risk-on (green) and risk-off(red).

The family behind Portugal's largest listed bank by assets intends to ask creditors for an extension of the maturities on debts issued by its Luxembourg-registered holding company and a possible debt-for-equity swap, Portuguese media reported on Wednesday.
Espirito Santo International (ESI) has been under scrutiny since an audit found "material irregularities" at the Espirito Santo family's holding company and BES shares have slumped sharply on worries that the bank's capital base could be affected.
Analysts cited the potential risk for the Portuguese financial sector as a whole for the jump in bond yields, despite repeated government assertions that BES is isolated from the holding company's problems and there is no risk to public finances.

Bloomberg news reported earlier that Bank of Japan officials see buying exchange-traded funds based on the JPX-Nikkei Index 400 as a future option to boost the impact of unprecedented easing and encourage companies to deploy cash for investment, according to people familiar with the central bank's discussions.
Data to be released on Thursday:
New Zealand PMI, Japan domestic CGPI, machinery orders, consumer confidence, Australia employment, China exports, imports, trade balance, France CPI, industrial output, Italy industrial output, UK RICS housing survey, trade balance, BoE rate decision, Canada housing price index, U.S. jobless claims, wholesale sales and wholesale inventories.

(Reuters) - German lender Commerzbank AG is expected to pay between $600 million and $800 million to resolve investigations into its dealings with Iran and other countries under U.S. sanctions, sources familiar with the matter said.
The penalty, previously reported to be more than $500 million, includes a demand from New York's top banking regulator, Benjamin Lawsky, for more than $300 million from the bank, the sources said.

All in a hope that the figures will not disappoint(like the trade balance). If figures disappoint, the exit will be too narrow to accommodate all the rush.
